I think there’s some revisionism going on re: Danny’s parents. Re-reading their appearances in the Freshman Family Weekend arc, they seem… generally more inoffensive than I remember?
One is that when Danny went on a heartfelt spiel about Amber they started talking about themselves and the alt-text said “the Wilcoxen can’t bring themselves to complement their son, so they change the topic to themselves.”
Another is that Dorothy revealed at some point that Danny’s mom gave her a picture frame extolling the virtues of marriage, and Dorothy’s mom implied to Linda that the Wilcoxen were extremely pushy.
Lastly there’s a dream sequence Danny had where he’s talking about Amber to his parents and it starts with him saying “I know I screwed up with Dorothy but I found someone way better. I won’t disappoint you this time!”
As I remember them, Danny’s parents seem to think he’s kind of a screw-up, and that he needs to hitch himself to a capable woman like a leech in order to get anywhere in life
They’re probably the ones that got Dorothy a picture frame with engraved marital scripture.
Given what we know, my bet is Linda contacts Danny’s parents and tries to get them to get these two to break up because Danny’s “””Falling in with a Bad Crowd”””
They get hit by a car and both end up in the hospital. Though if they spend that time in the hospital recovering from their injuries together, they might still be a couple.
“That was really the worst time to say that but I’m glad when it came down to it you stuck up for yourself instead of slavishly devoting yourself to someone you’re interested in at the expense of your own feelings.” – Sal, probably, with more y’alls.
As having previously been accused of being either Stattler or Waldorf, I’m at the edge of the balcony in excitement. To quote Wilder/Dahl. “The suspense is terrible. I hope it lasts.”
“Fast ship? You’ve never heard of the Millennium WonderSal? It’s the ship that made the McNutt Snow Hill jump in less than 12 parsecs!”
“Um, actually: a parsec is a unit of distance, not time.”
“STFU.”
My favorite theory about that is that Han knew quite well that a parsec is a unit of distance not time, and he was secretly testing his potential customers to determine whether they were savvy space travelers who know what’s what… or backwater rubes that he could overcharge.
The old canon explanation actually acknowledges that he listed a distance unit. The Kessel Run, both in current and old canon, involves a black hole cluster. The faster the ship, the closer you can skirt the black holes and make a shorter, and therefore much faster, run.
Yeah, that still doesn’t work, because parsecs aren’t just a unit of distance, they’re a HUGE unit of distance. Any black hole cluster large enough to have gravitational influence measured in parsecs would swallow the entire galaxy.
Honestly, any real stable cluster would be measured in parsecs anyways because if they were not the singularities would get too close to each other and merge.
It’s not totally implausible; Sagittarius A* (the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way – and it’s worth noting that most sizeable galaxies are believed to have one) has at least one massive black hole directly orbiting it a parsec away. Plus, “swallowing galaxies” is not how black holes work, they’re not cosmic vacuum cleaners.
(I will also add the caveat that Star Wars physics, as have been demonstrated on numerous occasions in both the movies and TV series, are not always necessarily 1:1 with real-life physics.)
I think the original explanation from Lucas was that it was meant to show that Solo wasn’t as knowledgeable as he was pretending to be and was just boasting.
Mostly, whoever wrote the line, whether Lucas or some script writer, didn’t know any better. Every thing else has been trying to paper over that ever since.
A lot of people have made that statement and missed one important thing…
the ‘castle run’ is a trip through a cluster of black holes.
a straight line can NOT be drawn through it.
the faster you can go… the less distance you actually have to go.
God this is so adorable. And Sal’s happy smile in the last panel. Because Danny is teasing her, but Danny isn’t actually trying to one-up or humiliate her. Danny gets her, and Danny likes her.
Relax Sal, relax. Not everything has to be a competition to prove your strength. Embrace the “Danny’s way”, be relaxed, be happy! I love to see Danny tell her he likes her and be able to make her smile ♡.
I’m not sure whats happening here, cycling wise. Danny teases her about the speed, but then does he speed up and overtake? Or does she speed up and then they’re both going faster? Or does she actually slow down? Is there a way to tag in Willis for answers? Does he answer questions like this?
For what it’s worth, I think this Danny half-teasing her, half letting her know he can go faster, which prompts Sal to demonstrate she IS trying to impress him, and be, I don’t know, grateful? Happy? That he’s willing to match her competitive side. The “you don’t need to impress me comment” let to her being flustered and embarrassed. The “this is fast?” comment appeals to her competitive side, she’s far more comfortable there, and it’s nice that Danny can meet her there too (and not just at Mario Kart).
I’m a fan of The body keeps the score. It’s a book about trauma and it’s effects. One is a fear of rejection, which can lead to pre-emptive rejection. People can’t reject and hurt you if you don’t let them get close.
That’s Sal and her too cool persona. When your own parents hurt you, that’s plenty of reason to avoid close relationships. Danny us a great antidote.
Hey David, love you man, but if you jeopardise this relationship I swear I won’t reread DoA from the start this year. This is my final warning, these guys are mad cute and I only want the best for them.
Good morning! I'm in Uganda to visit family and friends.
But depending on your perspective, don't worry or I'm sorry: I'll be back by the end of the month.
See you soon, NYC.
A great episode that also just had to be like "Okay, for this one specific criminal, Metropolis has the death penalty so he can't reveal Superman's secret identity."

"The Late Mr. Kent" is damn good television.
Probably one of the best-written episodes of television written in the 1990s.
Not just animation. Television period.

gotta go fast when speed-dating
Sal likes to live fast, and Danny is just along for the ride.
Danny – not competitive, just wants to make her happy
Sal – tsundere wants to compete, but won’t say it
Danny – I am laying down the gauntlet
Romance At the Speed of Light
Just hoping for no speed bumps.
Love the expressions.
But the speed bumps are to get your attention before the Clif….
Also they make decent jumps.
You’ll never stop me, not once I shift into MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE
Atomic batteries to power. Turbines to speed.
I wonder if they bought the Turbo?
I b’lieve Danny’s bike has a YoYoDyne “Planet 10” Overthruster. If not now, then real soon.
A Yoyodyne overthruster? Those are “for shit” according to a company executive.
true. he had an older and more reliable engine available.
that engine did the job.
You have to put a card in your bike to flip against the spokes, that’s how you go faster.
And if it’s one of your parent’s limited edition, super rare card, you’ll need that extra velocity.
I’ve heard Black Lotuses make you go really fast.
not according to one expert that Eragon met.
I hope you just heard that. It’s the sound of the entire Abides throuple wincing in pain.
Arrgh! My cavities!
Too sweet! TOO SWEET!!
If you need help dealing with sweetness I have a solution:

It’s kinda crazy how much I actually like these two as a couple in this comic, given their previous iterations.
I botched the tag here. I’d been doing so well
Don’t worry it happens to the
best of us.Read this like Dane Cook’s “Speak & Spell” bit.
And I’m only a little sorry I reminded everyone here that Dane Cook exists.
They’re definitely a better couple in this universe.
Awww, Sal’s smile in the last panel is so cute. I’m genuinely happy for her and Danny.
So the age old question is thus: how is it going to go wrong?
It’ll probably have something to do with Sal’s mom
Do we know if Danny’s parents are any particular flavor of awful? They could also find a way to screw it up
Danny’s mom, what little we’ve seen of her, seems to think he’s a screw up for getting dumped by Dorothy.
That’s extremely unfair. Danny is a screw up for totally different reasons.
I wonder if she’ll have thoughts about him dating someone like Sal (either as a race thing or relating to her being a “bad girl”)
I thought she was saying he screwed up the only redeeming quality he had, which was have a likeable partner.
I like Danny, he’s alright.
He’s a good egg.
I think there’s some revisionism going on re: Danny’s parents. Re-reading their appearances in the Freshman Family Weekend arc, they seem… generally more inoffensive than I remember?
https://www.dumbingofage.com/2013/comic/book-3/04-just-hangin-out-with-my-family/wilcoxes/
Correct me if I’m wrong, but “your awkwardness is why she dumped you, isn’t it” is the harshest thing either of them says.
Well we got a few other indicators.
Danny’s parents put him down all the time and it’s just… it’s not great, unfortunately. It’s really clear where he got his self-esteem problems.
As I remember them, Danny’s parents seem to think he’s kind of a screw-up, and that he needs to hitch himself to a capable woman like a leech in order to get anywhere in life
They’re probably the ones that got Dorothy a picture frame with engraved marital scripture.
It was specifically Danny’s mother, as I recall. When she was 16 years old. (And it was a picture frame for two.)
She also kept calling her a “treasure”.
Yeah, I’m not sure Sal will qualify as a good catch in their book.
Maybe good as ‘the one that got away’ or a ‘catch and release’, but not a keeper.
Linda will sense that her daughter is happy and start plotting something.
Danny reveals what he said to Ethan in the hospital.
“That was really the worst time to say that but I’m glad when it came down to it you stuck up for yourself instead of slavishly devoting yourself to someone you’re interested in at the expense of your own feelings.” – Sal, probably, with more y’alls.
You. You get it.
It’s simultaneously refreshing and jarring to see Danny pushing the right buttons on purpose instead of the wrong ones on accident
IKR????
Did they slow down in the last half-panel? No more speed lines.
Maybe Sal realized she didn’t have to run from him, or maybe she’s just suddenly ‘in the moment’.
You’re wise beyond measure, blowjob cat.
I’ve say it before and I’ll say it again.
They cute.
Heckin’ cute.
100%
Really cute.
I really don’t want Danny to dan this up. This could work for both of them.
Definitely cute.
Yeah, keep your eyes on the road, your hand upon the wheel…
Let it roll, baby, roll. Let it roll.
All night long.
Do it,
RobbyDanny, do it!This is such a fun dynamic. I love that they can be playful like this.
Sal likes riding and Sal likes Danny, sooooo obviously the next logical step is…
I want you to imagine a rimshot, but as played by Animal of Dr. Teeth & the Electric Mayhem.
As having previously been accused of being either Stattler or Waldorf, I’m at the edge of the balcony in excitement. To quote Wilder/Dahl. “The suspense is terrible. I hope it lasts.”
If you’re a woman, you could be Astoria.
Yes, one of them is married. Blew my mind, since I always read them as a cranky old gay couple.
Dumbing of Age Book 12: So This Is Fast
Awww, how wholesome.
When will it be ruined by Willis?
Sooner than we’d hope, later than we expected.
Probably at the next intersection they ride through.
Danny my boy! Learning the rules and playing the game!
“Fast ship? You’ve never heard of the Millennium WonderSal? It’s the ship that made the McNutt Snow Hill jump in less than 12 parsecs!”
“Um, actually: a parsec is a unit of distance, not time.”

Yep. I’ve read the books that claimed that!
The Solo movie kinda made that canon again.

“Kessel” run. It’s named after the dwarf planet/prison colony located nearby.
Are you looking for A CHALLENGE???
Yes sir… yes sir, I am.
I like this kind of needling.
It’s coming from a place of kindness and fun.
And amazingly, Sal has already figured this out.
OH NO. Oh shit. This is adorable. They’re fuckin’ doomed.
how did you make my post thats amazing
Sal: Act with integrity!
Sal already beat the truck.
Audience: “OOOOOooooooOOOOOOOO!!!”
God this is so adorable. And Sal’s happy smile in the last panel. Because Danny is teasing her, but Danny isn’t actually trying to one-up or humiliate her. Danny gets her, and Danny likes her.
I wonder what was the last time Sal went out to just have a good time and did so? Danny has done that for her and also made it even better!
Pushes Bierce out of the way, plays “The Pushbike Song” by The Mixtures on the hacked Muzak.
I like the Mungo Jerry version better.
Relax Sal, relax. Not everything has to be a competition to prove your strength. Embrace the “Danny’s way”, be relaxed, be happy! I love to see Danny tell her he likes her and be able to make her smile ♡.
Danny is the one prodding her to go faster here.
He’s just giving her what she wants.
What a bunch of dorks, I love them
Weird, it sounds like Sal is trying to impress him.
I think it’s more about proving something to herself.
glxblt this is cute
They play off each other so well.
Those dorks
“Ah’m not tryin’ to impress you.” Sure, I believe you Sal. You’re not a little bit tsundere towards Danny either.
I’m not sure whats happening here, cycling wise. Danny teases her about the speed, but then does he speed up and overtake? Or does she speed up and then they’re both going faster? Or does she actually slow down? Is there a way to tag in Willis for answers? Does he answer questions like this?

The duality of shipping
“I can’t wait for these characters to get together”
“Now that they’re together I’m going to live every day gripped with mortal terror that they break up”
How did you sum my feelings up so well
Dang, Danny’s bringing his A-game today.
Danny is SO GOOD for Sal, I’m living for this!
Oh oh, looks like Sal is going to shift to plaid.
I love this relationship and hope nothing bad happens to it
SMILING!!
Oh no Danny that’s the wrong side of the road, look out for that truck-!
