Yeah, I used to wear short sleeves to school on sub-freezing days. Now 68 degrees is a bit nippy. That’s what I get for moving to a nice climate LOL

I was impervious to cold when I was growing up on the Allegheny Spur, but three years in the Mojave Desert spoiled it for me. Now I put on my long johns when the temperature drops to 70.

So I googled it, and came up negative for a geographic location for Allegheny Spur. I found spurs for cowboys, an arms dealer from the civil war and the county of Pittsburgh. Is it the little notch that pokes up from Pennsylvania to Lake Erie?

If it’s dry, I’ll put the trash out barefoot in the winter. I wouldn’t go on a three mile run, but asphalt is surprisingly tolerable on a sunny day in the middle of winter. Jagged rock salt crystals hurt worse than the cold.

If it’s wet though, you need at least flip-flops or something because it gets cold fast. Not directly touching the cold, wet ground makes a huge difference.

I’ll still occasionally run out to the trash can (or the mail box) barefoot in the snow if I don’t have sandals handy.

It’s painfully cold but it doesn’t last once I’m back inside.

I’m pretty oblivious to temperature extremes – they affect me, I just ignore them. Sometimes, even to my detriment.

There’s also the fact that I’ve had severe second-degree sunburn (like, oozing pus-level damage) on my thighs twice in my life, so I wear jeans in 100-degree weather, even at the beach. My spouse thinks I’m insane. Yes, I’m pale and pasty, deal with it.

Depends on what part of Tennessee you’re in. Memphis area stays miserably hot a good chunk of the year, but you’d be surprised how many people move to the mountains and think it’ll never be cold. No, it gets cold, it’s just that we get ice rather than snow most of the time.

The Walkerton twins run warm because they are both overclocked.

Sal uses it to be extra cool, badass, and intimidating.

Walky is none of those things, but can run Crysis at almost 10 FPS.

What? Not hardly. Even if we get Walky in Full Crisis for all 5-6 panels, then AT BEST thats 1 panel per 4 hours * 3600s/hr * 1 frame per panel = 1/14400 fps.

I’m side-eying Walky’s lack of hand-covering pretty hard myself. The snow present suggests sub-zero air temperatures, and that’ll freeze fingers pretty dang quick, especially if there’s any wind around.

      • Vabolo
        Vabolo
        November 16, 2020 at 1:28 am | #

I mean, your fingers’ll be chilly, but unless you’re hitting around -20°C or below for an extended period of time, you don’t really run the risk of frostbite, especially if you keep ’em dry.

        • foamy
          foamy
          November 16, 2020 at 4:04 pm | #

Frost*bite* is unlikely unless he’s in a gale or out there for like an hour, but numbness and frost*nip*, where your fingers go all tingly once you get them in a warm place? Absolutely possible.

If it’s just a degree or two below, calm, and he’s only out for a few minutes, e.g. walking from one building to another, he’ll be fine. Start altering those parameters and you can end up in a lot of trouble.

‘course, I carry winter gear with me in high summer, so maybe I’m a smidge more paranoid about it than some :v

It’s a paradox, when teens think they are being “in-crowd, totally cool” is when they are the most likely to pull a stupid and die. When they ARE the most kieewl and chill is when they are just being themselves, no masks, no put on pretentiions, just -real-.

I dunno, I grew up in SoCal and last time I bundled up to go someplace snowy, I ended up removing layers because I got too hot.

But my mom is from Minnesota and my great-grandparents were from Norway and Sweden so maybe my resistance to cold is genetic. XD

Truly I despise CA. It’s *November* and it’s still too freaking warm here right now. I’ve been running the AC all week. My Norwegian-Minnesotan grandmother calls November in California “sunbathing weather.”

      Not me, but some.

And, apparently, still taking it in the morning. When I was in college, I never got lucky enough to take the next course in a chain at the same time I did in the previous quarter. Can not accept, suspension of disbelief broken.

The day Sarah is a morning person is the day we know that the end of the world has come!

Seriously, though, I’m loving the way that Walky and Sal are rediscovering sibling snark. They love each other but that doesn’t make either of them feel obliged to avoid teasing the other when necessity requires it!

I can testify that apparently you can train yourself to deal with coldish temperatures.
I had a coleague right from sub-saharian Africa.
He told me he thought he would end up dying when he came studying in a (rather mild) cold part of my country.
When we worked together, he was sporting short T-shirts until temp got below 15°C (where he deigned use long sleeves, and a light jacket when rain was around).

One day I asked how he did pull that. His answer: “I only take cold showers, and it worked”. I never tried to follow his path.

I’ve very hot natured. I pretty much never wear so much as a windbreaker. It’s agonizing because people notice and it draws attention and comment, which is awful. But then on the one day of the year so cold I want to wear something, I just suffer because wearing a jacket one time would draw even more attention.

That they are all taking math at the same time speaks to some deliberate coordination. Even if they are in different courses. At a Big Ten university, one could take basic statistics at several different times /days. Is Sarah in the math group? Pre-law can be just about anything. Journalism, history, a language by the three lawyers in my family. Is she being big sister enough to tie her schedule to Joyce’s?

At least in the previous semester, Sarah had a different class at this time (with Jacob), but they still walked together.
I assume the same still holds – Sarah’s not in their math class.

Squad refers to organization not size, though it implies a ‘small’ group. So it depends.

Back when I had a full head of hair, I don’t think I ever managed to have it as neat as Wally’s for 10 minutes. Or, for that matter, as neat as Gary Busey’s. It was more like Einstein’s on a good hair day (good hair day for me, bad hair day for Einstein).

Fortunately, I did not have a full head of hair for the generally expected duration for a guy. I mean, I’m still not to the point where I’d be expected to be losing my hair, but I’ve been enjoying not having the least manageable subset of my hair for a quarter of a century now.

Who should be the default doodle for Book 14?
