She was – I thought – less angry at innocent (she was unperturbed by peoples reactions about if she was not supposed to swear “Joyce hasn’t said shit or fuck”) as specifically the infantilization and not being regarded as an adult when she made out with Becky. It seems in her book innocent is ok, but immature is not.
Does anyone else think that Dina never really “arrives” in a comic? Like, her every appearance I just imagine the “camera” panning over to reveal that’s she’s there and has been for an indeterminate amount of time.
I’m not sure about Joyce, but Dina I think shifts her 3d z-axis position, which allows her to both maintain scientific validity, appear to teleport, *and* be ‘invisible’ to those trapped in the base 2d plane of the comic while still able to observe it herself.

That is not even the weirdest thing about Dina: she seems to be able to survive purely on a diet of sugar cereals and soda (and that one time chicken nuggets), can stand without moving for hours or days at a time, and is easily able to subdue prey many times her size. Its like Willis secretly never gave up the SiFy genre at all. Honestly, its kind of weird that Joyce became an atheist, when half her friends don’t even obey the laws of biology or physics.
Dina moves through the quantum mechanic system of uncertainty. She exists in a superposition of being in multiple locations at the same time. Only under certain conditions of observation is her location determined.
I mean given the position of the door in the frame I think this appearance, at least, is absolutely a camera pan. How long has she been there? Who knows?
Given which of them spends more time shipping everyone she meets, I’d imagine AG would be sending Amber to horny jail. I also cannot read it without hearing PotasticP’s “you’re going to jail,” audio.
Carla is saying that her plans-within-plans are beyond the understanding of Joyce’s mere normal brain. Joyce is saying ‘nuh-uh!’
As for who needs to be sent to horny jail, given that Amber was the one that said it to Dina, probably either Dina does, or some third party Amber was talking about (perhaps the chat of her livestream). But probably Dina. She was probably talking about some interaction with Becky with an overly sexual implication.
If Dina was talking about her feelings about Becky and herself, it’s possible that Amber was using it as an imperative. It seems more likely to me that Amber was discussing someone else or even herself. Presumably we’ll get context next strip.
Yeah, but my understanding of the galaxy brain meme is that a “galaxy brain” take is one that superficially appears to be a smarter extrapolation from the normal brain one by a mind that can see all the angles but, when you stop to think about it, is actually very stupid.
Like, I spend a lot of time on Lefty Twitter, and I often see them QRTing some of the “five-dimensional chess” rightwingers with the comment “This is some Galaxy Brain shit.” This is not meant as a compliment on their insight.
What concerns me about conversing with memes is that they often fade from popular culture (and memory) so fast that in a few years people are going to look back at there texts (or this comic) and have no idea what’s going on.
I love how the Tamarian way of communicating is basically meme references. Still not sure how their language would work when doing stuff like making spaceships or other highly technical tasks though.

It’s one of those cool concepts that’s useful for thematic points and the plot of the week, but doesn’t really hold together as worldbuilding if you take it seriously. So if you do try, you wind up having to patch it with ideas like that.

Just like one could say, “Wow, you sure are a nice guy,” in a deadpan way after someone brags about stealing candy from a baby. (Usually, if the person you’re talking about would describe THEMSELF with the same word and mean it, then it’s a good candidate for sarcasm.)

I’m sure the words on her door are supposed to say “Ultra Carla”, but with Joyce’s head in the way it spells out “Ultra Car”. Nice reference to the other universe version of her.
It does actually read “Ultra Car”, as we’ve seen in other strips—the Dumbiverse Ultra Car was the protagonist of her short-lived titular animated cartoon series created by the “reclusive-but-wealthy” in-universe David Willis (better-known in-universe as the creator of the still-ongoing Dexter and Monkey Master series), which was canned by the network ostensibly because the merchandise wasn’t selling well…but not before it had gained a devoted lifelong fan in child!Carla, who as she grew older not only decided to pattern her appearance after Ultra Car (dyeing her hair red for instance), but is implied to have actually chosen the new name “Carla” for herself as a result of how crucially-important Ultra Car was o her childhood.

3. YAY DINA! I was looking forward for more Dina and Joyce interactions since Joyce ‘came out’ as an Atheist. Dina is also an Atheist, and she’s a lot more outspoken about it compared to Dorothy’s nonconfrontational attitude (or at least Dina is more confrontational when Faith starts trying to meddle with actual scientific findings).
I wonder how she’ll react when she finds out that Joyce has ‘renounced magical thinking’ and to the whole Becky vs. Joyce conflict. Because on one hand she and Joyce were never really super-close and she Loves Becky, but on the other hand the reason why they never got a long *was* mostly Joyce’s Young Earth Creationist Bullshit.
According to Willis in the comments yesterday, Sarah deliberately made Liz sit in the middle seat so Liz wouldn’t be able to escape as easily. I don’t think “choice” factored much into it.

Hi, not related to today’s comic, but I figured this is a place I hear a lot of thoughtful people talk about life experiences, so. I’m a long time atheist and I am genuinely curious about why atheists convert to specific religions when it’s not for people or communities. What that journey tends to look like and why it happens.
Does anyone have stories or know a place I can read those stories without getting proselytized to?
I don’t know if it’s the same situation, but I got curious about other religions, occultism…Even about chistianism, but watching about people entering in trance by Holy Spirit, and etc

How did Sarah, who’s not close with anyone except Joyce, ever get close enough to Carla to warrant her asking for a favour? Also, is Carla indeed a giant jerk to slam the door in Joyce’s face like that?
Carla and Sarah are both Sophomores. They’ve probably known each other longer than most of the others in the cast.
I’m sure the words on her door are supposed to say “Ultra Carla”, but with Joyce’s head in the way it spells out “Ultra Car”. Nice reference to the other universe version of her.
It does actually read “Ultra Car”, as we’ve seen in other strips—the Dumbiverse Ultra Car was the protagonist of her short-lived titular animated cartoon series created by the “reclusive-but-wealthy” in-universe David Willis (better-known in-universe as the creator of the still-ongoing Dexter and Monkey Master series), which was canned by the network ostensibly because the merchandise wasn’t selling well…but not before it had gained a devoted lifelong fan in child!Carla, who as she grew older not only decided to pattern her appearance after Ultra Car (dyeing her hair red for instance), but is implied to have actually chosen the new name “Carla” for herself as a result of how crucially-important Ultra Car was o her childhood.

Damn, I was hoping for a strip that’s just 4 panels of Liz and Sarah sitting in grumpy silence in the car where the only thing that changes is the background.
We’re going to get those, but they’ll be interspersed among the rest of the stuff going on back on campus today.
They’ll pop up on a cliffhanger so that Willis can laugh maniacally at our pain.

2. Huh, since the previous comic had Liz in the middle seat – I assumed Joyce was also in the car with Sarah and Liz. Guess there’s some other ridesharing random person in the Off-Panel Seat because I cannot imagine sitting Middle Seat by choice.
3. YAY DINA! I was looking forward for more Dina and Joyce interactions since Joyce ‘came out’ as an Atheist. Dina is also an Atheist, and she’s a lot more outspoken about it compared to Dorothy’s nonconfrontational attitude (or at least Dina is more confrontational when Faith starts trying to meddle with actual scientific findings).
I wonder how she’ll react when she finds out that Joyce has ‘renounced magical thinking’ and to the whole Becky vs. Joyce conflict. Because on one hand she and Joyce were never really super-close and she Loves Becky, but on the other hand the reason why they never got a long *was* mostly Joyce’s Young Earth Creationist Bullshit.
According to Willis in the comments yesterday, Sarah deliberately made Liz sit in the middle seat so Liz wouldn’t be able to escape as easily. I don’t think “choice” factored much into it.
I would really like Dina to become involved in the atheism drama, but that might resolve things too quickly.
On the other hand it might cause drama between Dina and Becky since we know Becky’s trying to nudge Joyce back to Christianity
Given how Dina reacted when she thought Joyce was pulling Becky back into fundie-land, I would suspect Dina not to be down with Becky trying to shut down Joyce similarly.
It would be interesting if it started with Dina and Joyce talking about it. I suspect Becky and Dina talking will happen, but that’ll be later.

I find it strangely wholesome that Joyce is now on a level of familiarity with Dina that she can immediately know what the situation is without her needing to elaborate.
My prediction: Dina takes Joyce’s side, not realizing it is a side.
My hopes and dreams: Horrible, painful, soul-wrenching drama for everyone involved.
Irascible Joyce is super fun when she’s not being an asshat.
I thought Horny Jail was Amber’s permanent residence.
