No, CianM is right. Its the one were Jack and Aku decide to have a duel where Jack won’t use his magic sword and Aku won’t use magic or any of his minions. Of course Aku cheats, but Jack was expecting that.
To be fair, if she didn’t already know, the next few strips would have been hilariously awkward. Well, they’ll still be hilariously awkward, but not in the same way.
Joyce has been told about several times now, the only reason she finally went “Oh my geez, he’s gay” this time was because her ‘boyfriend’ actually told her himself.
Yeah, that was a pretty dick move on Sarah’s par–ahhh, screw it. I’ve bongoed about Sarah in previous strips enough. I’ll just put another tally mark in the appropriate column and just express future >:( at Sarah there. It gets too tiring otherwise.
Given Joyce’s demonstrated capacity for repression and denial, I suspect Sarah thought Joyce would manage to still not know even after being told directly.
You’re forgetting about the 5 year time jump David throws in after this school year ends! Joyce & Joe are married while most of the characters fade into the background while David introduces new characters to take the lead.
The really funny part is that I just did the actual rough estimate and it came out at a little over 40 years, maybe about 45 (and, yes, I know he’s only doing Freshman year). Assuming he does it in the same detail he has been, this comic already depends on Willis living to a ripe old age.
It’s kind of crazy when you think of it like that. I went back to the first strip the other day to see how much the art style has changed and it’s kind of ridiculous to see how much has happened with only a few weeks passing.
It’s also a clever way to have the status quo maintain for long periods even when character development in strip time is at a breakneck pace (which is pretty realistic for the first weeks away at college).
How do current mortality rates fit in for this age group when compressed by 50 years? Basically we should be seeing many of the characters dying off well before finals.
Well, considering DoA doesn’t take place in any specific year, that wouldn’t work at all. If I say it’s September the fifth, for example, and we know it’s a certain day of the week, that kind of makes it one year or another.
As nice as an open relationship would be, I suspect Joyce and Ethan would be uncomfortable with non-monogamy.
Something about that couple doesn’t really scream “I have overcome traditional ideas about sexual morality!” Can’t put my finger on what it is, though…
I tried it once, but I ended up in a bad stage musical that included an incestuous Star Wars dream sequence set to “Believe It Or Not” from The Greatest American Hero.
And because you’ll never believe that’s a thing that exists… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wk9pnsU5ilE
It was a random performance but that was the best video I could find of it on Youtube. That’s an actual thing in the script.
Forget Zoobille Zoo! I now have the Greatest American Hero Theme earworm. Personally, I call that a WIN.
Believe it or not
I’m walking on air
I never thought I could feel so free-ee-ee
Flyin’ away on a wing and a prayer
Who… could… it be?
Believe it or not, it’s just meeee
Yeah, of all the songs they could’ve set an incestuous Star Wars dream sequence to, that was definitely one of the more awesome choices. Albeit a pretty bizarre one.
My current earworm is Prokofiev’s Arise, Ye Russian People from Alexander Nevsky, which has the unfortunate side effect of making me want to run out and slaughter Germans.
So Joyce’s homeschooled friend, with very likely the same amount of worldly wisdom and sophistication as Joyce herself, is going to advise Joyce on this rather tricky relationship boondoggle?
Yeah, right.
That conversation would be worth overhearing.
According to their preacher, Joyce is the well-adjusted one, hence she was trusted with going to a big state school full of sinners. Becky is the one who couldn’t handle a secular university.
Does this mean, she was the only one indoctrinated enough that her preacher was sure that the ‘sinners’ wouldn’t be able to ‘corrupt’ her, or does this mean she was the one the least intense about her indoctrination and hence able to get along with the least suspicion?
The thing to understand about religion is it rarely works like a cult since religious leaders usually believe it, removing a lot of the “sinster manipulation” aspect–even in fundamentalists.
I think if we arbitrarily decide that a cult can’t be a cult if its leader buys into his/her own delusion, then there are a hell of a lot of cults that aren’t cults. If David Koresh didn’t buy into his own press, I’m pretty sure he’d have been waving a white flag in about 30 seconds once the FBI surrounded his compound. And I think we can agree he was a cult leader, yes?
If you’re going to forgo the standard definition of a cult (“Any religion I [the speaker] don’t belong to”), then you’re unlikely to find a consensus as to the definition. Personally I think there are several factors to look at: the degree to which the religion tries to separate their members from outsiders, the degree to which it tries to control and manipulate information, and the degree to which it idolizes its past and present mortal leaders. It’s tempting to also include how focused it is on money, but that really only indicates corruption, rather than cult status specifically.
First Joyce goes and dates a guy almost immediately upon entering college. Then she reveals that he’s a Jewish guy. Now Joyce tells her that she’s dating a GAY Jewish guy.
She’s fully expecting the next call to be “Good news, he’s not Jewish after all; he’s satanic!”
Then Becky will contact her youth pastor and a few of Joyce’s other friends and an intervention will be staged. Whereupon the sinner will be brought back into the fold, and IU burned to the ground.
Unfortunately, burning the university down invokes the final mass sacrifice necessary to bring the Lord Satan to the mortal realm upon which time he will take Joyce (and Ethan) as his mate(s) and use their anti-christ spawn to finally over throw God. And everyboddy will be forced to wear sweater vets and be lesbians.
I… I… I honestly can’t tell if that Dark Dungeons thing is supposed to be anti-RPG, or anti-Chick. I mean, I’m leaning towards the latter, because of, well, tons of reasons from his video, but on the other hand… seriously?
I can imagine a continuation of the punchline with Dina. It’s not dirty or anything like that, I just won’t say it, since I now fear my posts being randomly deleted.
Though I’m curious as to why I’m even bothering with this then. Oh well, hope and hope, I guess.
My post on yesterday’s comic appears to have disappeared as well, and I’m almost certain I didn’t break any rule. Supposing that you also didn’t break a rule, it could have been a site error. Or maybe David was just in a bad mood and decided to randomly delete a bunch of comments.
I picked it out. I’ve been making a new grav for every strip I post on for a while now, with source material from the strip. It helps to suppress my urge to link to completely pointless image manipulations in the comment section.
The comic just moved to a new server, and things behind the scenes may be lagging a bit in getting pointed at the new site. Probably you posted your comment on the old server after the switchover, and your browser has since gotten straightened out and found the new server, which never had the comment you left on the old one.
Probably not. I think Willis would have to manually transfer over any comments posted on the old site after the switchover, and it seems unlikely that he’d bother.
David, your “fan service” is impeccable, if not a bit too graphic for some perhaps…some of your readers might explode before their time…also, future sexuologists will have a hard time explaining fetishes with sweater vests in certain age/interest groups…
Question: Am I a bad person for reading this while attending Purdue? lol.
Well technically I’m studying abroad in England right now…anyway I discovered this through questionable content and now I feel weird never having heard about it at home.
Joyce’s logic never fails to impress.
I love you, you love me, we’re a happy family!
(You’re welcome, DOAers)
Alternatively:
I love you, you love men, we’re a happy comedy!
Comendy.
I know about it too!
I know it, and you know it, but do you know I know you know I know it?
Wait… are we sure *HE* knows about it?
Reminds me of that one episode of Samurai Jack.
I feel like I should know this one… it involved the Scotsman, right?
I believe it was the episode where Jack and Aku fought man-to-man out in the desert, or man-to-demon.
I seem to remember that was virtually every episode.
Jump Good
Was it the one with the “wish granting” worm?
No, CianM is right. Its the one were Jack and Aku decide to have a duel where Jack won’t use his magic sword and Aku won’t use magic or any of his minions. Of course Aku cheats, but Jack was expecting that.
Wait, what were we talking about?
I am getting Friends flashbacks from this comment.
This strip is all kinds of awesome.
You didn’t think Joyce knew and THAT’S how you would’ve broken it to her, Sarah?
Yeah, that was my reaction, too.
To be fair, if she didn’t already know, the next few strips would have been hilariously awkward. Well, they’ll still be hilariously awkward, but not in the same way.
My guess would’ve been truth veiled as sarcasm
Joyce has been told about several times now, the only reason she finally went “Oh my geez, he’s gay” this time was because her ‘boyfriend’ actually told her himself.
Yotomoe is surprised because it has been established in canon that Sarah is known for her tact.
I would’ve danced around it but apparently Sarah is a direct type of person.
It’s difficult to dance around things after Sarah’s taken a bat to your knee.
It’s not really unwittingly then, is it?
Wittingly, really.
Or un-unwittingly.
Unwittingly my wit fails to make me wittingly wit.
Wait, why does Joyce have a band-aid on her arm?
She got a flu shot. Last week for us, ten minutes ago for her.
So Dumbing of Age moves at roughly 0.09921% real time. At that speed this comic will be finished in over 750 years.
Oh, scratch that! More like 50 years. Not even a week of content per year.
So far we’ve got a little over a week a year, on my last count today should be Thursday week three, but DoA is only 2.5 years old.
Not that that is much better, epically when we skipped three days of it waiting for some Pajama Jeans. xD
Nope. DoA will be Walky’s tribute to Simon Furman.
Why?
Because IT NEVER (will) END!
Pretty clever of Willis to ensure he has work until he retires, or dies, whichever comes first.
That being said, I have given up worrying about the timeline and just enjoy the comics.
How do current mortality rates fit in for this age group when compressed by 50 years? Basically we should be seeing many of the characters dying off well before finals.
I’d love to have “In-universe Date and Time” added above the tags on each comic, so we can really keep track of how long it’s been
Well, considering DoA doesn’t take place in any specific year, that wouldn’t work at all. If I say it’s September the fifth, for example, and we know it’s a certain day of the week, that kind of makes it one year or another.
How about tracking time by the in-universe college schedule?
So the first strip would be tagged S1W1, which would stand for “semester 1, week 1.”
But he doesn’t really want to keep track of time like that.
Yeah, I’m not really sure it really matters. Stuff happens when it happens. Would it make a difference at all if this were week 5 or week 7?
Be like Andrew Hussie and do a ton of acts and intermissions. It probably won’t be incredibly confusing.
It could matter.
Lies!
AKA “an open secret” (waiting to become “an open relationship”?)
Which will lead to an open day.
As nice as an open relationship would be, I suspect Joyce and Ethan would be uncomfortable with non-monogamy.
Something about that couple doesn’t really scream “I have overcome traditional ideas about sexual morality!” Can’t put my finger on what it is, though…
Because Joyce won’t let strangers touch her.
You’re right, in other words — though it’s tempting to imagine…
Somehow, I think this would work. I don’t know why I thought of it.
I like Joyce’s collar turned up like that. Not entirely sure why, but it looks cute.
Good…let the 80s flow through you…
Good, I like the 80’s.
I tried it once, but I ended up in a bad stage musical that included an incestuous Star Wars dream sequence set to “Believe It Or Not” from The Greatest American Hero.
And because you’ll never believe that’s a thing that exists…

Yeah, of all the songs they could’ve set an incestuous Star Wars dream sequence to, that was definitely one of the more awesome choices. Albeit a pretty bizarre one.
Greatest American Hero needs a reboot!
Or DC/WB could get off their collected asses and DO SOMETHING along the same lines but with Billy Batson/Captain Marvel.
Hell since Marvel owns Malibu comics they could do a Prime series.
But there’s just as much a chance of those happening as seeing a return of Amalgam Comics on a regular basis.
My current earworm is Prokofiev’s Arise, Ye Russian People from Alexander Nevsky, which has the unfortunate side effect of making me want to run out and slaughter Germans.
I thought you were joking. I can’t believe that it’s really real.
What makes this even better is that William Katt auditioned for the role of Luke. (You can find that on Youtube as well.)
So Joyce’s homeschooled friend, with very likely the same amount of worldly wisdom and sophistication as Joyce herself, is going to advise Joyce on this rather tricky relationship boondoggle?
Yeah, right.
That conversation would be worth overhearing.
It’s like a trainwreck, it’s horrible but you can’t look away from it.
actually didn’t Joyce say at some point that she was the most well adjusted of their group or something like that?
According to their preacher, Joyce is the well-adjusted one, hence she was trusted with going to a big state school full of sinners. Becky is the one who couldn’t handle a secular university.
Does this mean, she was the only one indoctrinated enough that her preacher was sure that the ‘sinners’ wouldn’t be able to ‘corrupt’ her, or does this mean she was the one the least intense about her indoctrination and hence able to get along with the least suspicion?

It was like the second or third thing she said to Sara
This will end well.
For US.
I can’t imagine how Becky will react.
Becky’s head will explode when Joyce tells her.
Or worse. “Good news, I’m pregnant with the Anti-Christ” or something like that.
I feel like it’s Becky who’s going to be the pregnant one
No better yet. “Turns out I’m not dating a gay Jewish guy at all!”
Re: Turns out I’m not dating a gay Jewish guy at all!”
…”I’m dating a gay Jewish woman!”
Not only that but I’ve found a really nice coven to join!
And all because they played D&D.
Uhm…I played Battletech so I’m excused from the downfall of humanity right?
Exactly! And there are people working to get out the word on how dangerous D&D is. Notably someone is fundraising to make “Dark Dungeons” into a movie. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/295102457/rpgs-are-evil-dark-dungeons-the-movie
I… I… I honestly can’t tell if that Dark Dungeons thing is supposed to be anti-RPG, or anti-Chick. I mean, I’m leaning towards the latter, because of, well, tons of reasons from his video, but on the other hand… seriously?

That’s way beyond my skillset, whether I could bother or not. I can’t even reach the old site, nor could I post comments that are not mine if I could.
* cue Dramatic Chipmunk
Dun dun DUNNNNN!
Cue Dramatic Thunder.
Actually, is there anyone who DOESN’T know?
… Maaaaaybe Joe? I don’t think they’ve interacted with each other yet.
Danny, but is that really a surprise?
Jacob? Penny? Naaa I doubt it.
Also, mmm, sweater vest porn.
Dat vest.
I’m gonna have to delete my history.
NO! If you delete your history, you will be deleting your present self (according to most fictional time-travel rules)!
… Oh, you meant browser history. Carry on.
(This is a transcription of my thought process upon reading your comment. I did get the joke as well, though. Afterwards.)
No wonder Becky’s not picking up, Joyce, your phone appears to be turned off.
This can only end in tears.
Tears of laughter, and joy, and disillusioned self-hatred.
Wait, you know about that?
Wait, you know about that?
Wait, you know about that?
Ignore me, just being silly.
The comma messes with it, allowing for an extra emphasis after it.
Thank you, I’m glad somebody did that.
I really hope that something good comes out of this before Joyce gets pregnant “Saved” style
Are knowing and understanding still two diffrent things? Otherwise I am lost and need more to drink.
Knowing is half the battle. Understanding is usually off in a bar getting sloshed.
And now she’s wittingly courting a gay guy. Hm.
man, these two are PRICELESS together!
After rereading this comic from start to now. I am even more disapointed in my freshmen year.
Oh snap, panel 1 is Joyce’s equivalent of flashing.
David, your “fan service” is impeccable, if not a bit too graphic for some perhaps…some of your readers might explode before their time…also, future sexuologists will have a hard time explaining fetishes with sweater vests in certain age/interest groups…
Hell, I’m having difficulty explaining it now…
She’s putting up a brave face, but you can tell Sarah’s disappointed that her sudden reveal didn’t totally devastate Joyce.
Dotty doesn’t know.
At first I was like “what it’s not updating at midnight even though Willis moved to a new server?!” but then I was like “oh it’s Saturday”
wait…..what!?
The flu shot band-aids confused me for a moment…
Question: Am I a bad person for reading this while attending Purdue? lol.
