Unfortunately, a lot of Americans basically have to teach themselves if they want to even be mildly proficient in reading or writing. 10th-grade textbooks here are written as though the reader has a 6th- or 7th-grade reading level. We even fail at our own system for determining reading level. What the hell America.
I have Issues with this statement. The assumption that learning materials should always meet or push the educational boundary of those learning from them is, simply put, bad. Instructions to construct a table from IKEA are written to be as simple as functionally possible, so that anyone can learn it. Instructions to build a mathematical equation (or anything else) should be the same: simple enough to be understood by anyone educated to the point of understanding the simplest means of explaining it. Or, to put it more simply, don’t make the student work harder than they need to to learn. Learning should be fun, not tedious.
Obfuscative jargon for sesquipedalian loquaciousness’ sake is downright disingenuous. “I’m trying to teach you, but you’re not smart enough to understand me.” Nothing burns away a student’s desire to learn as fast as being told you’re too stupid to learn something.

I have some bad news for you: at every level, learning math requires practice, just as mastery of any other technical skill does. Unless you’re doomed to be a mathematician, the odds are very good that you’ll find that practice tedious — but your teacher or professor will look at you with a distinct lack of sympathy and say “Sorry you feel that way. Now get back to work.”

That was a one strip gag. Ethan/Danny was a whole mini-storyline that was not only serious, but also crazy-whacked-out adorbz. Even if they don’t ultimately end up together, there’s clearly at least going to be some kind of romantical interaction there.

I think you might be misunderstanding the ALT text.
Wikipedia’s article on the false dilemma (also called false dichotomy, or — most relevantly — the fallacy of false choice) just refers to the fact that Danny is saying, “I can’t be GAY, because I’m pretty sure I LIKE GIRLS. I need to reassert my HETEROSEXUALITY,” and failing to realize that there’s a third option.
It doesn’t necessarily mean that hooking up with Amazi-Girl is a mistake right now, except in as much as that would be a bad idea under even ideal circumstances with Amber’s current emotional high and how they left things and Danny’s own emotional state.

I can see it now. Danny is captured by the Whiteboard Ding-Dong Bandit. He is held captive in Ding-Dong jail for days, until he can finally send a message out to his blue and gold savior, Amazi-Girl. She and the Bandit do battle, the Bandit armed with a Vibe-saber, and Amazi-Girl using only her wits and awesome badassitude. Amazi-Girl is victorious, and Danny is freed. You say that like Danny has been subjected to enough hatred and trauma to have a happy ending. That sort of realization wont happen overnight. It will probably take at least a week of in-comic time, and that means like a year of updates.

Don’t feel bad about the gaffes. I just got into it today even though it seems to have been going on all week. Most of what I’ve posted so far has been practice with the HTML tags under the guise of inane bullshit actual conversation.

Well, you’re right, on multiple levels. It looks to Danny like he has to choose between liking girls and liking boys, but he doesn’t have to (nor does he get to).
I really didn’t want Danny/Ethan to happen (because of Amber). But at least peaple are starting to hate Danny less. I aways think that everione hating him was kinda unfair
Agreed. Danny/Ethan happening will completely break Amber, and she’s already had more than her fair share of bad stuff happen to her. If Danny/Ethan happens I really hope it is after Amber moves on to someone else, and not yet another guy leaving her because they prefer a dude over her.
I’m kind of against the whole Ethan/Danny thing, not because of Amber, but because I’m not so sure that it would be best for Ethan. Remember, Ethan had complained before about how his being gay cost him everything… I think the best thing would be for him and Danny to become best friends, for it to be revealed that Ethan is gay, and for Danny to say “so? You’re still a friend”. It would show to Ethan that he can be gay and not let that override everything in his life.
But then, that’s what I think is best for the character, not necessarily for the story line or the humor. For those I will leave things in the author’s very capable hands.
One other thing… are we really so sure Amber would be broken by Danny being bisexual? Remember, Amber did have a dream about being with 2 guys, including a comment about “sure, go ahead and pay attention to each other”.
Having a boyfriend would be good for Ethan… but that wouldn’t show him that there’s more to life than sexuality (be it gay or straight).
He needs both a boy friend and platonic friends. I just think platonic (and accepting) friends are more critical. (Plus with his looks he would probably have no problem finding a partner, once he accepts his sexuality.)
I agree he needs platonic friends too, but I think it’d also be good to have a boyfriend so he can see that the world isn’t going to fall apart because he’s gay. He’s got a lot of angst regarding his sexuality, and I think a better way to approach his problem would be to realize you don’t lose things because you’re gay, you lose things because people are homophobic. I’d like to see him pursue a relationship with a guy because this is obviously something that means a lot to him and he needs to finally come to terms with the fact that he can’t just pretend he can get over it anymore.
In all honesty, his way of trying to find a life beyond sexuality ended him up with Joyce. He could stand to embrace it.

I never hated Danny. I thought maybe he was a little boring. His cluelessness was a little annoying. But this storyline is about him clueing himself in on himself, so maybe that’s why it makes people want to root for him?

Joyce had another crazy sex dream, woke up earlier than her usual early time and went to ask her best friend and known sinner, Dorothy, about sexy feelings. But Dorothy was already gone. Frustrated with her conflicting desires for Ethan and for God she grabbed the marker and drew a penis, as a small emotional outlet, hoping to feel some companionship with those around her who are so obsessed with the male member. She then went to erase it, but only then realised the marker was of the permanent kind. PANIC!
Flashback to Mike. Mike is an asshole. So he replaced some makers with permanent ones. Because he’s an asshole.
Back to Joyce, sobering from the crime she has just committed. No one can know what she has done, and so she rushes a cover up. She then went to each door in the hall, drawing a dingdong, each one growing more elaborate, finishing on her own door as so she would not be the only one without a door peener. She then snuck back into her room and went back to bed, to wait to discover it with everyone else later, but for everyone to just erase them on move on.
Unfortunately she went a bit other the top with her fake outrage and drew the attention of Amazi-Girl. Joyce had begun to feel bad, realising that an innocent may take the fall for her crime. She became very defensive when Dorothy’s name was even said. And even when Mike was brought up as a suspect, she was hesitant to bring up his obvious jerkiness. She even had to force out compliments for Amazi-Girl when everyone else was gushing over her.
So we have motive, means, opportunity, and a clear trail of guilt. A crime of passion? Maybe. But a crime none the less.
So who is at fault here? Joyce? Mike? Joyce. It is Joyce. Mike put the permanent marker there, but Joyce drew a whole bunch of wieners rather than just get some nail polish remover or something. Or maybe she drew them all before she realised it was permanent and it was too late to remove them all. Or maybe Mike did it because it was funny. Or like, Raidah, for some reason? Who knows?
I never really entertained the idea that it was Joyce, but she does want to emulate Sal and has tried recently to be a bad-ass . . . Nah, I still say that it’s SYDNEY YUS!
Okay. I’m definitely not a shipper or a yaoi lover so this went way above my head. I thought Danny was embarassed because he was realizing Ethan was gay, but… it’s the other way around I guess.
So is Dany gay? Bi? Does he really have feelings for Ethan? He sure didn’t blush like a schoolgirl like this when he was with Amazigirl…

Other commenters have said similar things. I am personally torn about that dynamic, but there are some plus sides to it. Danny would be good for Amber because, let’s face it, Amber needs help. Helping Amber will help Danny’s sense of confidence, hopefully. Ethan will hopefully help Danny be less self-deprecating, and Ethan could really benefit from having a boyfriend and have something other than shame and embarrassment associated with being gay. Now the question is: can Ethan and Amber share?
True I had forgotten about his reaction to Amber claiming to be his girlfriend when he was dating Amazagirl.
But then there’s this weird part of me reasoning out the definition of a polyamory relationship, the fact that he didn’t see Amber as anything but a friend whilst he had a girlfriend who so happened to be said friend. It’s like a part of me agrees that he is faithful moreso than monogamous
But really it just sorta feels like Danny would just be a medium for Ethan and Amber providing for them what they need, but would they really be able to provide for him what he is in need of or would he find it in being with them? Ugh damn my mind.
Now I say that a part of me is coming up with these reasons, I am not shipping this or trying to force it in any way. Far too many things that I’ve enjoyed have been sullied by people shipping impossible and illogical pairings based upon viewers imagined situations such as a sexual tension that isn’t there just because they bumped into one another.
Ethan would be able to provide Danny with what he needs, much more so than Amber. Ethan is a person who primarily sees the good in people, tells them, and offers words of encouragement. Danny’s at a point where he doesn’t know who he is or his own strengths, and he doubts himself constantly. It’s why he clung to Dorothy, and is doing largely the same thing with Amber. Ethan’s the kind of person who would help Danny build his own strengths, in a way that neither Dorothy or Amber could do.
And all that leaves is Joyce to be completely heartbroken if and whenever she found out about it. Granted I really don’t agree with what their relationship is built upon, but still, Joyce is going to take it pretty hard.
They couldn’t share Mike in the Short Packed Universe….maybe here would be different since they do love one another as well? That actually….it might work. That is always my go to answer when you have a pretty balanced love triangle with affection on all sides.
The dry erase marker is the dog that didn’t bark. Mike took someone’s dry erase marker and replaced it with a non-erasable one. He didn’t draw them, but he’s the reason they are in permanent marker. Trusting that DYW isn’t just dropping a red herring there.
Well, there’s gonna be a male on male Slipshine. Whether or not it’s Danny is another story. We know Danny likes Ethan, but maybe Ethan doesn’t like him back (Unlikely, but Ethan’s only said that Danny’s attractive, but not that he was attracted to Danny).

Agreed. Danny/Ethan happening will completely break Amber, and she’s already had more than her fair share of bad stuff happen to her. If Danny/Ethan happens I really hope it is after Amber moves on to someone else, and not yet another guy leaving her because they prefer a dude over her.
I’m kind of against the whole Ethan/Danny thing, not because of Amber, but because I’m not so sure that it would be best for Ethan. Remember, Ethan had complained before about how his being gay cost him everything… I think the best thing would be for him and Danny to become best friends, for it to be revealed that Ethan is gay, and for Danny to say “so? You’re still a friend”. It would show to Ethan that he can be gay and not let that override everything in his life.
But then, that’s what I think is best for the character, not necessarily for the story line or the humor. For those I will leave things in the author’s very capable hands.
One other thing… are we really so sure Amber would be broken by Danny being bisexual? Remember, Amber did have a dream about being with 2 guys, including a comment about “sure, go ahead and pay attention to each other”.

Having a boyfriend would be good for Ethan… but that wouldn’t show him that there’s more to life than sexuality (be it gay or straight).
He needs both a boy friend and platonic friends. I just think platonic (and accepting) friends are more critical. (Plus with his looks he would probably have no problem finding a partner, once he accepts his sexuality.)
I agree he needs platonic friends too, but I think it’d also be good to have a boyfriend so he can see that the world isn’t going to fall apart because he’s gay. He’s got a lot of angst regarding his sexuality, and I think a better way to approach his problem would be to realize you don’t lose things because you’re gay, you lose things because people are homophobic. I’d like to see him pursue a relationship with a guy because this is obviously something that means a lot to him and he needs to finally come to terms with the fact that he can’t just pretend he can get over it anymore.
In all honesty, his way of trying to find a life beyond sexuality ended him up with Joyce. He could stand to embrace it.

I never hated Danny. I thought maybe he was a little boring. His cluelessness was a little annoying. But this storyline is about him clueing himself in on himself, so maybe that’s why it makes people want to root for him?
So there’s like zero chance Danny is actually getting laid, right?
Danny has options, Amazi-Girl on the other hand is in the bad position.
I feel like these last weeks have just been a ever escalating string of wonderful faces.

It was Joyce.
Joyce had another crazy sex dream, woke up earlier than her usual early time and went to ask her best friend and known sinner, Dorothy, about sexy feelings. But Dorothy was already gone. Frustrated with her conflicting desires for Ethan and for God she grabbed the marker and drew a penis, as a small emotional outlet, hoping to feel some companionship with those around her who are so obsessed with the male member. She then went to erase it, but only then realised the marker was of the permanent kind. PANIC!
Flashback to Mike. Mike is an asshole. So he replaced some makers with permanent ones. Because he’s an asshole.
Back to Joyce, sobering from the crime she has just committed. No one can know what she has done, and so she rushes a cover up. She then went to each door in the hall, drawing a dingdong, each one growing more elaborate, finishing on her own door as so she would not be the only one without a door peener. She then snuck back into her room and went back to bed, to wait to discover it with everyone else later, but for everyone to just erase them on move on.
Unfortunately she went a bit other the top with her fake outrage and drew the attention of Amazi-Girl. Joyce had begun to feel bad, realising that an innocent may take the fall for her crime. She became very defensive when Dorothy’s name was even said. And even when Mike was brought up as a suspect, she was hesitant to bring up his obvious jerkiness. She even had to force out compliments for Amazi-Girl when everyone else was gushing over her.
So we have motive, means, opportunity, and a clear trail of guilt. A crime of passion? Maybe. But a crime none the less.
So who is at fault here? Joyce? Mike? Joyce. It is Joyce. Mike put the permanent marker there, but Joyce drew a whole bunch of wieners rather than just get some nail polish remover or something. Or maybe she drew them all before she realised it was permanent and it was too late to remove them all. Or maybe Mike did it because it was funny. Or like, Raidah, for some reason? Who knows?

I called that on like the first or second day of the storyline. Pretty sure it was Joyce.

I never really entertained the idea that it was Joyce, but she does want to emulate Sal and has tried recently to be a bad-ass . . . Nah, I still say that it’s SYDNEY YUS!

Danny had a fantasy about kissing Ethan, and in the next strip, he had to hide a boner. That’s not terribly ambiguous.
Now that you mention this one… I realize that I totally missed that one strip.
I guess there’s the fact Ethan and Danny are probably my least favorite characters in the comic. I guess I haven’t been paying attention and ended up confused.
Anyway. My main question here being… was there previous hints of him swinging both ways before this story arc? Either in DoA or in the previous Willis-verse incarnation?

Other commenters have said similar things. I am personally torn about that dynamic, but there are some plus sides to it. Danny would be good for Amber because, let’s face it, Amber needs help. Helping Amber will help Danny’s sense of confidence, hopefully. Ethan will hopefully help Danny be less self-deprecating, and Ethan could really benefit from having a boyfriend and have something other than shame and embarrassment associated with being gay. Now the question is: can Ethan and Amber share?
The other question is: can Danny be shared? Dude’s the poster child for serial monogamy after all.

True I had forgotten about his reaction to Amber claiming to be his girlfriend when he was dating Amazagirl.
But then there’s this weird part of me reasoning out the definition of a polyamory relationship, the fact that he didn’t see Amber as anything but a friend whilst he had a girlfriend who so happened to be said friend. It’s like a part of me agrees that he is faithful moreso than monogamous
But really it just sorta feels like Danny would just be a medium for Ethan and Amber providing for them what they need, but would they really be able to provide for him what he is in need of or would he find it in being with them? Ugh damn my mind.
Now I say that a part of me is coming up with these reasons, I am not shipping this or trying to force it in any way. Far too many things that I’ve enjoyed have been sullied by people shipping impossible and illogical pairings based upon viewers imagined situations such as a sexual tension that isn’t there just because they bumped into one another.
Ethan would be able to provide Danny with what he needs, much more so than Amber. Ethan is a person who primarily sees the good in people, tells them, and offers words of encouragement. Danny’s at a point where he doesn’t know who he is or his own strengths, and he doubts himself constantly. It’s why he clung to Dorothy, and is doing largely the same thing with Amber. Ethan’s the kind of person who would help Danny build his own strengths, in a way that neither Dorothy or Amber could do.
And there is where he finds it in being with her. Look at how defensive he was towards Dorothy in protecting Amber. He showed a true backbone.
And all that leaves is Joyce to be completely heartbroken if and whenever she found out about it. Granted I really don’t agree with what their relationship is built upon, but still, Joyce is going to take it pretty hard.
They couldn’t share Mike in the Short Packed Universe….maybe here would be different since they do love one another as well? That actually….it might work. That is always my go to answer when you have a pretty balanced love triangle with affection on all sides.
I’m not sure that’s even plausible considering the circumstamces. Amber at the least would have unreciprocated feelings in such an arrangement.

The dry erase marker is the dog that didn’t bark. Mike took someone’s dry erase marker and replaced it with a non-erasable one. He didn’t draw them, but he’s the reason they are in permanent marker. Trusting that DYW isn’t just dropping a red herring there.

Well, there’s gonna be a male on male Slipshine. Whether or not it’s Danny is another story. We know Danny likes Ethan, but maybe Ethan doesn’t like him back (Unlikely, but Ethan’s only said that Danny’s attractive, but not that he was attracted to Danny).

All right, this has been bothering me for a while, and I had to ask: how would this scene have turned out if Joe got back to the room before Danny did?
After the 4rth panel I suddenly realized that Mike painted the whiteboards black with the perm. marker and then used the regular marker they found to help erase the parts that weren’t dongs.
DANGIT! I guess it’s not Johnny Bravo after all.
