Even someone without wealthy parents; at least in my state adult children can stay on their parents’ plans as dependents until age 26. I haven’t run any numbers recently, but that must be cheaper than getting your own plan.
Though the hospital might not really be much more of a time sink than the withdrawal will be by itself.
It’s not really too odd though. I walked off a lot of injuries I should have gone to the doctor for at that age. And more recently too.:)
Nothing as potentially serious as this, but then it’s only potentially serious. Ruth got through it with little trouble after all.
Plus she would have some documentation if her being unable to write mid terms, or does poorly, is caused by said withdrawal symptoms, if she is at the hospital, as opposed to riding it out on her own.
Nah, Billies an alcoholic but she’s not DT level wet just yet. She will probably only suffer the shakes and the barfs and the oh so fun wild emotional swings. Good times.
I dunno, I got clean on a mate’s basement telling my parents I was going on a wild weekend to Cuernavaca. This was in Mexico. Some people just gotta get clean on their own. I do hope both of them take the time to attend an AA though…
The therapy may be the better choice for health reasons.
AA tends to coat walls and ceilings of their meeting rooms with tar.
They smoke like prairie brush fires.
Their morning meetings do breakfast bacon like a frat-house.
More a way of saying, “something has grown here that doesn’t belong.”
Go with definition 2: “arising or occurring sporadically or in other than the usual location.”
It’s also theoretically possible that she showed Sarah the print-outs, completely unaware of the reaction they would receive, and Sarah then frantically redacted as much as she possibly could.
But I’m proud to think that the idea of actual progress is actually the *more* likely scenario.
Or perhaps a cross between the two? She showed the list to Sarah specifically to prevent a negative reaction. Joyce IS making an attempt to be better at these kinds of things lately.
Have you ever read an Archie comic? Outside of stuff like Riverdale and their horror comics, the consequences are generally low-stakes, but they’re the epitome of idiot ball plots.
“Aging Smarts” equivalency is smacking the elbow just so, cranial interaction with objects ones depth perception assumed was far enough away or whacking shins against not all that movable objects that happen to have moved from where you last remembered they were just enough to interact with ones shins or toes when not protectively shod.
Makes you think high school may have been tough on Walky. Bio sister shipped off to boarding school, quasi-sister shunning him in public for image reasons.
Billie could actually die from this. I mean, probably not because this doesn’t seem like that kind of webcomic, but, yeah. Detoxing without medical help can be fata.
Special Containment Procedures: The entity must be contained within its dorm room at Indiana University. It… probably won’t leave, considering its social reclusivity. I, uh, guess that’s all we really need to do.
Notes*: What kind of ridiculous…? Get this report draft scrubbed immediately. -Dr. Clef
Notes**: What? It’s 2 in the morning! – Dr. Bright
Description: Subject is a tall, intelligent dark skinned young woman that attends Indiana University as a law student. It reacts defensively in reaction to most social attention. It has no interests, other than [DATA EXPUNGED], [DATA EXPUNGED], *****************************************************, and [REDACTED].
When hostile, subject’s methods of attack include sarcasm, scathing wit, a baseball bat and bitter perspective. The one exception to this hostile reaction is SCP-7023 “Triangle Smile”, which the subject seems to react protectively towards.* Further testing not advised unless given direct clearance by O5 due to potential danger.
*Addendum: See article DOABK1-9 for interaction with SCP-7023 “Triangle Smile”.
Billie is slurring her words right now, which is something we’ve never seen before. Even back during Roz’s party, when she was inhaling mini-kegs, her speech got musical but she didn’t slur her words. And she is (presumably) sober right now.
Well, depending on the printer, the “redacted” parts might still be readable through the back pen. I think she’s trying to have it both ways: (seemingly) respect Sarah’s privacy and hand out secret information (to help the others and/or show how close she is now to Sarah).
Yeah, in retrospect, I should have known that Joyce would have known about Sarah’s birthday party and already have the event planned out in detail! I just wonder what is in all the “Joyce’s eyes only” sections!
I do think that this must be the first time that Joyce has got a response of “Yes please!” from Ruth!
Y’know, Billie, not having a history of smart decision-making is not a good reason to not make a smart decision when someone else suggests it!
Well I suppose doing it the safe way wouldn’t take because by doing it this way she’s going to feel the pain of the symptoms hard and remember them which just might encourage her to not fall back into the habit, assuming she makes it through the storm, the easy would be just that…easy and less painful which wouldn’t teach her the lesson she might feel she needs to learn. (and yes it does sound unhealthy but this is Billie and Ruth, they both know neither of them is “well”)
Billie would be wise to bring in medical help on this one.
Billie: Hey I’m quitting big alcoholism cold turkey with no medical advice during finals week.
Doctor: The hell you say.
Although it could be something “Well Ruth, I tried cold turkey unwisely and it didn’t work, and it almost killed me. This is your fault, feel bad, and never challenge me again.”
Times have changed. 30odd years ago, people were expected to show up one week sober for stationary therapy of alcoholism. As first proof they were serious about it.
I’m not entirely cool with Ruth’s new personality. Just because she’s not depressed doesn’t mean she shouldn’t be a violent vicious bully. That’s what we like about her.
How many times do I have to tell you people, Ruth is a ripoff of Peridot? The green eyes, the Canada, the lady-lovin’, the ability to control metal, the glasses. It’s a 1:1 overlap. She’s going through her character development, that’s all.
Yeah, they do, but Billie’s probably only been drinking heavily for four or five years, (probably around the time Sal got arrested for the hold-up), not four decades. It’s not that death isn’t possible, just that she’s young and more likely to bounce back.
If you meant the religion, it’s a capital C. If you meant the adjective the Catholic Church is named for, you may want to reconsider your comment given it means “diverse”, “all-embracing”, etc., kind of the opposite of censorship.
How you know this takes place in America is in literally ANY OTHER developed country she would fucking go to the hospital
…or I’d say, but it IS Billie
“Billie! You’re putting too much bio in my auto-bio!” – HovertextWillis
“…better than too much auto” – Roomies!Ruth
That thank you from ruth in panel 3 somehow matches this comment perfectly, in my head.
*Glares from the parking lot* – Walkyverse!Ultra Car
*joined by every Autobot (incl. Megatron)*
I’d think someone with wealthy parents like Billie would probably be covered by her parents’ insurance. I think this is just Billie being Billie.
Even someone without wealthy parents; at least in my state adult children can stay on their parents’ plans as dependents until age 26. I haven’t run any numbers recently, but that must be cheaper than getting your own plan.
It’d still be a time sink for her right now, and that’s part of the problem as much as money would be, during midterms.

I don’t know about AA, but Ruth’s in therapy and Billie has it scheduled but has been blowing it off.
The therapy may be the better choice for health reasons.
AA tends to coat walls and ceilings of their meeting rooms with tar.
They smoke like prairie brush fires.
Their morning meetings do breakfast bacon like a frat-house.
Yeah, no. Being in America has nothing to do with it, this is all on Billie’s personality. Remember, she’s RICH.
This is a fair point. Though also it’s handy if the cause is something other than withdrawal and the hospital people would be likely to notice that.
Billie in the 2nd panel is basically stating the thesis for all of DoA, I think.
Ruth’s polite thank you is the best.
I love this. I love that you used the word thesis, and what you pointed to with it.
I guess doing dumb things the dumb way doesn’t work for Billie either.
( fills out rest of truth table )
Did Joyce redact every instance of “Jacob” and “Other Jacob”?
That’s ten billion percent likely
lmfao
The only time anyone has wanted Joyce’s help.
The other times have been folks wanting her help to bone down or to not bone down.
Bone down?
/me makes obscene, illustrative gesture.
I have a notion you meant “to bone,” but I don’t see how that adventitious “down” got in there.
Are you just showing that you know what “adventitious” means?
Because I don’t and your use of it is impressive.
“happening or carried on according to chance rather than design or inherent nature”
So, basically a fancy way of saying “random”.
More a way of saying, “something has grown here that doesn’t belong.”
Go with definition 2: “arising or occurring sporadically or in other than the usual location.”
…She’s redacting information she doesn’t think Sarah would want shared? WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH JOYCE!??!
But seriously, yes, Billie should absolutely be working this out in the hospital.
It’s also theoretically possible that she showed Sarah the print-outs, completely unaware of the reaction they would receive, and Sarah then frantically redacted as much as she possibly could.
But I’m proud to think that the idea of actual progress is actually the *more* likely scenario.
Baby girl is growing up, that’s for sure.
Or perhaps a cross between the two? She showed the list to Sarah specifically to prevent a negative reaction. Joyce IS making an attempt to be better at these kinds of things lately.
That would make sense too.
*the Run-DMC continues on the hacked Muzak*
What’s the saying again? The comic’s not called “Responsible People Make Smart Decisions.”
Billie clearly sobered up long enough to focus and read the title strip.
I mean, it is right above her head.
Maybe it’s called, “Aging Smarts?”
Smarting of Age: A webcomic about happy college students making positive, mature decisions, by David “Thank You” Willis.
Published by Ar**ie Comics.
Arspie Comics
An arspie is like an aspie, but British.
I didn’t want to name drop the apparently extremely litigous publisher of sappy comics that named itself after its main character.
The company responsible for the long-running Sonic the Hedgehog comics, yeah?
Have you ever read an Archie comic? Outside of stuff like Riverdale and their horror comics, the consequences are generally low-stakes, but they’re the epitome of idiot ball plots.
“Aging Smarts” equivalency is smacking the elbow just so, cranial interaction with objects ones depth perception assumed was far enough away or whacking shins against not all that movable objects that happen to have moved from where you last remembered they were just enough to interact with ones shins or toes when not protectively shod.
It’s certainly not called “Intelligenting of Age” either.
Billie’s response in the first two panels is somehow very…Walky.
I realize she would murder me for saying it, yes.
Heh, they have more in common than she’d like to own up to.
Well they are semi-siblings by choice.
Makes you think high school may have been tough on Walky. Bio sister shipped off to boarding school, quasi-sister shunning him in public for image reasons.
I’m just gonna leave this here:http://www.dumbingofage.com/2012/comic/book-2/02-choosing-my-religion/sshh/
Huh. Joyce is respecting a boundary.
There is something wrong with this picture . . .
Billie could actually die from this. I mean, probably not because this doesn’t seem like that kind of webcomic, but, yeah. Detoxing without medical help can be fata.
Joyce. You’re helping to plan a birthday party. Not release classified documents from Area 51.
You’ve never met one of those over-planners, then? They can be fun. (For a certain exasperating, draining level of “fun.”)
Hmm. Overplanning: Another reason why Joyce and Dorothy get along swimmingly.
Does Sarah work at the [REDACTED] Foundation?
Wait…
Why are there people with gas mask- AAAAAHHHHH!!!!!
THE [REDACTED] IS REAL!!!! THEY [REDACTED]
[END OF RECORDING]
Item #: SCP-5464 “L.O.N.E.”
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: The entity must be contained within its dorm room at Indiana University. It… probably won’t leave, considering its social reclusivity. I, uh, guess that’s all we really need to do.
Notes*: What kind of ridiculous…? Get this report draft scrubbed immediately. -Dr. Clef

Joyce would be a Safe SCP, Amber is an Euclid, and Walkyverse Sal is Keter.
Last panel: Once again, Joyce shows the Triangle Grin of Fazness. Kind of terrifying.
Also last panel: Secretly, Billie is grateful for Joyce’s presence, as she can claim it’s Joyce that’s turning her stomach, not withdrawal.
The “Faz Triangle” should be on maps.
Or, at the very least, on a chart.
Billie is slurring her words right now, which is something we’ve never seen before. Even back during Roz’s party, when she was inhaling mini-kegs, her speech got musical but she didn’t slur her words. And she is (presumably) sober right now.
Fortunately, foreshadowing is not a real thing.
Good catch!
It’s just so very Joyce that she FIRST prints out the Sarah-dossier and THEN censors it rather than just having a “Sarah light” document.
Well, depending on the printer, the “redacted” parts might still be readable through the back pen. I think she’s trying to have it both ways: (seemingly) respect Sarah’s privacy and hand out secret information (to help the others and/or show how close she is now to Sarah).
So very Joyce.
I can’t help wondering if Yikesy is the long-lost sibling of Banksy.
She could try smoking weed to deal with the withdrawal symtoms.
Weeds?
So a selection from crabgrass, ragweed, dandelion, buckhorn, bellbine, thistle, and goldenrod then?
Book 10: S’like Flying Too Close To The Sun
DoA Book 10: I Suceed At Doing Dumb Things The Smart Way Or Smart Things The Dumb Way.
Serious question: When was the last time Billie did smart things the smart way?
Noticing Ruth was drinking and taking her immediately to the hospital? Everything else around that was dumb but that was smart.
There was also the time she advised Walky to listen non-judgmentally to Sal about their parents’ racism.
Cold ass turkey for dinner tonight, it seems.
Just slightly better than cold turkey ass for dinner.
Spoken like someone who’s never had cold turkey ass in the right setting
Well I suppose doing it the safe way wouldn’t take because by doing it this way she’s going to feel the pain of the symptoms hard and remember them which just might encourage her to not fall back into the habit, assuming she makes it through the storm, the easy would be just that…easy and less painful which wouldn’t teach her the lesson she might feel she needs to learn. Times have changed. 30odd years ago, people were expected to show up one week sober for stationary therapy of alcoholism. As first proof they were serious about it.
Joyce will never stop being a treasure.
Anybody else thinking of the detox scene in Trainspotting?
Ah-hyup.
I’m not entirely cool with Ruth’s new personality. Just because she’s not depressed doesn’t mean she shouldn’t be a violent vicious bully. That’s what we like about her.
Just, you know, direct it at Mary.
Yes, direct all of it at Mary. Right into those teeth of hers, like I did to that jackass who pulled a knife on one of the girls last night.
pretty sure that’s what I hated about Ruth.
How many times do I have to tell you people, Ruth is a ripoff of Peridot? The green eyes, the Canada, the lady-lovin’, the ability to control metal, the glasses. It’s a 1:1 overlap. She’s going through her character development, that’s all.
Ruth is nowhere near as amusing as Peridot.
Billie is a disaster. But it’s great to see Ruth accepts Joyce’s help. Although it’s don’t looks really very helpful.
So I guess Billie is going to end up in the hospital or dying. Folks die from alcohol withdrawal. Easily.
Yeah, they do, but Billie’s probably only been drinking heavily for four or five years, (probably around the time Sal got arrested for the hold-up), not four decades. It’s not that death isn’t possible, just that she’s young and more likely to bounce back.
I’m kind of late to this party but “You two are frightening” “Thank you” is the best exchange between those two people ever.
I cannot see Sarah’s self-redacted text without thinking about Ada Palmer’s and Cory Doctorow’s censorship project.
It’s very catholic of her.
If you meant the religion, it’s a capital C. If you meant the adjective the Catholic Church is named for, you may want to reconsider your comment given it means “diverse”, “all-embracing”, etc., kind of the opposite of censorship.
