Hey no way am I giving you my friends – they are retrospect, a depleting resource. Heck, I even lost the one enemy I had – if that is the proper term for a secret and incredibly one-sided rivalry I had with this one classmate in college who seemed to just be better than me in everyway at everything I cared about. God, they were so nice and awesome, and I irrationally hated them so much for it.
People do that, I just held one specifically for people in my family’s circles that are queer or strong allies.
There’s a few of my kids’ friends that aren’t out to their parents, and I wanted to make sure they had someplace to be open about themselves.
Friendsgiving is already a big thing in, um, a certain subculture with a very high rate of being disowned by family (though others are more than welcome to celebrate!) and is beginning to spread and be its own thing. At least it is if the number of mentions of Friendsgiving I’ve seen on BSky this week is any indication.
It’s funny, United States is the only country that has the word “America” in its name, there’s no other place the adjective American applies to unless it’s specifically both the whole North and South American continents, yet everyone objects.
In many places, including places in Latin America, North and South America are thought of as one continent, so the word American is applied to mean something else quite easily.
yeah pretty much everywhere else USA folk are known as “staters”, we’re just about the only country in the Americas who tends to use “Americans” as our autonym XD
I know the controversy you’re talking about, but where I live we’ve said ‘the US’ for decades, I guess because it’s shorter? And because America sounds either weirdly patriotic (ie ‘god bless America’) or very dated, like “I’m going to go and make my way in the new world, America!”
@Axel
And Damn Right you should.
When we talk about Octoberfest we talk about ‘Germany’ not ‘Deutschland’ or “Alemania”.
And for God its “Jesus” not “Yehoshua”.
When speaking we speak… in the language we are speaking.
English speakers use 7 continents. Spanish speakers 6 (they combing NA and SA).
So this is the one time we Americans can say that these foreigners need to be less egocentric and considerate of other cultures and call us Americans.
.
Bonus: And you would think when speaking in Spanish that you would just call yourself “Estadunidense” but we bloody can’t because “The United States of Mexico” stole our name.
Unrelated: “Union of South American Nations” Boom.
@Amelie
Trick statement: the USA wasn’t a country with America in the name because it wasn’t a true country at the time. Much like the European Union or Union of South American Nations, it was just a weak Confederation.
That changed later obviously.
I don’t know why conservatives have a problem with this. My family has been doing Friendsgiving since 1984. The first year my brother went to college he had friends for whom home was too far away for a day trip or even a long weekend. We started a tradition of gathering strays for Thanksgiving dinner. Forty years later my family is still doing it. It’s always seemed to me to be the very specific spirit of the season.
@Bryon Orpheus No see, if you do found family/friends then everything will be far to pleasent and amicable. Thanksgiving is supposed to be tense and fraught with mandatory intergenerational angst. If you are having fun you are doing it wrong. That’s why I celebrate Turkey Day- Cheesy movies with Joel, Mike, Jonah, Emily and the bots.
I don’t even think of that as “Friendsgiving”– if it’s like a family & friends & maybe an older neighbor, that’s still just Thanksgiving to me. Friendsgiving I think of as where the majority of the relationships and the basis for gathering is friendship.
My family is also very open with inviting people. When I heard the other day that someone I know was going to be alone for Thanksgiving, it was honestly hard to stop myself from inviting them– even though this is not someone I would want there.
You don’t seem to be the only one in the comments misinterpreting. Here, I’ll provide a subtext-free translation, starting from panel 4:
Joe: I saved Joyce’s old drawings because I like her a lot.
Jocelyne: This information reveals that you like Joyce’s so much that I, Joyce’s sister, can embarrass you about it.
Joe: I am embarrassed by exposing this vulnerability but still like Joyce a lot.
I’d say the grimace is because he knows going against Joyce’s stated wishes is wrong, but has decided quietly stashing the drawings to give future-her a chance to take back the decision to get rid of them all is less wrong. It’s a loving action, and one that’s just paid off in letting him do something nice for Jocelyn, but it’s not without moral dissonance for a young man who really cares about respecting Joyce’s autonomy.
I think he glanced aside because he’s not used to showing prolonged romantic affection for people, and he’s just met Jocelyne, so he’s a little embarrassed to admit that he cares enough for Joyce to have saved what at the time he thought were her childhood drawings. “The art was valuable to me” was likely him trying to find a way to say it without feeling bashful.
The sad and ironic part is that Columbus Day was established in the first place to combat racism — specifically, anti-Italian racism that was especially common in the 1800s.
Italian Americans saw Columbus as one of their own, and sought him as a venue to inject their heritage into American (USA) History.
This is why I feel it’s so important to fight against bigotry in all of its forms. Because even if you somehow manage to get rid of “the minorities”, all that will happen is that the bigots will find a new target to hate, because the actual problems that plague them, things like economic disparity and a scarily fast-changing world threatening to leave them behind are big, insanely complex issues that won’t just magically disappear because the people you don’t like are gone. Instead, the problems will persist, and you’ll have to find a new target to blame all of your problems on. And if you’re one of the Tier 2 bigotry candidates like Italians, the Irish, non-mainstream Christian sects etc., guess who’s next in the firing line?
yee, bigotry is there to keep the social pyramid in tact by redirecting class resentment that would otherwise threaten it towards a scapegoat. witch hunters deployed by the bourgeois for this purpose must always be at the ready with a steady supply of witches. once they burn one, they go unto the next
THE STRUGGLE IS REAL, none of us are free until ALL of us are free
Way I read it, it wasn’t so much combating racism as allowing Italian-Americans to be considered “white” for the purpouse of having them on the same side against black people.
Yeah come to think of it, calling it “combating racism” is rather generous, was really more like “reforming racism”, given the big picture is basically bargaining with and thus still basically legitimizing systems which confer Power to whites.
I mean, it wasn’t “combating racism” in some abstract sense, but it also wasn’t really recruiting Italian-Americans to the white side. It was an attempt to combat very real prejudice against Italian-Americans.
Always struck me as silly – y’all want to celebrate your Italian heritage by honoring a Portuguesee sailor whose big expedition was under the Spanish flag. It’s almost as dumb as anarchists choosing as their role model a Catholic Royalist who wanted to destroy Parliament because he thought they took too much power away from the Crown.
Guy Fawkes and his iconic masks’ assocation with anarchists and anonymous ultimately comes from the 80s British graphic novel series V for Vendetta, in which he’s depicted as a vigilante who fights against fascism, having very little to do with the actual person who was if anything much more akin to a theocratic terrorist than anarchists as we know them today XD
My birthday is October 12th. I don’t know why they insist on calling the national holiday celebrating it after some genocidal asshole. I haven’t done even one genocide, to the best of my recollection.
I just use the day as my “make my awesome beer turkey and eat pie” day, I don’t give the tiniest shit about the pilgrims and curse the day my ancestors crossed the Atlantic.
Hold on to that art, Joe. Someday when Joyce is a world-famous cartoonist, us comics history fans will be *incredibly* grateful to get a glimpse at her early work.
In this context it’s like “you’re crushing on her so bad that you’re doing silly (gentle teasing) things like cherishing her childhood art”. You might also be down bad for someone if say… your favourite food was pepperoni pizza, and you’re known for never sharing your food, but if they asked for a slice you’d give it up no questions asked because you like them a lot and want to do things for them?
I like that Joe held onto some of Joyce’s old artwork for her. One of the things about growing up is when you get in that mood of wanting to shed everything from your old life or your childhood and sometimes it can lead to regrets. There are some toys I had gotten rid of that I’d love to see again, even if only one more time before I put it back into storage. Especially as I get older and I realize just how much memory can fade over time.
My mother saved one of my plushies from when I was 2-3 YO. For a military family in the 1960s that was a monumental task. We moved 23 times between When I was 3 and when I found Sylvester after Mom died.
That’s beautiful! And I’m sure a very bittersweet sort of discovery after your mom passed. After mine passed, I found where she had items stashed away for a Christmas she never wound up seeing. Majority of gifts were for her neighbor’s grandkids but I found a beautiful throw blanket specifically labeled with my name on it.
My significant others always keep the doodles and margin drawings that they find in my wake.
They can’t seem to throw the drawings away, even though I can always make more, and even though none of mine feature disciples. It’s very sweet of them.
Maybe Jocelyn’s apartment (small though I assume it to be) can fit the boxes? Then she can go through for any of her own stuff, and in a few months they can both ask ‘hey you still sure you want this to be recycled?’
Man idk if I can even imagine someone being THIS into me. Enough to squirrel away my childhood drawings? (I mean I already squirrel away my childhood drawings).
I just can’t… Make the shapes make sense. How?
but he literally just met her? It’s clear to me that Jocelyne is saying he’s down bad for Joyce for keeping all her art stuff, even if some of it turned out to be Joss’s. Do we really need to give him sister wives?
It’s a known fact that if you keep all someone’s art this is a sign you’re into them, regardless of whether you knew it was their art or have even met them.
Good. Maybe (after having her bit of fun) Jocelyne can help Joe and Joyce talk about what they want out of their relationship, and (I hope) converge on one they will both find satisfactory.
I have no idea why this bothers me, but it bothers me. Just because Joe is the brakes instead of the gas doesn’t mean they’re having issues with things that need some outside persona to deal with.
For as fucked as the both of them have been by happenstance, they’re doing fine.
This bothers me too, tbh. People have been weirdly alarmist about Joe/Joyce like it’s somehow a bad sign for the dude to want to take things slow and the chick to be eager to go fast.
She’s not pushing him, he’s not getting upset, they literally just had a mutually delightful sexual encounter. People need to chill.
I just LOVE how almost everything that has been talked about since Joss came out was about random things people talk about, and not at all about being trans. <3

hell how about we invent a new holiday called friendsgiving?
let’s do counter-culture for reals!!!! B)
I mean basically thanksgiving but more friend oriented instead of family oriented.
Ya know, as an alternative to people who want the joy of Thanksgiving without having to put up with racist uncles and toxic shit
People do that, I just held one specifically for people in my family’s circles that are queer or strong allies.
There’s a few of my kids’ friends that aren’t out to their parents, and I wanted to make sure they had someplace to be open about themselves.
We had about twenty guests, total. It was great!
Go ahead and do that. One of the things that Thanksgiving is for is socializing with the people you’re thankful for.
there’s a Leanne Rhimes song about that that’s funny as heck
where she lists this nice kind almost perfect girl and then goes and I hate her
Friendsgiving is already a big thing in, um, a certain subculture with a very high rate of being disowned by family (though others are more than welcome to celebrate!) and is beginning to spread and be its own thing. At least it is if the number of mentions of Friendsgiving I’ve seen on BSky this week is any indication.
Yep. Went to one yesterday for digital nomads. We brought potatoes and a baby.
Huh, I thought I was replying to a comment that said Friendsgiving has already joined the mainstream.
Friends for all, even if your family is basically fine and dandy. Pal-entine’s Day, but with more cooking.
How long do you cook your baby? j/k
Slowly warmed for about nine months
Little bun in the oven.
Sous vide, you say?
Ordering from the kids menu.
Just to seal in how mainstream it already is,
Friendsgiving has a Wikipedia article.

yeah pretty much everywhere else USA folk are known as “staters”, we’re just about the only country in the Americas who tends to use “Americans” as our autonym XD
Or ”jenkit” over here, as the plural for Americans (US). It’s neutral in tone here, I’d say.
We just call people from the usa americans (or the more derogatory ‘yanks’ or ‘seppos’) here, have honestly never heard the word ‘stater’ before
I know the controversy you’re talking about, but where I live we’ve said ‘the US’ for decades, I guess because it’s shorter? And because America sounds either weirdly patriotic (ie ‘god bless America’) or very dated, like “I’m going to go and make my way in the new world, America!”
We do still use ‘american’ though

Choosing to do Friendsgiving instead of spending Thanksgiving listening to them takes away their captive audience.
yeah, the less opportunity bigot relatives have to fuel their superiority complex the better
Spanksgiving sounds like a pretty kinky version of Thanksgiving where someone gets tied up like a turkey.

Hello, Carol…
Wait, our Canadian friends missed Spanksgiving in mid-October and I missed it?

This is how Joe and Jocelyne hook up.
Nooooo!!
(I think this is a joke. but still. no no no.)
Awwww
Came here to say this
Thirded
Fourth’d
Honestly, Joyce is pretty much one of the best thing that happened to Joe. i kind of liked his character before but now he’s just *chef’s kiss*
Oh damn he IS down bad, he’s being emotionally honest to her older sister
+1! Honesty from Joe is like having LN2 poured over your head, brisk!
Super cute, though now I am just picturing a very confused Danny and/or Sal finding that.
I’m not sure how to interpret panels 4 and 5.
I hope I’m misinterpreting.
What’s the interpretation you’re getting from it? No judgement, just genuinely curious.
Just something triggering. Sorry, I’ve been seeing triggers a lot in the comic recently. It’s just a little too close to the nerve these days.
Sorry, sorry — Joe’s words are just confusing to me.
Nevermind.
I understand! Sorry that that has happened and I hope you will have a better night going forward!
Thank you, Doopyboop!
You’re welcome!
How are you interpreting it?
Seems like pretty standard ribbing to me? She has a lot of brothers after all
Assuming you mean panels 5 and 6, since 4 and 5 don’t really have anything that seems that misinterpretible
You are. Most of what he stashed is Joyce’s art. Only a small bit was Joycelyn’s.
I was confused, but in my case it’s because I didn’t know what down bad meant. So I came to read the comments, to see what it did mean.
Thank you, Dr. Sharks! That helps a lot!
The way he looked aside and grimaced and paused before saying “value” — I didn’t really understand what he meant by that.
Thanks so much for helping me to understand.
Oh, yes, that makes sense, Nobby Nobbs! Thank you for that deeper nuance!
Ooh, also a good take yeah
I think he glanced aside because he’s not used to showing prolonged romantic affection for people, and he’s just met Jocelyne, so he’s a little embarrassed to admit that he cares enough for Joyce to have saved what at the time he thought were her childhood drawings. “The art was valuable to me” was likely him trying to find a way to say it without feeling bashful.
Oh, …see, that makes SO much more sense! Thank you, Lee!
*Whew!* I am NOT the best judge of facial expressions! 8-|
This is much clearer. Thank you.
“You’ve really fallen for her, haven’t you?”
“Nnnooooo…..yes.”
Jocelyn’s knowing smirk. Love her.
Yes, yes he is and I’m loving it.
He’s so down bad he’s going off-model

I do that on what used to be Columbus Day.
That does sound like a more productive use of Fuck That Guy Day.
I think that’s what he’s been getting at LOL XD
Honestly why I kept one of the drawings from one of my 5th graders last year.
In 20 years she’ll go through the bins Joe saved and post scans of her early Julia prototypes on Zoomr.
Bad</i?? Our boy Joe is down abysmal.
He’s so down bad and I hope this makes him feel good about himself.
Am I the only one confused about what “down bad” means as an adjective?
in this context basically “hopelessly in love” but can also be in a lustful way
Lovesick, maybe?
I think it means “you’ve got it bad” to people young enough to wear braces.
This year, I am thankful for you – Jeremy… You asked the question so I wouldn’t feel so old by asking it. Thank you.
Elder millennials, ever at your service.
I see SOME people haven’t watched the “Stacy’s dad” song (legit where I know this phrasing from)
Jocelyn can see through the bullshitting, it’s her older sister power.
Unrelated to the strip itself, but I just wanted to say I’m sorry for your loss.
Aw, yeah, losing a pet sucks. I love calicos (one of mine came over to demand pets as I was typing this.)
I’m sure you gave her a good life.
oh noes, Miss Sasaki
The heartbreak is the price we pay for the years of love.
oh joe, you dummy. shes gonna tell this story at your wedding
That is lovely, Opus and Doopyboop. Thank you for sharing these sweet and sad stories.
Seconded.
Jocelyn saw Joe look away and mutter “it…it has value” and she went ohhhhhhhh. I see what this is.
Man idk if I can even imagine someone being THIS into me. Enough to squirrel away my childhood drawings? (I mean I already squirrel away my childhood drawings).
I just can’t… Make the shapes make sense. How?
wait…?
oh no…
Is Joe “down bad” with Joyce… or Jocelyne???
This can be a very awwwww moment, or one very bad drama beginning…
And everything was going so good for once.
ffffffff
Joyce. He’s down bad for Joyce.
And maybe her sister.
We need plot for more 10 years
Why does everyone think he’s down bad for her sister??
Because she’s so Joyce like but TALLER.
but he literally just met her? It’s clear to me that Jocelyne is saying he’s down bad for Joyce for keeping all her art stuff, even if some of it turned out to be Joss’s. Do we really need to give him sister wives?
It’s a known fact that if you keep all someone’s art this is a sign you’re into them, regardless of whether you knew it was their art or have even met them.
Jocelyne is Timon in The Lion King:
I can see what’s happening….
Timon recognizes that Nala and Simba are in love. He does not see Simba’s love for Nala and go “
aha, you love me”
You and I saw very different versions of that movie.
Well I wasn’t going to go into the social and uh, feisty dynamic of real lions here
Joe’s eye is emigrating.
Joe is trying so hard to be good, and he’s succeeding.
I don’t care what some people say, having representation of trans charactrers makes me so damn happy. ~<3
Anyone who is against that is an asshole and their opinion is irrelevant.
Some people can fuck right off. Trans characters are awesome and we deserve rep.
Jocelyne supporting her sister by supporting her boyfriend who likes her a lot
if this ship doesn’t go the distance I’d be absolutely gutted
I don’t know anything in DoA that can threat this ship.
Welp, TIL what down bad means, a few years after the coining.
Let me know if I start sounding like QC’s Aurelia (whom I am somewhat older than) and I’ll stick to my raccoon coat and Stutz Bearcat.
to be fair, Aurelia owns it and is gloriously beautiful. ~<3
I assume it comes from falling hard? You’re falling hard for them. You’re down bad. Maybe?
“Got it bad” has been around for a long time. (Based on Disney’s Hercules, a factually accurate source, they even said it in ancient Greece!)
Hey, “I Got it Bad and That Ain’t Good” is a jazz standard from 1941. Now you’re speaking my language!
Joe, I know you love Joyce, but if I had to kept all my old draws, or other things, I would barely have space to sleep.
Awww, I think Joe _like_ likes Joyce.
Juste a little bit
Barring Dotty potentially fucking things up.
Maybe Jocelyne can take that grenade though.
Big sis approve! The future life as a couple of Joyce and Joe is more and more strong.
I’m glad Taylor Swift just did a song with this title or I’d have no idea what it meant. Dang young people and their slang, getting on my lawn.
That’s? So cute?
I just LOVE how almost everything that has been talked about since Joss came out was about random things people talk about, and not at all about being trans. <3
Maybe im in an online bubble,
But I feel Being Trans have been normalized since Jocelyne first came out to Ethan, and Now.
( i know society has become reactionary, but its a lot less taboo. )
