I think eew is an appropriate response to Danny assuming she is the one who needs to apologize, when he is the one who suddenly decided that the important part of her life that gave a constructive outlet to her violent tendencies had to go. A part she saw as giving her life value. I can understand why she thinks she needs to apologize, but Danny is just being clueless.

Because nearly calling him a piece of shit and dumping him on the spot for talking to his friend totally doesn’t warrant an apology. No he needs to apologize for recognising that the amazi girl thing is dangerous and unhealthy. Totally.
Or you know, he knows Amber and he knows she’s not calling him out for not apologizing to her, but that’s not a thing she would do and not how she would do it.
“I mean… I guess if you want to apologize…” is not exactly him thinking she needs to apologize, but him thinking maybe she wants to?
Danny is not being clueless. Danny is reading Amber correctly.
Pretty much everyone in the universe agrees that communication is one of the most important thing in a relationship. Amber dumped him just for broaching the topic of easing off the vigilantism. You cant have a relationship if you cant have a conversation. An apology is definitely warranted.
He was dating Amazi-Girl, not Amber. It was Amazi-Girl who dumped him.
For telling her he liked Amber better and wanted Amazi-Girl to be let out less. At least that’s one way to look at it.
It’s possible Amazi-Girl owes him an apology, but it’s Amber who feels she does.
The distinction between Amber and Amazi-girl is helpful for Amber’s mental processing but ultimately they are one individual. One can’t truly wash their hands of the others actions unless Amber is suffering from a complete psychotic break.
I kind of felt like he was gay in the original verse, but in denial. He specifically said that only Amber (ick) could change him from a 6 on the Kinsey scale to a 3. And what about his behaviour felt like actual sexual attraction, as opposed to (unconsciously) trying to act “right”?
Nah. While the presentation in question was specifically aimed at Amber his point was having sex with her would change his Kinsley scale. He never said only, just that she would if she did.
Remember he did end up finding a stable relationship in the end with a woman named Wren.
You’re thinking of pansexuality. That’s not the same as bisexuality. Bisexuality is a sexual attraction to two genders/gender identities/gender expressions, often defined as “Male and female”. Pansexuality is sexual attraction regardless of gender/gender identity/gender expression.
Nope nope nope nope. Bisexuality is attraction to both people of the same gender as you and people of different genders than yours. It’s pretty much interchangeable with pansexuality except that people may prefer one or the other to describe themselves
I’m not sure there’s broad consensus on this, but I think it is slightly more common to class bisexuality as signalling two attractive genders, but not limited to the *gender binary*. After all, “bi” means “two”, but it doesn’t say anything about “man and woman”.
My take- bisexuality is “I am attracted to that person and their gender/sex is part of it”, whereas pansexuality is “I am attracted to that person and their gender/sex is NOT part of it”.
For me as someone who has used both labels: Pan is what I use when I don’t feel like dealing with biphobes and prefer to deal with teacher mode. They are pretty much synonyms for me. Most bi folks I know take bi as “same and different genders.”
The ‘bi’ in bisexuality does not refer to two genders. It’s a common misconception, but it actually originates from the time when psychologists believed in ‘sexual inversion’, that is to say, that gay men had female brains, and lesbians male ones, etc. But then what do you do about these pesky bi people? Well, they’ve got two types of brain at once! The original term used was ‘psychosexual hermaphrodite’, but this was somewhat of a mouthful, so they used the botany term ‘bisexual’ instead.
Go to any major website for the bi community or read any piece of bi literature, and you’ll see that they rarely tie things down to two genders. One of the most popular definitions dating back to the 90s is Robyn Och’s declaration of “the potential to be attracted—romantically and/or sexually—to people of more than one sex and/or gender, not necessarily at the same time, not necessarily in the same way, and not necessarily to the same degree.”

I get really sick of people trying to use the “bi” in the word as evidence that those who prefer that term are stuck on a two gender dynamic.
To add to the above, bisexual also refers to three different spots location on the Kinsey scale (2, 3, and 4). Pan, Omni, and other similar terms are more detailed orientation descriptors but either have no place on the Kinsey scale or can only exist as solid 3s, depending on how strict your definition of what the Kinsey scale measures is (I’ve heard pan-identifying people go both ways – ha pun – on this – either that pan cannot be measured on Kinsey or that Pan is always 3).
Why is this important? Well, I identify as bisexual because I am a 4 on it – I am a person who is attracted to anyone regardless of gender BUT has a minor preference for those who present as female (my gender).
I cannot be pan or omni because those have no preferences for a specific gender. By liking everyone, but liking women slightly more than everyone else, the only term that applies to me is bi.
This is why broadly claiming that bi individuals “cannot” be attracted to all genders is both BS and terribly harmful.
As a bi person in a relationship with a non-binary person, I take exception to that. Bisexuality has been defined as “same and other genders”, and has explicitly included non-binary identities since at least 1990. (Look up Bisexual Manifesto.) I identify as bisexual rather than pansexual because my attraction to people of my gender (female) is distinct from my attraction to people of other genders (male, non-binary, etc), but, like most bisexual people, I don’t consider my sexuality to be limited to binary orientations.
As FinalOwen said, that’s a myth that originated from cishet outsiders labeling members of the LGBTQA community without their consent. Ultimately, the sources you should use when defining a sexuality are people who identify with that sexuality, full stop.

I also have a preference for fem presenting people so it doesn't seem right to say I am pan but that doesn't stop me from sometimes being attracted to masc or nonbinary presenting people so. That’s pretty much it. The Great Faz doesn’t fall into normal conceptions of sexuality. Much like Mike’s orientation is “whatever you don’t want it to be”.
Faz is 15. But the fact that he’s distinctly underage is a significant component of why his being aggressively sexual at literally everyone he’s actually interacted with grosses people out. (Another significant part is the fact that he is aggressively sexual at literally everyone he interacts with.)
There’s a difference between someone saying “welp, this person hit on me, guess I’m never into their gender again lol” and literally saying a not-straight person is straight. I took the comment to be a tongue in cheek look at Danny’s PoV it hit on by Faz.

Morning Margaritas are a thing, but I personally prefer the venerable ‘Shower Beer’, usually one of the last beers left in the bottom of the cooler/refridgerator from the night before, drank in it’s entirety in the span of a five-minute shower the next morning. Very good for staving off hangovers.

Why? This Faz limits himself to saying inappropriate things, Shortpacked!Faz actually tried to touch people, delighted in making people uncomfortable and committed actual felonies on the regular. The only way you could think that Shortpacked!Faz was the better person was if you took into account the fact that Shortpacked! is a comedy and as such creepy behavior is more tolerated then it is in a realistic work.
Shiro didn’t say that SP!Faz was a better person, just that they liked him better in SP!.
I agree, honestly. Mostly because THIS Faz is apparently a high schooler, and this behavior from a high schooler is somehow creepier to me. I don’t think I could explain why, though.
Him being a high schooler does add the possibility that it’s just extreme immature behavior that he’ll grow out of. In some ways I can see it making him creepier, but I can also see for some it makes it not as bad.
Faz has only limited himself to saying inappropriate things so far, and even so that doesn’t make it ok. Furthermore he’s made it more than apparent that he’s more than willing to go beyond that if he wouldn’t get arrested for it.
Like a lot of things that made the translation from SP to DoA, this Faz is less over-the-top cartoony and more realistically unpleasant. Hence he inspires a more visceral DO NOT WANT reaction in me. There’s also probably something to be said for time dulling reactions vs ones that are currently occurring.

Yeah, I was also going to point out the difference in story telling style. Over the top “wacky hijinks” were the norm in SP!, here they are not. People were similarly extremely uncomfortable with Robin’s behaviour with Leslie for the same reason. It wasn’t- and isn’t- over the top absurdity without grounding in something looking like reality any more.
I think you just explained why me and my friend seem to be the only ones who don’t hate characters like robin and mike. We still don’t see them as something to be taken seriously because we still see it as a goofy webcomic, just with serious themes. We all thought you lot were crazy for taking them so Seriously.
On one hand, I would love that. On the other, Danny and Sal seemed like a fun proposition. Then there’s Danny/Ethan, which I personally haven’t found that intriguing, but I know some people root for being a thing.
I feel like a proper Amber-Danny relationship would allow him to help her with her mental problems (or at least get her to someone) and ALSO be the Oracle to her Batman.

I don’t think that it is possible to promise not to repeat a behavior. The best that you can do is promise to try your best not to repeat it. I think that we are all doomed to do things that we would rather not have done, and then, lather, rinse, repeat. Keep trying, though, damn it, keep trying. Someday we may beat our demons and come out better.
plus there’s all kinds of minor things that you *know* you’ll eventually do again, but apologise for anyways. like bumping into someone, or being late. heck, even if you’re late on a regular basis, the apology is still worth something: you’re acknowledging that it happened and implying that you do at least *want* to improve.
Exactly. Plus, it’s also in the way you apologise. Different situations call for different kinds of apologies.
Now if one apologises for having hurt someone pretty deeply (emotional wise, and non-abusive, like e.g. a trust issue in a relationship or sthg like that), and wants to express how much they are sorry for it, they still cannot exactly promise to never hurt another person (or the party involved) again in the same or a similar circumstances. One can definitely try, and as you said, that’s what matters most.
Though depending on the situation, it probably also matters just how MUCH one can see that the other person tries. (I mean, you all probably know all this, I’m just really spouting my thoughts here, a bit like thinking loudly).
Like this example going through my head (not exactly fitting, but also not unfitting): There’s a difference between e.g. an alcoholic promising to never drink again and then just some weeks later get drunk at an after work-party without any possible reason besides “The others invited me to”, and an alcoholic who’s sober for quite some time and then just relapses one evening after a series of failures because of work stress, family stress (or other extremes) and whatever and everything became too much for them. The first didn’t exactly try to keep their promise (especially if the same thing happens again), the second did try, but then couldn’t handle it. There’s probably a significant difference between a “sorry” between those too. (Also for the sake of the thought experiment, let’s just say both are non-abusive when drunk but drinking is just very bad for their health because they have liver problems and they promised their families to take care of themselves).
To be honest though, I think this is probably because Amber saw the abuser’s apology too often. Apologising but nothing changes. And what does she fear more than becoming her father…?
So she won’t apologise unless she can GUARANTEE change, which is going to the other extreme. And going to extremes is common when subconsciously trying to rebel against- or placate- parental figures.
Jason, that, exactly. An apology needs to come with a promise to at least TRY to change (because sometimes change is hard), and the person apologizing needs to be transparent in the future for HOW they are working to change.
But all of that is a lot more nuance than people who’ve dealt with ongoing, systemic abuse are capable of, many times. They’ve seen too many false apologies.
Ah, jeez. This hits a little close to ome. Amber has a point in Panel 5, but I can’t help thinking she’s stopping too early. Apologies are great, until they do it again. That’s what I fucking wish my mom would learn (she’s back at her abusive boyfriend’s place, despite promising not to).

He’s probably wise to roll with it though, while pointing out he doesn’t feel that its necessary. My first instinct would’ve been to either argue explicitly that no apology was needed, or that she should let me decide for myself whether I want to accept it, and that would probably just lead to her pushing back harder and shutting me out again. Danny’s much gentler reaction is the way to go.
1. Introduce character with wacky quirk, half of fandom hates them, half of fandom loves them. (With variations based on how much the character is meant to be liked)
2. Reveal shocking plot twist that explains all of the characters behavior and makes them super sad.

Faz assumes that half of your commenters are female. If half the commenters enjoy Faz, this means all female commenters enjoy Faz, and therefore want to have sex with him. This logic is clearly flawless.
Sorry if that was discussed on yesterday’s comic or the one before that, but I think it is very indicative of Amber’s character that she hasn’t even thought of letting someone else deal with this unwanted intruder.
I mean, she tried with Ruth, but one might argue it would have been Ruth’ obligation to help remove him from campus, in her capacity of RA, and Amber could have called upon this obligation.
Whether Ruth would have agreed, is another matter entirely, but my point is Amber implicitly or explicitly thinks she has to take it all on alone.

Fair point, but Faz is that stupid and inappropriate taken to ridiculous extremes. Most of us say stupid and inappropriate things, but we feel embarrassed or ashamed of them and react somehow – stammering and apologizing, passing it off as a joke, something.
Faz calmly states them as facts.
Most teenage boys get inappropriate erections – they’ve got little control over it, but they try to hide it, wait for it to go away. Faz announces it to the world.
Once again, I’m left with the impression that I want people in this comic to give Amber a lot of hugs. (Except Faz, because… well, Faz. XD) In some ways, she really reminds me of my younger self in the darker periods for my mental health, and that… REALLY makes me want to hug her. Actually, can I teleport into this comic for the sole purpose of giving a lot of these kids a hug? (Only if they’re cool with those, of course.)

There are VERY heavy parallells to both Becky and Howard, so I’m really scared about where this is going.
Also – Faz ran into both Becky and Ruth early in his story arc to serve as visual reminders of their respective stories. I think Amber will have the big sis to Faz that Ruth is to Howard before this arc is over.
I wonder what Amber’s reaction would be to someone actually trying to hurt Faz? She seems to care about him at least a little, but would she go full mama bear and but the shit out of anyone who actually threatened him?
Actually, Amber, that serves as both an apology and an explanation in my book: You’re sorry but you are also aware that your mental health issues make it impossible for you to promise that you won’t have any further episodes. This is just me but I suspect that’s enough for Danny.

You have to decide wherever the apology or the person is worth more to you. There are things that are unforgivable and then there are things that you can forgive and at those are the ones where you want them to apologize because of your ego or just want them to apologize to have them back.

True, but that doesn’t really apply here. The problem is that Amber is about 120 pounds (…total guesstimate) of self-loathing and depression. Danny clearly has no hard feelings about anything that’s happened, so no apologies are, strictly speaking, needed. It’s Amber that’s insisting that she needs to apologize, and that she can’t rightfully apologize.
Well, it wasn’t really jealousy-induced. (I’m still half-asleep, please forgive the error.) More like “SHE IS MY MORTAL ENEMY, HOW DARE YOU TALK TO HER.”
So basically I guess all of her trauma-related issues that messed up their relationship, more or less.
I really hope she starts talking to a professional soon.
The split personality issues played a huge role there. Without being quite aware of it, Danny told Amazi-Girl that he liked Amber better and wanted Amazi-Girl to go away.
Little wonder Amazi-Girl broke up with him.
And, given the relationship between those two, little wonder Amber’s taking the blame for it.
i think there is a good reason faz is in this arc and its more than just to annoy amber and creepy everyone else out though i think it will be a while before its revealed..

Anyway Faz is great. Like obviously he’s awful and makes the characters and the readers uncomfortable, but that means he is performing precisely as intended by the author, and achieving a very effective emotional reaction that makes the story stronger overall. So like… in that sense, Faz is great.

I think eew is an appropriate response to Danny assuming she is the one who needs to apologize, when he is the one who suddenly decided that the important part of her life that gave a constructive outlet to her violent tendencies had to go. A part she saw as giving her life value. I can understand why she thinks she needs to apologize, but Danny is just being clueless.

Pretty much everyone in the universe agrees that communication is one of the most important thing in a relationship. Amber dumped him just for broaching the topic of easing off the vigilantism. You cant have a relationship if you cant have a conversation. An apology is definitely warranted.

You’re thinking of pansexuality. That’s not the same as bisexuality. Bisexuality is a sexual attraction to two genders/gender identities/gender expressions, often defined as “Male and female”. Pansexuality is sexual attraction regardless of gender/gender identity/gender expression.

I’m not sure there’s broad consensus on this, but I think it is slightly more common to class bisexuality as signalling two attractive genders, but not limited to the *gender binary*. After all, “bi” means “two”, but it doesn’t say anything about “man and woman”.
My take- bisexuality is “I am attracted to that person and their gender/sex is part of it”, whereas pansexuality is “I am attracted to that person and their gender/sex is NOT part of it”.
For me as someone who has used both labels: Pan is what I use when I don’t feel like dealing with biphobes and prefer to deal with teacher mode. They are pretty much synonyms for me. Most bi folks I know take bi as “same and different genders.”

I get really sick of people trying to use the “bi” in the word as evidence that those who prefer that term are stuck on a two gender dynamic.
To add to the above, bisexual also refers to three different spots location on the Kinsey scale (2, 3, and 4). Pan, Omni, and other similar terms are more detailed orientation descriptors but either have no place on the Kinsey scale or can only exist as solid 3s, depending on how strict your definition of what the Kinsey scale measures is (I’ve heard pan-identifying people go both ways – ha pun – on this – either that pan cannot be measured on Kinsey or that Pan is always 3).
Why is this important? Well, I identify as bisexual because I am a 4 on it – I am a person who is attracted to anyone regardless of gender BUT has a minor preference for those who present as female (my gender).
I cannot be pan or omni because those have no preferences for a specific gender. By liking everyone, but liking women slightly more than everyone else, the only term that applies to me is bi.
This is why broadly claiming that bi individuals “cannot” be attracted to all genders is both BS and terribly harmful.

As a bi person in a relationship with a non-binary person, I take exception to that. Bisexuality has been defined as “same and other genders”, and has explicitly included non-binary identities since at least 1990. (Look up Bisexual Manifesto.) I identify as bisexual rather than pansexual because my attraction to people of my gender (female) is distinct from my attraction to people of other genders (male, non-binary, etc), but, like most bisexual people, I don’t consider my sexuality to be limited to binary orientations.
As FinalOwen said, that’s a myth that originated from cishet outsiders labeling members of the LGBTQA community without their consent. Ultimately, the sources you should use when defining a sexuality are people who identify with that sexuality, full stop.

Why? This Faz limits himself to saying inappropriate things, Shortpacked!Faz actually tried to touch people, delighted in making people uncomfortable and committed actual felonies on the regular. The only way you could think that Shortpacked!Faz was the better person was if you took into account the fact that Shortpacked! is a comedy and as such creepy behavior is more tolerated then it is in a realistic work.

I agree, honestly. Mostly because THIS Faz is apparently a high schooler, and this behavior from a high schooler is somehow creepier to me. I don’t think I could explain why, though.
Him being a high schooler does add the possibility that it’s just extreme immature behavior that he’ll grow out of. In some ways I can see it making him creepier, but I can also see for some it makes it not as bad.
Faz has only limited himself to saying inappropriate things so far, and even so that doesn’t make it ok. Furthermore he’s made it more than apparent that he’s more than willing to go beyond that if he wouldn’t get arrested for it.
One could argue that Amber has limited Faz to saying inappropriate things so far – like by dragging him away from the girl’s showers.
Like a lot of things that made the translation from SP to DoA, this Faz is less over-the-top cartoony and more realistically unpleasant. Hence he inspires a more visceral DO NOT WANT reaction in me. There’s also probably something to be said for time dulling reactions vs ones that are currently occurring.

Yeah, I was also going to point out the difference in story telling style. Over the top “wacky hijinks” were the norm in SP!, here they are not. People were similarly extremely uncomfortable with Robin’s behaviour with Leslie for the same reason. I don’t think that it is possible to promise not to repeat a behavior. The best that you can do is promise to try your best not to repeat it. I think that we are all doomed to do things that we would rather not have done, and then, lather, rinse, repeat. Keep trying, though, damn it, keep trying. Someday we may beat our demons and come out better.
plus there’s all kinds of minor things that you *know* you’ll eventually do again, but apologise for anyways. like bumping into someone, or being late. heck, even if you’re late on a regular basis, the apology is still worth something: you’re acknowledging that it happened and implying that you do at least *want* to improve.
Exactly. Plus, it’s also in the way you apologise. Different situations call for different kinds of apologies.
Now if one apologises for having hurt someone pretty deeply (emotional wise, and non-abusive, like e.g. a trust issue in a relationship or sthg like that), and wants to express how much they are sorry for it, they still cannot exactly promise to never hurt another person (or the party involved) again in the same or a similar circumstances. One can definitely try, and as you said, that’s what matters most.
Though depending on the situation, it probably also matters just how MUCH one can see that the other person tries. (I mean, you all probably know all this, I’m just really spouting my thoughts here, a bit like thinking loudly).
Like this example going through my head (not exactly fitting, but also not unfitting): There’s a difference between e.g. an alcoholic promising to never drink again and then just some weeks later get drunk at an after work-party without any possible reason besides “The others invited me to”, and an alcoholic who’s sober for quite some time and then just relapses one evening after a series of failures because of work stress, family stress (or other extremes) and whatever and everything became too much for them. The first didn’t exactly try to keep their promise (especially if the same thing happens again), the second did try, but then couldn’t handle it. There’s probably a significant difference between a “sorry” between those too. (Also for the sake of the thought experiment, let’s just say both are non-abusive when drunk but drinking is just very bad for their health because they have liver problems and they promised their families to take care of themselves).
To be honest though, I think this is probably because Amber saw the abuser’s apology too often. Apologising but nothing changes. And what does she fear more than becoming her father…?
So she won’t apologise unless she can GUARANTEE change, which is going to the other extreme. And going to extremes is common when subconsciously trying to rebel against- or placate- parental figures.
Jason, that, exactly. An apology needs to come with a promise to at least TRY to change (because sometimes change is hard), and the person apologizing needs to be transparent in the future for HOW they are working to change.
But all of that is a lot more nuance than people who’ve dealt with ongoing, systemic abuse are capable of, many times. They’ve seen too many false apologies.

Once again, I’m left with the impression that I want people in this comic to give Amber a lot of hugs. (Except Faz, because… well, Faz. XD) In some ways, she really reminds me of my younger self in the darker periods for my mental health, and that… REALLY makes me want to hug her. Actually, can I teleport into this comic for the sole purpose of giving a lot of these kids a hug? (Only if they’re cool with those, of course.)

– Shown up from the blue
– Had a tour through the wing, met some of the cast
– Tagged along to class and said something inappropriate.
While
– Completely dodging any discussion about why he is here
– Having an evil, horrible father (who incidentally, the only people he know can stand up against is his cool sis)
There are VERY heavy parallells to both Becky and Howard, so I’m really scared about where this is going.
Also – Faz ran into both Becky and Ruth early in his story arc to serve as visual reminders of their respective stories. I think Amber will have the big sis to Faz that Ruth is to Howard before this arc is over.
I wonder what Amber’s reaction would be to someone actually trying to hurt Faz? She seems to care about him at least a little, but would she go full mama bear and but the shit out of anyone who actually threatened him?
Depends on why. Sarah clobbering him when she found him in the girl’s showers? Doubt it.
Blaine beating on him? Well yeah, but she’ll take any excuse to beat up Blaine. And then torture herself for it later.

Actually, Amber, that serves as both an apology and an explanation in my book: You’re sorry but you are also aware that your mental health issues make it impossible for you to promise that you won’t have any further episodes. This is just me but I suspect that’s enough for Danny.

I have to point out that as a kid I was similar to Calvin in how I played, so I may be biased against Faz here.

You have to decide wherever the apology or the person is worth more to you. There are things that are unforgivable and then there are things that you can forgive and at those are the ones where you want them to apologize because of your ego or just want them to apologize to have them back.

True, but that doesn’t really apply here. The problem is that Amber is about 120 pounds (…total guesstimate) of self-loathing and depression. Danny clearly has no hard feelings about anything that’s happened, so no apologies are, strictly speaking, needed. It’s Amber that’s insisting that she needs to apologize, and that she can’t rightfully apologize.
Nah, Amber’s about 300lbs of self-loathing and depression in a 120lb girl.
And it’s Danny assuming she’s the one who needs to apologize without a single thought questioning it.

So basically I guess all of her trauma-related issues that messed up their relationship, more or less.

The split personality issues played a huge role there. Without being quite aware of it, Danny told Amazi-Girl that he liked Amber better and wanted Amazi-Girl to go away.
Little wonder Amazi-Girl broke up with him.
And, given the relationship between those two, little wonder Amber’s taking the blame for it.
This would be an excellent time for Faz to spend the remainder of the chapter with a ukulele buried in his skull.
i think there is a good reason faz is in this arc and its more than just to annoy amber and creepy everyone else out though i think it will be a while before its revealed..

Anyway Faz is great. Like obviously he’s awful and makes the characters and the readers uncomfortable, but that means he is performing precisely as intended by the author, and achieving a very effective emotional reaction that makes the story stronger overall. So like… in that sense, Faz is great.
