They’re being so cute. Can’t wait for people to try to spin this as being toxic because Joyce is putting Dorothy in an imaginary device and that’s actually really bad because it shows that one day she’s going to cage Dorothy up for real and be an abusive gf or something.
Not toxic, but as a recent and strong Doyce convert, I am a bit nervous. They’re kind of talking past each other, here. Dorothy is looking into becoming more of an activist, while Joyce still wants cuddles and honeymooning and fuck-the-worlding.
Now, wanting different things? Totally fine; couples can thrive in such a fashion. But failing to communicate and listen to one another? Potentially disastrous.
AK
Joyce is, historically, pretty bad at listening when she decides something should go a certain way. She was very bad at listening to Joe basically every time he tried to pump the brakes too, not to mention all the times she’s done it at her friends (and recently also Raidah). It’s. A growth area she notably needs to work on, and has done for a while.
I’ve been on reddit, Dot. People still claim the relationship is toxic because Dorothy cares for her partners, which is of course a problem with Joyce but never was for Walky (some in these comments kind of do it too)
This comment? This comment is shadow boxing?
.
Come on, Dot. Even if you just fully ignore everything outside of the comment section, people have been calling Dorothy Joyce’s mother [figure] and claiming the ship has a toxic power dynamic since………. at least the storyline where Dorothy nudged her into buying glasses.
.
It’s been such a relentless aspect of the comment section that Mx. Willis recently addresses it directly by telling a long-time commenter that no, that supposed power imbalance was not an interpretation of the text to which they personally subscribe, and therefore it would not get addressed by the comic.
.
Like. Come on now.
No one said anything about “wanting conflict to happen”.
.
I genuinely do not understand the responses this comment is getting, are yall just fully memory-holing literal years of commenters complaining that Dorothy has a toxic relationship with Joyce because she’s a mom friend or what.
flake
there might not be a huge overlap between the doyce grumps in this comment section that group of folks calling the friendship toxic specifically. I’m just grumpy, not judging specifically. don’t think it’s legal to ship billifer/ruth and complain about toxicity haha. mostly my gripe has been “want more consequences and drama, less sap”
At least from what I saw here, the only conclusions the hate containment threat usually jumped to was “doyce is all perfect they’ll never see consequences and nobody seems to care”. which sure, hopefully is incorrect, but not quite as silly as the straw man in the comment…
bold of you to think joyce has enough executive function to have bought one already. girl is going to use a fuck ass belt for the first collar, as sappho intended.
Am I alone in that I want to see way more Bulmeria activism and consequences? Threats of expulsion, police activity, and even national attention as Robyn realizes the Democrat Congressman supports Bulmerian bombings due to Ruttech money?
Well nothing because that would require it to be more than shallow set dressing which Willis is clearly not willing to commit to. The whole point of giving it the stupid name is not to date the comic by directly referencing Israel/Palestine despite the fact that it’s one of the most evergreen geopolitical issues in history.
I mean, enough people that Willis had to go on socials in order to apologize for it.
Gotthammer
Did they ever actually apologise though?
I saw them lamenting how they hadn’t used their Muslim characters, but that is not “I am sorry for using a real world genocide as a wedding backdrop.”
I may have missed it of course, but I dont recall ever seeing them bring up or respond to the specific criticism of using the real IU protest, or even mention Palestine at all.
Joyce has gotten so used to overcoming obstacles in the last six months or so that this is partly what I’m concerned about: even her relationship was forged in a “heroically gay” display that I feel like she thinks she needs to have conquered or won something to get being happy.
I’m hoping it eventually settles into something more calm and not something that needs tales of passion and tear gas fireworks to sustain.
So Sal saw her boyfriend get upset and storm off, walked over to the bowling alley, said eight sentences, then left again.
She made dumb and dumber look sad for one panel when she brought up them being shitty people but then it slid off their brains and the next scene is them being all lovey dovey.
We learned nothing about Asma as a person, Danny’s rightful upset was treated like a joke, Walky and Dina talk for one strip before he leaves… so what was the point of any of it? The narrative is a mess and any plot that isn’t Joyce and Dorothy being flirty gets killed instantly.
And we’re almost six months since Joyce said she was going to talk to Joe. Nothing is happening but everything takes forever.
Because I’ve been reading since day 1 and one utterly atrocious arc doesn’t make me drop something I’ve enjoyed that long.
Because if this comic is going to engage with weighty topics like racism, abuse, misogyny, and genocide its readership should also be able to engage with the sort of critiques any other piece of fiction dealing with those topics receives.
Or, I’m just discussing it like I would any other piece of fiction.
Sorry you can’t seem to understand the concept of talking about something (including something you’ve enjoyed for years) in anything but positive terms.
Li
There are other options, though, if reading is currently a miserable experience. Plenty of readers have spoken about realizing that they weren’t enjoying the comic, taking a long break, then coming back and being able to get that part of the comic over in one long reading session and just being much happier with the whole experience that way.
.
Like, not trying to speak for Thing 2, but I am definitely not suggesting anyone quit the comic forever. And folks who are enjoying the hate-reading experience — more power to them!
.
But I do think the part where this comic updates once a day is really exacerbating the problems some readers have with the current state of affairs, and that coming back to check in every few months rather than sticking it out might be a lot less… awful, for those readers?
flake
for me personally refreshing the comic before bed is kinda a ritual. I don’t have any other daily comics. If the strip itself doesn’t get me dopamine, i usually find it in the comments so it kinda works out for me either way
That’s perfectly in line with Sal though. She does her own thing and she feels Walky is capable enough of handling his own drama on his own. Nor is she particularly invested in sticking her nose in other people’s problems in the first place. She’s only going to intervene if the situation is desperate enough to need it or she owes a favor.
Its bad writing to have a character ignore her boyfriend, walk over to another location, say a couple of apparently inconsequential lines then vanish without further explanation. It seems far more out of character for Sal to bother with any of that.
Did she talk to Danny after he got upset? If so, why didn’t we see it? If not, how does Danny feel about his girlfriend leaving him to go hang out with his people he was literally just upset over?
Did Danny continue his Talk with Joe, or was it all dropped? If it was dropped was there awkwardness as they don’t say anything, did Danny say he was still mad at Dorothy for the whole “how often do you cheat” thing but he’s going to trust Joe and not get on his case?
What happened after Sal told Dorothy and Joyce they were shitty people? Did they look sad for a moment then Sal wandered off wothout further discussion? Because that’s what the comic says happened. Did her words have any effect on them beyond that moment? Seemingly not. So what was the point of including it?
etc etc etc
Risky
This is getting Wild. Your descriptions of what Sal did seem to change between comments. Are you talking about different times? Do you think it would be in character for Sal to not go spend time with other people because her boyfriend thinks they are setting a poor standard for bisexuals?
Are you talking about Danny and Joe continuing their conversation later? Which we don’t see? Are you suggesting the comic should include every possible conversation so we don’t think people are talking when they aren’t on panel?
When did Sal tell Dorothy and Joyce they were shitty people? Definitely not at the bowling alley. Why did you interpret what she said that way? Tell us about your mother.
Gotthammer
@risky
Sal saw Danny get upset over Joyce and Dorothy. She then either left without talking to Danny, or we didn’t see her conversation with him. And yes, I think either case is bad writing as seeing other character’s conversations is good. It also makes Sal look like an asshole if she just left.
.
I think it would be more in character for her to follow Danny and talk to him, rather than go hang with two people she doesn’t really know, especially when their actions are what triggered his being upset.
.
Even if she did still go hang with them, we should see that reasoning. I don’t see how I have been inconsistent on any of that.
.
Yes, I think it is bad writing that any continuation of Danny and Joe’s conversation was not shown. For an arc that was heralded as bringing drama for relationship sickos, these are the conversations we should be seeing. Also it would be good character work to have Joe explain his motivations to someone he trusts and who will challenge him (Danny), rather than Rachel who is barely a character or Joyce herself who just brushes him off repeatedly.
.
Her saying Danny’s super pissed at them is implicitly imparting his opinion – that they are bad people – so I interpret that as her saying “you suck ass.” You don’t have to agree, but resorting to personal attacks makes you look like you don’t understand how to actually have a discussion about it.
.
Also, on that topic, your dollar store Booster impressions is rather ironic – both for you talking about the read before posting rules (3 & 11 seem relevant here), and my comment above that a story involving serious topics deserves serious discussion. Apparently both were too hard for you.
.
Rather than just questioning my opinion, how about you say why you disagree and provide some textual / structural analysis to back it up?
Just because it says not to do something in the Read Before Posting doesn’t mean you can’t do it anyway. But maybe don’t. Be like Willis, if you have to hatefuck do it on Bsky.
I mean seriously what rule is their against critique? Please quote it, I’m rather interested.

I kinda hope these two don’t get involved in a lot of future activism for a while, at least not until they learn more about protest strategies and how not to potentially make things worse for other protesters. Also if we do see more protest storylines, perhaps they should not be mostly used as a background for two women characters to kiss.
I kind of want to see them get involved, Dorothy decide she’s most qualified to be in charge, and then be rejected. I think Dorothy’s only started her maturing, and as Earth shattering as the first realization was (that wanting to be president is not a great goal), she still hasn’t really gotten to the meat of it.
Agree about the “bisexual lighting chemical weapon” sort of thing.
You know everyone else is calling it kinda cute but I’m more getting a bit of red flags at Joyce’s brain seeing the relationship as “sex kissing and cuddling 24/7” Not really a solid basis for a sturdy relationship you know?
The only healthy relationship Joyce ever had was with Joe, because Joe wasn’t willing to let his hormones make him an awful person.
Not to infantalize Joyce, but she rides emotional highs. She needs somebody to ‘hold her leash’ until she has the maturity to self-regulate. Somebody to say “NO” when Joyce tries to push selfish and cruel behavior for her own satisfaction. And so far, Dorothy has shown herself woefully unwilling to do it.
Damn this comics cute. It reminds me of the times when Joyce and joe climbed awkwardly over each other repeatedly, or when joyce asked him to lay on her, or when joyce asked him to kinda crush her into a wall for a while, or when she directly asked him to put his hands on her boobs while they cuddled more after like 10 hours of cuddling.
Heck, I’d even say this is a very established pattern, let alone in a relationship that’s only been ongoing for like. A day or two, that came with a huge removal of intimacy barriers around a very long term emotion!
…Genuinely, and sincerely, i cannot think of much different here then then other then “its joyce with a girl now, and she kissed the girl slightly before ending a relationship instead of after”.
Well! On the bright side. I might not understand, but I’m sure enjoying the webcomic I read every day. It’s cute and I like it a lot.
