  1. For Sal, she’s a real “rebel without a cause.”
Where are some Martians to fight when ya need ’em?

    1. That’s “Poor Sall”. Stupid comment page timed out on me again, so it won’t let me edit. :/

    2. Sal had a cause. Her mother did everything she could to quash it. Now Sal continues to be a rebel anyway out of spite, to show that taking away a rebel’s cause won’t be rewarded with now hollow and meaningless “good” behavior.

    3. She’s been at it so long that she has no idea who she is without it, and filling that void scares her.

  2. While I approve of the necessity I also recognize this isn’t going to well. Sal needs time to think, but I’m not sure wandering around at night is the best option.

Clearly she should get her motorcycle back and go for a ride.

    1. What are the odds that Sal gets arrested, or assaulted, while going for a walk? Perhaps both of those by the same people.

  3. Aw, she left Danny alone? That’s sad and somewhat concerning.

Also, Sal, if you want to come across as dangerous, maybe don’t use the word ‘tush.’

    1. Just exactly what I was thinking – Sal never seemed *dangerous* dangerous to me but her rebel-with-maybe-a-cause shtick is perhaps undermined by using one of the most old lady-ish terms for the human ass imaginable. “Don’t look now, Granny Sal, but someone’s a’ starin’ at yer keister.” “Not my keister! My fanny? My tush?! Gosh golly, noooo”

    2. Also maybe don’t put on a hairnet to … well, anything.

  4. Sal is right, Joyce SHOULD get a dorothy tatoo on her tush. I’m sure she’ll never regret it. Especially when Dorothy has to kiss herself heeheheheh

  5. I’d hate it, but it’d be kind of funny if Doyce sinks literally every other ship in the story

    1. … okay how is Doyce going to sink Ethan/Asher or Lucy/Jacob, now I’m intrigued.

      1. Well, you can see how it’s unbalanced Sal, and after Sal cheats on Danny with Asher, it all cascades out of control from there.

      2. Oh, that’s easy. Sal lashes out post break-up, tells Ethan something about Asher that makes him break it off. Asher’s family try to tie up loose ends, Jacob ends up collateral.

Now, Mandy/Sierra/Grace and Galasso/Pamela, those are the tricky ones

        1. Mandy, Sierra and Grace get into a months long argument about whether Joyce and Dorothy’s relationship is cute, toxic, or just boring. The argument flares up every time one of them is reminded that Joyce exists. They split up. They draw lines across the building in a very sitcom-y way to avoid fighting, but it doesn’t help. Their squabbling continues until the end of the comic.

    2. and then, the League of “EVIL” Exes will come to fruition! the prophecy will unfold XD

    3. I’d take the tradeoff if Mary and Peter also break up in the worst way possible

    4. It’s bound to happen. so long as their conversations are all about convincing themselves/us how great Doyce is.

  6. A leather jacket that Dorothy picked out. I think that makes it not count.

  7. I, too, have insomnia, but unlike Sal’s mine is not caused by depression.

  8. The thing about this is that Sal is clearly having another of her bouts of insecurity and Danny understands her well enough to know to let her have a bit of space with the confidence that she’ll come back before long. People prophesying doom for these two are jumping the gun. They’ve got the sauce.

    1. Nice insights, because I was definitely wondering why Sal cared about any of that at all.

      1. I suspect this particular outburst is a contrivance to get Sal into a new scene with someone else who’s actually been focused on this arc because it’s otherwise kinda come out of nowhere.

        1. I suspect you’re right Dot. It’s an odd beat, unless it’s in service of setting something up. It’s honestly a bit odd even with that.

I wonder if this is one of the added strips, or one finished a year ago.

    2. For the record I think these two are gonna be okay, least for a while

My doomsaying is less serious prediction and more just suggesting that it would be funny

  9. Poor Sal. Had an identity thrust upon her and then reclaimed it and now she’s outgrowing it and doesn’t know how to cope.

  10. Sal, I’m very much not a dangerous person and I’m usually in bed around 4. I’m sorry.

  11. As somebody with 20+ tattoos, I can confirm that we’re not a particularly threatening bunch. That’s what the tattoos are for.

  12. “How can I strike fear into the hearts of ma enemies?”
“You don’t have any real enemies. You just like to pretend you do to feel edgy”
    “Do systems count?”
    “No”
    “Damn”

  13. All joking aside, I would love to see a “___ gets their first tattoo” arc because there’s no way in hell any of these dorks would be normal about it

    1. Joyce had trouble with the air puff machine when she was getting her eyes checked. Would she be able to handle getting tattooed?

      1. In fairness to Joyce the puff-of-air machine is kind of awful.

Thirty years ago I had a glaucoma test that did not involve the puff-of-air machine and it was as though angels had descended from the heavens. Never seen one in any other optometrist’s office.

      2. well, the air puff machine feels wierd. Like what other chance do you have to feel an air puff your eyeball? Pain might not feel wierd. If she can work through it in her head before hand she may be able to brace for the stimulation. Or get super drunk and wake up with the stamp.

  14. I am now wondering what this Sal would think of Alternate Dorothy kicking her ass.

    https://www.shortpacked.com/comic/i-don39t-know-how-to-explain

    1. That’s Joyce in the linked strip, isn’t it?

      1. Yes, though technically it’s an alternate alternate Joyce, more Avengers/Justice League than SEMME.

  15. Sal, you don’t have to try to be “dangerous”. Especially since in American society, being perceived as dangerous tends to result in you being a lot more likely to be arrested or worse by the police.

    1. Sure, but consider the context of it in her life. It was something that she owned, something she had a bit of control over, it became a part of her identity that she could embrace.

Given all the shit that’s happened to her and those she loves, I can’t exactly look down on her for being a little stubborn about putting that aside.

    2. Also I think I can confidently say that a lot more characters in this comic are way more “dangerous” than Joyce and Dorothy have been lately.

    3. Oh, being perceived as dangerous doesnt necessarily increase your chances to get incarcerated.
Be a gun-totin-beer-guzzling redneck wife beater? The cops will very commonly give you quite a wide berth.
      There´s the melanine thing, though…..

  16. Careful Sal your predictions have been very accurate late…mostly about your brothers love life but still.

Who wants to bet Joyce and Dorothy just get each other’s names tattoo on each other.

  17. Ahhh, that feels like a tough anxiety to solve in a healthy way. Sorry Sal, I have some of those too.

  18. I’m not sure what Sal’s desiring here. I suppose it’s in character and relatable for her to be insecure. To me it just looks like she’s possibly jealous of the most superficial aspects of being “dangerous” whatever that actually means to her and of course there’s no way she’d have any real context behind why Joyce seems so much cooler or more dangerous now. Sal’s really mistranslated being dangerous with what is actually being a hot mess. Maybe season 1 Sal would enjoy that but the truth is she’s just in a much better place and developed to be more emotionally stable and open, although maybe not as much as I think. She is passing up cuddling a wonder bread boy to wander the halls for no reason. What a fumble.

    1. I think it’s fair to say that, as much as she’s had a price to pay for being the less-accepted Walkerton sibling, Sal has internalized some things that she’s having trouble reconciling with the fact that what she likes romantically is very, very basic. Even traditional. Which there’s really nothing wrong with, but combining that with her no longer using her motorcycle (out of perfectly legit reasons regarding her mixed feelings with her parents bribing her) she’s in a pretty transitional self-image and might worry about losing her edge.

  19. You can still drive a motorcycle, Sal. Last I checked Joyce can’t drive AT ALL. So you got that over her.

It saddens me that Sal finally gets acceptance and stability of her peers after years of being the black sheep of the family and is super uncomfortable that she’s found happiness. She’s been nothing but supportive to all of her friends. She even earned the trust of the girl who LITERALLY tried to kill her in vengeance less than three months ago. She’s earned her peace and milquetoast boyfriend. Can’t she enjoy her happy ending like Joyce is doing?

      1. That said, I’m in complete agreement with the sentiment of your comment. Poor Sal has really been through it.

  20. Sal having her midlife crises early

  21. nice job on the scroling-in-the-dark lighting btw looks cool

  22. i would consider the cheatring part ‘inconsiderate’, not dangerous

wonder what sal will do lol

  23. I’ve been here.
For once things are going ok for Sal. Her grades are probably decent. She has an intimate partner who likes as she is as a person and not as an idea or trophy. The only thing missing is her hog.
When you’re normal is absolute chaos, peace feels strange when it arrives. Hopefully she won’t do what I did and sabotage it before getting a chance to feel safe in it.

  24. The besties eternal tramp stamp is honestly a sick design considering it’s Danny and Joe riding a dragon

  25. Sal’s having an identity crisis. Poor lass.

”Am I still cool?”. Sadly Danny is deeply uncool, and can’t help.

    1. Maybe he can help by being a good egg and playing his ukulele. She will reappreaciate the difference.

  26. Ah, I appear to have spoken too soon in my comment yesterday. I guess I accidentally predicted her going on a midnight adventure to feel dangerous by prematurely saying it was pretty healthy of her to talk with Danny about her feeling instead of doing specifically that. In retrospect, I should have known that was the secret hint telling us she was ABSOLUTELY about to do that. :P Which, as a reader, I can’t say I mind, just because I want to see what she’s gonna get up to. Maybe she’ll find Jennifer to get Amazi-Girl’s suit back to keep the heat off of Amber and step in as her substitute.

  27. …goshdangit Sal

  28. Malaya was right, after all

  29. Sal you spent time punching people at night and just saved a superhero from a gunshot wound
    And you have a bike
Joyce is not more dangerous than you

  30. Trying to think of the worst person she could encounter next and trying to think which is worse, Malaya or the police

(Yes I know it’s police but Malaya would love to see Sal doing stuff to protect her rep)

  31. So sad, Danny’s (glorious) time as “safe nerd used by hottie for rebound recovery” is coming to an end.

    1. I don’t think that’s what this is.

  32. Sal gonna have to redefine herself soon. Doesn’t have to stick to being the dangerous one. She doesn’t enjoy that anyway. Gonna have to, you know, come of age.
*nervously looks at the name of the comic*
