  1. I MUST, in fact!!

    1. Whoa, I’ve missed your opening comments! (I actually don’t know if you had a first comment fairly recently or not, but if so, I forgot it.)

      1. I don’t know if I’ve seen one, recently. Have also missed seeing them. Welcome back (even if you’ve been back for a while and I somehow missed it)

        1. Oh weird. No gravatar. Will those be coming back?

        2. I feel safe in saying that’s a definite maybe.

        3. Mobile site still looks weird…..

        4. My grav’s sill throwing around his usual blue lightning. If you’re using any kind of ad blocker, check your settings. But it’s annoying that I have to enter my name and e-mail every time despite checking the “save” box.

      2. I think Ana’s been missing! It always makes me worry a little, wondering if they’re okay. Feels weird for them to be absent.

    2. “I have no girlfriend and I must make a mess.”

      1. “REPENT, POINDEXTER!” said the lesbian.

    3. The Ana has returned!

      1. As the prophecy foretold.

        1. As the prophecy will foretell, anachronistically.

    4. ah the prodigal Ana has returned ^-^
hope you have been doing well
      or at least, better than I am atm ;-;

    5. Ana’s back and alls right with the world.

      1. Well, Ana has returned anyway.

    6. get becky some booty shorts with bless this mess on them 8D

  2. Hi! Today’s January 31, and it’s also (probably) January 31 in the comic, so that means it’s Dumbing Day. So happy Dumbing Day, everyone! Go out and celebrate by doing something Dumb today. Have fun!

    1. i tried making McRib sauce. Does that count?

      1. The pork patty in Banquet’s “Backyard BBQ” meal is close to the McRib’s, and allegedly Aldi has one that’s nearly identical to McDonald’s. Then all you need is the onion and a bun.

        1. I’m gonna have to look for that Aldi one. the banquet sorely disappoints.

    2. I’m going to work. Does that count?

      1. I’m about to do the same, so …. yes!

    3. The dumb thing I did was go outside!
It hurts to breathe the air.
      Please help its cold

      1. Hot cocoa all around!
        🍵☕️🫖♨️🛀

    4. Def done. Done in spades!

      1. spades? what are those?

        1. @NGPZ not sure where the term originated but i think of spades associated iwth the face cards like king/queen/joker/etc/ace/diamonds tho i think it had other meaning/slooks?

        2. “In spades” just means, “to the highest degree”. From card games where “spades” cards were the strongest suit, over clubs, diamonds, and hearts.

The dumb thing I did in spades was get careless with taking too many different kinds of pain and muscle relaxer pills. (Nothing dangerous! Just dumb.)
The smart thing I did (admittedly not in spades, as it was pretty much the only thing I could do) was to spend the whole day in bed afterwards. Just trying to get these muscle spasms quieted down.

I hope you are starting to feel a little better, NGPZ! Does sipping hot bone broth help?

        3. Dwampre Scorrigank

          ^^

(facetiously) More importantly (and less relevantly, although coincidentally it sort of applies to today’s comic), in the comic Homestuck it’s one of the four quadrants of troll romance, the concupiscent Black Romance (or caliginous) quadrant representing KISMESISSITUDE, roughly arch-nemeses who bang sometimes. Romantically.

        4. Dwampre Scorrigank

(my dumb thing was making an irrelevant homestuck reference)

        5. oh wow @Laura i bet ya were hella conkin out afterwards LMAO

painkillers are very much warranted for me atm, specially cannabis — while my leg has gotten better, it’s still hurting and atrophied and I still can’t walk.
I also got a C. Diff. infection in my gut, so I have to go on 10 day med course for it, can’t even get my first iron transfusion until it’s sorted out
If I aint careful I can get deadly diarrhea from this…
          … I’m SO FUCKING SCARED 😭😭😭

        6. Oh, no, NG! I am *so sorry* you are dealing with all that! How awful for you!

…I’d offer to pray for your wellbeing, but, given the context of this comic strip, I’m not sure that would be welcome? So… “Go without God”? Is that better?

I dunno if it works for C. Difficile, but hubby’s fave go-to for diarrhea is chicken soup and saltines. Mine is glucomannan and coconut water.

The acronym I use for diarrhea-friendly foods is:
          “BE BRATTY”.
          Broth
          Electolyte drinks
          Bananas
          Rice (white sticky rice especially)
          Apples / applesauce
          Toast (whitebread toast especially)
Tea (hot herbal tea, like mint or peppermint tea, to sip slowly)
          Yogurt / yogurt drinks.

I dunno if that helps for C. Difficile, though. Whatever your doctors tell you.

Sending hopes and hugs your way!

        7. Thank you, Laura ;-; <3
im doing all i canz, the rest is up to Kami, and the late Akira Toriyama TT~TT

    5. On this Dumbing Day, I, a first-time reader, caught up to the latest update!

      1. Wow, that’s quite the epic journey! Welcome in!

      2. Happy caught up day! You may already know this but in case you don’t, the pacing will feel very different now that you’re caught up, it’s just the nature of webcomics as a medium.

    6. Every day is Dumbing Day.

      At least in my experience.

    7. I’m going to a rave that counts right?

  3. It’s happening, Dotty. You asked for this.

  4. NOWWWW They’re Arch Enemies!

    1. Arch-NEMESES, thank you very much!

  5. And here we see the Dorky pairing living up to its name.

    1. Wait and here I thought Dorky was Dorothy/Walky… actually y’know what similar goofball energy I’ll accept it.

Dorothy does give off Dexter (of Dexter and Monkey-Master) arch-villain laughing energy, too.

  6. I was actually worried at the end of yesterday’s strip

    1. So was I! I thought they were actually going to fight

  7. Eh. Punchline is pretty good, I’ll give it that much. Can we go back to Dina now please

    1. This seems likely, actually, given the first panel. Becky is reevaluating her Dina-status. This hopefully means that she’s going to work on the bits of her psyche that screwed things up, so that she can feel worthy of happiness with Dina again. And Becky prioritizing Dina may, in turn, help Dina decide that Joyce was right, and she deserves to be a bit selfish.
And as a plus, the tears of Doyce haters seeing this work in the comic will be as the sweetest of ambrosia to my soul.

      1. honestly, a part of me is kind of expecting that this exact thing was going to work just fine, but Dina actually considers Joyce’s advice, and takes it…selfishly rejecting Becky, and just choosing a world where she doesn’t feel like she’s a second choice, even if she previously questioned the validity of her own feeling. Making it so Joyce ends up completely fucking over Becky, through her assumption that throwing herself at the problem with full passionate bluster would automatically solve every problem in every situation. Given that the lesson that’s on the horizon for Joyce is “you can make decisions that feel good and right, and they can still backfire or blow up in your face or cause unintended consequences,” this would be a really tragic but poignant way for this to play out.

      2. Ok that’s nice what’s with the unnecessary swipe there at the end tho

        1. The constant unsolicited PvP around here has gotten pretty old and boring, hasn’t it?

        2. People feel entitled to say whatever at me because I’m – I guess – a prominent critical voice around these parts and it’s honestly really weird

        3. Odd, I didn’t see the name “Dot” in there. Given your rather personal reaction, are you certain the “swipe” was “unwarranted”?

        4. It’s obviously an unnecessary swipe at “Doyce haters,” a phrase which here means “people who are critical of the direction of the story.” But please, feel free continuing to be obtuse.

  8. awwwww :) i’m so glad that worked

    1. Me, too!! This is the energy I was hoping for!

Wait—who drew this comic & what have they done with (Damn You) Willis?? 😅

  9. honestly?

could be my autism, but like, trying to get a read on this strip is like trying to use a compass in an iron valley @-@

    1. I think Dorothy’s lived with Becky long enough to know that she’s a lot tougher mentally and/or able to compartmentalize a lot more than most people. And she also appreciates people being performative more than actual sympathy most of the time. Not that she DOESN’T appreciate it (especially from Dina or Joyce in the past), but considering her messy self-esteem most of the time it’s a “yeah I’ll be fine, don’t waste your time feeling sorry for me, let’s go to HIJINKS so everyone isn’t sadsville”.

So Dorothy is giving Becky exactly what she wants.

    2. Dorothy cares about Becky. Becky cares about Dorothy, but has had some conflicting feelings towards her because she did to some degree feel genuine jealousy and hurt over how close Joyce had become with Dorothy in her absence. Hence why she (Becky) has always played up the “We are enemies and you are here to undermine my relationships” bit. It’s an outlet for her feelings that she otherwise doesn’t know what to do with. Meanwhile Dorothy has always stonewalled this banter because she doesn’t WANT to be Becky’s “enemy”, she just wants to be her friend.

Now, Becky has more “legitimate” grounds to feel like Dorothy “stole” Joyce from her/is the cause of her current emotional turmoil. But rather than continuing to lean into the bit and be even more bitter at Dorothy, she had just given up. She admitted that they were never really enemies and that Dorothy has always been a good friend to her. She lost that emotional outlet and is now overwhelmed by her confusing and conflicting feelings, and is blaming herself fully rather than metering out some of the blame onto Dorothy to help her (Becky) cope.

Dorothy saw this, and decided to help Becky regain that emotional stabilizer by being the one to push and insist, no actually we ARE enemies and you SHOULD blame me for all of this. You thought we were friends? Ha! No! I am the cause of all of your problems! It’s not that YOU fucked up, it is that I planned and executed all of this to ruin your relationships once again! Muahahahaha!

Becky sees that Dorothy is doing this, and doing it for her, because they are friends and they do care about each other, and she’s accepting the olive branch. She’s going back into the safety of venting her emotions by “blaming Dorothy”, and letting some of that pressure off of herself. They both know this is an act. They both know they’re doing it for each other. They are each happy to provide the other with this outlet (Dorothy) and accept the stability and grounding it gives them (Becky).

But also there IS still a little bit of genuine resentment (that’s probably too strong, but close enough) that Becky feels towards Dorothy, so she IS going to push things A Little More than she was doing before (see: making her side of the room even more of a mess just to spite Dotty).

      1. Becky immediately choosing to make her room messier is also hilariously apt on multiple levels; it’s the exact thing Dorothy said would work to spite her, sure, that’s a good punchline; but, also, it alludes to the incoming messiness that this new cope is eventually going to cause; but, on the deepest level, not picking up laundry and having a messy space is, like, one of the quintessential stereotypes of a very depressed person. So, in a sense, Dorothy is giving symbolic permission for Becky to cope with her current feelings (or lack thereof, if you prefer to define it like that) in whatever way she needs to, even if it’s inconvenient for Dorothy, and Becky immediately turns her room into the stereotypical unwashed doomer tomb.

      2. Oh man, good read on the fact that now she has a good reason to actually hate her so people don’t perform their own grief at her which she doesn’t want. She can be mad at her comfortably. That’s so smart.

    3. Remember how Becky and Dorothy’s friendship was built on the whole “arch nemesis for taking Joyce away from me” thing that slowly evolved into a real friendship? The one that was largely a front to cover that they like each other and they are friends but it’s more comfortable to keep it antagonistic and distant? The gimmick Becky dropped when she saw Dorothy was having a crisis and called Walky over?

This is Dorothy reasserting it because it’s what makes them both comfortable. Yes, I did steal Joyce away from you — because I’m your EVIL ARCH NEMESIS, and I RUIN everything for you! Which is her way of saying, “I still love you and want to be friends,, and I’m so sorry about all this” and Becky knows that’s what it means too.

  10. Some Looney tunes dynamic going on here but I dig it.

  11. Dorothy: “Dang, we need a safe word.”

  12. *Odd Couple theme song intensifies*

  13. So Dorothy finally meets someone where they live. This is progress.

    1. (Yes, Dorothy also lives there. Everyone has to start somewhere.)

  14. i feel very normal ways about dorothy’s exposed canines

    1. If it helps I think you’re entirely welcome to them. Joyce has texture issues.

      1. idk, joyce seemed pretty jazzed about these bite marks dorothy left on her!
        https://www.dumbingofage.com/comic/hadsex/

    2. That tiny little v is making synapses in my brain go dark

  15. Tried to destroy your relationship? Now I’m desperately hoping that Joyce’s attempt to talk Dina around has actually made Dina commit to ending things. Don’t make this whole thing a waste of time where Dina settles for being a consolation prize.

    1. I don’t think Dina’s going to settle for anything.

I think Dina’s going to look up a bunch of hard domme reference material and Enact a Plan.

    2. Becky does not actually think Dorothy did that, she is joking. And Dina is not actually a consolation prize to Becky.

      1. Is Becky joking, though? Like…… is she? The inciting incident for their breakup was her choosing to watch them do kisses rather than talk to Dina.

        1. The inciting incidence was what?

        2. The big ear to ear grin might be a clue.

      2. No, no, if someone gets depressed at learning their first gay crush is gay but not for them, any other lesbian relationship they have must be a lie! That’s just how it works! Becky’s only options now are to be alone forever or to turn straight.

      3. Im so sick of this “consolation prize” bullshit tbh, it’s so highschool

        1. Agreed, it’s giving very purity culture “you can only ever fall in love with one person ever and no one else will ever measure up to the first person you date or have feelings for”. I can definitely say when I dated a boy when I was 12 that was hardly me being in love and the relationships I had after were by no means ‘consolation prizes’ for him. Or for each other for that matter. Like thejeff said below, it makes sense for Dina to have that concern. That doesn’t make it true.

        2. The concept is real. This isn’t just Dina being upset that she wasn’t Becky’s first crush. She’s afraid that Becky’s still in love with Joyce and is just with her to distract herself from that pain. That’s valid. I don’t think it’s true, but it does happen and it sucks when it’s aimed at you.
But a lot of the consolation prize/silver medal talk lately seem to frame that as inevitable in an extreme way. As if, if you’re not the first love, the one and only true love, you’ve no hope of ever being anything more.

    3. Why do you believe not being someone’s very first love makes you a “consolation prize”? Hillary was definitely not mere “consolation” for me after my ex left.

      1. Dina is very aware that she’s Becky’s rebound from Joyce. She said as much to Sarah way back when. Since then she’s either come to terms with it, or avoided thinking about it, and enjoyed being happy in the relationship.

Becky’s breakdown (after discovering Dorothy and Joyce hooked up) was a stark reminder that reopened that wound. Of course Dina’s going to feel hurt by that.

        1. It’s a reasonable concern for Dina to have. That doesn’t mean it’s true.

        2. I mean what else was she supposed to make of “If you want to leave, than leave. I’m the problem, it’s me.”???

Becky knows to be direct with Dina, and so, she was direct?

        3. Hillary picked up the pieces when my ex left. Some might think of that as a “rebound”. I think of it as trading up. Ex wasn’t there when I needed her, she was off with her new conquest. Hillary was there.

Similarly, when Becky needed someone, Joyce wasn’t there for her. Dina was. Becky just doesn’t think she deserves Dina.

        4. Which is why the solution to all of this is for Becky to fix her issues surrounding Joyce.

        5. @NGPZ: Becky was in the middle of a breakdown, thinking she’s not worthy of love from anyone. Of course Dina will leave her. Everyone does. She’s the problem. It’s her.

    4. On god people really took the whole “consolation prize” too seriously.

Is any gf Becky has from now to the end of time a ‘consolation prize’? Is she supposed to stay depressed about Joyce not liking her for the rest of her life?

Dina may end things for real with Becky not for the consolation prize thing, but for hwo she reacted to Joyce being bi, but y’all need to grasp the concept of nuance.

      1. Hey we don’t do that word around here!

    5. Dina’s not a consolation prize if she gets back with Becky. They are great together and I’m strongly rooting for them.
It is understandable, that Becky is a bit shaken by Joice turning out to be gay (at least for Dorothy). It is also understandable, that Becky has a hard time hiding that feeling in front of Dina. But that doesn’t mean that Becky doesn’t want or enjoy her relationship wiht Dina. The comic showed pretty much, that both are unhappy about their splitting up. So why not get back together?

Dina allowing Becky to get back together with her, would add a bit more depth and sincerity to their relationship.

  16. Ah, everything will be right in the world. Good to see these two getting along again

  17. Sometimes DOA can be a little on the nose about having characters say everything out loud, so I really appreciate the character work in this strip. I really like how much is communicated by having Becky reframe things to herself as “Dorothy trying to break up me and Dina and I won’t let her”.

Becky can sometimes have the same problem as Carla and Mayala, where the comic can be very “tell, don’t show” with their personalities. I appreciate how much this strip charactizes Becky and her adversarial nature through word choice and expression. It’s a lot more nuanced and well executed than the times she’s turned to the camera to, as she and Dina once put it, “keep making the subtext text”.

    1. I like “show don’t tell” as much as the next person, but I think this arc has been lacking the kind of exposition that’s really required.

Because… if its this easy to convince Dina and Becky to get back together, WHY WERE THEY BROKEN UP IN THE FIRST PLACE?!

I get that Becky’s heartbreak about Joyce actually being Bi is the central problem, and Dina feeling like a rebound that was only there while Joyce was romantically unavailable to Becky, but, yeah, sometimes you need to fucking Tell instead of Show! It feels like central strips about Becky and/or Dina venting about the situation were dropped somehow, and its just making this arc not land for me.

It’s like… I understand *that* there’s a problem, and even what some aspects of the problem are, but I would like to know the full goddamn problem if its so massively affecting these characters and this relationship that I thoroughly enjoy.

      1. The ease of convincing them seems like the most reasonable part of all of this, TBH.

It’s clear (to me, anwyay) that Dina and Becky DO legitimately care about each other AND that Dina has legitimate grievances with how Becky is carrying on about Joyce’s bi awakening. Because of that legitimate care, it SHOULDN’T be hard to get them to chat about things.

The hard part, which I don’t think anyone’s addressed at all in-strip, is “how do we get Becky to work through her complex about Joyce and go all-in on Dina?” Which is not, necessarily, a thing that gets solved merely by Dina and Becky having further conversation about it.

      2. I dunno, I’m pretty sure they were broken up as a knee-jerk reaction while both of them were hurting and insecure and too shocked to express themselves clearly because neither of them had had literally any time to process.

That’s EXACTLY the kind of thing it should be “this easy” to bounce back from.

  18. I am thrilled that Becky and Dorothy are still friends, and that Becky is taking this so well. I know they’re “enemies,” but I feel like their friendship really is fantastic.
That being said; BECKY, USE THIS ENERGY AND GO TALK TO DINA!!!

  19. All right. This is good.

    I am appeased.

    For NOW.

  20. This strip makes it clear just how beautiful Becky’s new haircut is. I’m love her.

  21. This is the first healthy thing I’ve seen either of these two two bumbleshits do in months.

    1. wow, I get a ten-minute edit window now? rock! 🤘

  22. Aww, I haven’t seen arch-nemeses this wholesome in a while. Kinda gives me Doof/Perry vibes, which is always nice.

    1. My favourite nemeses will always be Kate Beaton’s, but this may be a close second

      http://www.harkavagrant.com/index.php?id=327

  23. “My messiness will be proportionate to my resuming my relationship with Dina.”
“Okay, fine, you scatter the laundry; I’ll empty the trashbasket on the floor.”

  24. I miss the auto gavitars with the little cast members in them. I don’t think I ever used them, but still. They were very nice and often good fun, when you could definitely see the corresponding character commenting what ever was commented. Does that make sense? I am very tired.

    1. Really hope there’s a way to bring them back once everything with the new website is done. I exchanged mine for Teto a while back but I loved grav roulette

      1. in the meantime, please accept Dumb Gravitar Horse Race Test as a viable substitute 🙏🏽

        https://ngpz.dev/

        1. Ah. Maze. Zing. !

I gotta say, that is pretty darn mesmerizing! Joe appeared to be the most intrepid explorer of all, but Ruth pulled off a surprise upset out of nowhere!

    2. It makes total sense, I miss that too. How am I supposed to tell who everyone is now without their comments being avatarred by the DoA character I’ve been associating them with in my mind now for the past however many years??

  25. This is incredibly wholesome i don’t care what anyone says.

  26. I wasn’t sure how to read Becky’s expression at the end of yesterday’s strip so I’m so glad Dorothy read the situation correctly. I think she pulled off a better “c’mon get back together” speech than Joyce did, all in all.

    1. Well Dorothy does want to be a politician after all; I would hope she’s more convincing than Joyce.

  27. Laundry Pile Lives!!

Damn Straight… Joyce’s jacket actually looks good on her, they should swap clothes more

  28. well done ms. keener-brown

  29. After reading this a second time, I think Becky should steal a car and chase Dorothy around the parking lot with it. No injuries or death or maiming or any of that, just a little test of her reflexes.

    1. It should be rear-wheel-drive so she can do some sick donuts in the middle of the pursuit.

  30. I didn’t expect that Dorothy would act silly and play along with Becky’s dumb “Dorothy is my nemesis” thing, and that somehow that would actually make Becky feel better. Now I wonder if Becky and Dina are gonna finally talk with each other and decide if they want to continue dating. I’d be fine with them getting back together or them staying broken up, just as long as they actually communicate with each other.

    1. either way, Professor Brock suggested that lab partners were permanent 👀

  31. There’s little straight about either of yous, Dorobhi.

  32. Aww, that’s somehow really sweet. And it really seems to have helped Becky. Good for them!

  33. Taking “hot mess” literally

  34. *longer sigh*

    1. Come on, tell us how you really feel.

  35. Clearly Joyce and Dorothy should kiss each other as a reward for doing good like this.

  36. You know if Dorothy actually plays along, I would find the nemesis thing endearing.

  37. Dorothy reminding Becky that her relationship with Dina is something worth fighting for is brilliant. And it could actually work. Becky and Dina were never doomed; they just have growing to do. If Becky decides she’s not giving up, and reaffirms her commitment to Dina while acknowledging that she’s still growing into becoming the best partner she can be, the two could come back together stronger than before (and I hope so!).

    1. I don’t, or at least not for a while. The relationship is very uneven, in that Becky gets a lot more support than she seems willing to give, and Becky herself admitted that it’s true Joyce is still her #1 love.

Dina does not deserve having to accept being a consolation prize in hopes that someday Becky will maybe get around to actually being committed *to Dina* without keeping one eye peeled for Joyce’s availability. And I don’t think Becky’s there yet.

      1. When did Becky admit Joyce is still her #1 love?

      2. Joyce was her first love. That’s not the same thing.

  38. O-oh, okay.. guess that solves that then…?

Becky basically just came to the right conclusion on her own, it feels a little bit anti-climactic imo

    1. I assume this won’t be the end of things and Dina and Becky will run into a snag while trying to talk to each other cuz it’d be a real shame to just let everything they’re mutually going through just immediately get resolved by effectively the very next time they see each other.

Like I want them to get back together again but having them patch things up immediately again would feel anti-climactic to me

  39. Aww, it worked. Well done Dotty. Sometimes she really does know how to handle people.
Now go talk to Dina, Becky. Before making things messier.

  40. I’m going to require a formal apology from everyone wigging out yesterday

  41. Dorothy: I slightly regret my choice of strategy

  42. Can confirm that sometimes the answer to conflict is to be as silly as possible

    1. what conflict?

      1. The conflict in the comic. There’s plenty of it.

        1. You should be patient with Hue, they close their eyes and cover their ears everytime Dorothy is on screen so it’s understandable they miss some stuff.

  43. Panel 5 Dorothy hoisted on her own petard

  44. Quoting What is this Feeling multiple times in the alt text isn’t making me ship this less

  45. Dorothy: “Hoist on my own petard!”

Becky “I think you mean Picard.”

Dorothy: “No, see, actually it’s a French word for…”

Becky: “Now, now, who’s the lesbian here?”

    Dorothy: “…what?”

Becky: “Exactly” *tosses more clothes on the floor*

    1. “Hoist with his own petard” is a quote from Hamlet saying that an explosives engineer will often blow himself up, as a metaphor for how your own schemes may be your ironic undoing. It’s similar to “shooting yourself in the foot”. (I did see something about the related French word petardre meaning either gunfire or loud farts, which may have been a joke for Shakespeare’s audience. In that case, “shitting the bed” might be a similar idiom?)

      1. the most dangerous part of that job wasn’t even lighting the fuse — it was going back to RE-light it 👀

  46. It’s commit to the bit above all else, c’mon dotty you should know this
