Becky’s strategy of hiding something that you think is weird by distracting them with something even more weird is sound as far as it goes.
The chances of this working for Joyce, however, is just about nill and the glasses currently on her face will not survive a look in the mirror.
Becky’s thought processes relating to the divorce are cynical, possibly not altogether serious, but also undoubtedly shaped from being a strong-willed person used to expressing herself in a repressive environment where she had to go over under around and through in order exert any control or influence on her situation.
Also totally been there on the insurance thing. Nothing sucks more than picking out frames only to learn you can only really choose from like one rack. One thing they don’t tell you about glasses and that they can be stupidly expensive for no justifiable reason at least to me.
Glasses like a lot of things are also a sort of fashion accessory so you’re really not paying for the function but the design. And of course like any accessory they can put stupid stuff in it like gold or LED’s. Lenses don’t escape it either. Everything from scratch proof, to those transition lenses that are also sunglasses or bifocals or any focals effect the price. It’s a whole industry. Google even tried to do glasses once. I wonder whatever happened to that? It was news for like a week then kinda vanished.
Google Glass is an attempt at Augmented Reality. it’s still available for Enterprise solutions, but as far as I know, the Commercial release was permanently sidelined due to privacy concerns. To wit: People beating Glass users on the street because they thought the user was recording and felt their right to privacy extended to destroying any recording equipment they could see, even if it wasn’t in recording mode.
In fairness, a decent number of Glasses users were being super-obnoxious about their right to record everything they could see, regardless of whether uncomfortable they were making other people.
Violence might be taking things too far, but building a camera into something that can’t easily be put away without significantly inconveniencing the user was a terrible idea, unless the idea is to ensure a certain set of people get to take creepshots without anyone being able to tell them to knock it off.
On the street (actually, anywhere beside a private home and/or business) you don’t *have* a right to privacy.
That aside, those glasses are hideous.
Also, fun fact: glasses frames are actually dirt cheap to manufacture. The reason they’re so expensive is that one conglomerate, Luxottica, owns pretty much every goddamned eyewear company in the world, particularly in the US.

And it’s still rude to go around bars recording things you think might be amusing without the consent of the people present, even if it’s technically legal. Nor is appropriate to follow people you think are attractive in hopes of getting a better picture of them.
If those glasses were to ever go mainstream, we would absolutely need to to revisit legislation regarding the circumstances under which you can record things, because most of our society isn’t built around the idea that you’re being recorded 24/7, and nobody wants their entire life defined by a clip that went viral one time.
I mean, some people did overreact, certainly – but there were an uncomfortable number of people refusing to acknowledge that you really should stop recording when other people ask you to.
This is not necessarily true around the world. In Germany you very much have a right to your own picture even if you are in a public place. People can take a photo of something if you are on the photo but not the center of attention, people can not take a photo that clearly has you as the object of attention without your permission. Even Dashcams are borderline illegal here.
Since Google would want to supply customers around the world, the Google Glass was just a bad idea.
Personally I think that it is a good thing for society if people can tell if someone is recording and that any equipment, that lets you record other people without any obvious sign that you do, is breaking an unwritten societal code of conduct.
Hmm, I ended up going online to find “Harry Potter” prescription ready frames (for an Adrian Seidelman cosplay, actually) and they were dirt cheap while still being pretty decent quality. Can’t try them on until they come in the mail, though!
For the record: The idea was you could have, like, schematics overlaid, or a HUD for walking directions. The camera on the modern Enterprise version has its fixed focus set at 0.6m, or just barely at arm’s length, and engages a green LED to indicate when it’s recording. Presumably, these were changes to discourage the taking of “creepshots”.
And you shouldn’t have to pay $300 for a pair of sneakers, and cell phones shouldn’t cost $800 or more. But so long as people are willing to shell out that sort of money, Nike and Apple will keep pricing them that high.
Bruh that’s the realest, I was an optician, they marked up those frames by like 250% what they cost to buy from the manufacturer, and since Luxoticca (Oakley, Ralph Lauren, Ray-Ban, and other brands) corner a huge piece of that market they set the manufacturer cost super high anyways and other brands match that cost. Most frames, even “luxury” frames, are basically the same acetate material as the ones that are fully covered by like, Medicaid. Just a little prettier. Splurge on lenses if your eyes are pretty messed up, but I will never buy frames from an optical clinic again.
Please recognize the stockholm syndrome of expensive healthcare. Purchasing online glasses is a freeing experience. I can vouch for Zenni being a legitimate business.
Mostly they are. Sometimes not, but the number of times I’ve wound up with a bad pair matches my rate of issues with the expensive ones from the stores. It’s just that I can afford to buy glasses a lot more frequently these days because of online sites.
My kids need glasses, and I buy two pairs at a time so when they break one I’ve got a spare on hand, and it’s still much cheaper than buying one pair at the optician/optical store.
the issue with it is in comfort and how they affect your vision beyond correction: you buy them online but you don’t know how they fit on your face or how they are around your periphery. It’s “cheaper” but you might actually be spending money on something that you can’t wear because they don’t fit!
That’s why glasses websites give exact measurements and have tutorials on how to measure your face. You end up getting ones that fit better that what you get in person
Another optician hack – most places will adjust frames even if you’ve never bought glasses from them, they just might make you sign a form saying they can’t replace them if they break during adjustment. I stan Zenni.
I’ve never been able to order a set of frames online. My prescription is so strong the frames have to be custom made. Apparently a jail somewhere on the east coast according to my optometrist.
Frames are expensive because, just like diamonds, ONE company has bought out all the other companies or used their leverage to bully optometrists so they won’t offer the cheaper options. It’s disgusting. The best pair of frames I ever had was a $30 pair I bought in South Korea in the 1980s. Just kept replacing the lenses as needed. I was so pissed when I lost them in an car accident in 2013.
I know what you mean. My mom got an eye exam and they made her buy glasses from them on her insurance (which cost the insurance company something like $600). I get my glasses from Zenni Optical (search Google). This isn’t an ad, but I feel like people should know about this. My frames were like $7 and the prescription itself only cost about $24 or so, and with shipping it came up to $38. It came with UV protection, blue-blocker, scratch resistance and a hydrophobic coating for easy cleaning. You can also get transition lenses for like $40 more. Whenever I talk to anyone about their glasses, they keep saying that they could have bought the same pair for about $300 or something ridiculous like that.

Even more people just barely getting by than normal. I can plunk down a couple of thousand for a computer now and not think a lot about it, but for most of my life that simply wasn’t true. When people are in college or just out, the budget doesn’t stretch that far.
Insurance should cover large, unpredictable expenses. Routine, easily predicted expenses should be paid out of pocket. You know you need an eye exam every year, so it should be part of your regular budget. Paying through insurance just adds a layer of administration and reduces the incentive to shop around for the best value. Both of these factors drive up costs.
yeah, you don’t get to decide what people “should” do with their expenses. you don’t know any of us, our lives, or our financial situations.
also, as people have said, shopping around isn’t an option for specialized prescriptions. stop blaming consumers for shitty situations created by corporations.

And it’s nothing like buying a computer or phone, where the prices are very clearly posted, and not hidden behind some byzantine bait-and-switch. And also doing so while its difficult to see small print, because you’re looking for an actual medical device, not a gaming platform.
The problem with that approach with healthcare in particular is that it disincentivizes people from getting that routine preventative care, since they have to pay out of pocket.
This leads to things not getting caught early or prevented entirely and thus costs much more overall than covering the routine care does.
And in this case in particular it makes no sense at all – we’re talking about buying glasses, not the exam. Should Joyce have budgeted for glasses when she didn’t even know she had vision problems? On a college student’s budget?
No kidding! I was shocked at how much more expensive my lenses got when he doc switched me from single prescription to Progressive lenses. (modern form on bi-focals) OUCH.

If one’s partner is aiming there, I don’t think one needs to worry about birth control. Severe stinging, perhaps. I suppose the glasses might help shield one from that at least.
This is by folks who have, for one reason or another, agreed to commit egregious violence on behalf of (and only on the orders of) their government in exchange for pay. That is what I had to agree to at least, and I imagine their contract isn’t too different. Yep. Flawed as he is, Hank was not going to stand for this. He clearly has the both the ability and the wish to become a better person, but he knowingly let things last for way longer than they should have.
That’s my read, too. He’s probably reflecting on all the “little things” he let slide over the years, and the contrast between the way John and Joyce were raised.
Yes-and, Hank’s personal brand of Christianity may frown on divorce. He might think he’s failing his kids, and failing his marriage, to have chosen to divorce his wife. He vowed til death do them part, and he’s ashamed to be breaking his vows (even though he’s breaking them for a super ironclad reason. Shame doesn’t tend to listen to reasons).
Judging by early-Joyce’s views on marriage, Hank likely thinks he has the religious duty to provide for his wife and be the head of the household and make their decisions. He failed to control Carol, and he’s not fulfilling his “God-appointed” role.
In some communities, people stay in their dysfunctional marriages forever, or else they can’t stay in the community… so he may not have any divorced friends or relatives at all.
Even if he successfully rejects ALL of this cultural programming, this is not how he imagined his marriage going. It’s sad, he’s sad.
I hope so too, but he’s accustomed to being with his wife nearly all the time. Even if his adult kids are calling him and coming over for lunch occasionally, that’s not the same as living together with a partner.
It’s not like Carol can’t keep herself occupied for the rest of her days making excuses for the remaining members of her church, anyway.
I’m still curious about how much of what John told his family about his fiance is true, as he has yet to introduce her to his parents yet she serves as a frequent excuse for not having time to see his family…And Jordan. What “works” – for now, and certain values of – for Becky is not really Joyce’s style. She’s not the sort who goes around being loud and wacky to try to hide her insecurity.
Divorce was mentioned in the list of changes Joyce was ranting about.
Hank could feel ashamed of his soon to be ex wife, of not being able to make it work, of her choices, of his or his not seeing the extremes earlier. So he still may be the one to initiate the divorce. Besides, shame is an emotion, and those aren’t rational.
Becky is, indeed, less and less likeable after the timeslip. But then, so are most of the characters. I don’t know what happened, but they are mostly rubbing me the wrong way now.
Honestly, Hank is probably ashamed of all of the things you mentioned and more. A failed marriage, especially with a partner like Carol, is a whole can of worms, and then sprinkle on Hank’s religious leanings paired with the literal trauma of your child being abducted… I really wonder, how religious Hank would have ended up if he hadn’t paired off with Carol?
Also, yeah, I am all Becky-ed out. She was never my favorite character, but she is downright insufferable right now. I see how this is supposed to be her expressing insecurity, but I really wish we could get her in smaller doses right now.
So, I totally support Joyce getting glasses that she, personally, feels comfortable with and will enjoy, but…
Those glasses, specifically, are hideous. She doesn’t need to get the cute glasses from before, but hopefully she’ll look for something that’s less of a “pre-emptive strike”.
As off as these are, I think they’re closer to Joyce than the ones Dotty chose. Slightly more toned down colour and less dramatic ovals and catseye, but similar size lenses and face placement (other than the upper tips of those ovals) and I think it would be a good look that while obviously glasses would still show her eyes nicely.
If she does want unobtrusive ones still though, I wouldn’t go with wire drame like dorothy chose. I’d go with half frames (preferably on the upper half) and a neutral colour

to some extent, it’s literally true – the shape of her eyeballs varies from the norm, which causes her to be nearsighted.
however, Becky has a history of trolling and provoking her “best friend” in order to get “amusing” reactions out of her. it’s something that Joyce seems to tolerate and/or accept, but I’ve never been happy about it.

This whole arc is so weird. Like “oh no I don’t wanna get glasses” is an episode of Arthur I remember, and that show is for 4th graders. I get that she’s averse to change but Joyce is not acting her age to a wild extent.
It’s not even really about the glasses. Besides, not every plot can be about serious issues or we get numbed to it. Yeah, she’s being immature about getting glasses, but it’s not a big deal.

Don’t feel bad. It’s my view that the comments section is what each reader thinks and in no way is it limited to ‘original or new responses’. So long as you don’t start asking questions that have been answered a dozen times or something.
Order online! So long as you have your prescription, about the only thing you need that isn’t always on there is your pupillary distance – and you can usually get that in a store, then say you want to shop around and leave (trickier during pandemic – I used the ruler+mirror method)
Loads cheaper. LOADS. I picked up one set with all the fixins (super-thin, all the various coatings), a cheap spare, and a pair of prescription safety glasses for roughly what I would have paid in-store for a single pair.
Though I have heard this can be trickier if your prescription is VERY strong.
And for Joyce it will delay the inevitable for a couple weeks due to processing+shipping times.
Yeah I have a few spare pairs of much cheaper glasses I got online and they never seem to fit quite right compared to the ones I get at my optometrist. Maybe depends on the prescription (my vision is moderately bad + astigmatism) or face size/shape? I have uneven ears and a small face so the optometrist always has to do a ton of manual adjustment to my frames to get them to sit right.
I am envious of people who can easily order additional pairs online!
Are you serious? Since the beginning. Since she went with her Dad, who had a gun, and was gonna drive her to some conversion camp, or kill her or whatever. She cares about Joyce very much, but I also get that it might be hard for her to get attached right now, after her Dad died, and she basically lost everything (not neccessarily in that order). Having stability will help, and maybe therapy. Is Becky getting therapy?

Helpful tip: The silicone nose pads on my glasses started to rip. Costco offers free replacement nosepads to members.

Disclaimer: I have pretty good vision and usually wear contacts – the plastic pair I got are fine, the metal frames I got were cheap metal frames and are obviously cheap wheel looking at them.
I’ve said it a couple of times so I hope i don’t sound like an ad lol, but glassesshop is pretty good. Cute frames, good lenses, tonnes of coupons and discounts (I’d recommend having honey installed). Only issue is their customer service isnt great and it’ll take some time to craft the lenses and ship them over (it’s shipping from china) but it’s worth it imo.

It’s a thought that occurred to me. The other option is that she selected those frames as being the polar opposite to chose chosen by Dorothy as possible.
I think they’re ones Becky would like. She doesn’t wear glasses so probably doesn’t realise that glasses you wear all the time should be pretty neutral so they go with everything (admittedly Becky might go for it even considering that) and with Joyce’s aversion to glasses she probably wants something more subtle. Maybe she should check bigger but still subtle frames, I prefer teacup shape myself (like a rounded square wider on the top than the bottom. Cat eye shapes are a bit of a statement and red as well!
Thanks to all the comments a few strips back about Chris Pratt and Parks and Recreation I started watching it (up to the 5th series) and its helped me realise what it is about Becky that aggravates me
Becky reminds me of the April Ludgate character (and the similar Brooklyn 99 character Gina Linetti) I find those characters to be mean and nasty people that somehow never get called on their actions (except very mildly) and always somehow get promoted through…reasons?
I know I’m likely wrong about this, but isn’t Becky’s “So *I’ll* call yer Dad an’ ask for the difference” similar to the boundary violation that Dorothy committed in making the eye appointment for Joyce?
Joyce, if you’re gonna spend money on expensive frames, go all out and get those frames that change shape depending on the expression you’re making, those are really cool!

I bought some frames that were more than my insurance wod cover, and they said that I could pay the difference when they came in. My paycheck was short that month, so I didn’t go in right away. When I finally had the cash, the optometrist had died and the practice closed.
It’s been 10 years and I still haven’t gotten a new prescription
After 17 years of wearing glasses I tried contacts this year, which involved me sitting in an optometrist’s office for two hours, eyes red and leaking from both physical and emotional irritation, while I taught an increasingly embarrassed optician the startling rainbow of swearwords.
My point is… I hope Joyce is freaked out enough about glasses that she tries contacts, because it will be hilarious.

I don’t think either set of glasses fit her. You have to find your own set with personality. She isn’t her family, but she isn’t Becky either. This is a great set up to show that.
Everyone who wears glasses should make at least one horrible choice of frames at least once during their life, just to know what it’s like! I still cringe–and giggle–at pictures of me from about age twenty.
Of course, it’s probably best not to do it for your first pair, especially not if you’re uncomfortable with the whole concept of wearing glasses. But at some point.
As someone who has a lot of very loud glasses (my usuals are bright red and heart shaped), joyce, just take the prescription and get out of there and order some glasses online. they got WAY cooler lookin frames for way cheaper.
A kid every other year would only take 10 years. If he started at 30 and finished at 40 then he would be 60 when the youngest was 20. They might have started when both were around 25 and Joyce might be 19. There’s plenty of time so I’m not sure where there’s a problem.

i got my prescription (covered under insurance), grabbed my copy including pupil distance (which i had to ask for, it wasn’t on the form), went home and popped onto zenni, uploaded a good selfie, “tried on” like infinite frames and ordered perfectly good glasses for like $40.
hell, i ordered two more, a “reading/computer” set and a “progressive” set, also $40 each.

There seems to be several levels to this.
Becky’s strategy of hiding something that you think is weird by distracting them with something even more weird is sound as far as it goes.
The chances of this working for Joyce, however, is just about nill and the glasses currently on her face will not survive a look in the mirror.
Becky’s thought processes relating to the divorce are cynical, possibly not altogether serious, but also undoubtedly shaped from being a strong-willed person used to expressing herself in a repressive environment where she had to go over under around and through in order exert any control or influence on her situation.
They’re like a red version of Phoebe Heyerdahl’s glasses, or maybe Amber’s.

Also totally been there on the insurance thing. Nothing sucks more than picking out frames only to learn you can only really choose from like one rack. One thing they don’t tell you about glasses and that they can be stupidly expensive for no justifiable reason at least to me.
I can respect lenses being expensive depending on the prescription.
Frames, however, should never be above $50. My uninformed opinion, of course.
Glasses like a lot of things are also a sort of fashion accessory so you’re really not paying for the function but the design. And of course like any accessory they can put stupid stuff in it like gold or LED’s. Lenses don’t escape it either. Everything from scratch proof, to those transition lenses that are also sunglasses or bifocals or any focals effect the price. It’s a whole industry. Google even tried to do glasses once. I wonder whatever happened to that? It was news for like a week then kinda vanished.
Google Glass is an attempt at Augmented Reality. it’s still available for Enterprise solutions, but as far as I know, the Commercial release was permanently sidelined due to privacy concerns. To wit: People beating Glass users on the street because they thought the user was recording and felt their right to privacy extended to destroying any recording equipment they could see, even if it wasn’t in recording mode.
In fairness, a decent number of Glasses users were being super-obnoxious about their right to record everything they could see, regardless of whether uncomfortable they were making other people.
Violence might be taking things too far, but building a camera into something that can’t easily be put away without significantly inconveniencing the user was a terrible idea, unless the idea is to ensure a certain set of people get to take creepshots without anyone being able to tell them to knock it off.
On the street (actually, anywhere beside a private home and/or business) you don’t *have* a right to privacy.
That aside, those glasses are hideous.
Also, fun fact: glasses frames are actually dirt cheap to manufacture. The reason they’re so expensive is that one conglomerate, Luxottica, owns pretty much every goddamned eyewear company in the world, particularly in the US.

And it’s still rude to go around bars recording things you think might be amusing without the consent of the people present, even if it’s technically legal. Nor is appropriate to follow people you think are attractive in hopes of getting a better picture of them.
If those glasses were to ever go mainstream, we would absolutely need to to revisit legislation regarding the circumstances under which you can record things, because most of our society isn’t built around the idea that you’re being recorded 24/7, and nobody wants their entire life defined by a clip that went viral one time.
I mean, some people did overreact, certainly – but there were an uncomfortable number of people refusing to acknowledge that you really should stop recording when other people ask you to.
This is not necessarily true around the world. In Germany you very much have a right to your own picture even if you are in a public place. People can take a photo of something if you are on the photo but not the center of attention, people can not take a photo that clearly has you as the object of attention without your permission. Even Dashcams are borderline illegal here.
Since Google would want to supply customers around the world, the Google Glass was just a bad idea.
Personally I think that it is a good thing for society if people can tell if someone is recording and that any equipment, that lets you record other people without any obvious sign that you do, is breaking an unwritten societal code of conduct.
Hmm, I ended up going online to find “Harry Potter” prescription ready frames (for an Adrian Seidelman cosplay, actually) and they were dirt cheap while still being pretty decent quality. Can’t try them on until they come in the mail, though!
For the record: The idea was you could have, like, schematics overlaid, or a HUD for walking directions. The camera on the modern Enterprise version has its fixed focus set at 0.6m, or just barely at arm’s length, and engages a green LED to indicate when it’s recording. Presumably, these were changes to discourage the taking of “creepshots”.
And you shouldn’t have to pay $300 for a pair of sneakers, and cell phones shouldn’t cost $800 or more. But so long as people are willing to shell out that sort of money, Nike and Apple will keep pricing them that high.

Bruh that’s the realest, I was an optician, they marked up those frames by like 250% what they cost to buy from the manufacturer, and since Luxoticca (Oakley, Ralph Lauren, Ray-Ban, and other brands) corner a huge piece of that market they set the manufacturer cost super high anyways and other brands match that cost. Most frames, even “luxury” frames, are basically the same acetate material as the ones that are fully covered by like, Medicaid. Just a little prettier. Splurge on lenses if your eyes are pretty messed up, but I will never buy frames from an optical clinic again.
Frames at most optometrists are mostly ~designer~. You can get glasses online for like ten bucks.

Mostly they are. Sometimes not, but the number of times I’ve wound up with a bad pair matches my rate of issues with the expensive ones from the stores. It’s just that I can afford to buy glasses a lot more frequently these days because of online sites.
My kids need glasses, and I buy two pairs at a time so when they break one I’ve got a spare on hand, and it’s still much cheaper than buying one pair at the optician/optical store.
I can vouch for glassesshop. Both frames i got were sturdy despite being thin and the lenses were high quality
the issue with it is in comfort and how they affect your vision beyond correction: you buy them online but you don’t know how they fit on your face or how they are around your periphery. It’s “cheaper” but you might actually be spending money on something that you can’t wear because they don’t fit!

Another optician hack – most places will adjust frames even if you’ve never bought glasses from them, they just might make you sign a form saying they can’t replace them if they break during adjustment. I stan Zenni.
I’ve never been able to order a set of frames online. My prescription is so strong the frames have to be custom made. Apparently a jail somewhere on the east coast according to my optometrist.

Frames are expensive because, just like diamonds, ONE company has bought out all the other companies or used their leverage to bully optometrists so they won’t offer the cheaper options. It’s disgusting. The best pair of frames I ever had was a $30 pair I bought in South Korea in the 1980s. Just kept replacing the lenses as needed. I was so pissed when I lost them in an car accident in 2013.
I know what you mean. My mom got an eye exam and they made her buy glasses from them on her insurance (which cost the insurance company something like $600). I get my glasses from Zenni Optical (search Google). This isn’t an ad, but I feel like people should know about this. My frames were like $7 and the prescription itself only cost about $24 or so, and with shipping it came up to $38. It came with UV protection, blue-blocker, scratch resistance and a hydrophobic coating for easy cleaning. You can also get transition lenses for like $40 more. Whenever I talk to anyone about their glasses, they keep saying that they could have bought the same pair for about $300 or something ridiculous like that.
The frames, maybe, but the lenses will still cost.

Insurance should cover large, unpredictable expenses. Routine, easily predicted expenses should be paid out of pocket. You know you need an eye exam every year, so it should be part of your regular budget. Paying through insurance just adds a layer of administration and reduces the incentive to shop around for the best value. Both of these factors drive up costs.
yeah, you don’t get to decide what people “should” do with their expenses. you don’t know any of us, our lives, or our financial situations.

And it’s nothing like buying a computer or phone, where the prices are very clearly posted, and not hidden behind some byzantine bait-and-switch. And also doing so while its difficult to see small print, because you’re looking for an actual medical device, not a gaming platform.
The problem with that approach with healthcare in particular is that it disincentivizes people from getting that routine preventative care, since they have to pay out of pocket.
This leads to things not getting caught early or prevented entirely and thus costs much more overall than covering the routine care does.
And in this case in particular it makes no sense at all – we’re talking about buying glasses, not the exam. Should Joyce have budgeted for glasses when she didn’t even know she had vision problems? On a college student’s budget?

Every character’s design changed significantly, except perhaps Amber, and all of the characters changed toward a more uniform style.

Yep. Flawed as he is, Hank was not going to stand for this. He clearly has the both the ability and the wish to become a better person, but he knowingly let things last for way longer than they should have.
That’s my read, too. He’s probably reflecting on all the “little things” he let slide over the years, and the contrast between the way John and Joyce were raised.
Yes-and, Hank’s personal brand of Christianity may frown on divorce. He might think he’s failing his kids, and failing his marriage, to have chosen to divorce his wife. He vowed til death do them part, and he’s ashamed to be breaking his vows (even though he’s breaking them for a super ironclad reason. Shame doesn’t tend to listen to reasons).
Judging by early-Joyce’s views on marriage, Hank likely thinks he has the religious duty to provide for his wife and be the head of the household and make their decisions. He failed to control Carol, and he’s not fulfilling his “God-appointed” role.
In some communities, people stay in their dysfunctional marriages forever, or else they can’t stay in the community… so he may not have any divorced friends or relatives at all.
Even if he successfully rejects ALL of this cultural programming, this is not how he imagined his marriage going. It’s sad, he’s sad.

What “works” – for now, and certain values of – for Becky is not really Joyce’s style. She’s not the sort who goes around being loud and wacky to try to hide her insecurity.

Hank could feel ashamed of his soon to be ex wife, of not being able to make it work, of her choices, of his or his not seeing the extremes earlier. So he still may be the one to initiate the divorce. Besides, shame is an emotion, and those aren’t rational.

Honestly, Hank is probably ashamed of all of the things you mentioned and more. A failed marriage, especially with a partner like Carol, is a whole can of worms, and then sprinkle on Hank’s religious leanings paired with the literal trauma of your child being abducted… I really wonder, how religious Hank would have ended up if he hadn’t paired off with Carol?
Also, yeah, I am all Becky-ed out. She was never my favorite character, but she is downright insufferable right now. I see how this is supposed to be her expressing insecurity, but I really wish we could get her in smaller doses right now.

So, I totally support Joyce getting glasses that she, personally, feels comfortable with and will enjoy, but…
Those glasses, specifically, are hideous. She doesn’t need to get the cute glasses from before, but hopefully she’ll look for something that’s less of a “pre-emptive strike”.
As off as these are, I think they’re closer to Joyce than the ones Dotty chose. Slightly more toned down colour and less dramatic ovals and catseye, but similar size lenses and face placement (other than the upper tips of those ovals) and I think it would be a good look that while obviously glasses would still show her eyes nicely.
If she does want unobtrusive ones still though, I wouldn’t go with wire drame like dorothy chose. I’d go with half frames (preferably on the upper half) and a neutral colour

however, Becky has a history of trolling and provoking her “best friend” in order to get “amusing” reactions out of her. it’s something that Joyce seems to tolerate and/or accept, but I’ve never been happy about it.

This whole arc is so weird. Like “oh no I don’t wanna get glasses” is an episode of Arthur I remember, and that show is for 4th graders. I get that she’s averse to change but Joyce is not acting her age to a wild extent.
It’s not even really about the glasses. Besides, not every plot can be about serious issues or we get numbed to it. Yeah, she’s being immature about getting glasses, but it’s not a big deal.

Order online! So long as you have your prescription, about the only thing you need that isn’t always on there is your pupillary distance – and you can usually get that in a store, then say you want to shop around and leave (trickier during pandemic – I used the ruler+mirror method)
Loads cheaper. LOADS. I picked up one set with all the fixins (super-thin, all the various coatings), a cheap spare, and a pair of prescription safety glasses for roughly what I would have paid in-store for a single pair.
Though I have heard this can be trickier if your prescription is VERY strong.
And for Joyce it will delay the inevitable for a couple weeks due to processing+shipping times.
Yeah I have a few spare pairs of much cheaper glasses I got online and they never seem to fit quite right compared to the ones I get at my optometrist. Maybe depends on the prescription (my vision is moderately bad + astigmatism) or face size/shape? I have uneven ears and a small face so the optometrist always has to do a ton of manual adjustment to my frames to get them to sit right.
I am envious of people who can easily order additional pairs online!

Having stability will help, and maybe therapy. Is Becky getting therapy?

Are there other online eyeglass vendors besides Zenni Optical that anyone here has used? I’m not unhappy with Zenni or anything, but I wonder if anyone knows of and has used other options.
Helpful tip: The silicone nose pads on my glasses started to rip. Costco offers free replacement nosepads to members.

Disclaimer: I have pretty good vision and usually wear contacts – the plastic pair I got are fine, the metal frames I got were cheap metal frames and are obviously cheap wheel looking at them.
I’ve said it a couple of times so I hope i don’t sound like an ad lol, but glassesshop is pretty good. Cute frames, good lenses, tonnes of coupons and discounts (I’d recommend having honey installed). Only issue is their customer service isnt great and it’ll take some time to craft the lenses and ship them over (it’s shipping from china) but it’s worth it imo.

I think they’re ones Becky would like. She doesn’t wear glasses so probably doesn’t realise that glasses you wear all the time should be pretty neutral so they go with everything (admittedly Becky might go for it even considering that) and with Joyce’s aversion to glasses she probably wants something more subtle. Maybe she should check bigger but still subtle frames, I prefer teacup shape myself (like a rounded square wider on the top than the bottom. Cat eye shapes are a bit of a statement and red as well!
Though I seldom used it, I loved my switch-it for the option to have something eyecatching one day and practically invisible the next.

I bought some frames that were more than my insurance wod cover, and they said that I could pay the difference when they came in. My paycheck was short that month, so I didn’t go in right away. When I finally had the cash, the optometrist had died and the practice closed.

After 17 years of wearing glasses I tried contacts this year, which involved me sitting in an optometrist’s office for two hours, eyes red and leaking from both physical and emotional irritation, while I taught an increasingly embarrassed optician the startling rainbow of swearwords.
My point is… I hope Joyce is freaked out enough about glasses that she tries contacts, because it will be hilarious.

Everyone who wears glasses should make at least one horrible choice of frames at least once during their life, just to know what it’s like! I still cringe–and giggle–at pictures of me from about age twenty.
Of course, it’s probably best not to do it for your first pair, especially not if you’re uncomfortable with the whole concept of wearing glasses. But at some point.
As someone who has a lot of very loud glasses (my usuals are bright red and heart shaped), joyce, just take the prescription and get out of there and order some glasses online. they got WAY cooler lookin frames for way cheaper.

A kid every other year would only take 10 years. If he started at 30 and finished at 40 then he would be 60 when the youngest was 20. They might have started when both were around 25 and Joyce might be 19. There’s plenty of time so I’m not sure where there’s a problem.

i got my prescription (covered under insurance), grabbed my copy including pupil distance (which i had to ask for, it wasn’t on the form), went home and popped onto zenni, uploaded a good selfie, “tried on” like infinite frames and ordered perfectly good glasses for like $40.
hell, i ordered two more, a “reading/computer” set and a “progressive” set, also $40 each.
