Damn it Walky go drop that class already! You’re stressed out and LYING to your girlfriend. Neither of those things are good for you or your relationship. If you want to try and get through the class, go get some tutoring. If you notice any improvements, decide rather or not you think you can keep the pace without burning out. If not, drop before the drop date. Life only gets harder from here so ya gotta learn how to fail and be okay with it.
It’s been a month – the drop date is probably past, or if not, very close to passing. At this point though, it’s best to take the withdraw mark already.
I’ve never heard of drop dates that soon. I mean, you haven’t even gotten your midterm grades. Heck, six weeks was the automatic drop out point (if you never showed up), and a month is less than that.
Now, it’s probably too late to get into another math course. The only way that could work is if he talked to a bunch of people who were willing to work with him. (Including having him make up the work he missed.) And, I guess, having an in with the dean could help.
Most drop dates I’ve seen (including for IU) are usually around the end of September, early October- you don’t need a midterm to know a class isn’t working for you.
Clicking through there also suggests that late August/early-mid September is usually when the late drop sessions start, but they can end by October. So he still has time to drop and take a withdrawal mark, sure, but the point where he can drop and have it not show up is most likely past. I apologize for my goof up though and I’ll try to double check those in future before I open my mouth ….er, type my post….dammit, forums ruin colloquialisms like that don’t they?
To drop without it showing up on your transcript at all, it needs to be during the continuous add/drop period, which ends the Sunday after the first week of classes (for Fall 2016 this was August 28th, though for our DoA crew it would’ve been September 5th, a.k.a. Book 2 Chapter 2). If you look at August 29th on both my link and yours, they both say “Grade of W begins for all drops.” Since this was before Walky started struggling, not showing up on the transcript at all was never on the table; it’s just a question of getting an automatic W vs most likely getting an F.
Yuuuuup. Which is why I said he’d definitely be taking a withdrawal mark now. As I said, even the latest of the drop/add period ended in mid Sept in the past years I looked at, so he’s been SOL well for a while on that count.
I think we’re just having a terminology clash, then. The drop date that (I’m 99% sure) Bluewind and most everyone is talking about is the date (barring extenuating circumstances) to drop and get a W rather than an F, which, as mentioned, is October 23rd for the Fall 2016 term (for the Dumbing of Age crew it’s probably either October 24th, since that’s the Sunday for them, or October 31st, since Dumbing of Age classes started 8 days after real world Fall 2016 classes started). So he’s got 2-3 weeks to get his act together before the Point of No Return
Thank you Tan. Yes, that’s what I meant. He still has time to drop the class and have a W on his record rather than an F. Apologies for not making myself more clear in my original post.
Yeah. I’d never even heard of dropping without the W. If I could’ve done that, I could have saved my scholarship. I knew that I wouldn’t get an A in my class when he announced that there would be a physical project. I can do the math, but I’m a horrible engineer.
Ahhhhh, okay, yeah. I was thinking of the day you can drop without any consequences, which is from late August to early-mid September at latest, in which case he’s out of luck. He probably has a few weeks to still take a withdrawal mark, yes.
Geez, if I remember correctly we had automatic drop if you missed the first class and the drop by dates were a couple weeks in… we were on a quarter system though.
Yeeeeeeah, I somehow have a feeling that Walky will -not- do any of those things.
For one thing, those things require a certain level of maturity, self-insight, and -not- having your identity tied up into being “genius without even trying”.
In other words, it requires the Anti-Walky.
Oh, and haven’t been much around the last few days. How have you been, Bluewind?
I think hell is a good descriptor of my week. Got a migraine because those hotdogs dad swore were MSG free weren’t. Popped out a filling a few days after my dentist appointment and she had an emergency so she’s been out of town so I can’t see her until the end of the month. It’s starting to get cool and my car heater isn’t working. My nephew is getting married on Sunday and I have yet to even get him a card (which will have money in it because somebody forgot to tell people the date of the wedding or send out invites until 3 weeks before and I have had 0 time to shop). And my dad’s dog (26 lb 1 year old black lab mix) decided that bottle of ant poison dad threw away because he thought it was empty would make a great chew toy! He’s okay now, but it was close. I’m lucky in that I have my vet’s cell number and had him walk me through first aid.
Lol! That would be a hoot. They said after the Christmas proposal that they were getting married in a year, but neglected to tell anyone the date! The good news is that dad did not like the only wedding appropriate outfit I own, so he gave me money for new pants and a top.
I ended up getting a bunch of little things (and a $20) with a reason for each in the card which I’ll give to them at the wedding tomorrow.
Picture Frame: to fill memories so that when the years pass he and she can look at them and be transported back in time to when they were made.
Chocolate: so both will still have sweets when the cake is all gone
A tree picture with the word family below it: to welcome her as a new edition to our family tree (God help her) and to remind him that no matter how far apart we are, we are still connected
Fuzzy Socks: to keep her feet warm when she snuggles him at night
Circus Peanuts (candy): so that a little bit of Mamaw would be there for their wedding (they were her favorite)
But aside from all that, things are going great? Sorry if that’s a bit inappropriate. A week like that and I would have snapped, humour is my coping mechanism. I like your reasoning on the wedding presents, very thoughful.
What is Dorothy upto exactly? She was picking up trash, making “sympathetic” talk with Billy etc in the morning. Now she has some other duties to attend to. She prbbly isnt the new RA, but is she helping out whoever it is?
There isn’t a new RA yet. The RM is filling in for the interim.
I’m pretty sure talking to Billie was just her trying to be nice to an acquaintance / friend-of-a-friend that she knew was having a rough time. The garbage, I think was just her being a bit of a dork, I dunno.
If I had to guess what’s she’s up to now, I’d say she’s checking into possible options relating to her morning discussion with Amber and the events at the rally last night.
I still think Billie should promote herself to the position just by moving into the room and doing the job. She’s already got step 1 down, and she did okay at step 2 last time she filled in for Ruth.
That last is one of the funnier panels.
I know, it’s sad. Poor Walky, he is sure doing things the hard way. Get a tutor and get grades up and stop hiding.
And yeah I know, easier said than done.
Reginald isn’t a twin, he’s a royal doppelganger. Like in The Prince and the Pauper. Except when they trade places, Reginald is not going to learn much about ordinary society, and Walky’s common-sense judgments are not going to impress anyone.
That job has a credit requirement (or a college will flat out state in its requirements that one has to at least be a sophomore–as mentioned somewhere above), so prepare to be surprised.
If I may, that is only the uninformed view of stress and quite incorrect.
As commonly seen stress is a pressure on you you need to relief or face health consequences, yes, but while that’s true at the face of it, as long as stress is reliably released, it is GOOD for you. Or even when the occasional mistake is made(say, you are late for your bus) but you manage to overcome it(by sprinting with everything you’ve got and catching it in the nick of time), it will still get you a good natural high mood, self-assurance, and possibly satisfaction in your success (if you are not the type to curse yourself for ending up running for the bus in the first place). All of that jointly is worth a few dead cells.
No. Only Willis can edit comments. I think he tried, at one point, to install a plug-in that would allow people to edit their recent comments, but it didn’t work.
“Ah! Dorothy might see me!! Where to hide, where to hide…
Got it! Hide behind the tall, hunky, incredibly handsome gay man!
He’s SURE to draw the female gaze away from me!”
Unrelated to today’s strip, but I’m gonna call right now that before this storyline ends we’re gonna get a scene with either Jocelyne or Hank in La Porte. Mostly cuz I really want one
The way she’s racist is that she’s kind of continuing racist aggression against Sal. She doesn’t, by and large, center her actions, but continuing unfair aggression on legal pretexts with a black student… perpetuates a very different narrative than it does against a random white student.
She has, in point of fact, admitted to Sal’s face that she uses the law as a pretext to behave unfairly. Her intent was to goad Sal into the fight she desperately wanted, but that intent matters surprisingly little – and surprisingly, her actions back up that /stated/ intent more than the /actual/ one.
Amber isn’t really particularly racist (Probably about average, wherever /that/ lands her in the DoA-verse, which pointedly tries to be less terrible), but wrt Sal, she’s done really racist shit. Which she may have recognized as of the last AG scene. Or she may not have. Whichever. She’s on track to no longer doing the racist shit, which is all I’m really concerned with in that regard. XD (Though I do want her to grow, b/c I am affectionate towards all the Dumbs and want them to be happy. Yes, ALL of the Dumbs)
I hope Josh Johnson is given The Daily Show and is allowed to rebuild it from scratch in his own image just like Jon Stewart got to do in 99.
He has built his own groundbreaking form of topical comedy, and imitating the style of others is something he is great at, but better than.

Walky’s like one of those Sneekums toys
I need this SO MUCH in my life
i wonder if dina gives lessons in not being seen. walky could use some.
Lesson 1: Do not stand up.
Don’t hide behind the water barrel.
(explosion)
The larch. The larch.
Number 73: The naughty bits of a fountain.
That only works on Joyce.
Walky, the only way you’re going to pass this class is if you have sex with a certain bow-tie wearing character.
Didn’t work for Sal, but maybe he’ll have better luck?
Only if the sex is really fantastic and he promises not to tell anyone afterwards.
I already told him NO.
Not even for some Jammie Dodgers or jelly babies?
Only if I’m also promised tea.
Naw, that doesn’t work; that’s why Sal started talking to Wonder Bread Boy!
Next time he should have Dorothy wear a bow-tie rather than a Mac ‘n Cheese tee?
Dorothy would look adorable in a bowtie and you know it.
But what if she wore the Mac ‘n Cheese shirt AND a bowtie?
And a business suit.
I’ve got a thing for women in business suits.
top-hat, white-tie and tails!

Don’t think they do mac’n’cheese at the Ritz …
Or he could develop study skills…
He could do that. Sure. But something tells me he’d rather be eating nachitos instead.
Solution: Nachitos with study guides printed on them.
What could go wrong?
He’ll eat them all in an attempt to ‘consume all the knowledge’, but not actually read them.
That’s just crazy talk.
Since we never saw Walky go behind Ethan, I’m just going to assume he’s been there for this entire scene.
And neither Amber nor Ethan saw him. He must have been great at hide and seek.
Hide and geek?
Slide and peek?
Hiding in Ethan’s back-pocket?
“Is that a Walkerton in your pocket or is your ass just happy to see me?”
No, it’s the Pocket Walkerton Edition!
A wild Walky appears!
Did Walky take lesson from Dina to how to hide in plain sight?
We know AmaziGirl and Walky are best friends, but will Amber like him as much?
Will Walky make the connection?
Walky, get out of Ethan’s pants.
That’s what we have Danny for.
It’s similar but differs slightly from the intoxicating rush of productivity.
Aw geez, in case I needed further confirmation Dorothy is me.
Jesus Walky ! I think Amazi-girl can learn a thing or two about stealth from him.
oh walky. your name is only walky you can’t run from your problems yet.
Walky, Walky, in the rain
…it’s the rain
Okay, just went back and checked, just in case.
*plays Joe Jackson’s “Invisible Man” on the hacked Muzak*
*followed by “Walk, Don’t Run”*
Reginald returns!
But is not tagged correctly.
Damn you, Willis!
The Duke hides whereever he damn well pleases!
…sir.
Why is Walky hiding again? Or do we not know yet?
He doesn’t want Dorothy to know he has trouble with math.
“Hiding Behind The Gay Man” is the name for the first album by my 80s Post Punk revival band.
Track 3- “Stress is Fun”
Oh man, this is so ridiculous but the blocking on yesterday’s strip makes it entirely possible. I love it.
I have to assume Walky snuck up on them while they stopped for Pokemon in “Oil” and then just stayed GLUED to Ethan’s back.
Maybe Walky was a Pokemon all along!
Walky has been learning from Dina
I wonder if Dina’s teachers forget to mark her work. Do all of Dina’s possessions have the same unnoticeability? Walky would be hella jelly.
Larry Niven wrote about something like this in “A Gift From Earth”.
You know it was very nice of Dina to give Walky stealth lessons despite the fact they don’t see eye to eye when it comes nom-canonical dinosaurs.
Walky is apparently a Scooby-Doo character.
He’ll be stuttering through the word “math” in no time.
“M-m-m-ma-math? Like, how ’bout we get some Nachitos instead?”
And now that we’ve seen him with AG we just need Dumbiverse versions/equivalents of Sandy Duncan and the Harlem Globetrotters.
Saw them around 25 years ago. Funny show.
Well, he can be bribed with junk food…

https://studentcentral.indiana.edu/calendar/official-calendar/index.html says October 23rd for the Fall 2016 term.
That’s considered a late drop though, and it gets you a withdraw mark. The point where you can drop a class without a withdraw mark is in the first week of classes. https://studentcentral.indiana.edu/register/dropping-adding/late-drop-add.html
And last year’s late drop start was August 31st,and ended for the term in September if I’m reading this correctly (and my apologies if I’m not): https://onestart.iu.edu/ccl-prd/GroupCalendar.do?methodToCall=publicCalendar&pubCalId=GRP1469

Also, gift cards to adult toy stores is always appropriate for surprise weddings. They surprise you with the wedding, you surprise them with the gift.
And a few months later later, they get another surprise!
Lol! That would be a hoot. They said after the Christmas proposal that they were getting married in a year, but neglected to tell anyone the date! The good news is that dad did not like the only wedding appropriate outfit I own, so he gave me money for new pants and a top.
Bachelorette shirt that says “Here comes the Bride”?
Oh, wait, appropriate.
If your car heater isn’t working, and doesn’t already have built-in seat heaters, you can get a seat heater pad for pretty cheap.
Also pretty nice even when the regular heater works, since they warm up much faster, and conserve precious butt-warmth rather than stealing it away.
Ah yes. We much protect our precious booty
But aside from all that, things are going great? Sorry if that’s a bit inappropriate. A week like that and I would have snapped, humour is my coping mechanism. I like your reasoning on the wedding presents, very thoughful.
He’s not LYING yet. Right now he’s merely HIDING from her.
That way he doesn’t have to lie and its fine, everything’s fine
What is Dorothy upto exactly? She was picking up trash, making “sympathetic” talk with Billy etc in the morning. Now she has some other duties to attend to. She prbbly isnt the new RA, but is she helping out whoever it is?
She’s making a power play for the position.
As a freshman, she cannot be an RA.
They skipped from RA to RM? What happened to RB through RL?
…
…
…
I’ll see myself out.
Because 7 8 9!
…the Aristocrats!
I’m doing it wrong, aren’t I?
No, I beleive that was an appropriate response.
I still think Billie should promote herself to the position just by moving into the room and doing the job. She’s already got step 1 down, and she did okay at step 2 last time she filled in for Ruth.
Yeah, what is this urgent stuff Dorothy’s going on about?
I kinda assumed that Walky was the important stuff that she had to “do”.
I don’t think that’s the case…
I imagine that in panel 3, both Amber and Ethan are assuming that it’s Walky’s stuff that Dorothy is planning to handle.
She knows? Nah, not yet I think.
Oh she’s done him alright.
Nah, as far as she knows he’s in math class.
Monty Python – How Not to be Seen
It’s all fun and games until someone gets blown up…
Wait, since when? Was there a memo about that until part that I missed?
I think you blew up the mailman that was supposed to deliver that memo to you.
But what about the whole “glom of nit” thing? I thought nothing stopped a postal worker from delivering?
Maybe they thought you were Mrs. Cake.
I thought nothing stopped a postal worker from delivering?
Other than going on strike.
Strike is the state of having stopped themselves, not the force that brought about the stopping.
They’re like the Juggernaut that way. Only they can stop themselves, unless you remove their headgear and take control of their minds.
Fine, let’s go with “unsatisfactory wages and benefits” as the reason for stopping.
Well they do need the mail if they’re going to deliver it, whether or not they’re in pieces.
Then it’s hysterical?
That last is one of the funnier panels.
I know, it’s sad. Poor Walky, he is sure doing things the hard way. Get a tutor and get grades up and stop hiding.
And yeah I know, easier said than done.
Watch out, Walky. your evil twin*, Reginald duke of Thingley, who once wore a pink mouse costume, is here for your blood.
*) NO, Linda. Sal is not the Evil Twin. She just has a shitty mother. Jeez.
Reginald isn’t a twin, he’s a royal doppelganger. Like in The Prince and the Pauper. Except when they trade places, Reginald is not going to learn much about ordinary society, and Walky’s common-sense judgments are not going to impress anyone.
I wonder if Dotty’s potentially important stuff has to do with the congress woman.
Maybe a she got a mysterious tip from a concerned citizen only known as ‘Jessica’
Speaking of which, did you ever put up the petition for a ‘Jessica’/Robin Slipshine?
There’s an alternate universe one, but for some reason Jessica’s name is ‘Leslie’ in it.
Huh, weird. Isn’t the ship in that universe at full sail?
A very common name
Ethan contains Walkitudes? Well, he IS fairly large… and I think he was contradicting himself recently… hmm.
Stress is fun? That statement does not make sense.
Also, how did Walky do that? Has he been taking lessons from Dina?
Allow me to explain via song:
https://youtu.be/AEu78VeGzCM
Dorothy is one of those people that likes to do things. She likes being busy, having work to work through, having goals to achieve….
….That still doesn’t make any sense, does it?
Well then I don’t make any sense to you!<3
When work is too stressful, I find other work to wind off.
Yeah, if you’re having fun, you’re not really stressed, are you?
I really wouldn’t be surprised if Dorothy got Ruth’s job…
That job has a credit requirement (or a college will flat out state in its requirements that one has to at least be a sophomore–as mentioned somewhere above), so prepare to be surprised.
And Dorothy wants to be The President. Don’t assume that a comic book will listen to reality too closely.
Ooooh You are SO grounded, young man.
“Stress is fun”?
Do you want health issues? ‘Cause that’s how you get health issues.

My bad. I still wish I could edit these. Are registered commenters able to?
No. Only Willis can edit comments. I think he tried, at one point, to install a plug-in that would allow people to edit their recent comments, but it didn’t work.
Ethan and Walky … I’d ship it.
“Ah! Dorothy might see me!! Where to hide, where to hide…
Got it! Hide behind the tall, hunky, incredibly handsome gay man!
He’s SURE to draw the female gaze away from me!”
“No one will think of looking at me if I stand near this majestic beautiful mountain of a man.”
Unrelated to today’s strip, but I’m gonna call right now that before this storyline ends we’re gonna get a scene with either Jocelyne or Hank in La Porte. Mostly cuz I really want one
Meanwhile, at the Legion of Doom…
I can’t help but interpret that as her not-so-happily admitting she’s not having fun, given that nervous smile before it.
I wonder if Amber will freak out due to her completely denied racism.
What racism are you referring to?
Well it’s completely denied, so maybe we just can’t see it?
I think they’re referring to her unprovoked anger around people who look almost/exactly like Sal… in other words: Sal and Walky.
Which hasn’t really presented as racism as far as I remember. It’s more about a face, not a race.
She’s facist! Wait… no, that’s already a word for something else.
Why not lead the charge for a new word and a new homograph?
Shouldn’t have looked that up, imagination was much better.
Good thing Ethan’s so tall and Walky’s so short (for Walky anyway).
Doesn’t make up for all the scalp wounds.
