I’ve been getting some really inquisitive looks from people because my hair is much longer than I normally like it to be. You know, with being scared of getting the plague so I haven’t cut my hair in since february.
Fear does serve a purpose, but it’s very helpful to distinguish between rational fear and irrational. Can this thing I’m scared of actually hurt me? And if it can, how likely is it? What are the costs and benefits of the actions I take to protect myself?
Finally got mine cut about a month ago, for the first time since November. (I was already a little overdue when things shut down.) I normally wear mine long, but I was getting excessively shaggy, even with a few self-administered trims.
I still don’t dare go in for a “real” cut, but about a month ago I couldn’t take it anymore and took a whack at it myself – trims in front and to the sides, and more in back where it was getting really shaggy.
The issue isn’t that the scissors are gross because their still bits of raw meat. The issue is that Walky didn’t clean them after cutting his hair and definitely didn’t tell Linda so she won’t know to clean them before she uses them the next time
Well, *he* certainly thinks the scissors are gross [and expects Sal to think that as well] or he wouldn’t have felt the need to reassure Sal that he washed his hands
If you want to theorize for a bit one of the silhouettes from the big group shot kind of looks like it could be Mike, possibly in a new outfit, which would imply he wakes up eventually or did wake up maybe.
Probably tomorrow or the day after when walky and Sal say hey to Joyce? I’m guessing she’s the focal point of all of the character portraits. Or when they’re inside the campus housing proper.
It’s also on the right-hand sidebar under the “Tweets”. Currently showing Joyce, Becky, Dorothy (w/Fuckface on her head), and the Walkerton twins, and they’ve gone from silhouette to full-color pic as they appear in this new storyline.
My theory is he was in a medically induced coma for 2-3 weeks to make sure any intracranial swelling went down and his skeletal/muscular injuries stabilized, and they gradually ramped up physical therapy for him since then.
They probably buzzed all his hair off (at least around the primary injury) in the ER, but three months should be enough time for some of it to grow back. If the silhouette in question ks Mike, either he’s regrowing the front part or he’s wearing a baseball hat.
Fuck laces. They’re an outdated technology and I don’t know why we still use them in the friggin’ Future Year 2020! I, too, have fancy shoes without laces. Loafers forever!
Because they’re cheap and they work. The casual shoes I wear daily are slip-ons, but I prefer laces for my work boots, because they’re much more comfortable if I can tie them fairly tight. I prefer zippers for my motorcycle boots, because I have a not totally rational fear of getting the laces caught in the drive chain. (Slip-ons are a strict no-go; in an accident they become slip-offs.) While velcro is often associated with cheap sneakers, my cycling shoes use velcro straps, and they’re probably the most expensive shoes I own. (Aside from the work boots, but at least the company helps pay for those.) Conclusion? Different closures may work best in different circumstances. Also, I have too many shoes.
I mean it’s also a vital accessibility thing for some disabled people (very much including me here – I can just about tie square knots these days but can’t judge spacing all that well so I still wear slip-ons or velcro because otherwise they WILL come untied. And tying knots is a very recent development with my motor skills.)
I’m not sure your comment was intended as a significant jab at Walky or not, but given how much you hate him, kinda hits home as a disabled person who literally could not tie knots at age 18 because of her disability.
Accepted. It’s one of those things people don’t think about the splash damage for until it’s pointed out in general, so I’m used to it. Ableism is unfortunately baked pretty deep into the public psyche, so it happens unintentionally a lot, (Still a hell of a lot better than the Straw Discourse, which has been rehashing the same points for years now – straws are an accessibility thing, plastic straws are literally the only option that fit everyone’s needs, vegetable oil plastics are all made out of pretty common allergens, reusable ones place the onus on disabled people as yet another thing we have to spend more money and effort providing, the invisibly disabled will be policed even worse than usual if it’s a ‘only give them to disabled people who ask’ thing, and the entire thing is putting emphasis on consumers with a focus on something that makes up a frankly minute amount of pollution instead of where it belongs on the companies that are ruining things for everyone. Or at least plastic bags or balloons if you really want to talk about single-use plastics. Like I said, plural years of these exact same points, and it is almost always a ‘well have you tried’ doubling down.)
I tie my shoes kinda loose so I can slip them on and off without untying them. The only times I tie a pair of shoes is when I first get them and when they come untied on their own.
They deserve it after dealing with their parents for however long. I'm actually glad we did a time skip now because I don't think I have the blood pressure for seeing Linda for that long.
I wonder if Sal went to see them for Thanksgiving or if this is her first time back since boarding school? We know she wasn't home over the summer because Walky hadn't seen her since boarding school at the start of the strip.
Right? Walky finally gets a new hairstyle after so many, many years (even if it’s one born of apathy,) and Sal has leveled up in self-acceptance/not giving a shit what her shitty parents say! I’m so happy.
Sometimes people will cut apart meat with scissors and will have a pair dedicated to that task. Usually very soft meat that would squish under a proper knife but is too tough to tear with your bare hands.
Pretty sure it’s just the big sharp scissors which come with kitchen knife sets. While we always refer to them as kitchen scissors/shears, can confirm they are fantastic for cutting hair.
Oh GOD this reminds me of the time I walked in on my brother using my fabric-only scissors, that I had sharpie’d “FABRIC ONLY” on all sides, to open a pack of chicken. And you can bet I was over there in 0.004 seconds to snatch it away, all while yelling “YOU KNOW HOW TO READ, WHY ARE YOU USING THEM, YOU KNOW HOW TO READ!!!”
Needless to say I do not keep my sewing supplies around the house anymore.
Fortunately they were some regular Scotch brand scissors that I had been using as fabric scissors atm But still! Now that I’ve really been getting serious in a way I hadn’t been in a long time, I have upgrades! And those NEVER leave my room. If there’s something my brother wants to do, he does it! No hesitation, no thinking, certInly no reading :9 so now there’s zero ammo.
I hate people like that. My older brother is like that and after 30 years of this trash I finally found it in me to say “Family does not get a pass. They’re with you by accident, so if they hurt you by choice then you walk away from them the same as you would anyone else.”
Nah, I expect Linda’s first response to her kids disappointing her is doubling down on being controlling. (Since… well, we’ve seen her do it with Sal.) Honestly I suspect Walky only gets away from her demands by going no-contact for at least a while. Maybe he can manage limited contact if she doesn’t pull the same ultimatum shit she did with Sal and nuke those chances from orbit while he’s still financially dependent on her, but sooner or later she’s going to ‘inform’ him what his real major is, and what the consequences are if he refuses.
Walky’s hair doesn’t look as big as the second-from-the-left silhouette in the cast photo, though. I originally thought it was Asher until someone suggested Walky and pointed out the untied shoes. Maybe Walky’s hair gets bigger as time goes on?
I LOVE Walky’s jacket-and-hoodie look, and I hope he keeps it
Weren’t you listening? Walky *refused* to be traumatize by that kidnapping. Naturally this means no drastic behavioral changes would happen, such as standing up to Linda even the tiniest bit.
Well this is a little disappointing, I was hoping that the new silhouettes meant that Sal would now be wearing her all-natural, un-straightened hair to spite her parents, and that Walky would be doing the same to support Sal. Instead it seems like he’s just trying to steal Asher’s look. Still it seems like a step in the right direction.
She’s straightening her hair less. I expect if she does decide to go natural, Willis will show us the process of her making that decision and the fallout with her parents.
I wonder who will be next. I mean in Willis’s place I’d save Mike till last to maintain the expense. Meaning Amber will probably be delayed as well, as that is the obvious grouping.
Ruth and Billie would be the obvious choice as the next revealed. Danny and Joe is also possible. Other groupings seem less likely, unless we repeat characters.
I do think that Walky is trying various low-energy ways to show that he’s done being Linda and Charles’ perfect son. Threatening Amber was the last straw for him.
Doubt it – Willis seems to be ignoring COVID, in his strips. It’s understandable, as COVID would throw a lot of his preplanned story straight out the window.
Also it’s January, so incorporating it would still be weird. It wouldn’t have an effect in January of 2020, but is likely to still be a big problem in the start of 2021
Fair answers, all. I was just curious as to why BOTH Walkertons had left their hair uncut, and my mind immediately jumped to “lockdowns. Can’t go out” as the reason, especially considering that this arc starts in January when stuff REALLY started to hit the fan.
Oh you used the meat scissors to cut hair. And? Made gravy with OLD bacon grease for the dog one winter, stirred in the kibble. Without thinking treated it like any old gravy and licked the spoon. mmm, yeah bacon grease was a bit stale, not rancid, gee this is kind of gritty…oh yeah, dog food. Eh, good enough. Mildly embarrassed not grossed.
I once bought a couple of cans of dog food by mistake. I was just about to open one up and heat it up when I looked a little closer at the label and saw it said “for dogs”. In my defense, that was in fairly small type, and the rest of the label looked more like something you’d expect on a can of soup intended for humans. And the description made it sound delicious. Also, I found it on the clearance aisle, not in the pet department.
today in #9chickweedlane i learned we have to be shown children learning and relearning what sex is, for Reasons, even though they already clearly know and have prepared nuanced questions about it!
also that Gran must hate, if she's still alive, how Old Juliette is the same but with gray hair

It's not a new argument, of course, but Chesterton dismissed it effectively in 1908.

wilbur, savvy enough to know he's in a comic strip but still not a great actor, awkwardly lifts a muffin up into frame so that we, the audience, understand that he has a muffin right now, which is very important narratively, but he's not really selling it well as an organic, human action
oh good, they survived the Linda
They survived. Physically speaking.
To the point their dad is the one that brought them to school.
… I want to say Walky looks taller and I have absolutely no idea why I’d think that.
The building sunk an inch into the ground over Christmas.
He’s been slowly growing a spine for Sal.
I enjoyed this comment enough that I am making my first post here to tell you this.
No the building that sinks an inch a year is the Well’s Library, that’s nearly 7 blocks away
Scribe a mark on the foundation and you will see the truth.
( pranksters add extra soil to the surrounding flower beds each year )
He looks a bit taller than Sal here.
Sal’s hair is pushing her down.
Seriously, that much hair must weigh a ton.
Yes, it does*
*citation – my wife’s hair, when worn loose, brushes the ground. She says it’s pretty heavy.
It’s the hair.
I… I have never found Walky this attractive.
No, wait, let me fix that.
I have never before found Walky attractive.
But… that haircut…
I’ve been getting some really inquisitive looks from people because my hair is much longer than I normally like it to be. You know, with being scared of getting the plague so I haven’t cut my hair in since february.
Same. I call it being prudent instead of being scared on account of I have a lot of experience at lying to myself.
Fear is nothing to be ashamed of, it’s nature’s way of telling us “No, no, no! Don’t do *that* you moron! You could get hurt!”
I finally cut my own hair for the first time. It turned out a lot better than I expected.
He has started snorting helium to cope.
Platforms
I wanna say it’s because of the vertical lines of the jacket, but I don’t know enough about design and optics to be super confident in that.
Hey, meat scissors are probably good for your hair
…and I notice he didn’t say he washed the meat scissors
I’m, uh, nobody’s idea of a Board-of-Health-approved kitchen cleaner, but my kitchen shears are always cleaned right away. What’s with Linda?
The issue isn’t that the scissors are gross because their still bits of raw meat. The issue is that Walky didn’t clean them after cutting his hair and definitely didn’t tell Linda so she won’t know to clean them before she uses them the next time
By the time she uses them the hair bacteria and cooties will have died. It’ll be fine.
Particularly since I won’t be eating there.
I wonder if she will notice the trimmings on the floor. Would Walky clean up after himself or not?
He probably did it in the mirror over the bathroom sink. Maybe he ran the faucet for a second and rinsed some of the trimmings near the drain.
Linda will blame Sal when she notices.
I mean, if these scissors are only used on meat, anything they touch will be thoroughly heat-sanitized by the time they’re consumed.
You might still end up eating a Walky fur-burger.
And, NOW, I’m gonna stop reading the comments!
Ah, of course. I wasn’t thinking that way. (Of course, I’ve never trimmed my hair with kitchen shears.)
Well, *he* certainly thinks the scissors are gross [and expects Sal to think that as well] or he wouldn’t have felt the need to reassure Sal that he washed his hands
See the hover text.
He does that in my kitchen, he’ll eat those scissors. That’s disgusting.
More importantly, he didn’t say he washed his *hair*.
He kinda looks a musician with that style.
I was gonna say, I think he looks better like that. Tiny little bit of a badass.
It’s the jacket. It gives him shoulders.
I know, right?
Walky is rocking that hairdo.
It’s the sideburns.
Danny’s hat had better be long burned by now.
Oh no, Walky growing his hair out is going to be hot…
He’s just doing it because he can’t grow a beard.
Appropriate gravatar is appropriate.
Get A Haircut–and get a real job
Clean your act up and don’t be a slob
Get your act together like yer Big Brother Bob…
So I tucked my hair up under my hat and I went in to ask him ‘why‘.
Bob Walkeron? Bobky?
Nah, not buying it.
Soooo, is Mike still comatose after 3 months?
If you want to theorize for a bit one of the silhouettes from the big group shot kind of looks like it could be Mike, possibly in a new outfit, which would imply he wakes up eventually or did wake up maybe.
Where do I find that big group shot?!
Not sure where you can find an updated one with Sal and Walky added but it’s underneath the comic a couple pages or so back.
Predicting the next reveal will be Dina.
He’s only being defensive because he doesn’t actually know HOW to tie his shoes. Velcro exists for the Walky’s of the world.
I will admit to wearing slip on dress shoes for almost all occasions to avoid having to deal with laces.
Fuck laces. They’re an outdated technology and I don’t know why we still use them in the friggin’ Future Year 2020! I, too, have fancy shoes without laces. Loafers forever!
Oxfords, not brogues. A gentleman wears laced shoes.
Manners maketh man.
I think Guy DeMaupassant would disagree; “Clothes Make the Man.”
Winchester College.
Sneakers make me a gentleman? Sweet!
There are varying degrees of ‘gentleman’.
I was meant to be a jab at Walky but I apologize if I offended you or any other disabled person. That was unintended.
And paper straws make everything taste funny.
It’s the dissolving, I think. They’re such a non-solution.
I tie my shoes kinda loose so I can slip them on and off without untying them. The only times I tie a pair of shoes is when I first get them and when they come untied on their own.
They both look fantastic with their new hair!
Wait, Walky has an upper lip now?
The twins are slowly growing similar…
And Dumbiverse Walky hasn’t even broken out the seaweed and coconuts.
You should check out Joyce too. Walky standing up for Sal was when it all started, upper lip wise. I like it!
Sure! It’s where he keeps his manly ‘stache! The few sparse hairs of it, at least.
It’s not very stiff, tho.
Sal is on speaking-ish terms with Charles, but Linda isn’t present?
Good.
Sal talks to them, but she’s gotten very good at talking to them without saying too much.
And they talk right back at her.
(Not “to” or “with”, just “at”. That’s probably for the best.)
The Walkerton twins look so GOOD! <333
Walky looks like Asher, and Sal doesn’t like that.
Ha ha ha, I was just thinking that maybe Walky is trying to look cool like Asher (subconsciously or not).
I. . .uh. . .request clarification for “Meat Scissors”. No matter what I picture in my head it does not come out well.
Sometimes people will cut apart meat with scissors and will have a pair dedicated to that task. Usually very soft meat that would squish under a proper knife but is too tough to tear with your bare hands.
There are actually specific “kitchen shears” one feature of which is a groove designed to cut through small bones.
Pretty sure it’s just the big sharp scissors which come with kitchen knife sets. While we always refer to them as kitchen scissors/shears, can confirm they are fantastic for cutting hair.
In googling the term, “poultry shears” comes up, and I feel like that should help. Mostly I’m saying that it’s safe to google.
Now, why on Earth wouldn’t it be safe?
Well, you see there is this thing called the Internet and …
. . . it has these numbered rules, you see . . .
…And the thirty-fourth rule says…
…without exception…
Walky looks literally no different to me…
Aww the twins’ hair!!! Walky’s look brings back memories of my college days, free from high school’s strict grooming rules.
kinda love Sal’s hair
IKR
Does she have Jheri curls? Or is that really too old hat?
Oh GOD this reminds me of the time I walked in on my brother using my fabric-only scissors, that I had sharpie’d “FABRIC ONLY” on all sides, to open a pack of chicken. And you can bet I was over there in 0.004 seconds to snatch it away, all while yelling “YOU KNOW HOW TO READ, WHY ARE YOU USING THEM, YOU KNOW HOW TO READ!!!”
Needless to say I do not keep my sewing supplies around the house anymore.
God. And they were FABRIC SCISSORS those things lose edge fast. Ugh.
I hope they weren’t the nice $60 Gingher or Wiss scissors, they are spendy.
Proud of you for being able to recognize that! I’m very very much in agreement.
Oh no, this is a very good look on him.
Appropriate avatar is appropriate.
HeeeEEEeeey! Maybe Dad dropped them off by himself because Linda took off or something. It could happen…
Maybe, but probably she had better things to do.
Walky is finally standing up for himself so now Linda has written off both her kids? I can believe that.
I don’t care for Linda Walkerton. At all.
No updated cast photo? Aw.
The cast photos might get updated after everyone in the Decade 2 art is revealed.
Willis hinted at that on Twitter the other day.
Speaking of, I wonder if ol’ pudding head there in Dara’s grav finished letting her natural color grow out, or finally touched up her roots.
She re-dyed it immediately after her last appearance. However her hair grows really fast so it’s back to puddinghead status quo.
The both look so good!
Walky’s hair doesn’t look as big as the second-from-the-left silhouette in the cast photo, though. I originally thought it was Asher until someone suggested Walky and pointed out the untied shoes. Maybe Walky’s hair gets bigger as time goes on?
I LOVE Walky’s jacket-and-hoodie look, and I hope he keeps it
Mom’s Meat Scissors would be a great name for a band.
Or an extremely specific niche show on YT
I used your mom’s meat curtains.
That’s a terribly inefficient way to cut hair.
Also, if you’re Mike speaking from the afterlife, don’t forget to mention the nickel.
Walky’s new look seems nice, but he is still a manchild.
The time skip and traumatic experiences have really changed Walky. Made him so much more mature, so much more dignified. yeah…
Weren’t you listening? Walky *refused* to be traumatize by that kidnapping. Naturally this means no drastic behavioral changes would happen, such as standing up to Linda even the tiniest bit.
“No, seriously bro, cut your hair. We’re twins, if we’re not careful we’ll end up looking exactly alike.”
Which immediately gave DYW a slipshine.
Oh Sal has been letting her hair puff a little.
In fact, I’m beginning to think that Willis didn’t show us their illustrations in the group banner because these aren’t even their final forms!
P.S. I’m betting that Walky is rooming with Jacob now.
I like their new longer hairstyles, but I’m starting to wonder if anyone got a haircut over those 3 months we skipped.
Becky at least did. Her hair is longer but still very asymmetrical, that requires pruning.
The silhouettes suggest Billie did.
*suspense
Walky still has more hair care then I do
hey, I gave myself a mohawk, so *shrug*
Careful, dude. That could be considered an insensitive act of “cultural appropriation” nowadays.
Oh no they have more amazing hair
Hm. I prefer Sal with straight hair…
(just a personal preference – I’m aware of the natural hair debate)
Bisexual voice: oh no they’re both hot!!!
Loving everyone’s new hair….wonder if we will get someone who has dyed theirs for the full college hair experience?
I do think that Walky is trying various low-energy ways to show that he’s done being Linda and Charles’ perfect son. Threatening Amber was the last straw for him.
Wait… Was the whole time lapse just a way of catching up the DoA timeverse to current event to incorporate the COVID pandemic?
Doubt it – Willis seems to be ignoring COVID, in his strips. It’s understandable, as COVID would throw a lot of his preplanned story straight out the window.
The school’s open. No one’s wearing masks.
Also it’s January, so incorporating it would still be weird. It wouldn’t have an effect in January of 2020, but is likely to still be a big problem in the start of 2021
Can’t we just have a little escape from our horrific reality?
Fair answers, all. I was just curious as to why BOTH Walkertons had left their hair uncut, and my mind immediately jumped to “lockdowns. Can’t go out” as the reason, especially considering that this arc starts in January when stuff REALLY started to hit the fan.
Did he wash his hair though or does he have meat-hair?
This IS Walky. Hopefully his Mom cleans the scissors after each use.
Oh no, Walky’s hot.
I don’t know how to deal with this.
80’s anime protagonist hair.
You still ate it, right?
Nice. Long hair are the best.
Damn Walky looks real cute in panel 2. It’s the hair plus that expression
Fuck. Fuck. No. Walkys hot now. Oh God. No. Fuck. I can’t handle this.
are “meat scissors” really a thing?
like, i know kitchen shears are a thing but i’d expect them to be washed thoroughly after each use, especially after uses involving meat
I have kitchen scissors and poultry secateurs, but it wouldn’t surprise or confuse me if someone like Walky referred to either as “meat scissors”.
it’s the fact that he thinks Sal will have concerns that will be addressed by telling her he washed his hands afterwards that gets me.
Remaining character silhouette guesses (from left to right):
Ruth, Dina, Carla, Joe, Sarah, Mike, Amber, Billie, Danny, Lucy, Malaya
Is it Lucy? That ones been bothering me. I thought her hair was abit more roundish then that. (Though I definitely wouldn’t argue against more Lucy).
The shape is reminiscent of her hairstyle in Shortpacked!, and the height relative to Malaya matches up.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
(This was the only strip I could find with both of them standing in the same frame.)

so many characters getting longer hair <3
He has to balance out Jeph.
How come Sal’s hair looks like layers of it shortened? Isn’t most of it the same length?
M- me- MEAT SCISSORS?!
For cutting, not made of.
he can have a little depression, as a treat
So that’s what happens when Walky doesn’t slouch.
