I had a friend in college who was pie-sexual. He was a bit of a snob about pizza but I try to keep myself from believing that one necessarily implies the other.
It’s probably been a while since you were a student. Students are irresistibly drawn to the words ‘FREE PIZZA’. Doesn’t matter the kind or quality – you put up those words, they will come.
That’s true. Why is it that even really crummy free pizza still has merit over its equivalent, non free counterpart. Even if you think you wouldn’t want to eat either because it’s so crummy. But then it is happening and it is still good.
It’s funny, I’m actually “allergic” to some pizza chains, like I get a migraine headache when I eat their pizza because of something in their sauce or dough, so there are definitely times that I would turn down free pizza depending on where it comes from. I’m not a snob about it, I just don’t want a debilitating headache.
Otoh I’m also ace so I turn down free sex every time but that is neither here nor there, haha.
I think I know what you mean, while I don’t recall ever having a headache as a result of a pizza, there are two nearby pizza joints I don’t go to anymore because the pizza base has this weird flavour that builds up the more you eat until your tongue revolts against you.

Not really. My impression of them afterward was pretty much: “Wow, these people are terrible,” mainly from how they listed as one of their accomplishments keeping a gay student group from being officially recognized by the university (this was the late 80’s).

Look, we all have exceptions. Our culinary orientation is far from straightforward. Like, I am normally a meat-eater, but sometimes you just have to have some delicious sushi.
I almost never eat pizza at restaurants. Where I leave they’re always at least 15 bucks and there’s no guarantee of deliciousness. I always just buy margherittas and my favourite toppings if I don’t have any left at home. Cheaper and delicious-er.
That song was really popular, I think, because a lot of gay people related to dreaming of a wonderful, magical place, over the rainbow, where troubles melted away and everything was better.
It’s not really because of that particular scene that “friend of Dorotby” was used as slang – actually, pretty much the reverse is the case. The usage of rainbows as gay symbols is mostyl as a result of the importance of the Wizard of Oz in gay culture.
“A friend of Dorothy” is a slang term for gay/lesbian, apparently Judy Garland who played Dorothy in the 1939 Wizard of Oz was an early advocate for the gay community.
The Wizard of Oz is a really important film in gay culture, and Judy Garland is a gay icon. Oz is the origin of the usage of rainbows as gay symbols. “Friend of Dorothy” is old-time slang for “gay” from a time when it was far more dangerous to openly tell someone you were into people with genitals like your own, so there had to be code words.

In the early 1980s, the Naval Investigative Service was investigating homosexuality in the Chicago area. Agents discovered that gay men sometimes referred to themselves as “friends of Dorothy.” Unaware of the historical meaning of the term, the NIS believed that there actually was some woman named Dorothy at the center of a massive ring of homosexual military personnel, so they launched an enormous and futile hunt for the elusive “Dorothy”, hoping to find her and convince her to reveal the names of gay servicemembers.
That’s so awesome. I love that the greek translation twist. At the same time the poor archaeologists who dug out antique cities discovered art and artifacts that were considered a bit… ah risque for the morals at the time.
I have an amazing 1930’s reprint of a late 1800s translation (mostly) of a book from the late Seventeenth Century called “Lives of Fair and Gallant Ladies” (which is mostly this old guy (who once met Elizabeth I when she was very old)’s reminisces about all these women he has known. Seriously, it’s awesome; one of my favourite bits is the part where he says of course your wife is going to sleep with other men: Naturally, she’s going to want to show off all the cool moves you taught her; and you can’t expect the guys to just take you at your word about how great she is in bed, any more than you’d take your buddy’s word about what a great, smooth gait his horse had, without trying it out for yourself. Lol.
Anyways, the relevant part is that it’s “mostly” translated, because there is one section about lesbians that is apparently too shocking to translate from the original French. And sadly, my sub-par high-school Quebecois is not up to the task of translating a fiddly bit of Seventeenth Century prose that is rife with innuendo.

Ok, I’m genuinely starting to suspect that Walky may not be entirely a Kinsey 0. First there was his conversation with Danny at the party where he was commenting about how the universality of finding Jacob hot (http://www.dumbingofage.com/2015/comic/book-5/03-the-butterflies-fly-away/conceding/) and now here he’s casually joking about oral sex.
Sure, I get the whole bro culture of reducing homosexual male desire to a joke, but I dunno, I’m starting to get the same vibe off of him that I get off friends’ parents right before they start talking about how “everyone” had an experimental phase in college and that everyone has that one same-gender actor/actress they find hot.
And there is a lot of cultural pressure for those who are Kinsey 1 or 2 to round down to straight and never acknowledge it because it’s not an even 50/50… so who knows?
I think it’s also interesting to note that, until he met Dorothy, Walky was pretty firmly entrenched in a “girls are gross” mindset. It’s possible he could encounter a similar situation on the other end of the gender spectrum.
I don’t know. To me he just comes across as very secure in his straight-ness, so he doesn’t have any qualms about sexuality, his own or other people’s. I know a ton of straight people like this.
Also, to your second point, a lot of people really do have that one non-straight experience when they’re young but they’re genuinely straight. That’s a thing that actually happens in the real world a lot. I’m not trying to bi-erase people’s experiences, I am bi and I hate when people do that. But some people are just straight and trying to put love labels on them that they don’t identify with is equally wrong.

They were talking about rounding down a 1 or a 2 to ‘straight’. 0 is completely straight. I’m a 3 and I’d never call myself straight, ever. Maybe you’re right in so far as to the possibility that some people may not know about this scale (or any other scale, since Kinsey is not the be all end all on this matter) and therefore are unaware that 1s or 2s even exist, so they just call themselves straight. To me, personally, 1s and 2s are not straight. But then again, everyone can identify however the heck they please. This is just the way it is to me
We (as in, the culture) has made it WAY more comfortable for 1s and 2s to call themselves “straight with an exception”, “gay for [name here]” than to actually use the word “bi”.
My sexuality is a little complicated. I’m homoromantic, and mostly into only women, but I’m also demisexual (I’ve developed physical attraction to three friends so far, ONLY after knowing them for years, when before I was ACTIVELY so very NOT attracted to them; I tend to find male actors attractive ONLY as the characters they play, and ONLY after I’ve gotten attached to those characters through years of watching), and effectively that makes me at least a little bi.
So instead of lesbian I tend to call myself queer these days when I don’t have time for a long speech.
But that doesn’t change how deeply biphobia is embedded in our fabric, how long it took me to come to terms with my own bisexuality, how much I felt like I was… betraying…? someone? something???, how terrifying it was to feel like I was back at square one with my sexuality.
So as a 5(?) who previously said “gay” when asked, I just wanna observe this: while labels ARE personal, and no one should be forced to call themselves bi or pan, we don’t as a society make it comfortable to self-identify as “bi” or “pan”, and that’s going to affect how people label themselves.

I guess I’ve just encountered more of the rounding down types (the people I’m thinking of weren’t just, yeah, I experimented but it turned out I wasn’t really attracted to that, but more, oh yeah, I felt that way, but it was a phase or it doesn’t really count, so fie on you bi person and just outgrow it or were the types to discount their attractions to same gender individuals or otherwise downplay aspects of their sexuality that aren’t 100% straight.
That all being said, if Word of God says straight but open-minded, I’ll defer to that.

I’ve always rated Walky at least a 1. He’s comfortable with gay people, and doesn’t seem turned off by the idea of sex with a guy. Since he’s only had one lover, and he’s still coming to terms with that, his sexuality is pretty up in the air.
I mean, I was pretty secure in my straightness until I realized I wasn’t straight, and then I was pretty secure in my not-quite-straightness until I realized I was bi, and now I’m pretty secure in my bi-ness. So being secure in his sexuality doesn’t preclude later realization that maybe there was more to the story.
Sometimes listening to people talk about the supposed universality of things like having an “exception” attraction to a particularly attractive celebrity or easily falling for ideas of homosexuality as a choice makes me wonder sometimes if the real amount of bi spectrum people on the planet (much less this comic) are northwards of 50%.

You think it’s charming how BB has no respect for anyone’s boundries? How he’s constantly harassing Raven, a girl he knows has emotional problems to the point of manifesting a demonic personality? How he requires constant validation from everyone around him?
Well- Uh- I- … uuuh I haven’t changed my look on Teen Titans since I was a kid and of course as I kid I never picked up on all of that.
So I don’t know if this is just me trying to excuse his behaviour because I really like him or genuine thoughts, but…
Well, first of all, he’s a teenager. Most teenagers don’t get personal boundaries. Secondly, all his inavion-y stuff towards Raven, he’s not -constantly- harassing her. He teases her when she’s in her usual mood, and goes over the line only when she seems not to be doing very well. He does it because he cares about her, and he wants to help her get out of her bubble, get her to talk to him, the way I see it. It’s clumsy, but he’s a teen and a bit simple-minded. He doesn’t know any better. I have emotional issues, and social phobia, and have locked myself into a bubble. I would love for someone to pull me out of it. So I do find that side of Beast Boy charming. Lovely even.
As for him needing validation from their surroundings, it’s not a flaw, or irritating, it’s an obvious psychological issue he has.
And lastly, you got something reversed. Raven doesn’t manifest demonic because of her emotional problems, she has emotional problems because of her demonic DNA that she got from her super-evil, super-horrible demon-father, and her daddy issues, and the fact that she’s known all her life that she would cause the end of the world.
She has the scary demon eyes and stuff when she gets angry because in that moment she has trouble controlling her demonic side. The demon is the cause, not the symptom.
But like I said. Maybe I’m just telling myself all these things because I don’t want to hate Beast Boy. I do dislike him in Teen Titans Go. But then, I hate all the characters in TTG except Raven, so that doesn’t say much. XD
Idk, I don’t care for Jacob too much. He’s nice to look at, but there isn’t really much else, at least not that we’ve seen yet. But tbh even if I voted purely on physical hotness, I’d probably still go for Walky over Jacob. More my type. *shrugs*

Don’t obsess over it! The Kinsey scale is super flawed anyway. We don’t have to put numbers and percentages on our attractions. I’m bi and if I have to, I always say I’m a solid 3, but I’ve met people who identify as bi (pan, queer, etc) and as 1s, 2s, 3s, 4s or 5s. It literally doesn’t matter. ‘Non-straight’ is also super popular among my friends. Or ‘no labels’. Everyone should identify the way they want to and everyone should just accept other people for their chosen labels or non-labels. Peace and love, ya know :3
I think he’s made some great steps. He showed some understanding with the race issues with Sal as well, even though it took him a while. But I really believe he gets it now. And there’s nothing hotter to me than character growth

Well, those are part of the multiple spectra form some of us use, but don’t exactly fit the common single spectrum format as it ignores strength and commonality of sexual attraction and/or urges in favor of a metric measuring whom such attraction is for.

You’re technically right in that sex for food is not free. However, if Walky wanted both the sex and the food, then it wouldn’t be a price so much as a steal disguised as a bargain. Perhaps he was afflicted with both hunger AND thirst?

I wouldn’t say that Joyce looks close to violence here. I think she seems to be more exasperated than anything else. I mean a couple of chapters ago, she said “I’m going to get some soft serve” in a manner that could be interpreted as “Fuck you Walky”. This seems mild compared to that.
Actually, a lot of people go for LGBTQIA. Doesn’t really cut up the consonants though. That’s why I’m partial to QILTBAG. It’s inclusive, cute, and people are less likely to complain about having to remember 7 letters in a row when they can pronounce it phonetically (despite having already learned 26 by age 5 but that’s neither here nor there)
I’ve seen LGBT+ and LGBTQ+ used. It acknowledges the existence of other genders and sexualities besides LGBT while still being reasonably pronounceable.
There are potentially a lot more letters in that “alphabet soup”. Opinions differ, but there is still no all-inclusive term (or finite series of letters) for the panoply of sexualities, intersexes, transes, ….

I’ve always been in full support of using “Queer” to refer to the community as a whole. Among several advantages would be the removal of the ambiguity between “Gay” as in specifically homosexual men and “Gay” as in the entire alphabet soup. Unfortunately there is severe pushback from older homosexuals that still cringe when they hear Queer due to its use as a hate term back in the day. Of course younger homosexuals that had Gay thrown at them with the exact same inflections and hate are supposed to just suck it up and deal with it.
yeah, I like “queer” too! It has the nice advantage of including every side that would like to take a part in it in the future, it sounds jolly to me, and it’s easy to insert in a conversation.

Huh, yeah, if I move past my suspicions that he’s bi spectrum and hasn’t realized it about himself yet and assume he’s just straight, that is actually quite a bit of a dick move.
It’s an organization about being a welcoming safe space for queer individuals and specifically focusing on those in the more vulnerable stages of self-identity and if Walky is just a straight guy, then he just invaded that space, is being disrespectful to the people there by turning their sexuality and sexuality-related struggles into a joke, and is doing it all to consume their food.
And that’s really disrespectful (I’ve had my share of experiences, usually running or attending ace events where someone tags along either as moral support or for the free food or something to do and ends up taking a big shit on everything halfway through by derailing shit into their own ignorant assumptions).
Which I guess is why I’d prefer the explanation that he’s not 100% straight, as it’d make him less of a jackass.
He’s only a jackass if he starts making people uncomfortable. He’s not invalidating a safe space by being straight any more than Joyce or the co-founder is. Friendly straight people are always welcome at these events.
I’m not sure, when a character just finished telling them that everyone is welcome, you’ve decided he’s invaded their safe space. It sounds like it’s basically a LGBTQA meeting; if Walky is willing to be open and listen, and doesn’t make people uncomfortable, all the more power to him.
It’s not so much that he’s being straight in a queer space as that he’s loudly making jokes about queerness. So if he’s straight, coming in and going ha ha ha free pizza, I’d suck a dick for pizza, amirite is turning himself into a performance instead of being supportive.
I don’t know how to explain it right but there is a difference between being supportive and in tune with the purpose of the space and making the space about your experiences as a dominant group member and in many ways its the difference between being a positively regarded ally and being that jackass that gets queer people to stay home for the next meeting.
And again, I’m speaking from a perspective of running some of these meetings and spaces that are welcoming to allies only to have some privileged idiot run their mouth and make the space all about them.
But then again, I’m totally on team bi and hasn’t realized it yet, so whatever.
As Cerberus said. To me, at least in this comic, it seems like he’s not there to learn or be an ally, but just there for the pizza. I’m a lesbian but attend a group for bisexual students because I know plenty of lesbians who give bi-women a ton of crap and they could use allies. If he’ there as an ally, great! In this comic, however, it doesn’t feel that way. Still, we’ll just have to wait and see.
Well, he’s a lot of talk but I think there might also be a genuine interest to learn. He likes Becky, he knows about her shitty situation and he knows that both Joyce and Dorothy wants to help her. I don’t think he’s beyond trying to better himself as an ally.
I realize that this is a joke that is getting played for laughs, but in all seriousness, never do this in real life. Attending an introductory group function just to get free food is a major college faux-pas, and doing so for a group that is designed to be a safe space for a minority group takes that faux-pas up to Dick Move status. Don’t Do It.
Except it’s made clear straight people are perfectly welcome there and Walky’s already shown himself as someone whose cool with other lifestyles. I see no problem here. Out of the three straight people here so far Joyce is the most likely to make someone uncomfortable.
About the second point, he might just be bad at explaining a more detailed and nuanced observation. He was right, after all. He also didn’t throw that idea in Ethan’s face, it was just his private conversation with Dorothy.
Sure he was right on all counts, but its his views on “proper” masculinity that influenced it. “Ethan must be gay, because otherwise he would all about Joyce in the same way that I am over Dorothy. To deviate from what I define as proper masculinity means there must be a deviation.”
Except he was. Like all the time. There’s plenty of reservation in the moments where Joyce makes him act overtly couply due to her jealousy of Dorothy and Walky, which is how Walky decided that Ethan was gay.
Sure, he was right, but that doesn’t change that Walky based his decision on his own definition of masculinity.
There was a strip where Joyce had to make Ethan put his arm around her. I remember Walky being there with Dorothy. I would suspect something was going on if I saw that. Maybe not that he was gay at first, but certainly that something was screwy about their relationship
I remember the scrollover text for some comic in the past mentioning that the only thing Joyce and Walky had in common was their adherence to outmoded gender roles.
As adorable as Walky is sometimes, his views on masculinity are pretty cavemanish.
Of course, these events do need to be open to people like that, if nothing else, because invalidating a cover story from a questioning person who is there to get information but too shy to admit it shuts out people the meeting was made for.

The thing is the implication is that Walky has no interest in the meeting or its subject matter, only the free pizza. He then shoots Joyce (of all people to say it to) what may or may not be a crude ‘funny’ about what he’s willing to do for free food. So, yeah, its possible that he’s going to be a jerk (whilst not realising that he’s a jerk).
I doubt that he’ll make people uncomfortable; if he sticks around beyond the pizza (which is not a given) he’ll just be loudly oafish in a way that demonstrates that he neither understands nor particularly cares about the issues. After all, they do not affect him personally and he typically regards anything that doesn’t affect him personally as a joke or just irrelevant.
I would love Bryan to see Danny randomly on campus and say to him, “Hey, I didn’t see you at my ‘Group Meeting for Questioning Individuals,’ ” only for Danny to become increasingly flustered: “What?! I’m not! . . . why would you think? . . . but . . .”

That’s true. Why is it that even really crummy free pizza still has merit over its equivalent, non free counterpart. Even if you think you wouldn’t want to eat either because it’s so crummy. But then it is happening and it is still good.
It’s funny, I’m actually “allergic” to some pizza chains, like I get a migraine headache when I eat their pizza because of something in their sauce or dough, so there are definitely times that I would turn down free pizza depending on where it comes from. I’m not a snob about it, I just don’t want a debilitating headache.
Otoh I’m also ace so I turn down free sex every time but that is neither here nor there, haha.

The Wizard of Oz is a really important film in gay culture, and Judy Garland is a gay icon. Oz is the origin of the usage of rainbows as gay symbols. “Friend of Dorothy” is old-time slang for “gay” from a time when it was far more dangerous to openly tell someone you were into people with genitals like your own, so there had to be code words.

I have an amazing 1930’s reprint of a late 1800s translation (mostly) of a book from the late Seventeenth Century called “Lives of Fair and Gallant Ladies” (which is mostly this old guy (who once met Elizabeth I when she was very old)’s reminisces about all these women he has known. Seriously, it’s awesome; one of my favourite bits is the part where he says of course your wife is going to sleep with other men: Naturally, she’s going to want to show off all the cool moves you taught her; and you can’t expect the guys to just take you at your word about how great she is in bed, any more than you’d take your buddy’s word about what a great, smooth gait his horse had, without trying it out for yourself. I don’t know. To me he just comes across as very secure in his straight-ness, so he doesn’t have any qualms about sexuality, his own or other people’s. I know a ton of straight people like this.
Also, to your second point, a lot of people really do have that one non-straight experience when they’re young but they’re genuinely straight. That’s a thing that actually happens in the real world a lot. I’m not trying to bi-erase people’s experiences, I am bi and I hate when people do that. But some people are just straight and trying to put love labels on them that they don’t identify with is equally wrong.

They were talking about rounding down a 1 or a 2 to ‘straight’. 0 is completely straight. I’m a 3 and I’d never call myself straight, ever. Maybe you’re right in so far as to the possibility that some people may not know about this scale (or any other scale, since Kinsey is not the be all end all on this matter) and therefore are unaware that 1s or 2s even exist, so they just call themselves straight. To me, personally, 1s and 2s are not straight. But then again, everyone can identify however the heck they please. This is just the way it is to me
We (as in, the culture) has made it WAY more comfortable for 1s and 2s to call themselves “straight with an exception”, “gay for [name here]” than to actually use the word “bi”.
My sexuality is a little complicated. I’m homoromantic, and mostly into only women, but I’m also demisexual (I’ve developed physical attraction to three friends so far, ONLY after knowing them for years, when before I was ACTIVELY so very NOT attracted to them; I tend to find male actors attractive ONLY as the characters they play, and ONLY after I’ve gotten attached to those characters through years of watching), and effectively that makes me at least a little bi.

But that doesn’t change how deeply biphobia is embedded in our fabric, how long it took me to come to terms with my own bisexuality, how much I felt like I was… betraying…? someone? something???, how terrifying it was to feel like I was back at square one with my sexuality.
So as a 5(?) who previously said “gay” when asked, I just wanna observe this: while labels ARE personal, and no one should be forced to call themselves bi or pan, we don’t as a society make it comfortable to self-identify as “bi” or “pan”, and that’s going to affect how people label themselves.
I suppose. I guess I’ve just encountered more of the rounding down types (the people I’m thinking of weren’t just, yeah, I experimented but it turned out I wasn’t really attracted to that, but more, oh yeah, I felt that way, but it was a phase or it doesn’t really count, so fie on you bi person and just outgrow it or were the types to discount their attractions to same gender individuals or otherwise downplay aspects of their sexuality that aren’t 100% straight.
That all being said, if Word of God says straight but open-minded, I’ll defer to that.

I’ve always rated Walky at least a 1. He’s comfortable with gay people, and doesn’t seem turned off by the idea of sex with a guy. Since he’s only had one lover, and he’s still coming to terms with that, his sexuality is pretty up in the air.
I mean, I was pretty secure in my straightness until I realized I wasn’t straight, and then I was pretty secure in my not-quite-straightness until I realized I was bi, and now I’m pretty secure in my bi-ness. So being secure in his sexuality doesn’t preclude later realization that maybe there was more to the story.
90% of the people in this comic are bi, so I just assumed walky was too.
Sometimes listening to people talk about the supposed universality of things like having an “exception” attraction to a particularly attractive celebrity or easily falling for ideas of homosexuality as a choice makes me wonder sometimes if the real amount of bi spectrum people on the planet (much less this comic) are northwards of 50%.

Well- Uh- I- … uuuh I haven’t changed my look on Teen Titans since I was a kid and of course as I kid I never picked up on all of that.
So I don’t know if this is just me trying to excuse his behaviour because I really like him or genuine thoughts, but…
Well, first of all, he’s a teenager. Most teenagers don’t get personal boundaries. Secondly, all his inavion-y stuff towards Raven, he’s not -constantly- harassing her. He teases her when she’s in her usual mood, and goes over the line only when she seems not to be doing very well. He does it because he cares about her, and he wants to help her get out of her bubble, get her to talk to him, the way I see it. It’s clumsy, but he’s a teen and a bit simple-minded. He doesn’t know any better. I have emotional issues, and social phobia, and have locked myself into a bubble. I would love for someone to pull me out of it. So I do find that side of Beast Boy charming. Lovely even.
As for him needing validation from their surroundings, it’s not a flaw, or irritating, it’s an obvious psychological issue he has.
And lastly, you got something reversed. Raven doesn’t manifest demonic because of her emotional problems, she has emotional problems because of her demonic DNA that she got from her super-evil, super-horrible demon-father, and her daddy issues, and the fact that she’s known all her life that she would cause the end of the world.
She has the scary demon eyes and stuff when she gets angry because in that moment she has trouble controlling her demonic side. The demon is the cause, not the symptom.
But like I said. Maybe I’m just telling myself all these things because I don’t want to hate Beast Boy. I do dislike him in Teen Titans Go. But then, I hate all the characters in TTG except Raven, so that doesn’t say much. XD

I’ve seen LGBT+ and LGBTQ+ used. It acknowledges the existence of other genders and sexualities besides LGBT while still being reasonably pronounceable.
There are potentially a lot more letters in that “alphabet soup”. Opinions differ, but there is still no all-inclusive term (or finite series of letters) for the panoply of sexualities, intersexes, transes, ….

Among several advantages would be the removal of the ambiguity between “Gay” as in specifically homosexual men and “Gay” as in the entire alphabet soup. Unfortunately there is severe pushback from older homosexuals that still cringe when they hear Queer due to its use as a hate term back in the day. Of course younger homosexuals that had Gay thrown at them with the exact same inflections and hate are supposed to just suck it up and deal with it.

Huh, yeah, if I move past my suspicions that he’s bi spectrum and hasn’t realized it about himself yet and assume he’s just straight, that is actually quite a bit of a dick move.
It’s an organization about being a welcoming safe space for queer individuals and specifically focusing on those in the more vulnerable stages of self-identity and if Walky is just a straight guy, then he just invaded that space, is being disrespectful to the people there by turning their sexuality and sexuality-related struggles into a joke, and is doing it all to consume their food.
And that’s really disrespectful (I’ve had my share of experiences, usually running or attending ace events where someone tags along either as moral support or for the free food or something to do and ends up taking a big shit on everything halfway through by derailing shit into their own ignorant assumptions).
Which I guess is why I’d prefer the explanation that he’s not 100% straight, as it’d make him less of a jackass.

I’m not sure, when a character just finished telling them that everyone is welcome, you’ve decided he’s invaded their safe space. It sounds like it’s basically a LGBTQA meeting; if Walky is willing to be open and listen, and doesn’t make people uncomfortable, all the more power to him.

I don’t know how to explain it right but there is a difference between being supportive and in tune with the purpose of the space and making the space about your experiences as a dominant group member and in many ways its the difference between being a positively regarded ally and being that jackass that gets queer people to stay home for the next meeting.

I’m a lesbian but attend a group for bisexual students because I know plenty of lesbians who give bi-women a ton of crap and they could use allies. If he’ there as an ally, great! In this comic, however, it doesn’t feel that way. Still, we’ll just have to wait and see.

About the second point, he might just be bad at explaining a more detailed and nuanced observation. He was right, after all. He also didn’t throw that idea in Ethan’s face, it was just his private conversation with Dorothy.
Sure he was right on all counts, but its his views on “proper” masculinity that influenced it. “Ethan must be gay, because otherwise he would all about Joyce in the same way that I am over Dorothy. To deviate from what I define as proper masculinity means there must be a deviation.”
There’s a lot of room between “all over” and “never even in the vicinity of”. The latter is what Walkie drew his conclusion from.

There was a strip where Joyce had to make Ethan put his arm around her. I remember Walky being there with Dorothy. I would suspect something was going on if I saw that. Maybe not that he was gay at first, but certainly that something was screwy about their relationship

I remember the scrollover text for some comic in the past mentioning that the only thing Joyce and Walky had in common was their adherence to outmoded gender roles.
As adorable as Walky is sometimes, his views on masculinity are pretty cavemanish.
He’s totes cool with Dorothy becoming POTUS one day, though, so no problems with women having a career outside of the kitchen at least.
Of course, these events do need to be open to people like that, if nothing else, because invalidating a cover story from a questioning person who is there to get information but too shy to admit it shuts out people the meeting was made for.

Maybe Joe will come in hopes of seeing some hot lesbian make-out sessions. Maybe Danny will be there, saying he showed up, “for the pizza — yeah, I came for the free pizza! What about you, Ethan, are you also here for the pizza?”
I’ll reserve judgement on Walky for now. Let’s see how he behaves during the meeting.

Yeah; I expect Dina to hang around for a bit, just to observe the behaviour of Joyce and maybe Danny (if he appears). Then she’ll see Raidah and Jacob leaving the building and will go to follow them.
I’m hoping she sticks around here for a while, but I’m also really hoping she meets up with Becky later in the day. Especially if they happen to make that pose that they are doing in the SDCC poster thing on the front page of the site.

The thing is the implication is that Walky has no interest in the meeting or its subject matter, only the free pizza. He then shoots Joyce (of all people to say it to) what may or may not be a crude ‘funny’ about what he’s willing to do for free food. So, yeah, its possible that he’s going to be a jerk (whilst not realising that he’s a jerk).
I doubt that he’ll make people uncomfortable; if he sticks around beyond the pizza (which is not a given) he’ll just be loudly oafish in a way that demonstrates that he neither understands nor particularly cares about the issues. After all, they do not affect him personally and he typically regards anything that doesn’t affect him personally as a joke or just irrelevant.

I don’t think it’s surprising that people are taking umbrage at Walky casually being an ass at an extremely important gathering.
With the exception of Sarah and Ruthless and a few others (Faz or Riley come to mind), all the characters in this comic are immature freshmen.

It’s called gay bravado. The joke is that straight dudes act super flamboyant and upfront and make raunchy comments in the name of “acting gay.”
Maybe Walky just doesn’t consider gay dudes to be less real men, therefore gay acts don’t threaten his masculinity.

Hey if we’re gonna use the Japanese terms, they don’t pluralize with an s; all nouns are implicitly singular plural inclusive, depending on context. (The pluralizing suffixes -tachi and -ra are used only very sparingly, and don’t convey quite the same thing as -s anyway.) I figure you know this since you only did it with fujoshi but in case you or anyone reading didn’t!
Also, and more importantly, fujoshi is pejorative, though semi-reclaimed. (Commonly it is translated as rotten girl, the fu- prefix conveying badness, brokenness, grossness.) Fudanshi would have the same meaning but for men.
