I actually meant to link to that comic with different text followed by mentioning that the next comic after that one is also great. I didn’t intend to reference The Wellerman’s comic, which does not precede this one.
She was – I thought – less angry at innocent (she was unperturbed by peoples reactions about if she was not supposed to swear “Joyce hasn’t said shit or fuck”) as specifically the infantilization and not being regarded as an adult when she made out with Becky. It seems in her book innocent is ok, but immature is not.
Does anyone else think that Dina never really “arrives” in a comic? Like, her every appearance I just imagine the “camera” panning over to reveal that’s she’s there and has been for an indeterminate amount of time.
I’m not sure about Joyce, but Dina I think shifts her 3d z-axis position, which allows her to both maintain scientific validity, appear to teleport, *and* be ‘invisible’ to those trapped in the base 2d plane of the comic while still able to observe it herself.
Wait we can talk about this? That is not even the weirdest thing about Dina: she seems to be able to survive purely on a diet of sugar cereals and soda (and that one time chicken nuggets), can stand without moving for hours or days at a time, and is easily able to subdue prey many times her size. Its like Willis secretly never gave up the SiFy genre at all. Honestly, its kind of weird that Joyce became an atheist, when half her friends don’t even obey the laws of biology or physics.
Dina moves through the quantum mechanic system of uncertainty. She exists in a superposition of being in multiple locations at the same time. Only under certain conditions of observation is her location determined.
I mean given the position of the door in the frame I think this appearance, at least, is absolutely a camera pan. How long has she been there? Who knows?
Given which of them spends more time shipping everyone she meets, I’d imagine AG would be sending Amber to horny jail. I also cannot read it without hearing PotasticP’s “you’re going to jail,” audio.
Carla is saying that her plans-within-plans are beyond the understanding of Joyce’s mere normal brain. Joyce is saying ‘nuh-uh!’
As for who needs to be sent to horny jail, given that Amber was the one that said it to Dina, probably either Dina does, or some third party Amber was talking about (perhaps the chat of her livestream). But probably Dina. She was probably talking about some interaction with Becky with an overly sexual implication.
If Dina was talking about her feelings about Becky and herself, it’s possible that Amber was using it as an imperative. It seems more likely to me that Amber was discussing someone else or even herself. Presumably we’ll get context next strip.
Yeah, but my understanding of the galaxy brain meme is that a “galaxy brain” take is one that superficially appears to be a smarter extrapolation from the normal brain one by a mind that can see all the angles but, when you stop to think about it, is actually very stupid.
Like, I spend a lot of time on Lefty Twitter, and I often see them QRTing some of the “five-dimensional chess” rightwingers with the comment “This is some Galaxy Brain shit.” This is not meant as a compliment on their insight.
What concerns me about conversing with memes is that they often fade from popular culture (and memory) so fast that in a few years people are going to look back at there texts (or this comic) and have no idea what’s going on.
I love how the Tamarian way of communicating is basically meme references. Still not sure how their language would work when doing stuff like making spaceships or other highly technical tasks though.
I’m not sure about that, but secondary material explains that “In fields such as engineering and programming, a musical language was used to convey precise equations, numbers and instructions; thus explaining how Tamarians could effectively operate starships.”
It’s one of those cool concepts that’s useful for thematic points and the plot of the week, but doesn’t really hold together as worldbuilding if you take it seriously. So if you do try, you wind up having to patch it with ideas like that.
Which is fine. It doesn’t matter if it wouldn’t really work. It made a good episode and can make people think about how we communicate, even if it doesn’t really make any sense.
Yay for a strip with both Dina and Carla in it. Now for a strip with them interacting…
(They have technically interacted in a past strip, but it was pretty minimal.)
Liz and Sarah were going to annoy each other for at least two hours even if Carla refused. I mean the very point of this road trip is so that Sarah doesn’t have to see Liz again until the next major holiday (also so Liz doesn’t screw up her college career but that’s a secondary consideration)
Horny jail isn’t so bad. I mean it smells weird but I have my own personal cell there. Besides I can talk about how much I like boobs in there. (The answer is a lot).
I like how Joyce just completely sees through Carla’s “jerk with a heart of gold” shtick
Also Dina and Joyce conversation incoming about Atheism incoming, after the conversation about memes of course (after Joyce looks up the term “horny jail”)
I didn’t know what it was talking about at all until this comic, and I looked it up and apparently it can be used sarcastically to describe something or someone arrogantly ignorant?
Eh, it’s like a guessing game to see what they mean by it
It’s not an especially sarcastic phrase, it has about the same potential for being sarcastic as everything else. Just like one could say, “Wow, you sure are a nice guy,” in a deadpan way after someone brags about stealing candy from a baby. (Usually, if the person you’re talking about would describe THEMSELF with the same word and mean it, then it’s a good candidate for sarcasm.)
Truth. They are BEYOND simple comprehension such as ranking. To attempt to rate oneself according to others is a sign that they still cling to individualism and thus cannot be One with the Cosmos.
Hi, not related to today’s comic, but I figured this is a place I hear a lot of thoughtful people talk about life experiences, so. I’m a long time atheist and I am genuinely curious about why atheists convert to specific religions when it’s not for people or communities. What that journey tends to look like and why it happens.
Does anyone have stories or know a place I can read those stories without getting proselytized to?
I don’t know if it’s the same situation, but I got curious about other religions, occultism…Even about chistianism, but watching about people entering in trance by Holy Spirit, and etc
Yes, we’re very proud of ourselves (right Amos?), please tell us how awesome we are. You may use gifs and animal emojis (all are accepted except for the T-rex which in many apps has a bad posture). mwah!
How did Sarah, who’s not close with anyone except Joyce, ever get close enough to Carla to warrant her asking for a favour? Also, is Carla indeed a giant jerk to slam the door in Joyce’s face like that?
I’m sure the words on her door are supposed to say “Ultra Carla”, but with Joyce’s head in the way it spells out “Ultra Car”. Nice reference to the other universe version of her.
It does actually read “Ultra Car”, as we’ve seen in other strips—the Dumbiverse Ultra Car was the protagonist of her short-lived titular animated cartoon series created by the “reclusive-but-wealthy” in-universe David Willis (better-known in-universe as the creator of the still-ongoing Dexter and Monkey Master series), which was canned by the network ostensibly because the merchandise wasn’t selling well…but not before it had gained a devoted lifelong fan in child!Carla, who as she grew older not only decided to pattern her appearance after Ultra Car (dyeing her hair red for instance), but is implied to have actually chosen the new name “Carla” for herself as a result of how crucially-important Ultra Car was o her childhood.
Damn, I was hoping for a strip that’s just 4 panels of Liz and Sarah sitting in grumpy silence in the car where the only thing that changes is the background.
2. Huh, since the previous comic had Liz in the middle seat – I assumed Joyce was also in the car with Sarah and Liz. Guess there’s some other ridesharing random person in the Off-Panel Seat because I cannot imagine sitting Middle Seat by choice.
3. YAY DINA! I was looking forward for more Dina and Joyce interactions since Joyce ‘came out’ as an Atheist. Dina is also an Atheist, and she’s a lot more outspoken about it compared to Dorothy’s nonconfrontational attitude (or at least Dina is more confrontational when Faith starts trying to meddle with actual scientific findings).
I wonder how she’ll react when she finds out that Joyce has ‘renounced magical thinking’ and to the whole Becky vs. Joyce conflict. Because on one hand she and Joyce were never really super-close and she Loves Becky, but on the other hand the reason why they never got a long *was* mostly Joyce’s Young Earth Creationist Bullshit.
According to Willis in the comments yesterday, Sarah deliberately made Liz sit in the middle seat so Liz wouldn’t be able to escape as easily. I don’t think “choice” factored much into it.
Given how Dina reacted when she thought Joyce was pulling Becky back into fundie-land, I would suspect Dina not to be down with Becky trying to shut down Joyce similarly.
I find it strangely wholesome that Joyce is now on a level of familiarity with Dina that she can immediately know what the situation is without her needing to elaborate.
today in #9chickweedlane i learned that "how to lie" is not, actually, achieved by cupping the balls, despite the evidence of the entirety of the first panel, but by some other giant pile of words i guess, tl;dr
“It’s not me who’s a bigot,” they always argue. “I’m fine with all you people. But the rest of the electorate is full of bigots, on whose behalf I will now speak”

Nothing could have prepared me for Dina’s final line.
I am also deeply perturbed. For a protector of the innocent, Amber seems deeply committed to destroying Dina’s.
Uhhh…..
The comic after it is great too.
I actually meant to link to that comic with different text followed by mentioning that the next comic after that one is also great. I didn’t intend to reference The Wellerman’s comic, which does not precede this one.
Ah, well. Close enough.
Seriously, this is one of my favorite strips, I really admire Dina and how she stood up for herself like that!!!

Good point. I meant in more in the sense that known should have to know what ‘horny jail’ is.
I remember Dina getting really annoyed at people thinking that she was innocent.
Here here! Infantilization is especially insidious like this
.
I think this is just a case of Dina being less online than Amber. It’s not innocence or immaturity, she’s just out of the loop.
Does anyone else think that Dina never really “arrives” in a comic? Like, her every appearance I just imagine the “camera” panning over to reveal that’s she’s there and has been for an indeterminate amount of time.
She teleports the most out of any character. She usually uses doors to hide it but she may be slowly becoming aware of the 4th wall.
I thought it was Joyce that teleported, while Dina had the power of invisibility.
Joyce teleports to Dorothy and Dina teleports to behind any door. There are limitations and strengths to both
I’m not sure about Joyce, but Dina I think shifts her 3d z-axis position, which allows her to both maintain scientific validity, appear to teleport, *and* be ‘invisible’ to those trapped in the base 2d plane of the comic while still able to observe it herself.
She can just noclip to her destination.
I thought that was just a MegaTokyo thing, is it spreading to other comics?
Wait we can talk about this? That is not even the weirdest thing about Dina: she seems to be able to survive purely on a diet of sugar cereals and soda (and that one time chicken nuggets), can stand without moving for hours or days at a time, and is easily able to subdue prey many times her size. Its like Willis secretly never gave up the SiFy genre at all. Honestly, its kind of weird that Joyce became an atheist, when half her friends don’t even obey the laws of biology or physics.

I mean given the position of the door in the frame I think this appearance, at least, is absolutely a camera pan. How long has she been there? Who knows?
OK, even after looking up what both of those mean, I am even more confused now
Are Joyce or Carla using the sincere or sarcastic undertone of “galaxy brain”? Also who’s in this “horny jail”?
This guessing game stinks!
Horny Jail is the part of Amber’s brain where she imprisons Amazi-Girl when it’s not roller derby time.
Couldn’t Amber be talking about herself? Seems more likely to me.
Possible but unlikely. The usual construction is “Go to horny jail” as an imperative toward someone else.
Whatever the case, we must keep in mind that Amber’s might once again be hella loopy from lack of sleep.
Do you prefer the West Side Story approach of making up your own memes/slang?
This sure will be a tough problem after the apocalypse, when the internet shuts down but print editions of Dumbing of Age still exist.
The print editions will mostly be used for food and clothing.
You mean like as a fashion guide and food cookbook?
“We don’t know what ‘pepper’ and ‘macaroni’ *are*, but we know you don’t mix them.”
In the case of this comic, I think the context makes it clear what is going on even if people aren’t conversant with these memes.
I often find myself late to the party about memes, though, since the internet circles in which I travel aren’t the ones generating the memes.
All your Darmok belong to us.

I love how the Tamarian way of communicating is basically meme references. Still not sure how their language would work when doing stuff like making spaceships or other highly technical tasks though.

Amber does deserve to be in horny jail for a little bit
I was gonna ask if it’s really Amber that’s in horny jail, but then I remembered the last story arc we saw her in and it really definitely is.
You probably don’t want to know
Two questions come to mind: a) whom has Amber sentenced to horny jail, and b) why is it Becky?
I suspect Amber has sent herself to horny jail for her horny crimes in the previous chapter
Frankly, most of this cast deserves to be in horny jail for one reason or another.
True, but Amber has a lot of recent horny offenses and is the most likely suspect here
Frankly, most of this comment section deserves to be in horny jail for one reason or another.
Fixed that for you.
Yay for a strip with both Dina and Carla in it. Now for a strip with them interacting…

But I’ve been to Marshmallow Hell, and it’s a place I’d rather not visit again.
Marshmallow hell since that would involve boobs. o3o That’s how I wanna go when I die. Live by the boobies die by the boobies.

And LMAO, watching Joyce trying to explain horny jail should be fucking hilarious.
Does Joyce even know what “horny jail” actually is?
She may think she resides there.
I like how Joyce just completely sees through Carla’s “jerk with a heart of gold” shtick
Also Dina and Joyce conversation incoming about Atheism incoming, after the conversation about memes of course (after Joyce looks up the term “horny jail”)
Honestly, not a bad idea for a book title, though my vote goes to “Now That I’ve Figured Out God Doesn’t Exist, That Basically Makes Me a Brain Genius.“
This is just bugs and daffy but over niceness
Well now the question is: What did Dina say to warrant the invocation of Horny Jail?
Surely it’s Amber that deserves horny jail, unless Dina and Becky have been doing science
If Dina were recounting her conversation with Joe and Liz to Amber that could very well warrant a sentence to Horny Jail.
I’m highly doubt Amber would be doing Horny Things right now.
I highly think Becky wants to boink due to her fight with Joyce and her own conflicting feelings about her upbringing.
Amber spent last arc telling her exes she imagined them together sexually. That totally deserves horny jail
Ehh, I know what Scientist means on Imgur. If Dina and Becky have been doing Science they get the *bonk*
Wait, what does it mean on Imgur?
loosely, science = porn. “Does she do Science” is a frequent question under certain images.
Oh lol I just meant Dina feels pants feelings when she thinks about doing science with her girlfriend
Or it can mean an old meme from Dresden Codak:

…i’m so sorry
Why should you be sorry for presenting me with a dilemma.
Curiousity vs. good sense. Who wins this time.
I guess good sense won out or you would’ve realized what I was actually apologizing for =P
Bonk!
Carla is the most galaxy brain in the entire cast tbh. Sorry Joyce
Do you mean that in the sincere or sarcastic sense?
I don’t know what the sarcastic sense would be
I didn’t know what it was talking about at all until this comic, and I looked it up and apparently it can be used sarcastically to describe something or someone arrogantly ignorant?
Eh, it’s like a guessing game to see what they mean by it
Carla is saying her plan was genius, possibly in a convoluted way.
It’s not an especially sarcastic phrase, it has about the same potential for being sarcastic as everything else. Just like one could say, “Wow, you sure are a nice guy,” in a deadpan way after someone brags about stealing candy from a baby. (Usually, if the person you’re talking about would describe THEMSELF with the same word and mean it, then it’s a good candidate for sarcasm.)
it’s a meme though so it is kind of inherently sarcastic.
The joke is that Carla is being silly and self-aware but Joyce takes it a bit too literally. At least that’s my read =)
Brain And Brain, What Is Brain?!
Galaxy Brains don’t tell normal brains their ranking.
Truth. They are BEYOND simple comprehension such as ranking. To attempt to rate oneself according to others is a sign that they still cling to individualism and thus cannot be One with the Cosmos.
I hereby request a full storyline of the resultant conversation.
a place where Dina belongs
Wait, isn’t Dina Grey-Ace?
It’d make more sense for Amber to be there, or Becky to send herself there!
as for as I’m concerned, everyone can go to the horny jail.
Carla is ace and sex-repulsed, surely she doesn’t belong there either?
She goes in the little “just visiting” strip around the edge of the jail tile.
Does horny jail allow conjugal visits?
Yes, but only once. Then you’re not just visiting anymore.
Classic Carla. At least it’s not to the Amazon.
Nope. Zoomr doesn’t send people to the Amazon. LYFT is sending people to Amazon.
Horny jail, it’s where Becky is All the time and refuses to leave.
Missed opportunity: Dina isn’t wearing her triceratop when asking about horny jail.
We know she’s wearing a tank top in an upcoming chapter though. That will probably drive Becky to spontaneously burst into flames.

Hello there!
Milu and I had created a montage video of the I’ll Leave you a Phantom chapter last page.
After the January 17th mega-strip, Milo took an idea from Guigui and shared mixed audio and cropped images from the strip in this comment. My work was just mixing all these parts into a video.
So, the finished work is here!!Hope you enjoy the vídeo.
Hollaaaaa!
Yes, we’re very proud of ourselves (right Amos?), please tell us how awesome we are. You may use gifs and animal emojis (all are accepted except for the T-rex which in many apps has a bad posture). mwah!
Hell yeah, I am!
Milu, Amos and Guigui are awesome and I am a bug!
ahahaha
Sorry Carla, but Joyce is right. Just admit you are a good person for once!
How did Sarah, who’s not close with anyone except Joyce, ever get close enough to Carla to warrant her asking for a favour? Also, is Carla indeed a giant jerk to slam the door in Joyce’s face like that?
Carla and Sarah are both Sophomores. They’ve probably known each other longer than most of the others in the cast.
I’m sure the words on her door are supposed to say “Ultra Carla”, but with Joyce’s head in the way it spells out “Ultra Car”. Nice reference to the other universe version of her.
It does actually read “Ultra Car”, as we’ve seen in other strips—the Dumbiverse Ultra Car was the protagonist of her short-lived titular animated cartoon series created by the “reclusive-but-wealthy” in-universe David Willis (better-known in-universe as the creator of the still-ongoing Dexter and Monkey Master series), which was canned by the network ostensibly because the merchandise wasn’t selling well…but not before it had gained a devoted lifelong fan in child!Carla, who as she grew older not only decided to pattern her appearance after Ultra Car (dyeing her hair red for instance), but is implied to have actually chosen the new name “Carla” for herself as a result of how crucially-important Ultra Car was o her childhood.
the door does in fact say Ultra Carla.
Incidentally, i don’t think this has been linked today but this interaction is reminiscent of this other very excellent one last semester:
“Carla is great and I am a bug!”
Damn, I was hoping for a strip that’s just 4 panels of Liz and Sarah sitting in grumpy silence in the car where the only thing that changes is the background.
We’re going to get those, but they’ll be interspersed among the rest of the stuff going on back on campus today.
They’ll pop up on a cliffhanger so that Willis can laugh maniacally at our pain.
1. I love Carla so much
I would really like Dina to become involved in the atheism drama, but that might resolve things too quickly.
On the other hand it might cause drama between Dina and Becky since we know Becky’s trying to nudge Joyce back to Christianity
Given how Dina reacted when she thought Joyce was pulling Becky back into fundie-land, I would suspect Dina not to be down with Becky trying to shut down Joyce similarly.
It would be interesting if it started with Dina and Joyce talking about it. I suspect Becky and Dina talking will happen, but that’ll be later.
Sorry, Carla. You’re a good’un whether you like it or not.
I find it strangely wholesome that Joyce is now on a level of familiarity with Dina that she can immediately know what the situation is without her needing to elaborate.
My prediction: Dina takes Joyce’s side, not realizing it is a side.
My hopes and dreams: Horrible, painful, soul-wrenching drama for everyone involved.
Irascible Joyce is super fun when she’s not being an asshat.
I thought Horny Jail was Amber’s permanent residence.
OK, in context that last line might be the funniest thing I’ve read this year.
