Joyce won’t be able to move a muscle tomorrow, and she didn’t touch a single exermaciser

i mean, it /could/ be but depends on the situation , and maybe total weight, a lot of ppl are taller than me buti feel like i’ve seen more scrawny skinny ppl than overweight ones, or they’re an ‘average’ weight but b/c their tallness distributes like that, they lack muscle themslves lol
But is it fun to lift/hug someone wearing very little…? Someone soft and squishy and semi-undressed?
I thought that Joyce’s problems weren’t necessarily muscle-related but rather purity-related..
I took it more as a “if I stop restraining her, she will attack” situation.
I think it’s more a repeat of the injured toe phenomenon, but now it’s every muscle and joint from her ankles to her neck. A cold dead-lift and carry of maybe 150% of Joyce’s weight probably wasn’t a good idea.

Only once in my career as an above average tall guy i had the luxury of lifting someone both slightly heavier and taller than me, in an act of pure tomfoolery, and man, just thinking about it makes this nagging eternal back pain i’ve been having ever since come back to the forefront.
It’s not even the weight, it’s how you angle yourself to get their feet off the ground, absolute spine breaker.
Same. End of basic training post-final ruck march(13km) fireman carry. They lovingly paired me with a guy 30lbs heavier than me. And both our rifles, gear, helmets etc. Good times. It’s like the CAF was trying to give out medical pensions.

There are more slap stick-ish things a more crude writer could have come up with for this scene. The anime version of this has the girls fall on Jacob with multiple candid shots of his hands on them with his face somehow buried in both sets of boobs and their hands on him and their hands on each other. I prefer this level of goofy humor.

“Anime version” is kind of a weird way to categorize a type of sexist humor that’s super popular in the west. Or was Whedon’s cut of Justice League secretly anime?
(Sorry but this is a real bee in my bonnet. Don’t love seeing “anime” as shorthand for “gross overly sexual and bad” in 2023, the same way it was used in the 90s by people angry about the entire concept of cartoons that might not be strictly for children and happy to be racist in the process.)
Huh, never seen that kind of over the top horny slapstick much in western comedy. Y’know outside of like, the live action grinch
literally every Joss Whedon project has at least one scene where a male character falls face first into a woman’s breasts. It’s like as much of a staple as his quippy dialogue
To be blunt, you haven’t watched enough R-rated comedies. I think pratfalling into boobs is a very specific trope, but we have examples of it, and we have loooooads of spiritually identical jokes. Is the famous scene in There’s Something About Mary where she has semen in her hair as hair gel somehow less horny?
Like I do not watch this genre of movies either, but I promise Ace Ventura and Dumb and Dumber also had terrible sexual slapstick, and I promise The Hangover did, too.
The comedies of the 70s and 80s were also rife with this kind of humor despite not being R-rated (Ghostbusters, for example). And things like Shrek do winking nods in that general direction, much more coyly.
If you feel like you’re more likely to just run into that sort of thing in anime where you weren’t expecting it — I’d say that’s down to a few things.
1. America in particular is kind of screwed up about sex. Explicit sex is given a much higher age restriction than explicit violence. But also, a lot of very specific types of sexual humor slide under our radar and don’t register as being sex jokes: when the main characters on How I Met Your Mother got really excited to realize the young women they’d just met were too drunk to legally consent to sex, for example, or the dozens of times when some sort of “you know what they do to guys like you in prison” joke gets made in sometimes literally kid movies. And no, the joke is not talking about people being beaten up.
2. Different levels of knowledge. You might be familiar with Seth MacFarlane, so you know what to expect from a cartoon from him. You probably lack the same level of familiarity with Japanese anime studios. You would also recognize that something like South Park airs really late at night, on a cable network, in a block of programming for adults, but you won’t have that same knowledge of what channel or programming block a random anime was part of.
Like, as westerners, it’s easy to view anime as a monolith and our own country’s media as obviously diverse. But not only are we losing context like time slot and channel and the reputation of any given studio — not only do we lack an easy analog for anime like the MPAA ratings — we also have to contend with the fact that only a fraction of anime and manga ever actually make it to our shores.
“If this were anime, there would be loads of fan service and Jacob would faceplant into boobs” is just kind of a wild statement about an entire medium. If we understand that “like you’d expect from a Disney cartoon” and “like you’d expect from a WB cartoon” and “like you’d expect from a Tex Avery cartoon” and “like you’d expect from a Seth MacFarlane cartoon” are all talking about very different things… well.
We should understand that the same is true of anime, and that our inability to be more specific about which studios we’re talking about… maybe indicates that we lack the expertise to be making this comparison at all.
Yeah, Ace Ventura was the one that had that horrifically transphobic scene at the end about “finding Captain Winky” or whatever. Even at the time, back when that sort of thing was much more “okay” than it is now, it was still execrable. And Ghostbusters (a PG movie, mind you) had the infamous “blowjob ghost,” which was a real WTAF moment from an otherwise good movie.
But yeah, forget about all that stuff, Japanimation is nothing but all those henties I heard about. What’s that you say? Studio Jibblies? Never heard of it. /s

Eh, maaaybe top 5, but top 3 is doubtful at best. And while she probably couldn’t handle either of the top two, Ruth can handle Sarah just fine. That’s at least three DoA ladies above Sarah, easily, before we even try to figure out how much of a power multiplier Joyce gets from sheer rage.
…but maybe if Sarah BETRAYED all of the above and locked them in the Hyperbolic Dorm Hall…?
You’re mistaking fighting ability with strength. Amber and Sal easily outmatch Sarah in combat but it’s been shown multiple times how strong Sarah is. Most recently dragging Joe about like he was a bag of trash. The girls you mentioned minus Ruth have more impressive fights but haven’t shown equal feats of strength… Maybe Amber, but it’s kind of hard to gauge the power of all her punches.
Top 3 strongest are Carla, Ruth, and Sarah. The ranking is pretty interchangeable between the three, but I lean toward Ruth who tossed a significantly sized dude (Blaine) over her head as #1.
I’m more than eager to hear any arguments or suggestions.

Given the stuff we’ve seen Amazi-Girl do, I’m pretty sure Amber’s #1. She’s not tall, but those thicc thighs aren’t flab. They’re the muscle that lets her leap up to rooftops or onto speeding cars. I suspect she’s heavier than she looks. She has to have an awful lot of dense fighter’s muscle concealed by the surface padding.

I’m not really interested in trying to discern character stat, there’s so many comic antics and visual metaphors/idioms it seems kind of futile anyways. But maybe I’m just feeling contrarian. This isn’t Ruth lifting Blaine and throwing him over her head. It’s Blaine lunging, Ruth using his momentum in addition to her lifting, and her falling.
Strong and being able to do feats of strength aren’t quite the same thing. Ruth is incredibly skinny and gangly and probably incredibly malnourished from her depression and she can still lift people bodily and suplex them because she knows how to use her weight leverage. Amber and Sarah are probably way up there though. Amb/AG has that incredible compact strength and Sarah is REAL tall.
Yeah, that toss was explicitly the kind of sacrifice throw that really doesn’t rely on strength. She didn’t really lift Blaine at all there, so much as spin him as she dropped. His center of mass didn’t go up.
I don’t think we’ve got a lot of evidence for sheer strength for any of the characters. Even dragging Joe involved “scoot” sound effects, which suggests something different than just hauling dead weight.
See. This is why feats are what’s important for power rankings in this comic anyway. Unfortunately for power scaling this isn’t a combat focused comic so we have to rely on feats. I’d love to put Amber/AG at the top but she just doesn’t have the record. Funny enough the most consistent feat of strength among the girls has nothing to do with fighting but throwing around Jennifer. That’s something Sarah, Ruth, Carla, and Amber have done with little to modest effort. But unfortunately for Amber, Sarah and Ruth have done more. Throwing around Blaine may have seemed momentum based but we can only really speculate on effort. Same with Sarah dragging Joe.
We can assume things, but those assumptions are always secondary to depicted feats.
Marcie and Malaya are both also probably pretty strong.
Guns would also be a contender but she ain’t in the comic so she doesn’t count.

On a sort of unrelated note…
It is nice to see Joyce and Jacob interact in what appear to be fairly good terms. (i.e. there does not seem to be any resentment from Jacob along the lines of “you wrecked my relationship and made things uncomfortable with my family”. Remember, the last time we saw Jacob and Joe interact he was complaining about the sit-com like shenanigans that had occurred between them.)
I wonder if he is aware of Joyce’s atheist leanings now. ((Not that I think he would mind much since he is pretty mature about his religion.)

As someone who was always the lift-ee: way too many. I’m a petite 4’11” and a half as an adult and when you’re tiny, people just…pick you up. All the time.
There’s something about being tiny that turns you into a human sword-in-the-stone where others feel compelled to prove their strength by seeing if they can lift you.
I’m married to someone who is 6’0” and our kid predictably takes after him (at only 8 she’s nearly the same height as me)…and this comic also reminds me of the last several times I attempted to lift her. Back when she was like…6.
It was definitely one of those “I have made a terrible mistake” scenarios.
So I guess I have been both Sarah and Joyce here.
How exactly is curling heavy dumbbells potentially dangerous?
You can overextend muscles and cause potential injury to your arms. Especially if you’re trying to bump up to a heavier set. Even going from a 10 to a 15lb set of dumbells can cause spasms simply due to your body thinking its barely any different from whst it’s used to.
Properly trained professionals will tell you to never start on heavy weights or a high number of exercises even if your body is in a decent shape. That’s one of the most common ways to tear or pull muscles. Start small and upgrade difficulty in increments tiol you figure out your limits.

Using heavy weighs without warming properly can of course lead to injury no matter the exercise.
I mean how is it you need a spotter for dumbbell curling, sure its useful to help get the weights into starting position but not really a requirement.
What is the danger aspect of curling, specifically, that you need a spotter is what I’m asking.
Could have just put Jacob on the bench and it would have made more sense.
