I never understood the point of Uggs…or why people wear [non-work] boots when it’s not winter (sexy leather platform boots and goth boots notwithstanding).

I wear coats when it’s not cold.
                Heavy winter coats.
                Just because I want to.
People wonder how I don’t get super hot and sweat like crazy.
I have do idea how I do it.

How are they trashy or anything like spray tans? I guess it makes sense if you’re a total douche. And they resemble tribal boots like the iniuts wear, so by bashing them you’re kind of being prejudice toward indigenous people…or at least their style of dress.

(Putting aside the factual debate below-)-this depends on your specific definition of better, and for that matter on your specific definitions of heaven/hell/the rest of the cosmology.

For example I consider myself too moral to serve the Christian god as I understand it, leaving me with little choice but to take the low road.

Heh. The variety of variations on the cosmological, theological and moral constructs within Christianity are legion. For all but the most basic you can typically find a denomination that holds an opposite view

I meant when a person thinks they’re a christian and other christians think they’re not one. In theory the disagreement might be mutual. I can see the potential for epistemological confusion, but I see no way for us to objectively define which person’s opinion should or shouldn’t be counted.

You know a group isn’t unified by agreement when they can’t even agree on who’s in the group.

For example, there are some protestant sects that do not consider Catholicism to be truly “Christian,” as well as the inverse. Many people do not consider Mormons to be “Christian,” even though Jesus is right there in the name (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints), because they use an extra book or two. And on and on…

Well, she started out with a leg up due to the whole “studying is better than illegal drugs and/or reckless partying” thing, but granted that since then most of her authority has been derived from force of will and a baseball bat.

“studying is better than illegal drugs or partying” is a matter of opinion. For example, in Islam various schools of sufi mysticism have at times held drugs and partying to be a way to get closer to god. (Willis plz give Sarah a sufi roommate if you ever get to “next year”)

That’s not the moral dispute in question, its “studying vs drugs and partying” not “studying vs drugs and partying and being a jerk.”

No, the dispute was “studying vs illegal drugs or partying”, if you want to get pedantic. And by “illegal” we mean “could get Sarah thrown out of college and/or into jail for merely allowing her roommate to keep them in the room.”

If that’s the sort of drugs the Sufis party with, I have no objection to saying that Sarah would have the moral high ground opposing practices that can ruin the lives of those around you.

you been to college begbert? Every other person is on drugs and most people party. You don’t get thrown out for having a druggy room mate.

If the situation is bothering you enough that it’s hurting your studies or making you loose too much sleep, there are better ways to deal with your room mate then to get them kicked out. I don’t know the details of Sarah’s room mate problems so I can’t be sure but from what we know, Sarah was a bit of a dick handling that problem.

Also I kinda figured we were talking in the general case: studying IN GENERAL vs drugs and partying IN GENERAL. Since Sarah’s stance on this issue does in fact extend passed where she’s personally involved (see: her opinion on billie) this was fair I think? I mean wouldn’t everyone say studying is morally superior to getting your roommate kicked out of college?

Why do the people condemning Sarah and defending the druggie assume Sarah did not try to talk to her first? The Sarah haters seem to be so fond of “getting the whole story,” they forget about that part, don’t they?
You can debate the “morality” of drug abuse til you’re blue in the face, but the indispuable fact is that the roommate knowingly and willingly broke the law as well as campus policy.
While Sarah may not have been kicked out merely because her roommate was doing drugs, the roommate was disruptive enough that Sarah was in fear of losing her scholarship. Said scholarship was the only thing keeping her in school.
I would submit that, depending on how out of control the roommate was and what drugs she was on, Sarah’s moral obligation to her roommate (doubly so if they were friends) was to get her help to get her clean. Like somebody mentioned a couple strips ago, it would be very interesting if the ex-roommate was actually grateful to Sarah for turning her life around.
Long and short , Sarah fulfilled her legal obligations, as anybody should, but especially somebody wanting to go to law school. These are all supposedly adults, and part of being an adult is accepting responsibility for one’s own actions and their consequenses. Only gangsters and junior high studends blame the person who reports a crime.

The true collegiate answer is to study illegal drugs
                and partying.

Getting thrown out can greatly facilitate your college
experience by reducing your class load.

Sufis are a mixed bunch, from frumpy uptight fundies
to expand your mind for god. Also centuries of
persecution means what they say in private is different
from what they say in public.

I just reviewed the conversation in question, and reading it again all at once (as opposed to over several days), it’s got pretty odd flow. Sarah first imposed herself as a replacement for Billie (on the notion that Billie was going to damage Joyce), but seemed to completely abandon the idea in frustration when Joyce stated that she thought Sarah hated her. (Hated Joyce, that is.) Then Joyce turned the situation around and stated that she wished that Sarah would do small nice
things with her, and lo and behold Sarah decides to join the two of them, rather than usurping Billie. So in a way we’re both right – though in the end it was Joyce’s prodding that sealed the deal.

This sort of messy-looking writing would seem problematic, except that’s how people actually act.

I really like the subtly changing shadows in the first two panels, it makes it clear that time is passing, and you’re not just recycing panels, but at the same time, it’s subtle enough that they manage to look the same to the casual observer.

Oh buck up Sarah. The fact that you feel bad about it means that deep down, you really are a good person. Everyone makes mistakes. Everyone punches a bongo sometimes.

You’re like a cat who expresses affection with her claws instead of her purrs. It’s ok. With enough belly rubs and a trip to the vet, you’ll learn to purr again. Of course, afterward you’ll be an indoor cat, but Joyce will make sure you get lots of exercise.

It’s hard to tell whether she’s making a tongue-in-cheek observation or genuinely being down on herself. Her body language could go either way, and the wide shot doesn’t give us a close view of her facial expression. I certainly hope TheLastOutlaw is right, though.

I think it’s because of her innocence.
Either someone wants to defend it or take it away from her.
Even though Raidah wasn’t doing anything wrong, Sarah still wanted to
defend her because of how Raidah treats her.

There is hope for all of them, they are sitting together. Joyce stayed with Sarah because I think she knows Sarah was trying to protect her, just not why.
Dina stayed because Sarah dragged her, after that no one knows why she’s still there, but Dina.
Billie stayed ? no idea, she could have given Joyce the money to pay for her clothes and stayed with the sharks she’s dying to get in with. So why in heck is she still there?
I love Joyce, she’s right, she really can’t. Even when it’s not her fault.

Dina knows what she is doing there – she’s partaking of a social event that includes people. She probably isn’t sure what that means she should be doing, so she’s taking her cues – or trying to – from the others around her. Which at this point means sitting around doing nothing.

She’s probably given up on the Discovery Store at this point, though it’s possible she hasn’t and will bring it up in an upcoming comic. But I doubt it.
