I don’t think Roz needs to be bribed to do something like that. Miss Bean might have inspired the idea in her, though.

Not necessarily. You need to be both firm in your subject and an authority to keep a heated discussion like that on track and bring it to a fruitful end. The easier way out would be to tell them to shut up and do the presentation she has planned for the day. And that entails enough work already.

I don’t think movie ratings really apply all that well to online content, since really the only thing you have to worry about is your boss catching you looking at naked people. So the web is in practice way more lenient about dirty language than sex, versus television and movies, where the F-bomb and naked boobies are about the same.

I’m not sure about the current status of the rating system. I know that the “One F-bomb for a PG-13, two or more for an R” has slowly changed, for example. But, there used to be the distinction that a PG-13 relationship drama or comedy quickly became an R if that relationship was not hetro-vanilla.

I think the mongoose’s comment was rather referring to the “revealing” part than lesbianism. Since, if somebody uses “reveal” in a sentence, most people will add “boobs” in their mind and entertain themselves with the resulting image.

People’s minds do work that way, right? It’s not just me?

            It goes like this:
            “Reveal”
            “Boobs”
            “With my penis.”
            “For a nickel.”
And maybe with some “perverse sexual lust” thrown in.
Not that I’ve been around here for a while or anything…

The best classes are debates. No really, I just came from a class the lecturer barely had to say anything because we all raised all the points on is slides.

Also, Walky’s overcome his creep-face. I’m starting to suspect there’ll be a romance between him and Dorothy now that he’s not batshit crazy around her. Something about their placement in the first panel, and how they seem to agree, they just fit. Weird, I know.

Not too long ago in my school in religion class (catholic school, bleh) the teacher allowed us to have a debate about religion versus atheism.

Before then I thought everyone in my class were morons but they all raised valid points for both arguments.

I have to side with Joyce for the moment, not because I agree with her beliefs, but because she doesn’t seem to be actively and aggressively pushing them on others like Roz is. Roz’s primary reaction to Joyce is hostility, which makes Joyce understandably defensive.

Now, if Roz had said “I accept your views and the consequences are mine to take, if the exist,” and Joyce still kept being holier-than-thou, then I’d be siding with Roz. As it stands though, Roz is being the oppressive one at the moment, not Joyce.

Yet Joyce was the first to throw stones by screaming “Pre-marital hanky-panky” in Joe’s face. That IS being judgmental, and thus pushing her belief system on others.

As with the typical busy-body, Joyce claims she’s doing it for your own good, “I’m warning about the consequences of your actions.” With Joyce, she might actually be sincere, but it would not necessarily look like it to third party observers who aren’t familiar with her, and so they might think she’s meddling in someone else’s business.

I dunno, that scene seems more like it’s played for laughs. Still, Joyce is this sheltered individual who is still getting used to the notion that other people may have different viewpoints, whereas Roz believes herself to be a realistic person but still interjected when she heard something she didn’t like. Joe, on the other hand, made it more like water off a duck’s back and just took it all in stride.

Joyce’s actions are somewhat defensible, Roz’s are not, regardless of how you sliced it.

how is Roz pushing her beliefs on people? She made a video of herself having sex with a willing partner who had no issue with it being put online. Other people found it and made a big deal out of it because of who her sister was. Now the media is making a bigger deal out of it. At worst, Roz is just watching the snowball getting bigger hoping to bring more attention to sexual freedom issues.
Joyce, however, saw Joe and took the oppertunity to “warn” him that he was defiling himself because of what he chose to do. Loudly, publically and in Roz’s full earshot, thereby implying that she was also defiled. If Joyce had talked to Joe privately rather that verbal stoning him with premarital hanky panky it’d be one thing but she’s publically shaming him and Roz with little or no provocation.

I don’t think any of the three of them are 100% in the right here. Joyce should have kept her mouth shut (at least until she could speak in private with Joe)… Joe had reason to get defensive but throwing personal insults around, even in defense, is not cool. Roz is the one that really bothers me here though, because even though Joyce was out of line, Roz responded to someone basically saying “you’ve done something wrong” by trashing their spiritual beliefs completely and thats a pretty sh!tty thing to do no matter what the circumstance.

        We know four things:

        1. Joe does not care if he is taped having sex.

        2. Joe does not care if a tape of him having sex is put online.

        3. Roz put a tape of them having sex online.

        4. Roz did not ask for his consent to put said tape of them having sex online, as his reaction to this revelation is one of surprise.

The point of sexual liberation is equality. Regardless of the whole positions reversed thing, and who would be attacking who, the truth is that Roz is actually in some very real legal jeopardy for what she has done. Personally, I’m somewhat neutral on that fact as I personally invoke what think is very likely a real feature of the legal system in the Walkyverse, the Joe clause, that being the statistical certainty that Joe will eventually have his name, and the words “public” and “sex” end up in a byline, probably before he is 30.

However, outside of the realm of hypocrisy, Roz is in no position to be attacking Joyce as she is. The fact is that Joyce, whether right or wrong, whether offensively or inoffensively, was having a conversation/altercation with Joe that Roz was not part of. Socially speaking, intervention would be acceptable if her intention was to cool things down, but it wasn’t. It wasn’t even about the victim of what could be perceived as the aggression, Joe. She intervened so she could unload her aggression on Joyce. That is interrupting. That is rude. And that is socially indefensible. By measure of words alone, she and Joyce are being equally asinine. But Roz is also being exceedingly impolite, and thus retains the title of Champeen.

Joyce started this argument by shouting in Joe’s face and then continuing on in trying to shove her beliefs down his throat. You don’t really get much more actively and aggressively pushy about your beliefs than that, without resorting to physical violence.

if it was put on the internet I think attention was desired. no one creates something and makes it accessible to millions of people and says “meh, I wouldn’t mind if someone saw this”. no, I think the attention was clearly asked for in this scenario.

In fact Roz is angry for the same reason Joyce is, someone is messing with her belifs. Really, would you care if the christian girl besides you think sex is “bad”? pointless I say, she is not sending a message of “evil”, she is just being noisy. I dont get the point, Is Joyce problem if she belives, she isnt going to make Joe feel bad. Religious people only afect eachother with their prayers, If someone on the street told me Zeus is going to kill me for my sins I wont start an argument. As I said, this is a pointless fight of Ideologies and Belifs.

    • begbert2

      August 25, 2011 at 10:57 am | #

Okay, I’ll try to take this slow. Joyce STARTED this argument. All by herself. Without any help at all. And sustained it all by her lonesome for another comic and a half (since Joe wasn’t interested in a shouting match) before Roz took offense and joined in.

You seem to think that the religious Joyce was just politely minding her own business when atheist Roz suddenly attacked her. This is simply not true.

And, Joyce was TRYING to make Joe feel bad. She was trying to control his behavior through guilt/threats. (This is actually a pretty common tactic of many religions). She was indeed sending a message of “evil”, in that she was attacking and criticizing him for his completely harmless-to-others behavior. The last time she had this ‘discussion’ with him, she did this by punching him repeatedly in the face. This affected him. Despite not being a prayer.

You seem to be committed to the idea that religious people are always polite and nice and the mean atheist people should just stop being so mean by disagreeing with them. This perspective is highly unrealistic in real life, but trying to describe Joyce and Roz’s argument this way borders on the delusional.

      • Gerardo
        Gerardo
        August 25, 2011 at 11:32 am | #

Oh my, I know atheist that would not do what Roz did (argue). And Joe deserved those punches. And look, Joyce was Trying, I am now trying to kill you with my mind (joking) are you going to sue me for attempting murder?
And well I dont know if she was sending a message of evil, maybe a message of guilt and intolerance, my dad said “kill comunists” all the time, I dont think he was doing no evil. Some time people that sends messages of kindness do more evil than good. Really I dont think any message is pure, but that is pretty irrelevant as institution are the ones that direct the messages.

Religious people are rarely polite to atheist, but atheist like Roz are delusional. Is the difference of a real Atheist (the question of god is nonsense, and thus not valid or viable) like Dorothy or a beliver of atheism (the ones that fight religious people as the christians fought the moros)

Okay. First off, for both of you, we have no evidence at all that Roz is atheist. In fact, there is more evidence to suggest she believes in 1. A female diety or at least the possibility of a female diety and 2. Multiple gods/goddesses as pointed out yesterday when she said “For gods’ sakes”

Now, as for Joyce, she is not trying to make Joe feel bad. Is it possible it will happen as a side-affect? Yes, most likely, unfortunately. But Joyce’s main thing is that she’s concerned for him. Now, obviously she’s not doing it in the right way. At the very least she should have asked to talk to him in private, shared her opinion, and left it at that. So Joyce isn’t perfect, but we can at least see she’s trying. She just needs to learn not to be so aggressive. On that note, she is not directly attacking Joe’s beliefs. Joyce has not gone in way shape or form “What you believe is stupid” or anything like that. Again, she has gone the wrong way with how to handle the situation, but she never directly attacked any of Joe’s beliefs.

Now, Roz, on the other hand, off the bat attacked Joyce’s beliefs, which put her in the wrong than Joyce. However, we can all see why Roz would naturally be upset at this. It directly conflicts with what she believes AND it involves the video she made. So, no, she should not have attacked Joyce’s beleifs like that, but she does have a right to get involved in the arguement.

In short, what I’m trying to clarify for Gerardo begbert2, is that no, Joyce didn’t attack anyone, but yes, she went about potentially the worse possible way to try and help Joe. And yes, Roz is the more aggressive by attacking Joyce’s beliefs, but we can see why she became upset enough to do that. In other words, both ladies have made one mistake or another, but shouldn’t have their character judged based on this current arguement between them.

It’s because deep-down the religious person can’t stop themself from realizing that their beliefs are the most flimsily-supported of jokes. This lack of real faith causes them to feel their worldviews being threatened by the merest hint of evidence that their beliefs are false.

If a person has ACTUAL certainty in their religious beliefs, then they do not feel threatened by the existence of unbelievers and can casually and calmly shrug such things off – much the same way right-thinking people shrug off flat-earthers. These sorts of religious people do exist – but they make a lot less noise than the insecure scared ones.

I readily concede that there is no evidence that Roz is an atheist, and I actually considered adding a follow-up post to make this clear. However, I think there’s reason to think that Gerardo thinks (thought) that she is an atheist, and every time I called Roz an atheist it was in the context of how I think Gerardo sees the world: the religious vs. Roz.

And you do not start a conversation by going up and shouting “PRE-MARITAL HANKY-PANKY!!!!” in somebody’s face if you’re actually concerned about their welfare. You do it if you’re outraged at them, as criticism. That is, an attack. This business about being concerned for his soul is a bullshit post-facto justification, whether Joyce says it or whether anyone else does.

Joyce started this fight. And not because she was gently advising Joe that by her theology (which she knows he doesn’t share) he’s imperilling his soul. She was doing it because she was offended and outraged by his behavior. Period.

Very, very few of my characters are atheists, or, at least, self-acknowledged atheists. Dorothy’s likely the only one in this strip of consequence. The vast majority of people in Indiana believe in God, even if that’s not an important belief to them. For a lot of people, it’s not something they think about much. Most of my cast were regular church goers before college, and they’re fine with that. (For some reason in college that drops off a bit, but most of them will be back once they have kids and jobs and houses.)

In other words, no, Roz is not an atheist.

You’re confusing Rule of Funny with retroactive continuity. That we laughed does not mean that it didn’t happen, nor does it mean that Joyce is not now someone who does such things with all the implications that follow.

Funny as hell, but let’s not pretend like she didn’t enlist a man to protect her from her date, act completely cool when the man started getting far more violent than the job called for, and the joined in for a full blown beatdown once the guy finally stepped out of line for half a second in a remarkably innocuous fashion that wouldn’t be more than a mild faux-pas to anyone else. There was a malicious glitter in his eye. I decided not to tempt fate. “Yes.”

“Good.” He slapped the side of the wagon with it, producing a sharp crack. One of Alpha’s ears pivoted around at the noise, uncertain as to whether or not it was directed at her. “That’s the sort of belief I want. It’s called Alar: riding-crop belief.”

        August 25, 2011 at 12:59 pm | #

Oh my dear man, belifes are choices we made, moral, ethics, etc. I dont accept an objective moral truth, Kant is too much dead to me. But nihilist dont belive in anything cause they are trapped in Münchhausen’s Trilema. Everything sygnifies, but not everthing have sense. Every point of view depends on faith, faith gives sense, facts (such as pain) only sygnify. Belifes always depend on both.

        Faith doesnt mean religion.

There is another choice, we could base all our decitions in unproseced facts, like a computer, neglecting our presonalities.

In fact I think we all agree here, but the issue is that everyone are choicing sides pretty much on ideological terms.

I dont see how is that you disagree with my statements. The only reason could be that you dislike the word “Faith”, but in definition there is an arbitrary reason for what we belive what we belive, that means that there is nothing objetive in our belifes. Oh but if I keep this I would end quoting Sarte.

We figth acording to our belifs, that is why they are so important. And we can change them. I am apealing at your reason to make my point.

Joyce and Roz both are wrong and Dorothy is more calmed, Walky (who dont care about all this words we write) knows by intuition that this is pointless. My main point against Roz is the comparation between the two types of atheism

I just want to addendum that I don’t mean this as a criticism – regardless of how the comic plays out. Having characters develop astonishingly fast their-time if it helps the story out is a common and acceptable break from reality, and contrariwise I’m also cool with a sprawling and epic tale delivered over years. Either way can be (and likely would be) excellent. (If possibly a bit harrowing for Mr. Hartley.)

Good move Leslie: When in a room of arguing people, it’s a good personal safety step to behind a desk. Especially if you might have to duck mis-aimed thrown objects. I’m not sure if Joyce will hear about this in her education classes, except as a practical tip in the “classroom management” sessions.

Nobody noticed the implication that Leslie is *used* to hearing arguments like this within the first week of class.

… i glanced at this comic before reading the previous one, and thought that Roz was referring to Joyce being a virgin in the “intact flower” statement, not her SOUL being intact…
although, the way Joyce described it, in a way it’s the same thing.

Here's an entertaining cite at the bottom of the first page
The problems with this prosecution are legion, but most immediately, the
government cannot prosecute Judge Dugan because she is entitled to judicial immunity for her official acts. Immunity is not a defense to the prosecution to be determined later by a jury or court; it is an absolute bar to the prosecution at the outset. See Trump v. United States,
603 U.S. 593, 630 (2024).

You Can’t Even Watch A Movie Anymore Without Seeing Some Theme Explored
I’ve loved movies ever since I was a little kid. Just stepping into that dark theater, with the smell of fresh popcorn, was like being transported to a whole other world. It used to be so magical. But now I’m thinking about boycotting movies altogether. Why? Because I can’t seem to watch one anymore without […]

It's not a new argument, of course, but Chesterton dismissed it effectively in 1908. "You will hear everlastingly... this argument that the rich man cannot be bribed. The fact is, of course, that the rich man is bribed; he has been bribed already. That is why he is a rich man."

Who can forget the Swiss-Austrian Union, or its famous capital - Istanbul.
AI generated ad by a company called Travello showing the 10 most visited cities in Europe, except the cities are hilariously poorly placed. London is in Wales, Paris is in Ireland, Rome is in France, Rom (yes like Rome but without an E) is in Spain, Barcelona is in Morocco, Prague is in Germany, Vienna is in Italy, Istanbul is in Austria, Milan is in Libya, and Antalya is correctly shown as in Turkey but is in the wrong place. Also a few of the borders like Switzerland and Austria or Hungary and Slovenia are missing.

wilbur, savvy enough to know he's in a comic strip but still not a great actor, awkwardly lifts a muffin up into frame so that we, the audience, understand that he has a muffin right now, which is very important narratively, but he's not really selling it well as an organic, human action
