Kinda? Mostly I like that he recognizes that he’s screwed up lot, for himself as a person and also with Amber, and he wants to be a better boyfriend to her than that.
For a guy who just blindly crashes into new romances and completely dedicates himself to them without any dignity, it’s nice to see him learn.
I do admire his dedication and devotion to his relationships. He failed to see that the relationship wasnt equal with Dorothy, but Amber seems to place special value in him and has made sure Danny knows that. So, at least in this case, his efforts to be a better boyfriend are not misplaced.
(I mean that scene in the elevator where he does the eye mask with his hands to call Amber beautiful was just adorable)
But I am not sure if Amber is good for him. Remember when Mike implied that if she was likely to end up like one of her parents and her boyfriend wasnt an asshole then likely she was one?
Amber isnt an asshole. But she is going through lot of stuff. I fear her compartmentalizing her anger is just one way of running away from it and one day she will have to stand still and face all of it as Amber. I feel emotional upheavals are likely in Amber’s future. Can Danny be the steady rock she will need or will those events break both of them?
I’m never going to want to take what Mike says or does with any weight, so I’ll just say that while Amber has some major violent tendencies and she needs to work through them, the idea of her ending up like her dad is, well, it ain’t happening.
I think it’s absolutely possible they work things out. I mean, she has a lot of shit on her plate. She needs help beyond what Danny can provide, but I don’t think that means they need to be end. At the least, Danny is a positive force in her life and he can help, just not solve everything. Amber has issues, but that doesn’t mean she needs to be sectioned off from everybody until she becomes sufficiently normal enough. She can get mental health and also have her supportive boyfriend.

That conversation between Mike and Amber is my go to example of why I call bullshit when people try to tell me that Mike is just doing what he thinks is best for people. Amber has been worried that she is going to turn into her father ever since she stabbed Sal. It’s not some epiphany that Mike helped her have, it’s a fear that she’s had that he’s trying to encourage because he wants to tear Amber down.
I have sold Danny short before, but now I really do believe that he understands what he’s getting himself into, and he is still willing to do what it takes to help Amber.
I’m not entirely convinced he does a better job helping her as a boyfriend than as a friend, but now when he is a boyfriend he is not letting go anytime soon, so this is what he has to work with.
Well, I’m not sure that “Danny helps as a friend” is all that different from “Danny helps as her boyfriend”. Like, all that he can really do is support her as he has been. That doesn’t really change whether they’re together or not.
As far as him helping Amber, I don’t know if the exact nature of their relationship really matters. Either way, Danny cares about her and wants to help.

There’s also a scene in Walky Performs a Sex where Dorothy trys using his real name mid-coitus, only to realize that it sounds weird to her. Unfortunately, so does saying “Oh Walky!”

He dumped Amber when she was so low she could walk under a snake – so he could date his Amazi-girl girl friend. He’s ignored the fact that she has some real issues. He wanted her to wear her mask when they had sex.
And now he wants her to tell him all about her adventure. Yeah okay.
What happened to Danny’s nose in last panel?
When exactly has Danny dumped Amber? There was that short period where they stopped hanging out, but that was because Amber kept coming on to him, despite him making it clear that he didn’t want a romantic relationship with her at the time.
How has he ignored her issues? The moment he finally learned about them (after the night with Blaine), he wanted to help, and she bailed.
Also, WHAT about the mask? That was all Amber’s idea.
He “dumped” Amber because she showed up out of nowhere and pretended to be his girlfriend for an afternoon, while Danny already had a girlfriend— who he didn’t yet know was the same person. Nor was he aware of the Blaine situation.
Danny said they couldn’t be friends anymore when Amber made him lie to his parents, and then Amber didn’t give an explanation afterwards. He explicitly said that it made him uncomfortable and Amber ignored that. And he had no idea what kind of shit she had been through that day. Amber/Amazi Girl never talked about her dad other than mentioning the fact that her parents were divorced.
I feel like that’s not the first time I’ve had this conversation though.

You got the meet-cute, you got the showing-up-at-your-doorstep, you got the sleeping in the hospital room while ~their song plays~, you got the takedown of a major world power. And now they’re gonna be a threesome and it’s all about quips about Steve’s mom and newspaper in shoes and …. what do you mean, war? There will be no war. It’s a romantic comedy. T’challa can come too. And maybe Scott if Sam’s not mad at him anymore. Perfect movie, end scene. After credits scene is just Natasha teasing her long-overdue solo movie and the world is perfect.
Oh so Danny wants to stop Dannying things in important situations? I like how he’s progressing in his development but at this point it’s not a habit he can kick it’s like a curse.

The most annoying misunderstanding of this system I’ve seen is people insisting in rendering the name of the protagonist of Dragon Ball as Goukou. (It’s Goku, Gokuu, or Gokū, depending on which scheme you’re using.)
There’s some overlap. I would definitely say that Ethan is part of Joyce’s group. As is Sal, as much as she says she doesn’t want to be. And Billie also breaks off with Joyce to do her thing with Ruth.

He wants them to talk to each other and listen. She’s talking about his attraction to Ethen. Yeah, it may have the form of slash fiction, but she’s not bringing it up directly till he’s actually ready to talk. She may describe herself as crazy, but she’s very self-aware.
Danny not picking up that “I like Steve/Bucky” means “I know you’re attracted to my ex”–in response to a question about something else entirely–wouldn’t mean he was a bad listener. It would mean he’s not telepathic.

Though even then it’s clear he wants to talk about Monday (that little thing where Amazi Girl almost died/seriously injured herself) and Amber is trying to change the subject.

Though on a tangential note, I guess it’s a good sign that Danny can take 30 conversations about slash fiction in stride in the middle of his sexuality crisis.
Danny is there, he is available and he is utterly loyal and devoted. He also gently pushes and coaxes Amber in the right direction and he doesn’t give up. YOU GO DANNY! This is just what Amber needs.
I think that Danny is doing a very important thing here: He isn’t allowing Amber to treat Amazi-Girl as a separate person. This is understandable, given how badly hurt she was during that incident. A lot, both in terms of their relationship and her mental health, will depend on whether Amber is willing to allow this.
In the past he allowed her to treat Amazi-Girl as separate, but I think that was only because he thought it was in part a practical stratagem to protect Amber from the consequences of her crimes and in part nerd-flirting and sexual roleplaying. He’s only starting to twig that Amber considers the difference to be psychologically profound. And I hope he won’t be blasé about that.
I don’t think he’s allowed her to separate her identities insofar as he doesn’t recognize that she actually does split them. He plays along because he thinks it’s cute, but he’s very much convinced that he’s dating Amber and Amazi-Girl is just a cool hobby.
But, yeah, it’s going to become more and more clear to him that Amber’s in a worse place than he thought, and it’s likely that when he clues in he’s going to try and get her some help, if only because he’s ill equipped to solve her problems.
I had to read the comments section to realize Amber was talking about Captain America Slash fiction. I have failed myself as a nerd and shamed my long line of nerdy forebears in the process. I must find a way to reclaim my lost nerd honor.
I thought she was talking about slashfic, but then I thought I was wrong and maybe she was talking about a dream? I mean, if they make a habit of discussing Stucky fics, Danny, she may already have figured out your secret identity of BiGuy.
That might require more awareness of problems outside of her own, than Amber has displayed so far. She’s pretty wrapped up in her own pain (not really her fault, blame Father Of The Year, but still a part of her personality.)
I mean, she’s wrapped up in her own pain in that the things personally affecting her tend to take up most of her time, like literally everyone in this comic not named Joyce who’s been forced into the role of BFF-Caretaker.
She spends a large amount of time fretting over Ethan and trying to make sure he’s safe and happy as well, just not to the level Joyce has with Becky.
When she unmasked Joyce as the Whiteboard Ding Dong Bandit and Joyce had a trigger-induced breakdown, she tried to console her, and this was at the time where Joyce was that little fundie jerkface who corrupted her best friend into pretending to be straight.

That conversation between Mike and Amber is my go to example of why I call bullshit when people try to tell me that Mike is just doing what he thinks is best for people. Amber has been worried that she is going to turn into her father ever since she stabbed Sal. It’s not some epiphany that Mike helped her have, it’s a fear that she’s had that he’s trying to encourage because he wants to tear Amber down.
Yeah, the way people insist that Mike is actually a giant super asshole because he’s trying to impart a lesson is gross.

I have sold Danny short before, but now I really do believe that he understands what he’s getting himself into, and he is still willing to do what it takes to help Amber.
I’m not entirely convinced he does a better job helping her as a boyfriend than as a friend, but now when he is a boyfriend he is not letting go anytime soon, so this is what he has to work with.
Well, I’m not sure that “Danny helps as a friend” is all that different from “Danny helps as her boyfriend”. Like, all that he can really do is support her as he has been. That doesn’t really change whether they’re together or not.
As far as him helping Amber, I don’t know if the exact nature of their relationship really matters. Either way, Danny cares about her and wants to help.

When exactly has Danny dumped Amber? There was that short period where they stopped hanging out, but that was because Amber kept coming on to him, despite him making it clear that he didn’t want a romantic relationship with her at the time.
How has he ignored her issues? The moment he finally learned about them (after the night with Blaine), he wanted to help, and she bailed.
Also, WHAT about the mask? That was all Amber’s idea.
He “dumped” Amber because she showed up out of nowhere and pretended to be his girlfriend for an afternoon, while Danny already had a girlfriend— who he didn’t yet know was the same person. Nor was he aware of the Blaine situation.
Danny said they couldn’t be friends anymore when Amber made him lie to his parents, and then Amber didn’t give an explanation afterwards. He explicitly said that it made him uncomfortable and Amber ignored that. And he had no idea what kind of shit she had been through that day. Amber/Amazi Girl never talked about her dad other than mentioning the fact that her parents were divorced.
I feel like that’s not the first time I’ve had this conversation though.

Ambers group: Amber, Danny, and Ethan
-Dina fits between the two groups
Sal’s group: Sal, Marcie, Carla, and Malaya

Ruth doesn’t really fit into either group.
Mike is in the Joyce group. Well, rather, he’s with Walky.
But Mike is also with Amber, along with Ethan.
I get they’re from the same area originally, but I haven’t seen them together often*.

I think that Danny is doing a very important thing here: He isn’t allowing Amber to treat Amazi-Girl as a separate person. This is understandable, given how badly hurt she was during that incident. A lot, both in terms of their relationship and her mental health, will depend on whether Amber is willing to allow this.
In the past he allowed her to treat Amazi-Girl as separate, but I think that was only because he thought it was in part a practical stratagem to protect Amber from the consequences of her crimes and in part nerd-flirting and sexual roleplaying. He’s only starting to twig that Amber considers the difference to be psychologically profound. And I hope he won’t be blasé about that.
I don’t think he’s allowed her to separate her identities insofar as he doesn’t recognize that she actually does split them. He plays along because he thinks it’s cute, but he’s very much convinced that he’s dating Amber and Amazi-Girl is just a cool hobby.
But, yeah, it’s going to become more and more clear to him that Amber’s in a worse place than he thought, and it’s likely that when he clues in he’s going to try and get her some help, if only because he’s ill equipped to solve her problems.
Amber is actually kinda cute without glasses. Took a few strips to grow on me, though.

That might require more awareness of problems outside of her own, than Amber has displayed so far. She’s pretty wrapped up in her own pain (not really her fault, blame Father Of The Year, but still a part of her personality.)
