If you don’t think they’ll understand it’s a joke, you should also be aware that they’ll take the explanation of the joke as “backpedaling” and “covering your own ass”.
No really. When my partner tries to hand off a rat to me, they say ‘Will you take this rat?” And I say, “I will take this rat! in sickness and in health” etc.
Considering how some people I think I would much rather be in a relationship with their pet (even as friends) than them, I get where he is coming from.
Yeah. They seemed to think Danny’s main value as he headed to college was that he was going to marry Dorothy, who was obviously Going Places in a way that Danny never would.
This…was not healthy for him, or comfortable for Dorothy.
There’s the low bar set by Blaine, the low bar set by Toedad, the low bar set by the Beans… they seem to be somewhat clearing the low bars set by the Siegals and the Walkertons…
…. damn, this feels like it’s set 100 years ago. There are so many bars set in basements that it must be Prohibition.
Yeah, both of them have fairly generic sounds, but I honestly don’t think Coldplay is bad. It’s just very same-ish. Most of their songs aren’t super deep lyrically and their vocal dynamics as singers are fairly basic. They aren’t daring or unconventional. It’s something I’d listen to if someone had it on, but I wouldn’t play it obsessively like some other songs.
Coldplay to me, is like the black licorice of music.
Can’t speak for the music, but I love black licorice. Always have, since I was a kid. My favorite jelly beans were always the black licorice-flavored ones. I really don’t get why people don’t like it. Also, your statement makes me even more confused about how some people react to it, since “tastes kind of generic” is even further from what it tastes like to me than “tastes awful” is. It’s got such a strong, unusual flavor.
I like Coldplay as in… They have some certified bangers (if “The Scientist” can’t be applied to a ship then it’s not an OTP). But it’s true there’s like, two of those per album, max, and the rest of it sounds a lot like those two songs.
It’s a bit sad it’s such a meme to dislike them (not even hate them!) I’m not a fan either, but they get a spot in my Background Brit Playlists in the same way Oasis does (and some people would defend Oasis to death.)
In Australia Nickleback’s the one people joke-mock. Personally I wouldn’t know Coldplay from Nickleback anyway, but that;s just because brain does not retrieve info very well.

I’ve been suffering through my grandmother (80s) trying to set me up with her new roommate (20s).
I don’t think many people would enjoy having their grandparents play matchmaker behind their back.
Probably she did.
She tries to help people when she can and she travels a lot so it’s a cheap room.
Though considering her nature, I ALSO wouldn’t put it past her that it was in her head to give her more opportunities to push us together.
Danny, I don’t know if you are aware of this, but your parents suck too. Just not in such an obvious way as most of the parents in this comic.
Ignoring all that, don’t worry Sal he loves you more than any band, not just Coldplay. He knows you wouldn’t stand for being transferred, not that he would give you up either. He’s a good egg like 98% of the time.
Yea Sal, don’t worry,
Danny is never gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you
Unless she’s trying to sell said heart with lots of hidden fees and the website keeps crashing, I think she’s better than Ticketmaster.
(Actually I think Ticketmaster says they’re going to stop doing the hidden fee thing. So that makes them trustworthy, just like Salvation Army was when they said they’d stop fighting against LGBT+ rights.)
Danny’s parents are some of the low-key shitty ones, denigrating him constantly. I did not even know he had a brother, so I wonder what relationship he has with them.
Obviously, not saying Danny’s parents are the worst, they are nowhere near as fucked up as Naomi Segal, Blaine, etc, but they are kinda dickweeds in a way I have no patience for.
His brother’s been in the military – specifically Afghanistan, but he’s home now. We know his parents got updates on him but other than that, we know fuck all about Randy.
I hope he’s cool. We need more positive older role models in this comic. I can count the good ones on my hand. We need another Joyceline quality sibling.
once everyone graduates at least a small chunk of them will realize “oh i can move away and never talk to them again” other than being legally bound or so i’d think some would manage to make it far away
Yeah, I feel like I owe Danny an apology for thinking he was going to be slower to catch on than this. Then again, it doesn’t seem like Sal’s being particularly subtle about her feelings. (Which also shouldn’t be a surprise, because Sal.)
Unstoppable Force (Sal has been a *long* time favorite character of mine and seeing her happy makes me want to pledge to the DOA patreon so i can see more strips of her being happy) VS Unmovable Object ( I am so broke it’s not even funny). Woe is me etc etc etc anyways this strip owns and I’m glad the Danny/Sal relationship has been very cute so far.
My stepmom sort of did the opposite once. She didn’t like that my brother (her oldest child as I was the only child from my dad’s first marriage) was interested in a girl older than him (and she returned said interest) that we both worked with (I helped him get the job). My stepmom wanted to know more about the girl and asked me what I thought about her. I chose not to mention the fact that she was quite the smokeshow and focused on the positives of her personality.
My stepmom’s response? “If she is so interesting and likable, why don’t you ask her out?”
I passed on mentioning my more overreaching reason that I stopped asking anyone out (my life experience to that point convinced that the only form of birth control that was more effective than my physical appearance was my personality). Instead, I brought up the obvious reason to not ask her out (my brother was interested in her).
Mind you, she wasn’t interested in me actually finding a love connection. She was interested in protecting her baby boy.
In the final panel, Sal says, “I’m non-transferrable. I ain’t Coldplay tickets.”
If you were telling your sweetie to treat you as unique and special, what fungible or non-fungible (shareable or non-shareable, exchangeable or non-interchangeable) thing would you compare yourself to?
For example: “I’m non-transferrable. I’m like earning tenure.” Or, in the alternative, “I’m non-transferable. I’m not a Netflix password.”
Maybe I’ve just got Zelda on the mind, but the first thing I thought of was the Master Sword. No idea how to actually apply that do any of my own attributes, but I can’t think of anything else.
DRM? So there’s a cracked version of you available for free in an unofficial capacity that works better because it’s got the obstructive and poorly-optimised anti-piracy gunk taken out?
That’s a really creepy thing Danny’s saying at the end, there. What kind of freak looks at their kid’s dating partner and says “Oh, you should date our other kid instead”? That’s just asking for a beatdown and forceful separation between child and parent. I’m talkin’ legal name change, whatever law word means “you can’t put me on any bit of paperwork no matter how much you want to or you go to jail/pay me thousands of dollars per letter”, the works. It’s fucking disgusting to even think about.
There’s having a golden child, and then there’s “You are unsuitable for a romantic partner, and we don’t respect you enough to let you make that decision for yourself. Also, said partner is a thing, not a person, for us to give to whoever we’d like.”
It happens. I don’t think anyone’s about to argue that it’s gross and hurtful and ample justification for cutting said parents out of your life if you’re the unfavorite, but some parents really are so hung up on one of their kids that they can’t fathom why anyone else who comes into contact with the kid wouldn’t be equally obsessed, much less interested in the “failed” attempt(s).
I get the feeling this may be an exaggeration that is used to express Danny’s frustrations with his parents. I don’t think they would actually DO that, but it’s clearly coming from some very real feelings of unequal treatment.
Yeah, since it’s not a direct quote his parents have actually said on-panel, I’m not really taking it as one. Just the concept on its own is what I’m really creeped out by.
This has become far too much of an adorable relationship that i’m genuinely apprehensive of it falling apart at any moment. Willis has burned us one too many times.
man I know it’s “just danny” but you’d think that like his parents could be even slightly nicer about him being with someone.
dude may not be very cool and was an idiot ranging to asshole about dorothy going to yale and totally fucked up in a horrible way with ethan
but he genuinely tries to help people and does nice things like make sandwiches for bike rides. the world needs more of such people and treating their whole life as only having worth in the context of finding someone else is pretty fucking awful.
outside the context of racists, murderers, homophobes, and homophobic murderers that we’re working in here, these are some pretty awful parents. dude probably would’ve been less of an idiot about dorothy if his parents weren’t all “you best stick with her forever” all the time.
… Huh. This is slightly off topic, but I just had a weird brain wave
(Happened b/c of thinking of Ethan briefly).
So.
We know Asher called the cops on Sal right after they dropped her off, blah blah blah, to make their own ‘getaway’ easier.
…but.
I wonder if that was actually the case? Given that the clearly has several cops under their thumb, would they NEEDED to have done that?
Is it possible that Asher was *ordered* to do that to teach the Walkertons ‘A Lesson’ for something? That it was a setup, yeah, but that it wasn’t *just* to get away more easily for their own smash and grab?
I doubt it. A convenience store holdup seems too amateur to have been professionally coordinated. I think Asher was acting alone, without “the family”‘s involvement.
That makes it more dated later on, though. You’d read it and think “Oh yeah, that hilarious thing happened and one of the relatives went to a concert about it, six months beforehand.”

ahh nah, if it does attach on his back, it attaches upside-down from my expected arrangement, so
guess that chunk of vehicle mode hanging off his back already is the "cape"

Looks like the shield attaches via 5mm port to his arm, and there IS a 5mm port also on what becomes his back, so... maybe! If it doesn't get covered over in the transformation!

So Mirriam Webster has announced that 'FRIDGE' is an official word in their dictionary now, and sited me as the concept's creator in the definition.
Very cool, and weird at the same time. I got death threats over this, cool for it it to be recognized.
www.merriam-webster.com/slang/fridge
"Abolish ICE" and "defund the police" were the compromise positions. Trials and gallows need to be on the table from here. We can't accept princes and pretender-kings back into shuffle of potential leaders. We can't allow them to come back for the levers of power again later. They've hurt so many.
The time has come homies! Let's make this happen!!! 🦖

I can’t imagine my folks doing that with me
mostly bc my brother is “married” to his cat
Holy Catrimony?
This is the future liberals want! ;p
Want? No. But do we care (as long as the cat’s unharmed)? Also no.
I know it’s a joke. Just wanted to clarify for any conservatives who can’t get it. (humour isn’t really their ‘thing’)
If you don’t think they’ll understand it’s a joke, you should also be aware that they’ll take the explanation of the joke as “backpedaling” and “covering your own ass”.
The joke fits their narrative, therefore it must be the truth. Oh, look, confirmation that their narrative is true!
I am in ratrimony with my pet.
No really. When my partner tries to hand off a rat to me, they say ‘Will you take this rat?” And I say, “I will take this rat! in sickness and in health” etc.
Considering how some people I think I would much rather be in a relationship with their pet (even as friends) than them, I get where he is coming from.
look, cats are just so much easier to understand than humans
In my case, it’s more like…
You know what? Now that I’m thinking about it, it probably qualifies as a Common Law Marriage.
Danny’s parents are the ones who sent Dorothy the creepy marital scripture picture frame, right?
Yep.
eeeurp.
Yep. They were also kinda weird about Amber, but less so, probably since they had considerably less time with her.
Yeah. They seemed to think Danny’s main value as he headed to college was that he was going to marry Dorothy, who was obviously Going Places in a way that Danny never would.
This…was not healthy for him, or comfortable for Dorothy.
From what little I’ve seen or remember Danny’s parents barely clear a pretty low bar to begin with.
They clear several low bars, actually.
I don’t want to just type “lol” because that would seem insincere, but I do want you to know that I legitimately laughed aloud in real life.
If the comments here had an upvote function, I definitely would have upvoted Reltzik’s post.
Don’t forget the bar set by Carol.
Hahaha, nice
This is one of the most clever jokes I’ve seen in a while. Screenshotting it and possibly adding it to my personal vernacular.
Of course you’re not Sal. Somebody wants you.
Can I get an F in the comments for Coldplay? They used to rule the world.
Yeah. Seas would rise when they gave the word.
They tried their best but they didn’t succeed
Is this a US thing? Not liking Coldplay I mean. They’re still filling stadiums every year here in the south.
Is it like not liking Nickelback?
Yeah, both of them have fairly generic sounds, but I honestly don’t think Coldplay is bad. It’s just very same-ish. Most of their songs aren’t super deep lyrically and their vocal dynamics as singers are fairly basic. They aren’t daring or unconventional. It’s something I’d listen to if someone had it on, but I wouldn’t play it obsessively like some other songs.

And if you doooo,
A high bit in the middle-eight then yooou,
Have almost solved the riddle of just how,
To sound like Coldplay now.

Oh, they’re still fantastically popular here, too. We just make fun of them.
I like Coldplay as in… They have some certified bangers (if “The Scientist” can’t be applied to a ship then it’s not an OTP). But it’s true there’s like, two of those per album, max, and the rest of it sounds a lot like those two songs.

Some post-Beatles musical group has songs that are like certified sausages. Got it.
In Australia Nickleback’s the one people joke-mock. Personally I wouldn’t know Coldplay from Nickleback anyway, but that;s just because brain does not retrieve info very well.
Nickelback is the one with the guy who sandpapers his throat. Coldplay is the one with the guy who sounds like a plastic tube.
I legitimately like both bands but you’re right.
I had a biology professor set exam notes as Coldplay lyrics to encourage people to study. Now I can’t remember the real lyrics vs the biology ones.
You really should share these
Absolutely agree. I’ve been reading this strip for years and have never, not once, been tempted to comment, until now.

The timescale was alterable. The past had never been altered. Randy was home from war with Afghanistan. Randy had never been at war with Afghanistan.
I already dealt with 1984 tonight. Didn’t think I’d see it again already.
Pray he does not alter it further.
Or rather, why the hell not, I mean, it’s his webcomic xD
Danny has a brother?
He was mentioned back during Freshman Family Weekend. He, uh… seems to be the favorite of the two.
Randy. I wonder how he’s doing. Is he still in Afghanistan? I guess sliding timescale might mean he never went.
According to the alt text, he’s probably home now.
Do we still have troops stationed in Iraq? If not, then maybe training Ukrainian troops in Poland or something in the slides timeline.
Sliding timescale means he’s retroactively been in the Taliban now.
Danny, I don’t know if you are aware of this, but your parents suck too. Just not in such an obvious way as most of the parents in this comic.
Ignoring all that, don’t worry Sal he loves you more than any band, not just Coldplay. He knows you wouldn’t stand for being transferred, not that he would give you up either. He’s a good egg like 98% of the time.

Yea Sal, don’t worry,
Danny is never gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you
So Sal’s like Ticketmaster? No she’s not evil.
I don’t know, slowly but surely she is monopolizing of Danny’s heart.
The best kind of monopoly, though that isn’t saying much.
Or when bigot chicken swore they weren’t going to give any more money to people who wanted to torture queer people
Bigot Chicken. I hadn’t heard that one. I like it. I’ll have to try it out on a younger friend who works for them.
Sals looking pretty good here, the colours suit her and the styles a good match

Harrison seems okay, though Jacob is so dead-set on trying to match up to him, it makes me wonder.
once everyone graduates at least a small chunk of them will realize “oh i can move away and never talk to them again” other than being legally bound or so i’d think some would manage to make it far away
Is Danny’s dad named Roger?
Danny’s father is Randal, his mother is Sharon, and his older brother is Randy.
Danning it up, averted.
Yeah, I feel like I owe Danny an apology for thinking he was going to be slower to catch on than this. Then again, it doesn’t seem like Sal’s being particularly subtle about her feelings. (Which also shouldn’t be a surprise, because Sal.)
They’re not scoring well for parental relationships, no.
Heartbreakingly seconded.
I love you name BTW.
Mine, or Decidedly Orthogonal’s? Because both are pretty cool usernames.
(I also love your cat BTW)
Oh right, forgot Danny also has shitty parents. They’ve been rather overshadowed in that regard.
Right? They’re just shitty in a mundane way.
Feels like everyone’s got some sort of parental issues. They should form a support group.
… Would anyone be up for a game?
In the final panel, Sal says, “I’m non-transferrable. I ain’t Coldplay tickets.”
If you were telling your sweetie to treat you as unique and special, what fungible or non-fungible (shareable or non-shareable, exchangeable or non-interchangeable) thing would you compare yourself to?
For example: “I’m non-transferrable. I’m like earning tenure.” Or, in the alternative, “I’m non-transferable. I’m not a Netflix password.”
…Does that make sense? Anyone want to try?
I’m worthwhile! I’m not an NFT.
Rock on, you got it!
I can go:
“I’m like the coronavirus: once I’m with you, you won’t want anyone else to have me.”
Or, as Mike would say…
‘I’m non-transferrable… unlike YOUR MOM.” (*Dammit, Mike…)
Maybe I’ve just got Zelda on the mind, but the first thing I thought of was the Master Sword. No idea how to actually apply that do any of my own attributes, but I can’t think of anything else.
…. any references to soulbound gear is 20 years out of date, isn’t it? What’s more up to date?
… um, I’m non-transferable. Unlike ownership of Twitter.
Diablo 4 recently came out and it has soulbound / accountbound gear.
I’m polyamorous so… I guess I am transferable… like a virus.
Presumably people need your permission first, though, so maybe you’re more like downloadable software.
“The truth is a virus.”
-Pump up the Volume
I’m nontransferrable. I have DRM up the butt.
DRM? So there’s a cracked version of you available for free in an unofficial capacity that works better because it’s got the obstructive and poorly-optimised anti-piracy gunk taken out?
Dang I would date that version of me.
See, e.g.:
https://www.octopuspie.com/comic/012-bicycle-rights-management/
One way to get DRM (at least underneath) the butt.
Got a smile outta Sal. Danny’s so accidentally good at this relationship thing. (for once)
He keeps Danning it up, straight to the top of the podium.
Every time Sal is upset or frustrated or just in a mood, as soon as she runs into Danny, he gets her smiling, sometimes by doing nothing at all.
Been. There. Done. That.
For different, and possibly even worse, reasons.
But yeah. LOTS of paperwork. Big stack, all of which together spells NO, FUCK YOU.
I have a feeling Sal and Dan could bond over being the scapegoat of each family
well some parents do play favorites and have golden child after all
There’s having a golden child, and then there’s “You are unsuitable for a romantic partner, and we don’t respect you enough to let you make that decision for yourself.
Sounds like they’re failures as parents and people. Fuck ’em.
At the very least, it’s to show he understands what her frustration is, and the compliment is not meant dismissively.
Regular Island of Misfit Toys, aren’t they?
Say whatever about their music, but Coldplay can put on a damn good show.
Chris Martin is a machine.
So, Sal’s parents will approve of Danny, Danny’s parents will approve of Sal…
Dat awkward moment when I met my ex’s mum who suggested I date ex’s daughter instead (because we’re closer in age)
This has become far too much of an adorable relationship that i’m genuinely apprehensive of it falling apart at any moment. Willis has burned us one too many times.
they call her ‘Adventure of a Lifetime’ they way she turn the magic on
man I know it’s “just danny” but you’d think that like his parents could be even slightly nicer about him being with someone.
dude may not be very cool and was an idiot ranging to asshole about dorothy going to yale and totally fucked up in a horrible way with ethan
but he genuinely tries to help people and does nice things like make sandwiches for bike rides. the world needs more of such people and treating their whole life as only having worth in the context of finding someone else is pretty fucking awful.
outside the context of racists, murderers, homophobes, and homophobic murderers that we’re working in here, these are some pretty awful parents. dude probably would’ve been less of an idiot about dorothy if his parents weren’t all “you best stick with her forever” all the time.
Bravo Danny. He’s able to make Sal smile even in this difficult situation.
Should’ve gone with blink 182 it’s more topical
That makes it more dated later on, though. You’d read it and think “Oh yeah, that hilarious thing happened and one of the relatives went to a concert about it, six months beforehand.”
Hey, let’s not forget another real forked up truth: that if Sal’s parents find out she’s dating a white dude they might treat her better
wow this was an unfortunate draw of the avatar randomizer at this particular comment. Sorry all
I have been waiting for that to happen, yeah.
