Hey thebombzen, you and I should start a club, I’m quite fond of Danny myself and have never understood why so many people are anti-Danny. He’s kinda sweet and clueless and tries to be a good person – I like that in a character!

I kinda like him too? Like, he does seem to be actually well intentioned and so on… just sort of incompetent. Compare to Roz or Mary, both of whom seem to enjoy standing in judgement over others. Becky is… deeply vulnerable. Both Becky and Joyce are faced with a pair of major transformations – in their best friend, and in themselves. That’s hard!

That happens a lot with Danny, I’ve noticed. Most of his “Danning it up” moments come from him having an incomplete picture, pieced with him being in the wrong place at the wrong time (see: the entire Blaine arc). Which is frustrating for us, who see this world in various snippets from different perspectives.

I think we don’t much about Mike relative to SP-Mike. I THINK that he said, in front of Ethan, that he and Amber did after Ethan and Amber’s Prom Night Debacle, when the 3 of them were sitting at a picnic table. He twice started to say something that ignited Amber, who didn’t want him to talk about whatever it was, at least in front of Ethan. I’d be interested to know how someone else interprets that.

I read that as Amber trying to keep him from throwing the Prom Night Debacle in Ethan’s face again and again. He wasn’t about to reveal something new, just bringing up the prom night in every sentence.

Yeah, it was a pretty exhaustive summary. If Becky had added “By the way, I’m rad” I think we would have got everything.

Makes me wonder, how big is Willis’ buffer again? When will we start seeing strips drawn after the Becky-backlash happened in the comments?

Also they’re cutting her some slack because her life is in shambles and she’s holding onto Joyce’s good nature for support.

And, Danny can totally find her obnoxious. She barges in, talks about something completely inane, barely registers Danny’s presence, and then quickly runs out. It’s not like they had an engrossing chat over brunch.

Right, and she burst in during what was an intensely private conversation to boot. Danny has no way of knowing her personal situation. We’ll see if he remembers Dorothy’s warning in future interactions or if the slack will remain uncut by him.

Becky leaned into the room and said “Thank god this is the right room” (or something close) and then Dorothy said “Becky, get in here” and proceeded to ask her about Becky’s place on the Kinsey scale. Dorothy could easily have said, “Hey, Becky, we’re in the middle of a private convo. Come back in a few minutes?”

Formalin (formaldehyde in water) is a popular fixative. And fun fact: pure ethanol is often used as a light fixative – it kills almost everything. And humans drink the stuff.

That might be an advantage here for once. She’s really unlikely to break with Danny over him coming out and his interest in Ethan (that would be letting go) and she’s never given up on her friendship with Ethan no matter how frustrating she’s found his behavior with Joyce (which would also be letting go). If there’s one person she might encourage Danny to explore his bisexuality with it’s probably Ethan, and she might see it as an opportunity to help Ethan step out of the closet and stay out. I’d guess those two are the men she trusts most in the world, assuming she’s been honest about her feelings about the breakup with Ethan.

OTOH, we don’t know if an even slightly open relationship is palatable to anyone involved here, so that’s a potential problem.

Tangentially, Becky shares a remarkable number of traits with Jimmy Olsen. Red hair, freckles, tendency to make impulsive decisions and say things that they shouldn’t, looks good in women’s clothes. Just needs a signal watch and she could totally be Amazi-Girl’s pal.

Male is a biological descriptor of your sex, and isn’t directly linked to gender. It describes your DNA and plumbing, not your sexual identity.

Masculine would be the correct term for describing someone with the stereotypical “guy” gender identity. Gender is more nuanced than biological sex – one either is or isn’t male, but masculinity is a spectrum of behavior.

Admittedly, very few people use those terms correctly.

True, that, about the terms, but masculine isn’t a gender either. Masculine is the human norm; feminine is a deviation; gender is a deviation from the human norm. QED. It’s like this textbook about health and medicine that I have: it says that females and people of the feminine persuasion are disruptive because they aren’t male/masculine. Well, it doesn’t say that explicitly but since it doesn’t say anything about male/masculine in the context, just stuff about how f/f people have problems fitting into health/med institutions, I’m inferring that the f/f have problems cause they ‘aren’t quite the thing’ (ie, m/m). So, sex AND gender are problems because f/f make them so. It’s like Henry Higgins sang in My Fair Lady…. although in the interest of full disclosure I should probably state that my first girlfriend explained to me that I was suffering from testosterone poisoning; she was very tolerant, though. (Just in case, the preceding is plays off of a marvelous Shortpacked episode about transformers and sex/gender, (among other things), in which Lucy receives the very blankest of blank looks when she uses, basically, the above approach on a customer ranting about female transformers, because transformers don’t have sex/gender. I showed that cartoon to someone I know who teaches about masculinities, who thinks that cartoon is fabulous.)

PS, the textbook is real. It includes little sections about ‘women and X’, ‘women and Y’, ‘Women and Z’, but nothing about men/masculinity and those topics. And even those sections are glued on, not integrated into the main lines of the text, as if someone realized, ‘.Hey, we need to include chicks in this!’ Which is better than what went before and a start, BUT… Oh yeah, testosterone “poisoning” is real, also. Sort of. Depending how you look at it. I think the “poisoning” part was her interpnetation. She may have meant it as a joke. Or not.http://message.snopes.com/showthread.php?t=25638

To be fair, testosterone (aka androgen) isn’t very gentle with your body. With all else being equal, men will always have shorter life expectancies than women, and the reason is that testosterone increases the risk of things like heart attacks. Oh, and the anabolic steroids whose dangers you’ve been warned about? That’s basically synthetic testosterone. And I haven’t even mentioned prostate cancer.

Your body does plenty of things that aren’t always beneficial to itself.

Yeah, I wasn’t arguing against the possibility of testosterone poisoning. It’s the bit on slightly more than half of our species somehow being deviations from the norm due to being women. That’s bogglingly awful science.

Well, the book is neither old nor new, it exists in Text-Book-Time, which I’m sure you know: a “new” edition every couple of years, with a few bits added and a few subtracted — maybe “completely revised” every generation or so…. Anyway, I hope that I didn’t give a false impression about what it says explicitly. Above is my take on it from xraying it’s beneath the skin structure. Which really is badly out of date. Though common enough still. The academic equivalent of “background radiation” from the Big Bang. But The authors don’t claim to have “thoroulhly revised” the thing in light of the past generation’s research on sex and gender. They just tacked on some sections about F/Fs … and “race”, and “ethnicity”and … they may have mentioned non-straight, etal. … or not? Yowza.

While this is correct, it’s worth noting that this is for purposes of clarity, rather than for any kind of crazy social-justice bent or to pwotect pwecious feewings.

In practical discussions of gender and sexuality, considering only realistic situations (for instance, talking about bathrooms), the average person only needs to concern themselves with 2 gender identities, male and female.

However, in an academic setting, you have to say that someone has a “masculine” gender identity, as opposed to “male,” or else you become ambiguous about whether someone is biologically male or simply identifies male. There’s nothing wrong with this!

Also remember that in casual/political settings, “masculine” is a descriptor to describe someone who shows a specific set of culturally expressive traits, such as being tough or strong. In academic settings, “masculine” is someone who identifies and appears to adopt a set of cultural values relating to their birth sex – therefore you can be a shrimpy librarian with a man-bun who likes poetry and soft kitty cats and still have a masculine gender identity.

And again, most people won’t ever have to care about this unless they are lucky enough to know someone who deviates from the typical gender binary…something many social justice advocates seem to miss.

I’m advocating for proper use of words, not social justice. Misuse “nauseous” and “nauseated” and I’ll be equally cranky.

That said, I think there are far more people living outside the usual binary gender identities than you believe. Knowing one or more of them (at least on a casual level) isn’t “lucky” or especially rare anymore.

Three times, I think. The flashback attack on Sal during her arrest, the fight with Blaine, and arguably the parking lot brawl with Sal and friends. All of them chain back to the first incident and her hellspawn of a father, and she seemed a little less out of control during the most recent break.

She needs help, but she’s a long way from being broken beyond the point where she can get that help.

It was borderline, partly because Sal refused to paly along. Her being so off script from the villain Amazi-Girl was looking for diffused things a lot. Almost like walking away from a dangerous situation is a better idea than escalating it, eh?

It would be interesting to see, since Sal doesn’t seem to have a clue about their past history (or Ethan, for that matter). Be interesting if she immediately sees through Amber’s secret identity – that costume’s not that good. “Hey, you’re that girl in the cape from the parking lot. What the hell’s your problem, anyway?” Having Sal finally connect the dots and go “Meh, that was a long time ago. I’m over it, why aren’t you?” would really be fairly hilarious, and would yank the rug out from one of Amber’s bigger obsessions.

Too right. The boss of my last-but-one job lost his family, his house, and his business largely because of the impact of psychiatric meds that were prescribed by multiple doctors without them doing adequate checking on what their cumulative effects would be. When did we even see them dating? Did I miss a high school flashback? By the time they got to college it was already over for Dorothy, and she had to hit Danny in the head with a metaphorical brick to get him to realize it. If there was a lack of openness and honesty at that point it was because Danny’s perceptions were wrong and Dorothy was steeling herself to belatedly make it clear that they were through.

When I said it’s weird, I just meant that it’s strange in general to see a couple only having this kind of conversation after breaking up, not within the context of the strip. If I recall correctly, Dorothy’s and Danny’s words/actions both made sense from their perspective.

It helps that it’s coming after Willis has a clearer view of both their characters, and years of character development and changes for both of them.

But, yeah, I’ve really loved their interactions this past week. It’s nice that Danny has somebody he can comfortably confide to when he doesn’t know who to talk to.

Sticking those labels on them is cute, but maybe oversimplifying things.

Danny’s been very monogamous to date, to the point where even Amazi-Girl joked about it being inconvenient. But monogamy is one of the more changeable parts of a person’s sexual identity, and often springs mostly from a desire not to hurt your partner. If it becomes a hurtful trait because your partner desires a more open relationship, relaxing it to monogamish or limited-group poly is hardly a fanciful development.

Amber’s insecurities appear to revolve around her father and her fear of losing control of her actions. When it comes to sexual stuff she seems plenty resilient to me. Ethan comes out in bed on prom night and what’s her response? She stands by him against the homophobes in his circle for months, and continues to try to help him work through the bizarre relationship he fell into with Joyce. That is not the behavior of an insecure woman. Sexing Danny as Amazi-Girl is worrying more as a sign of a personality disorder than insecurity. She’s certainly been confident in bed there, and there’s some indication that she’d like to transition towards her Amber persona being part of things as well. Note the way she stops doing “the voice” when it comes to pillow talk the last time they were together on camera, especially when she thought she’d hurt him. That’s Amber talking, not the super-hero.

Ethan’s probably the biggest sticking point to me. Can’t get a good read on his libido, or whether he’s really interested in Danny in bed, or if his past history with Amber would keep him away from any relationship with her in it. Still, not sold on him being super-traditional about things. We’ve mostly seen him while he was trying to stay in the closet, including as a bearded couple with Joyce. How much of that is him, and how much was part of trying really hard not to be out?

A triad’s still optimistic, but there’s arguments for it being feasible.

      • Rycan
        Rycan
        May 3, 2015 at 7:32 pm | #

How would a triad work, if Ethan has no attraction to Amber? They’d just wind up competing for Danny.

        • Rich
          Rich
          May 3, 2015 at 8:14 pm | #

“Competing for Danny” implies a jealousy that shouldn’t exist in an ideal grouping. Sharing Danny seems like what would wind up happening, either in three-ways or with Danny moving between beds from night to night. No relationship is ideal, but poly folks tend to have very little jealousy within their group or they don’t hold together.

The fact that Ethan’s not interested in Amber sexually isn’t a deal breaker at all. Of the three poly groupings I’ve known well, two of them included partners that had absolutely no sexual interest in some of their fellows, and one of them never wound up with more than two people in bed together at once in the four years I knew them. Some poly relationships are all about everybody piling in at once, but thinking they all do is a misunderstanding on par with believing that all bisexuals are naturally non-monogamous.

Danny is right to be careful about telling Amber. Dorothy interviewed AG and was told AG had nothing to do with beating up Blaine, but Danny saw the rage. Neither of her sides is likely to handle this well. Oddly enough, AG might handle it better, since she is immune to criticism, while Amber might flip tables and break bones.

On the plus side, she likes Danny and enjoys\ needs the sexytimes, but it seems like affection and a casual relationship. Danny is the monogamous one. She’s Batman and he’s the disposable girlfriend who ends up realizing it won’t work long-term.

Amber probably won’t react poorly to Danny being bisexual, provided he doesn’t mention that his body is totally lusting after Ethan. After all, being bi doesn’t mean he’s dumping her (he should but not because he’s bi) and it just gives them something in common to talk about.

I don’t think they ever really could work out. Even if he’s mellowed out and gained some more confidence, Danny is still a very relationship oriented person, and going to Yale is still Dorothy’s number one priority, she’s just allowed herself a social life instead of becoming a bookbound hermit like she was expecting.

At best, the two of them would stay together until Dorothy went away, and that wouldn’t be good for either of them. They both want totally different things out of life and it would hurt them both if they kept at it.

True, that, though IF Dorothy were male and Danny were female there might still be many folks who’d want and expect Danielle to drop out of IU to follow Ted (Theodore) to New Haven. A very short time back Joyce said she’d give up a “stupid job” for family. There’s even plenty of colleges in New England if Danni wanted to continue work on a degree (besides her Mrs.). Would Ted reject that?

Probably? I mean assuming we’re keeping all personality traits the same here, it wouldn’t change the fact that Dorothy isn’t looking for a lifetime commitment kind of relationship, and Danny is. Maybe a female Danny wouldn’t have been so dismissive of a male Dorothy’s goals, but I don’t think that would have kept them together. Dorothy was going to break up with him anyway, having her dreams be dismissed was just what made her give up on trying to be gentle about it.

With everything else remaining the same being the pivotal issue. Because not everything about personality is not personal, personality is affected in ways we are still discovering by social norms regarding, sex, gender, etc. I am really asking what people think, but I do believe that there are many dimensions of life in which the norms differ for men and women. I ask people if the ole Sexual Double Standard has faded away and the answers are decisively NO. I suspect that the same is true regarding SOs/spouses leaving their niches to follow the other. But I’m interested in what others think

Not even the most progressive person in the world is going to be free of gender biases. There would be a difference, but I don’t think it would be a big one. The only ways I could see a big difference being made is if Danny is less likely to hope than Dorothy will set aside his/her ambition, and if Dorothy is more likely to tolerate Danny throwing his/her life away.

I’ve loved movies ever since I was a little kid. Just stepping into that dark theater, with the smell of fresh popcorn, was like being transported to a whole other world. It used to be so magical. But now I’m thinking about boycotting movies altogether. Why? Because I can’t seem to watch one anymore without […]

It's not a new argument, of course, but Chesterton dismissed it effectively in 1908. "You will hear everlastingly... this argument that the rich man cannot be bribed. The fact is, of course, that the rich man is bribed; he has been bribed already. That is why he is a rich man."

Who can forget the Swiss-Austrian Union, or its famous capital - Istanbul.
AI generated ad by a company called Travello showing the 10 most visited cities in Europe, except the cities are hilariously poorly placed. London is in Wales, Paris is in Ireland, Rome is in France, Rom (yes like Rome but without an E) is in Spain, Barcelona is in Morocco, Prague is in Germany, Vienna is in Italy, Istanbul is in Austria, Milan is in Libya, and Antalya is correctly shown as in Turkey but is in the wrong place. Also a few of the borders like Switzerland and Austria or Hungary and Slovenia are missing.

wilbur, savvy enough to know he's in a comic strip but still not a great actor, awkwardly lifts a muffin up into frame so that we, the audience, understand that he has a muffin right now, which is very important narratively, but he's not really selling it well as an organic, human action

Check out those stickers. They make him look pretty great, actually. That aircraft carrier mode shines. Tidal Wave is loose and incomplete! So there's only four (4) jets!

It's #webcomicday? We have a special day??? Well, my name is Pat McHoarney and I draw 69 Mouse-Ear Blvd, a multigenerational story about women who all have sexy legs and probably other features. There was a grandmother, but she wasn't hot and so she died off-panel.
