Yeah, I think Joyce should probably learn this stuff somehow and the internet is not the best place. Yeah, there’s different sensitivity ranges for people. Some really like direct stimulation, so to speak, while some find it uncomfortable and are more indirect. Some like insertion, some ride pillows or otherwise get off without it. Vibrators are sought by many, but like the first thing, some find it uncomfortable. There’s a variety of tastes.
Penis-having folks have some variety, too, in approaches, but it’s usually permutations of the same sort of thing, or variables like prostate stimulation being something some do and others don’t. It doesn’t seem typically as varied.

I’m not 100% convinced that Dotty plans for them to go sit on the washers (though I’m also not denying it), but on this note I’ve never heard of anyone in real life enjoying that? I’ve only heard of a handful of people that bothered trying, admittedly. There’s 2 options. Either she was preparing to change anyway and figured “if I’m gonna pull my pants down to pee anyway may as well just take the whole thing off” or she just peed an awful lot.
I’m probably (definitely) overthinking this; but there’s two sets of muscles that control how one pees: one that keeps the urethral opening closed until you consciously decide to open it (sphincter muscles) and another that squeezes the bladder to help empty it (bladder muscles). The latter set allows people to pee more forcefully.
Generally when one loses control and pees on themselves [when you sneezed or laughed or coughed too hard], it’s because you “let go” of the sphincter muscles you were keeping closed until it was appropriate. This usually results in a dribble of urine escaping until you tighten your sphincter again.
It’s not common to involuntarily let go of the entire contents of the bladder unless one is completely incapacitated by drugs or alcohol or a major injury; or in some extreme cases, fear and/or trauma.

I have a friend who at a party she might be talking to her husband or another friend and I’ll come up behind her and start giving her a backrub. She might or might not glance over her shoulder to see who it is and she might or might not say something like “a little higher and to the left.” Although it was in completely different locations at slightly different times, late 60’s for her and early 70’s for me, we both functioned in similar subcultures where, among friends, this was a friendly non-threatening gesture, and further we know that about each other.

Even ignoring the specifics Alongcameaspider pointed out, doing something far outside of social/contextual norms with no warning and thinking, “The boundaries will be established later” is not a good approach.

What I do disagree with is people’s assumptions that their particular boundaries, whatever they might be, should apply universally. Specifically to other people, neither of which are them.
That’s not actually what’s happening, at least in the vast majority of comments I’m seeing? People are talking about Joyce’s boundaries, especially as have been demonstrated in recent comics with Dorothy. They are not saying “I would not be okay with this, so therefore Joyce would not be,” much less “No one would be.” They are talking about how they see a fictional character’s boundaries.
Many others are going with reactions that are not as boundary directed, or that this is not a good approach to establishing boundaries.

remember: Joyce was lusting for Ethan once and had a dream of sexy Ken doll Ethan, asking him to “rub [his] thingy on [her] tummy” and then seeing him morph into Ryan. then wake up in a panic attack. this is a hallmark victim-of-abuse signifier that Joyce’s not-actually-new repressed lust is 1) having a resurgence from her hormones and age range, 2) is becoming confused with the trauma, and 3) she can’t not NOT think about it either.
so basically, Dotty is ACTUALLY trying to give her a new coping tool or mechanism…but it’s REALLY awkward, a trained therapist should be doing it, and neither of them probably wants Dotty to fill in for one. (also, Dorothy isn’t going to do as well at it as she hopes she will, because she’s a flawed untrained amateur.)
I think you’re right about a lot of this, especially the very last bit, but I’m not convinced this is how or why Dorothy’s going to go about it. Considering the context of the last couple (in comic) days, I think it’s more about “Joyce needs to learn to jack it so she doesn’t fuck Joe specifically” rather than “Joyce needs to learn this for coping and also to understand her body”

There’s 2 options. Either she was preparing to change anyway and figured “if I’m gonna pull my pants down to pee anyway may as well just take the whole thing off” or she just peed an awful lot.
I’m probably (definitely) overthinking this; but there’s two sets of muscles that control how one pees: one that keeps the urethral opening closed until you consciously decide to open it (sphincter muscles) and another that squeezes the bladder to help empty it (bladder muscles). The latter set allows people to pee more forcefully.
Generally when one loses control and pees on themselves [when you sneezed or laughed or coughed too hard], it’s because you “let go” of the sphincter muscles you were keeping closed until it was appropriate. This usually results in a dribble of urine escaping until you tighten your sphincter again.
It’s not common to involuntarily let go of the entire contents of the bladder unless one is completely incapacitated by drugs or alcohol or a major injury; or in some extreme cases, fear and/or trauma.

I have a friend who at a party she might be talking to her husband or another friend and I’ll come up behind her and start giving her a backrub. I would not place bets on where this is going because, one, Willis is a tease, and two, Willis is a master story-teller.

That’s not actually what’s happening, at least in the vast majority of comments I’m seeing? People are talking about Joyce’s boundaries, especially as have been demonstrated in recent comics with Dorothy. They are not saying “I would not be okay with this, so therefore Joyce would not be,” much less “No one would be.” They are talking about how they see a fictional character’s boundaries.
Many others are going with reactions that are not as boundary directed, or that this is not a good approach to establishing boundaries.
