But does Sarah have the guts to kill Karol? Because dropping that load on her before ending her would be a hilarious twist on turning the knife before it even entered.
depends on how much sarah was joking in the last panel, while some parents are probably used to seeing friends tease each other (tho idk how many ppl would be bold enough to do it in front of other ppl’s parents because i’m sure there are ppl that are like “oh they’re a bad influence, don’t hang out around them anymore” or “this is clearly bullying disguised as teasing because i saw this happen to me when i was younger”, but if she did drop that bombshell it’d def add fuel to the fire so to speak)
I don’t think Sarah was joking. In fact, she’d probably say something like that just for the LOLs she’d get out of watching Carol go into a China Syndrome meltdown.
‘China syndrome’ is a fanciful term that describes a fictional result of a nuclear meltdown, where reactor components melt through their containment structures and into the underlying earth, “all the way to China”
It’s one form of a maximum credible accident in a nuclear plant.
When a nuclear reactor overheats to the point that it melts, it’s called a meltdown, at that point there is no stopping the runaway nuclear reaction, because you cant separate the uranium into sub-critical piles anymore. In some cases, this super hot highly radioactive blob of melted uranium might slowly melt its way through the bottom of its container and all the way down until it reaches ground water (in that case a steam explosion will happen) or basically into the core of the earth. It’s like it’s trying to dig a tunnel through the earth to china, hence “china syndrome”.
well we never saw the other side/reaction but i think the only ‘offensive’ thing sarah did was answer teh phone and yell ‘fuck off!’ to who(m)ever was on the other end and then the storyline neded or so
Not quite joking I think. She absolutely wouldn’t have done it, but it’s her usual style of sincerely offering support then walking it back with a joke when she’s not taken up on it.
Yeah, she’s probably being facetious, both since she would, anyway, and also probably as a way of acknowledging a line had been crossed earlier. This functions both as a joke at Joyce’s expense, sure, but also at her own for her lack of tact.
I don’t think Sarah was being entirely serious there, no. I do think, however, that it’s sort of a tacit admission that she would have no actual idea of how to help Joyce in this situation– that is, the necessary tactics aren’t in her playbook.
she’d probably make some vague jokes about it but i’m sure there’s anecdotes of friends hanging around parents and making innocuous statements that somehow gets them in trouble
Pretty sure it’s her doing an appropriate level of teasing. like here. It’s a little obscure, but later Joyce accidentally outed herself as an atheist to Becky, and Sarah didn’t find it amusing.
She’d like you to believe that she would. … because I think she feels the need to earn some cred back after being supportive for a second. … or maybe she’s self-conscious about that sort of thing after Lucy called her out on it a minute ago.
Wouldn’t necessarily work, Carol has denied that Ross hurt anybody and that she ever curses…right after both of those things happened. She have serious self delusion if she believes Joyce would never do it she might actually be incapable of being convinced otherwise
I re-read that strip the other day, and I think she’s right about not cursing: she’s not calling for someone to be damned; she thinks it’s a done deal.
Dina took the lead after Willis reblogged it and it’s only grown since then. I like Dina’s chances, but this is only round one. And have you seen the rest of the polls in the bracket? This is gonna be a wild ride.
Oh god, how would you even figure out the funniest possible moment for that, like yeah, this one’s good, but what if there’s an even better setup later? It’s a real conundrum.
If they were somehow to wind up in the same restaurant as Walky, Lucy, and Walky’s parents are eating lunch so they can hear the fallout that would be the funniest time.
Welp. Here’s hoping that Joe sees them through the window or something and decides to join Joyce, since she’s probably texted him all about her issues with Carol and the divorce.
On the off chance anyone needs it spelled out: I thiiink Rosenthal’s a German-origin surname that’s not necessarily Jewish, but if you were going to encounter that surname in the US, there would be a very high probability of Jewishness, or at least, that would be the immediate assumption, similar to not every person with the surname Schwartz being Jewish, but again, it’d be a probable assumption, especially to someone like Carol.
Joyce is putting on a brave face right now, but she clearly feels like she’s peaked and is on the downward slope. Her best days are over, and she’s such a has-bin.
My evil desire is that Joe does join them but a newly single Carol swoons a little over Joyce’s Handsome boyfriend and is too distracted by how hunky he is to be a pill towards Joyce.
I hope Joyce reaches a point and bursts out with this exact language (possibly when Carol finds out Joe is Jewish and says something about Joyce heading hell-wards).
So, like, completely unrelated, but I saw a game where one of the characters is a gay man that goes by she/her pronouns. Is this something that actually happens in real life?
In some gay male circles female pronouns are used playfully for fem/effeminate men. I’m not that familiar with the gay scene but i don’t find it surprising?
As a general stance, while using the wrong pronouns for someone may be considered misgendering them, I think it’s good to remember that pronouns aren’t gender. I’ve never known a gay man who uses she/her, and only she/her, all the time, but it certainly seems possible. I have known cis lesbian women who use he/him pronouns.
It’s unusual, you might even say rare, but not unheard of. People, cis and trans, play with gender cues and presentation all the time – some more than others though, and personal pronouns are far on the “more” side of the spectrum, but it’s a thing people do nonetheless.
Well, Drag Queens exist and have often been gay men so, definitely not an unheard of thing, just not typical. In languages where I is different for each gender, it sometimes happens that a girl uses the male one as well. So I would say it is uncommon enough you won’t encounter it a lot, but it will crop up on occasions. Sometimes they just like it, sometimes it is to make a point, sometimes they are experimenting.
I have known a transperson who said they were both trans and gay because that was the easiest way to explain their current position, though logically, the way it worked out, they would be straight, but they hadn’t transistioned, so still presented as cisgender at the time. But explaining all that is a lot of work.
Her mom’ll help her carry them to the new home they’re now sharing following THE DIVORCE THAT MUST NOT BE SPOKEN OF over her being pissed that her husband finally putting their kids first.
Cops are overgrown children cosplaying War, with all the rest of us forced into their stupid, childish game without our consent, consuming vast funds from the public treasury and ruining lives by the hundreds of thousands.

I cannot get over these cops wearing night vision to arrest a dude on a Southwest Airlines flight in broad daylight.
a woman posted a pic in a group chat of a baby turkey she bought thinking it was a chicken. She captioned the pic "IS THIS A TURKEY?!?"
Anyway, I haven't been here because I've been yelling IS THIS A TURKEY at everything. You should try it
y'ever figure, hey, i should put joyce in bisexual flag colors for this storyline, but you also figure, hrm, that might telegraph things 8 months in advance, so you... add orange stripes and... it works, somehow it works, nobody points out the pink/purple/blue
Jonathan Joss being shot outside his home while protecting his husband after being sent a threatening and distressing package is WHY we need Pride
It's 2025 and people are still being shot and killed for being queer
This is why we march and why we fight
the thing about white liberal Americans is that they'll argue to accept bigots into their tent before accepting the bigots' targets.
the targets that have been on the same side as white liberals from the jump.
John Redcorn was pretty much the only contemporary Native representation I had in comedy growing up. Probably the funniest Native character in cartoon history and a lot of that was on Jonathan Joss' pitch perfect rezzy uncle performance. RIP to one of the best to ever do it.
Carol does sound like she needs a handler
also, lest you forgot
But does Sarah have the guts to kill Karol? Because dropping that load on her before ending her would be a hilarious twist on turning the knife before it even entered.
YUUUUUUUPPP
Joyce is making a huge mistake not having Sarah by her side, really
depends on how much sarah was joking in the last panel, while some parents are probably used to seeing friends tease each other (tho idk how many ppl would be bold enough to do it in front of other ppl’s parents because i’m sure there are ppl that are like “oh they’re a bad influence, don’t hang out around them anymore” or “this is clearly bullying disguised as teasing because i saw this happen to me when i was younger”, but if she did drop that bombshell it’d def add fuel to the fire so to speak)
I don’t think Sarah was joking. In fact, she’d probably say something like that just for the LOLs she’d get out of watching Carol go into a China Syndrome meltdown.
Pika pika? What is a “China Syndrome Meltdown”?
The China Syndrome (1979) with Jane Fonda, Jack Lemmon, Michael Douglas.
I haven’t actually seen it, so I can’t say more.
Or, I could bother to read the tag line: “A reporter finds what appears to be a cover-up of safety hazards at a nuclear power plant.”
I assumed an emotional meltdown in the movie instead of literal.
‘China syndrome’ is a fanciful term that describes a fictional result of a nuclear meltdown, where reactor components melt through their containment structures and into the underlying earth, “all the way to China”
It’s one form of a maximum credible accident in a nuclear plant.

That’s what fiends are for
They’ll stick with you through hell.
Even if they have to take your there themselves.
Fiends are very similar to friends, orthographically
Weird circle jerks?
I’d like to believe that Sarah wouldn’t do that.
She thinks it’s funny to joke about but I can’t imagine her actually knowingly endangering a friend like that.
Yeah, she’s probably being facetious, both since she would, anyway, and also probably as a way of acknowledging a line had been crossed earlier. This functions both as a joke at Joyce’s expense, sure, but also at her own for her lack of tact.
More importantly, is this the most sarcastic response Joyce has made? I think Sarah is rubbing off on her.
Phrasing
Sarah wakes up with hung over with a dryer sheet stuck to her face
Doh.
I don’t think Carol would point a gun at Joyce, but…
But she *did* help bail out someone who did.
Exactly; and her logic wasn’t even Christian forgiveness gone mad.

She’d like you to believe that she would. … because I think she feels the need to earn some cred back after being supportive for a second. … or maybe she’s self-conscious about that sort of thing after Lucy called her out on it a minute ago.
Depends if she’s a good friend or a best friend.
Good friends bail you out of jail. Your best friends wakes up in your cell next to you going „what a night, huh?“.
You have to accept that as part of the deal for someone who would be going through hellfire for you.
I mean maybe she’d say that to maker Carol have a heart attack.
I’m betting Joyce says it to maker her mother go away
Wouldn’t necessarily work, Carol has denied that Ross hurt anybody and that she ever curses…right after both of those things happened. She have serious self delusion if she believes Joyce would never do it she might actually be incapable of being convinced otherwise
I re-read that strip the other day, and I think she’s right about not cursing: she’s not calling for someone to be damned; she thinks it’s a done deal.
Not that that makes her attitude any nicer.
Carol doesn’t go away, she doubles down.
Sarah loves to help in the most chaots inducing way possible.
Oh boy I can hardly wait for the needlessly personal Sarah hate comments we’re about to get
Yeah her hat is the wrong shade of green. What a looser.
I don’t see any in the thread. Prediction failed?
It’s called the Carol Effect. It’s like a black hole of hate. No hate can escape when Carol is around, all get stuck within her, even hate comments.
To be fair, Carol’s reaction would be hilarious. For us, not Joyce.
Someday we’ll get the Carol version of the Shocked Joyce Face.
Someday.
BTW less than 12 hours now to cast your vote for Dina in the Autistic Girlies Bracket on Tumblr! She’s in the lead!!! WAHOOOO!!!!

Hell yeah!!!! Reagan Ridley from Netflix’s Inside Job is on Side B, I’M STIMMING SO MUCH YEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!
Mike would’ve done it
for a nickel
y’know i feel like with 25-odd years of inflation Mike would presume your mom has raised her prices by now so maybe it would be two nickels
with 25-odd years of inflation
Mike’s tastes are very specific and stable.
(Do fetishes carry over between verses?)
I feel that Mike would probably keep his price consistent, like Arizona Tea. As a statement, y’know?
He would’ve reduced to a penny out of spite but it’s not as funny to say penny
I love these two.
(People are probably going to choose to take Sarah literally here so they can get mad at her, but, like… I don’t. Sarah does tell jokes, you know.)
Totally agreed!
Oh god, how would you even figure out the funniest possible moment for that, like yeah, this one’s good, but what if there’s an even better setup later? It’s a real conundrum.
Mike would’ve known.
probably sometime in between lunch and carol starting to proselytize or so
If they were somehow to wind up in the same restaurant as Walky, Lucy, and Walky’s parents are eating lunch so they can hear the fallout that would be the funniest time.
“Hold on while I hold this fabrige egg and take a LONG smooth swig from this glass of water”

Gesundheit
Never look back.
Welp. Here’s hoping that Joe sees them through the window or something and decides to join Joyce, since she’s probably texted him all about her issues with Carol and the divorce.
i imagine they were going to eat lunch together that day anyways unless joe had previous plans/class
At the same place Walky’s going to wind up with Linda, Charles, and Lucy?
Yes… ha ha! YES!
I wonder if Joe will show up, and if he does, if he’ll try to cover for her and maybe even try to pretend at being Christian for it.
“I’m your daughter’s boyfriend, Joe… Rogerson….”
I doubt Joyce would let him, but it’d admittedly probably lead to some great punchlines.
I was someone that needed that spelled out because I had absolutely no idea. I don’t know if that is a good thing or a bad thing on my part.
Son of the Rogering.
turn around, and she’s out of there
like batman
Actual cannibal
Carol Brown
Oh BULLSHIT ya were, Sarah. Your face in panel 3 says else wise.
Joyce is putting on a brave face right now, but she clearly feels like she’s peaked and is on the downward slope. Her best days are over, and she’s such a has-bin.
Get out. Get. Out.
If this were Reddit I would be giving an angry upvote. Instead I can only give anger.
Wait what do you mean? I don’t quite see where you’re coming from, maybe your wording if off? :confused_pikachu_face:
She Has Bin. In her hands. She has it. A bin. She has a bin. And it’s a homophone with Has-Been.
XD
This has been a great pun, with liner notes.
*Boos while applauding while choking with laughter while racking brain for “yes, and” while realizing nothing will possibly measure up*
I don’t know what’s going on with Sarah’s body language in the final panel but it is hilarious
Her lower body is leaving as fast as it can while her upper body is unable to resist dropping some parting snark
1: Sarah knows about that?
2: Sarah should start packing a cattle prod and loan it out as necessary. I think in this instance that it is necessary.
Sarah doesn’t know all the details but she knows some weird masturbatory stuff went down
Watch Carol reveal she’s an atheist and just enjoys the racist community. Hank and Becky are the only actual believers.
*glances at tags*
Sal looking a little off-model today. Acting kinda strange too.
Also I swear she’s been raiding Sarah’s closet….has anyone seen Sarah lately?
My evil desire is that Joe does join them but a newly single Carol swoons a little over Joyce’s Handsome boyfriend and is too distracted by how hunky he is to be a pill towards Joyce.
Come on Sarah, you should have enough math to know that two points defines a line, not a circle.
She doesn’t know how many hands were involved.
A little concerned Joyce doesn’t consider her mom a threat.
Sometimes you withdraw from a threat; sometimes you step forward, to put it within your grasp.
Last panel Sarah is most adorable Sarah face ever (though based on some other comments, I may be interpreting it differently to others!)
No Sarah! Let Joyce drop that hammer herself.
This will be fine. “Boss intro music starts playing ‘
*plays “Conflicted” from Binding of Isaac Soundtrack*
Go get her, Joyce
I hope Joyce reaches a point and bursts out with this exact language (possibly when Carol finds out Joe is Jewish and says something about Joyce heading hell-wards).
Real subtle, huh
Oof. I’m guessing Carol sees everyone’s left and drops her nice façade.
I think she’ll keep love-bombing, but she’ll stir in some passive-aggressive comments that leave Joyce conflicted.
This is why I love Sarah. Sure, she gives you grief, but she will STAND BY YOU if you need her to.
This is why i love Sarah. Sure she stands by you if you need her to, but she will GIVE YOU GRIEF
Aww, Sarah really is the big sister Joyce never had.
To the best of her knowledge anyhow
Prediction. Carol has a new main squeeze. Evangelicals can divorce if “unevenly yoked “. If your spouse isn’t Christian enough for you.
Carol is way too happy for being newly divorced.
Joyce can be on board or become another one of her children who isn’t talked about. Doesn’t matter too much to Carol.
I don’t know, something tells me that she’s not going to give up her only (that she’s aware of/willing to consider one) daughter that easily
Hmm, the character in question doesn’t strike me as effeminate so far, but could be that. The narration also uses those pronouns to refer to her.

But explaining all that is a lot of work.
Thank you, everyone, for your input.
She remains a jerk. “Friendly” ribbing and insults are a thing I’ve never approved of. Not the way she does it, at least.
I mean I interpret that comment as more poking fun at herself and her own lack of tact
I see it a sincere offer of help, which when turned down, she covered up with a joke to keep up her “I don’t care” facade.
Joyce still needs someone to help carry the bins, she doesn’t have the strength of an ant.
Her mom’ll help her carry them to the new home they’re now sharing following THE DIVORCE THAT MUST NOT BE SPOKEN OF over her being pissed that her husband finally putting their kids first.
Huh, I was right.
Server clock’s drifting back a bit, it seems.
