            It’s sort of overwhelming, actually.

No two characters can make sweater-vests look so sexy.

“No two characters can make sweater-vests look so sexy.”

If Sweater vests contain sweater puppies, then you don’t have to do much more.

Does anyone else notice or concerned, (with the exception of Billy) that everyone so far seems to be way too coherent at 8 am… on a Sunday, on campus that was rated the number 15 party school in the US by the Princeton review, within the first month of school. although there has only been five people may be just a fluke or I need too adjust my suspension disbelief. But the comic still great and i love the look on Dorothy’s face in panel three, its the perfect “I regret this decision immediately” look

    • Bekah
      Bekah
      January 23, 2012 at 12:19 am | #

      You count 5 people.

      1) Joyce, who has no reason NOT to be bright eyed and bushy tailed.
      2) Dorothy, who knew well in advance that she would have to be up early on Sunday, and is known to only be at that school while she waits for her chance to transfer to an Ivy League school.
      3) Sarah, who hates fun in all its forms (with the notable exception of the fun derived from being contrary)
      4) Sierra, who is Dorothy’s roommate, and likely also knew, well in advance, that Dorothy would need to be up early.
      5) Billie, who wanted to stay in bed.

I can understand Joyce and Dorothy being coherent, and ready but Sierra and Sarah being coherent is a bit odd i mean if Sarah hates fun being up at 7 am or 8 am actually since she was studying and dressed meaning she got up earlier i am not sure who Sierra is and i know nothing about her As i have only been reading Shortpacked and Dumbing of Age I assume she is from It’s Walky or Roomies, or Joyce and Walky or she was either shown or mentioned briefly earlier in the comic and I don’t remember her. But her being up and coherent i find personally odd even if she knew Dorothy had to get up there is no real reason for her to care to get dressed and answer the door unless she is going to church with them. From my experience from living in the dorms, it is rare to see someone up on a Sunday at least at this time less they are ending an all Night-er or going to church or coming back from a party.

I am fairly certain Sarah was awake for the sole purpose of overhearing Joyce and Billie discuss sticking things in holes.

Such is life as a punchline. Tiresome, and never any credit. And long line-ups to get bread each day. Or something. Punchlines have it tough.

It’s usually a no-no to do things such as wear the same dress to a party. In this case, though, I believe it’s more a case of “I’m dressed just like her? People will think we think the same way.” Or a similar vein.

Actually, it’s more a “I worked for hours on this (look/outfit), and this bongo just waltzes in here and steals my thunder!

Usually followed by both of you looking daggers at each other the rest of the night, because the bongo did do it on purpose just to show you up. But it looks better on you than it does that jealous skank.

I mean, uhm… I’ve never been in that situation. Really.

Dorothy feels kind of responsible for what happened to Joyce, so a few strips back, she asked Joyce if there was anything she could do to make it up to her. And this is what Joyce requested.

      • Victor
        Victor
        January 23, 2012 at 1:58 pm | #

Yeah, but knowing Dorothy’s beliefs, Joyce is still asking her to betray those beliefs, thinking that she will “see the light”. That’s close-minded and selfish on her part. Doesn’t sit well with me, no matter how guilty Dorothy feels.

Joyce isn’t asking her to “betray” her beliefs, she’s asking her to go to church. Is Joyce hoping Dorothy will accept Jesus into her heart? Certainly. Will she do everything she can to make sure Dorothy forsakes her godless heathen ways, particularly if it results in wacky hilarity? I would not be the least bit surprised. But Joyce is kind, and she cares about other people’s feelings. I expect her motives are not entirely unselfish, but at the same time, I don’t think she’s made an unreasonable request.

And as an atheist, shouldn’t Dorothy know better than to make promises out of guilt? She kinda set herself up there! 😉

Thing is, Victor, and I’m speaking as a strong atheist here, you don’t “betray” a belief that there is no god. There’s no structure, no dogma, no concept of blasphemy. Sure, what Joyce is asking might be mildly inconsiderate of Dorothy’s feelings, but she’s not asking anybody to “betray” anything.

I doubt they’re 100% pure. If her high school youth group was anything like mine, she’s probably got it drilled into her head that good Christians lead people to Christ. Lead an atheist to Christ, you get to feel good about yourself! Joyce cares about other people, but I’m familiar with this mentality–I expect she also wants to believe she’s a good Christian.

Okay, so I haven’t read EVERYTHING that Willis has created, but I don’t recognize Sierra. Is she a per-existing character or someone new that Willis created?

And honestly, Dorothy should have have seen this coming . After all, I think we’ve only seen a handful of times where Joyce has not worn a sweater vest.
