I dunno if she ever made it clear to Danny that things would be temporary. Saying “Joe knew” also isn’t an indication, since he could’ve just seen the signs that she was starting to want something (or someone) different. My guess is that she never flat-out stated it until she broke up with Danny, but that she hinted it might not be permanent and he was just too focused on his future with her to get the hints.

It’s not a thing in my mind, though I can’t speak for anyone else. Just because she said it early on doesn’t mean it’s not her way of rationalizing the idea of dating someone to assuage her own feelings.

I’m not saying relationships can’t have an indeterminate clock on them from the start, I’m just saying there is a difference between dating someone and knowing that you’ll break up at some point in the future due to circumstances, and dating someone to feel better and conveniently having a reason to back out later.

We are also discussing psychology of a character. While what is being presented to us shows us classic signs of denial and just means to an end mentality, there is the potential she has looked at it all as a way to get her release she needs from stress in the form of a person, rather than a toy. Though it is less common, this is a possibility, and shows cold rationalization not dissimilar to Brennan from Bones.

She may get to a point where she would rather stay with Walky because she has developed deeper feelings is another story. This is a topic for another time, as currently there are no signs of such a mentality present at this time.

What I don’t understand is why it has to have a planned end at all, whether that is “leaving for Yale” or “marriage”. Why not just see where it goes? They both presumably _live_ in Indiana, so it’s not like they wouldn’t be able to see each other during the summer. Which, you know, kind of applies to Danny too, but Danny was kind of a clingy jerk.

At the risk of intruding on other’s conversation or misconstruing intent, I think the two camps are arguing on different planes. Willis is arguing Dotty isn’t acting in bad faith, and stated numerous times this is for fun; prior commenters are arguing this relationship is on a core level not serious. Not “truwe lub,” so to speak. A rebound. No Strings Attached. Some other movie reference. The problem here is that there isn’t a problem. Walky is clearly more attached, but he knows the score. But that doesn’t mean he isn’t a rebound, and its perfectly possible for both parties to know they’ve constructed a rebound and not have somebody be General break-hearter. Everyone’s cool here, unless Walky let’s himself get too attached. Which may have already happened, honestly, but hey.

Why can’t someone have everything? Also, what is a bigger priority than marriage? Is there really some objective standard? Is being president really ‘bigger’ than marrying the person you love?

As a woman who refused–despite serious social pressures–to give up her dreams when she got married, I don’t think your language is terribly egalitarian. Being president isn’t ‘bigger things.’ There isn’t an objective ‘career’ standard that makes some careers more valuable than others. And it’s possible to have both.

If an individual decides for themselves that being President is more important than who or if they marry, then, yes, that is “bigger” than marrying the person he or she loves. Who are you to tell them it’s not?

                @Willis

Okay, I guess the difference is that in my experience/observations, dating someone immediately after someone else never works out. Usually it results in dating someone you wouldn’t otherwise, or screwing things up because your mindset hasn’t entirely switched over from one person to the other. Hence why my head-canon suggests it’s a rebound.

I’m not trying to suggest that she doesn’t intend to or shouldn’t go to Yale given the choice. What I am saying is that the rationalization is that, since the relationship had a clock on it from the beginning, if she ended up realizing she doesn’t like or just doesn’t want to date Walky at all, it would make it easier to break up with him.

Well I think Plasma was prolly being facetious, but even though I agree with you, seems like a rebound to me. I mean, I don’t think anybody can walk away from a long term relationship like that without some resentment, and Dorothy was clearly pretty pissed when she and Danny split.

According to my book at least, the rebound is the one you date for a while after you get out of a serious relationship, the issue of if both parties knew it going into the rebound relationship or not, Walky/Dotty fits my definition pretty well.

I’m guessing that Willis’ definition of rebound varies in some way and from his viewpoint, Walky/Dotty doesn’t fit within his parameters of the term rebound.

Generally, and this is from my perspective, rebound guys are defined as rather short flings, lasting from a night, to at most a few months. This does not fit that. Different for everyone though.

Keep in mind: for us it has been years. For them it has been weeks.

But you’re right that this isn’t a fling. For Dorothy, at least, it’s calculated. Preplanned and scheduled, and all that good romantic stuff.

When someone’s “on the rebound,” the person they are dating is an emotional crutch to help them get over a bad breakup that’s hurting them. (Hence the name — it’s what you go through before “bouncing back.”) Such relationships being short and doomed is an effect of being on the rebound and not the nature of the relationship itself.

As the person who broke up with Danny (after obviously being quite over him for some time), it’s pretty hard to swallow that Dorothy is on the rebound. Danny and Amber, I could maybe buy, but not Dorothy and Walky.

Sometimes we can say bad things without realizing it just because it’s been programmed into us, not because we believe the implications of what we’re saying. That you were primarily worried you were saying bad things over being concerned with being “called out” puts you in the category of good human beings.

Hell, most of the time I’m not even in that category, so you have my respect.

Hoodies are good, but maybe another shirt in the closet that is not one…just to be different? Hung up over the real shoes.
Dorothy has never ever let any guy (in this universe) think it’s permanent, as far as I can remember. She made it pretty clear to Danny that he had followed her to school and that she knew he had no clear plans to continue his education further that that school, and she did. Period end of story.
She just told Walky same thing-more or less, and he accepts it because he dosn’t want permanent either.
So, Walky, get another shirt and real shoes, it’ll be a growing experience for you. And make her feel better too.

Two people can enter a relationship expecting it to be temporary, but it’s entirely possible and likely common that at least of them is hoping for more. Being reminded of it directly like that kind of hurts given Walky actually likes her. I mean, he threw his toy at her. That’s love.

That is what Dorothy’s trying to do. What I’m curious about is whether or not Walky will heed her words. I’m on the fence as to whether he will or not. Dorothy is handling that the best she can, making sure she’s vocal, but it may still end badly. Can’t really blame Dotty on that because she was honest and up front about it, BUT… if it’s clear that Walky still isn’t listening, I hope she ends it sooner rather than later. If it’s not ’til later and she throws up “well, you knew what this was,” the reminders won’t mean much. Someone that smart ought to know better. It’s still possible to be technically right all the way through something and yet still be wrong/feel bad. Or *thought* of as wrong anyway. It sometimes sucks to be the person more on the ball in these things. I’m not banking on Walky to take it well, but we’ll see.

Walky will thank her dragging him out for new clothes that make him look nice when it gets him more ladies, though. I remember being that resistant to such things back when I was his age. Every girl’s crazy for a sharp-dressed man, after all. ::guitar riff::

    “Stop trying to change him”

Jesus, she’s making a suggestion about getting clothes, not threatening to withhold sex until he does or telling him everything about him is wrong.

    • begbert2
      begbert2
      January 22, 2013 at 10:59 am | #

Just everything he *wears* is wrong. And “better than I found it” makes it about him, not the clothes. He, the person, is her fixer-upper.

And she *has* threatened to withhold sex from him – or rather the slightly less evil ploy, break up with him, unless he conformed to her Ken doll. At that point he did what I consider the right thing: tell her forget it.

IMHO, he should do the same thing here. “Dot, I don’t want to have to put up a costume to get a girl; I want somewhat who likes me. So you can waste our time buying this stuff, but I’ll leave the bags in your room. Now can we get back to the shoes? They’re why we’re actually here, you know. And when considering between laces and velcro, ask yourself how they’ll look perpetually untied.”

        Campsite Rule.

        Google it.

It also applies to relationships in which there is a difference in experience. Dotty has a good deal more experience than Walky. Wanting to leave him with a better chance of keeping company beyond his own right hand when she is gone is considerate and thoughtful.

(generic) You are not a special special snowflake. You are not perfect just the way you are. Your farts don’t smell like Chanel No. 5. And anyone who has led you to believe that any of this is the case has done you a tremendous disservice. We can all be better people. Each of us has tons of room for improvement. And those of us who are adults recognize this and rely on our partners to help us continue to grow rather than demanding that they encourage us to stagnate.

Additionally, all of this nonsense about your clothes being who you are is just silly. Sure, he likes to wear sweatshirts. And that’s okay. But the clothes she is picking out for him appeal to her. So why is it okay for a man to expect his partner to dress in a way that he finds enticing (see the lingerie business for proof of concept) but it’s unconscionable for a woman to have similar expectations?

There’s also the matter of his DEMONSTRATED fear of growing up. Also he has those insecurity issues, so how could dotty call herself a friend if she doesn’t try to show him his faults? Of coarse, she could just be shallow and I way off base.

But with regards to her leaving him over the pajama jeans; he also left HER over said jeans. He was herting her socially and knew it. He left her for expecting ANYTHING from him. That was selfishness on his part.

Okay, Dorothy this is not cool. I do not think it is good of you to be picking out clothes for Walkie and subtlety insulting him when you are not serious about him. OKay I get it you want him to grow up and look decent and not make you look bad in public by being an immature childish slob. And your intentions of helping him see that adulthood and cleaning up will not make him a boring granddad. But this smacks a bit of controlling. The way you said “I might have you try on some nicer shirts.” The “I always leave things better than I found them.” Maybe it’s just the youth of the characters. I think she could have been more tactful.

“Hey, Walky. Why don’t you try on this shirt for me. I think it’s nice. Do you like it? I bet the next girl you find when I go to Yale will think you’re hot in it.” Or maybe “I bet lots of girls will be after you if you wore this when I go to Yale.”

It's not a new argument, of course, but Chesterton dismissed it effectively in 1908. "You will hear everlastingly... this argument that the rich man cannot be bribed. The fact is, of course, that the rich man is bribed; he has been bribed already. That is why he is a rich man."

Who can forget the Swiss-Austrian Union, or its famous capital - Istanbul.
AI generated ad by a company called Travello showing the 10 most visited cities in Europe, except the cities are hilariously poorly placed. London is in Wales, Paris is in Ireland, Rome is in France, Rom (yes like Rome but without an E) is in Spain, Barcelona is in Morocco, Prague is in Germany, Vienna is in Italy, Istanbul is in Austria, Milan is in Libya, and Antalya is correctly shown as in Turkey but is in the wrong place. Also a few of the borders like Switzerland and Austria or Hungary and Slovenia are missing.

wilbur, savvy enough to know he's in a comic strip but still not a great actor, awkwardly lifts a muffin up into frame so that we, the audience, understand that he has a muffin right now, which is very important narratively, but he's not really selling it well as an organic, human action

Check out those stickers. They make him look pretty great, actually. That aircraft carrier mode shines. Tidal Wave is loose and incomplete! So there's only four (4) jets!
