  1. Huh, new comments interface.

    1. with all the old comments nuked! New Year New Comments Section!

      1. ALL OF THEM???

        1. We’re watching the data import into the new CMS from the old one in real time. If you go back to random older strips, there’s comments but no comic.

        2. So it looks like the comments only get nuked after “Whyfor” (https://www.dumbingofage.com/comic/whyfor/) and the strips before then are preserved. Hopefully the loss of comments will not extend any further.

On the off-chance that the original comment section for this strip doesn’t get archived back in, here’s a Wayback Machine capture of it. (plus an Archive ph backup, for kicks)

        4. Is it really a loss, however?

        5. According to Willis on Bluesky, there was a backup taken several days ago. The comments since that backup was taken are probably only going to be on archive sites now.

Props to RassilonTDavros for adding Wayback Machine and Archive Today links to the comic pages that will be missing their original comments!

      2. Aw man, that’s so sad. As a late reader one of the most fun bits was reading all the community history alongside the comments, despite the occassional flamewar.
Kinda hoping they were still achived somewhere

        1. (oh shit there’s an edit button now that rules)

    2. The homepage looks more like the old site now. (Unless DNS was being DNS again and momentarily brought me to the old server…)

  2. Kinda hope the old comments were saved somewhere. This new interface is cool and seems better than the old system, I like that it gives you a brief window to edit your comments, but it bothers me that it got rid of all the old comments.

    1. looks like old content is still loading, e.g. i clicked Random and got a page with no comic but 300 comments

    2. Hard to blame the guy if it meant hosting like 15 years of comments. I don’t know if the comments section even worked like that, but even if it’s hosted elsewhere, I don’t think many people ever read any comments more than a few weeks old, and even that would be rare enough. Or so my stanky human gut tells me.

      1. Speak for yourself, when I was reading through the archive when I got started on the comic I always read at least a couple comments.

        1. That’s the thing though, how many people are reading through the archive? Way less than are coming for the updates, at least, I’d wager.

  3. The site’s still kinda glitchy for me. I can see the comic but other things look kinda off

    1. I clicked “Reply” and the comment interface smooshed your comment into a tiny column on the left.

      Dina’s right, everything has changed.

Also I forgot how I capitalized my email address so I’ll probably have to play roulette again. Fack!

EDIT: Well it looks like there are no default Gravatars yet, but this edit button is a welcome change! No more tpyos!

  4. Oh, you weren’t kidding with “Changed”!

  5. New Server! In before the lock! Wait, no, different thing.

  6. I will reserve judgment for now since it seems kinda glitchy, but… I can’t find alt text?

  7. Beckysaur breakup so powerful it reshaped reality and made the website anew (also nuked a lot of recent comments it seems)

  8. This new comment interface looks neat. Also love the new navigation buttons!

I also like how the name of the strip the new stuff for the website is implemented is “Changed”.

  9. woah, new site, interesting

also not sure what the poll is even talking about, the typeface in this strip looks the same? or is that somehow an old poll from 2016-ish when the typeface actually changed that’s been pushed to the front page

    1. I think it’s an old poll, unless 4600 people showed up 5 hours before the daily update.

  10. Archives haven’t repopulated yet. Only about a weeks worth of strips so far.

    1. I like the edit button addition

  11. Why yes, everything has, indeed, changed. Feels weird to me, but I’m sure I will adjust as time goes on.

  12. Oh God what in this fresh hell is this? Its so bad on mobile, Jesus Christ. I never open this page on desktop.

  13. My autistic ass is not going to be able to handle this drastic of a UI change

  14. Hm. Tried to insert an edit but I guess my time ran out mid sentence. So that mitigates a bit of the radness of the edit button :/

Anyway I like that the website has updated but the mobile format is so claustrophobic and the strip is so tiny. Also I keep getting closed out of the comments box ,:T. The comment section is center aligned instead of being left aligned and it’s weird. Desktop mode on mobile makes the text too small and the spacing too wide to realistically use either. This is my genuine feedback after the knee jerk reaction. Idk if it’ll be taken into any account but I’m putting it out there

  15. Hey heads up the mobile interface for this site is now crazy clunky. I don’t know what desktop is like yet, but. I might see if something can be done to not make the comic tiny and the buttons huge.

    1. Desktop is very zoomed-in with big text. I usually have this site at 150% so the comic fills the width of my laptop’s display, but now the comment text looks more like 16pt font at that size.
Just to add a couple vertical mobile bug reports:
Nested comments get smooshed into a tiny column once you get three or four deep. The edges of the comic get cut off when you’re on the individual strip’s page (even if you pinch-zoom out), but it’s fine on the homepage. “Save my name and email” doesn’t appear to be working yet.

  16. Wow new comments interface huh?

What? There aint no way to link a website to your name no more????

    Boooooooooooo! :(

“Everything has changed ” is RIGHT XD

    1. At least the clock is correct now?

      1. I mean it’s as correct as it can realistically be if that what ya mean

        ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

        1. Alongcameaspider

Willis has stated that the server clock should be fixed and the reason he put off getting it fixed was this change was in the works

Guess we’ll find out in about 5 hours

    2. I’m fine with not having website links in my comment name. I didn’t put any links to my social media in my name in the old comments and people still could find me pretty easily anyway.

  17. Farewell, yellow navigation buttons. You’re immortalized in that one Shortpacked! strip with the fake out early ending, at least.

  18. *tasteful sip of tea*
    *ahem*
    I HATE CHANGE
thank you for coming to my TED talk, a talk where I have mostly been drinking tea onstage in silence before that one outburst (and this one closing line).

  19. Oh hi, the site is back!

  20. testing something really quick!

    1. Oh good, html still works. AND god this reply box completely scrunches the comment I’m replying to. First one is awesome to know, second one is icky. Glad the edit is only for a few minutes, no typos and none of that specific kind of troll.

      1. Don’t trust the edit function…..but I do actually appreciate it exists now.

        1. reeeeally wish the timer would pause when youre actually writing your edit though, instead of booting you out mid sentence if youre not quick enough

  21. Joe, my dude, what the heck even is that shirt and where do I buy one?

  22. I lived enough to see this website responsive.

  23. *plays Ambrosia’s “How Much I Feel” on the hacked Muzak*

    1. Awe smash!
      Welcome back (for now?) Stephen!
I originally chose War’s “Why Can’t We Be Friends”, but this works too! ^-^

  24. Holy shit! Don’t trust the website?!

  25. Holy shit! There’s a new dialogue typeface??? All hail Walkyfont 2.5!

…RIP the randomly-assigned-DoA-character Gravatar system. We shall miss thee…

    1. oh god it’s auto-changing my two spaces after a period to one space, nooooo

  26. Honestly kinda hate the new UI, had to put it on desktop move judt to see most comments on my phone.

  27. Great new UI, Mx. Willis

    1. And there’s an edit function! Be still my heart.

  28. Clever, changing the UI on the same day the strip title is Change. Bit weird to do comments now

  29. Oh wow Joe still exists? I though he ceased being a real boy once his purpose as a stepping stone, a delivery man for bringing Joyce into Dorothy’s arms was complete where he would then fade away into irrelevance.

  30. Goddammit Willis this is the second time your site caused my system to freeze!

    1. The system. Is down. The system. Is down. The system. System. System system system system

  31. Huh. The graphic user interface is different.

  32. Oop new comments eh. Then I return to re-iterate im glad these two are hanging out about Relationship Ground Zero. I find them very charming.

  33. Testing the editing…

  34. Testing the editing…ah. I see it now.

  35. Checking out the new interface here while wondering whether or not Gravatar accounts are still in use…

also, didn’t realize that Joe & Dina interacting was something I was going to particularly want before my reaction to seeing them here.

  36. Genuinely really excited to see where this conversation goes. These two have a really good dynamic that’s fun to read and I think it’ll be great to see them bounce off each other in their current situations.

  37. Let the bonding commence
