It was a clear, calm day. I didn’t see anything I haven’t seen on the Chesapeake Bay, which is my usual yardstick.

Also, it was Chicago. I was paying more attention to the largest city I’ve ever seen.

This was a fairly nice seeing as how most of the dialogue was by Joyce and every bit of it was calm, serene and sincere. I think nostalgia has hit her a little though. Probably is a little homesick even though it’s only been a few days.

Seriously, though, it’s one of the few channels left on TV that I can still stomach. It has a bunch of shows about places to go, things to see, and delicious stuff to eat across the US and the world.

Unfortunately, it’s beginning the inevitable death spiral. If you’re not all about the food (which I am), the rest of the content has become all too rare, and it has suffered the rotting plague of all educational / info channels — some show about supernatural crap (haunted locations) and its first “docutainment” reality show — something involving movers.

If you do like food, though, it has “Man v. Food” and “Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations.” I don’t really like TV, but I sometimes enjoy them.

Mt Baldy is a pretty awesome dune, I have to agree. The Lake Michigan shoreline has some grade-A nature, and I love spending time almost anywhere along it.

Mt. Baldy’s really fun to roll down on as well, although rolling towards the lake wasn’t such a good idea. Last time I did that, I didn’t like how much rust was in the sand from the semi-nearby industry and I was finding bits of metal too. That’s why I prefer the Dunes State Park.

That truck looks suspiciously familiar. I’m tempted to say it’s a version of an actual truck Willis had for almost two decades, which showed up occasionally in “It’s Walky!” and was eulogized in song in a “Shortpacked!” comic after it blew up.

In which case, it already has a name, but I can’t remember for the life of me what it is.

Too bad you can’t climb Mt. Baldy anymore. At least not from the parking lot, given the slow creep of the mountain towards the parking lot given the thousands of people climbing, shifting the sand over the years. You technically still can, but you’ll just get in trouble if caught.

*sigh* Reminds me of Sleeping Bear Dunes; my favorite passtime. That place has a GIGANTIC hill that I never got to run down when I was litte ’cause it was so steep. So, when I took a trip there later with my wife (then girlfriend) I did not hesitate to run down that sucker like a little child. My wife, of course, didn’t know that was my intention. She assumed, when she saw it, that I would understand how long it would take to GET BACK UP. I did not think of that. I was too excited. Took me a little under and hour to walk back up that son of a bongo – that’s how steep it was. You literally can only walk a few feet before getting tired, especially if you’re not used to pacing yourself. Every few feet was another rest stop!

I never regretted it. Someday i’ll probably do it again.

Hm, I guess you’re right, David Grubb (do I know you? I did change my name….), it looks more like Paynetown, but the rocks reminded me of the rocks up along the sidewalk and towards the concession stand at Fairfax. I remember in ’83, the lake was flooded and came up almost to the Fairfax parking lot. The beach was of course closed and there were no lifeguards, but it was packed once the heat hit roundabout April or May. Memories….

On my first read through, I didn’t connect Mount Baldy with Michigan City. Now that I did, this makes me super excited. I’m from Michigan, but my family would spend a week at a cabin in Michigan City most summers when I was growing up. Also, when I was seventeen I took two friends with me and looked into the churches in the area some because I knew one of my friends would like to go. There were A LOT of them, many of which I would have been super uncomfortable going to. I did find at least one, though, that I felt I, as a queer person, would still be safe and perfectly welcome at.
