This is one of those scenes where I’m both very conscious that Dina is a fictional character, but also extremely impressed with her in a real-feeling way.

Dina is not to be trifled with.

I knew a guy like this in the army. A true grey-man. Dude could move in and out of groups and places and it’d be anywhere between 5min and an hour before people noticed uf he was or wasn’t present.

The fun little loophole, though, is that you need to be in possession of pirated material to commit that crime. If you are streaming pirated material and the actual file is never on a device you own, you are not committing a crime, you are merely benefitting from somebody *else* committing that crime. If a graffiti artist defaces an ugly wall with a beautiful mural without the permission of the owner or anybody else who would need to give approval for a public mural, and you drive across town to see it when you normally wouldn’t be in that part of town, and even snap a picture of it to save as your phone wallpaper and share on social media, you are benefitting from crime but doing nothing illegal. Same thing if you enjoy pirated media but never actually possess or distribute pirated media.

Also, because pirating media is so easy, unless you’re actively burning DVDs and selling them to people, it isn’t worth the corporation’s time to go after everyone who Pirates movies and music for their own personal use. They would spend far more in legal fees than they would ever get out of mostly broke college students.

And every time they pay a developer good money to come up with new DRM, a wave of passionate and possibly autistic hackers deacend upon the new DRM, strip it to the bone and leave it’s defeated corpse on the corporation’s doorstep as a warning to others. Lol

Uh, no. That isn’t how streaming media works. When you stream a video, your computer still downloads that video file. The only difference with streaming is that instead of waiting for the complete file to download before viewing, you watch it as the data flows in and then discard the data shortly after. You still download and possess the entire video, just not all at the same time.

i mean, if she did get caught maybe you’d get in less trouble for leaving money versus just stealing on top of it, but would’ve been a power move to just have taken joyce’s wallet without noticing and paying with /her/ money

Altho i wish i could be invisible to random ppl on the street but otherwise going ‘unnoticed’ would be more of a pain compared to just looking underage depending on the situation. or if ppl are so ‘forgettable’ they can order food and just dine and dash xD

I was about to call this a fib, when I realized that it could be read to ways:

I first read it as “a half-mile, which was from A to B, and then back the same way in 3 minutes”, which would have been way faster than the world record for the mile.

Now I believe you meant “a half-mile, which was from A to B and back, in three minutes”, which is totally believable.

We also don’t know how long Becky and Joyce have been bickering about this since the last page. I once checked for walky-related reasons and the estimated walking distance from Read Hall to the village pantry down the block and across the street is 5 minutes according to google maps. 5 minutes there, 5 minutes back, and probably around 5 minutes to get to the front exit makes it roughly 15 minutes, give or take a bit for getting whatever you get inside. Having said that, if she didn’t take the elevator to the ground level and instead took the stairs down to the second level where there’s a side exit we’ve seen them take a few times, that could shave off 2-3 minutes, and if she ran or jogged to the village pantry and back, then you could easily shave off 2-3 minutes of travel time either way.

Joyce and Becky aren’t standing in the same position anymore, suggesting at least some time has passed, and both are known to stubbornly bicker and hold onto things way longer than is reasonable, especially with each other. They could easily have been at this for the 6-15 minutes Dina probably took to complete her mission, and it was just left out since it would have been redundant with panel one of this page, and also less funny.

The place is called “The Tick Tock” and it opened after WWII when the crossroads were dirt and they were surrounded by farmland and trees…Now it’s surrounded by two 3-lane highways and run down apartment buildings (built in the late 50’s) occupied by locals and grad students.

Yeah, Joyce has got herself full-on into “what a tangled web” territory by lying, which she pretends to hate. When Becky confronted her for not taking Becky hijinking she could have told the truth: “I needed to have a heart-to-heart talk with Dorothy, and your stupid enemies schtick would have prevented that by making her defensive.” Then she wouldn’t be in this mess.

I disagree: Becky would not appreciate it nor take it well. She’d see it as a bad thing when there’s no reason for Joyce to feel bad about. She wanted to do something for a friend in need. It was THEIR time to bond. There should have been no reason for Becky to cross her mind in the same way that Dorothy should not cross her mind when she does something special just for Becky.

Can you imagine if during a special bonding time between Joyce and Becky, Joyce suggested to bring in Dorothy? Becky would NOT be happy.

Oh, most def! That’s what explains it. It’s super cause-consequence and Becky has been shaped by grief like, a lot.

… Doesn’t mean the reaction justified, tho. Our emotions are valid, and that means we have a right to feel them. But acting on them, and/or making everyone else’s Thing, that’s a choice – and it’s not always the Healthy ™ one.

I have had Joyce’s issue in the past, which is you start lying to avoid hurting someone’s feelings because you were raised to believe white lies are better than the truth. As it turns out, being honest but authentic is a better strat all around, but even today it’s hard to shake that internal core training towards “kind” deception

    • Psychie
      Psychie
      June 8, 2024 at 8:17 pm | #

I’m not sure Joyce is “lying” per se, sure what genuinely happened was she just wasn’t considering Becky at all, but Becky wanted a reason not to have invited her, so Joyce provided one. “I didn’t think of you” isn’t a *reason*, it’s an *explanation*. There have absolutely been times I didn’t consciously consider a decision, and then later when asked to explain it I came up with justifications that had nothing to do with the actual thought process in the moment, and it was definitely *not* any kind of deception, it was just the first thing that came to mind when asked for a reason when I never really had one in the first place. You think “why would I have done that?” and then the answer you come up with retroactively becomes the reason since it makes sense, at least in your head, the fact that it was never part of your thought process before hand is irrelevant. Lying is when you intentionally make false statements with the intent to deceive, this is an attempt to explain something retroactively that wasn’t done with conscious reasoning. Some people are good at accurately guessing their subconscious motives, others are not, practice and context can both have a large impact as well. Joyce is fairly new to interrogating her own motives and thought processes, and in the middle of a confrontation with your best friend that you inadvertently hurt is not a context particularly conducive to proper introspection.

Joyce is trying, failing miserably, but she is trying. It’s going to take a while before Joyce realizes she is not doing the right thing, but to her credit she did tell Dina she was going to do her best to treat her better.

        • Psychie
          Psychie
          June 8, 2024 at 8:20 pm | #

And I think that’s why Dina’s response was to prove Joyce wrong, and not to call her out like they had previously agreed. She recognized that Joyce wasn’t coming from a place of malice and was actively trying (albeit failing) to be as diplomatic about the issue as she could. Arguing with Joyce wouldn’t be helpful, but proving her assumption incorrect is a great way to resolve the conflict. It’s cutting the knot, so to speak.

Added bonus, now that they have alcohol they can go back to one of their rooms and drink together now, thus resolving the core of the conflict between Joyce and Becky since they get to do the thing Becky felt left out on.

I strongly suspect that taking booze you can’t legally buy is still technically a crime even if you leave enough money behind.

I think we are into the murky area of the distinction between “crimes that are a violation of laws I think are stupid” and “crimes that are a violation of laws I agree with.”

And now, Dina has done a crime while leaving Becky out. Is Becky going to blow up at Dina now, too?

That said (and judging from Becky’s grin in the last panel), Dina’s initial crime was in facilitation of the additional “let’s all go underage drink this hooch now” crime they might be about to commit, so maybe that mitigates Becky being left out of the first crime.

Although kind of covered by the “underage drinking” thing, but didn’t Billy/Jennifer actually get into an accident while driving drunk (prior to the start of the comics)

You also have Ruth (slapped one of the people on the floor, which would be assault)

And if you are going to count Becky for breaking into her own house then Joyce and Jocelyn should both be included too since they were accomplices

And Walky MIGHT be considered a co-conspirator when amber hacked into the school to change his grades.

That very much depends on where you’re from. Indiana makes that distinction, but a place like e.g. Canada would call both actions assault, so the definitions in a global discussion like this can get mixed up.

Except it’s not a global discussion, the story explicitly takes place in Indiana so the laws in Canada are irrelevant unless we’re speaking about crimes that Ruth did while in Canada or we’re worried about her getting extradited or deported for her crimes since some countries might arrest you for things you did in other countries if they are also illegal in your home country. No idea if Canada does that, though.

Operating a car under the influence is an entirely different crime than underage drinking, so Billie definitely gets a tick (and that carries over to Jennifer, for that matter).

        Mike committed blackmail and assault.

On an extreme technicality, Joe and Roz videotaping Danny’s foot while he was asleep and had a reasonable expectation of privacy might violate some state laws.

How is using Danny’s foot to hold the camera a case of “invasion of privacy”? I assume the camera was pointed at Joe’s bed and Danny wasn’t in frame.

(There may be some sort of “interference” or “assault/battery” case to be made, since they invaded his personal space, but i don’t think that counts as a “privacy” thing)

Indiana is a single party consent state for the purposes of recording both audio and video, Danny did not need to know he was on camera for Joe to record him since Joe consented to being on camera. Now the fact that it was a *porn* might change things a bit, as I’m pretty sure you need explicit consent from all involved parties to film them performing a sex act, which I think might be covered by a different part of the legal code than normal privacy and recording laws (I am not a lawyer), but whether Danny’s foot being in-frame *counts* as performing a sex act when he was simply in the room is a bit more dubious. I have no idea if there would even exist precedent for that.

Read Hall is a mixed-gender dorm, students are separated by hallway, not by building. Still public indecency and like, it doesn’t matter what gender you’re exposing yourself to if they don’t wanna see it, so it’s a moot point anyway.

“women’s dormitory”. Read hall is a co-ed dormitory, not a “women’s dormitory”, as that phrasing does in fact refer to having a separate dormitory building and not merely separate halls or wings. There isn’t even anything preventing men from being in that part of the building since they aren’t even on a different floor with keycards that only work on the relevant floors, but if they were separated by floor “women’s dormitory” would still be incorrect since it would actually be “the women’s floor of the dormitory” as, once again, it is all one single, co-ed dormitory. You can’t blame people for thinking you used words to mean what they actually mean rather than how you intended.

      Walky committed battery against Asher.

      Sarah committed battery against Raidah.

Mike and Joyce committed battery against Joe.

Amber and Amazi-Girl: So much battery.

Dorothy, Jennifer, Joe, Ruth, Walky, Malaya, and a bunch of others I don’t remember or who are on the list for something else have all engaged in underage drinking. Meredith and Carla have done pot.

Jason knowingly furbished alcohol to a minor. Also, a bunch of violations regarding his work visa.

As mentioned, Danny did some public indecency.

Galasso’s got some issues with employment laws.

John seems to have embezzled a car.

Becky violated the health code, and also hacked a congresswoman’s Twitter. (I still refuse to call it X.) Also, at least one campaign finance violation.

Mary stole a pie from Carla. (More seriously, I’m pretty sure that trick with the glue and skates was some sort of crime.)

Robin did a home invasion. And she’s a sex pest.

Faz participated in the Great Kidnapping.

Howard broke into a bunch of girls’ dorm rooms looking for HBO.

Carol attempted to trespass in the dorms.

(And yes, I left a lot of examples out of people who also did some of the things above, but were already on the “did crime” list for other reasons. Also, a bunch of villains who, hopefully, are no longer part of the cast.)

Eh, someone who is “the best” would be able to recognize that that’s a conversation for when they are in private and she’s able to have an open conversation with Becky without any of the walls Becky puts up normally. Becky is performatively silly pretty much constantly in public, even when she’s upset or otherwise acting on a negative emotion, if you want to sincerely get through to her and have any hope of her taking it well, you can’t do it when there’s an audience.

I love this. Joyce’s hypothesis was sound, based on how people have treated Dina (Raidah, sure, but also no one really reacted well when Becky said she was putting the moves on her at Joyce’s dorm party, and those were friends), and Joyce did her awkward best to acknowledge that that’s unfair. Dina tested that hypothesis in the realest way, and continued to assert herself to a world that generally treats her like a kid. I’m excited to see where this goes and it was just. So. Cool. She is not constrained by the rules of the comic — see also, when she was confused that not everyone was aware who Amazigirl is, even though the comic rules say a mask should hide your identity automatically

I mean, to be fair, she was kind of one of the only people who had the opportunity to get a good look at both Amber AND Amazigirl. Amber is quiet and tries to avoid standing out, and Amazigirl is a vigilante operating under cover of darkness implementing stealth and ambush tactics. Dina is one of the relatively few people actually familiar with Amber’s face as her roommate, and is also the person best positioned to get a good look at Amazigirl as she sneaks in and out of the dorm room. Domino masks don’t do a whole lot to disguise your face from those who know you well by themselves, but if you don’t get a great look at one or the other face, then noticing the resemblance isn’t easy. Then there’s the general Clark Kent effect where body-language, vocal patterns, and general demeanor play a huge role in recognition. As an actual split personality, Amazigirl acts different, speaks different, carries herself differently, etc, so it’s not unreasonable for even those familiar with Amber to dismiss the idea of them being the same person because they have nothing in common than some facial features. (even body shape gets distorted by posture and gait)

They absolutely review the tapes (in general) as often as General Tekno thinks they do, it’s just they’re looking more at “Okay, this cashier’s drawer came up as US$50 short and the till to their left and right are both over by US$25; did they each make a handling error and it all evens out, or did till #1 straight up pocket it like a moron (we tell them about the overlapping camera angles, they can’t think they’ll get away with it.) and I need to figure out where the extra US$50 came from?” and only review the tapes for shoplifting if a clerk mentions suspicious activity.

Only if any of them is sufficiently familiar with drinking to actually implement pacing. If they each take a few gulps before passing it, I could easily see them getting through most or all of the bottle before passing out, despite them all being fairly small and inexperienced, it still takes time for alcohol to get through your system, even the strong stuff like that.

My husband was a manager, when a bottle went missing it became “Security Tape City” and he’d have to spend half his shift reviewing every second like he was a consultant for “See No Evil” on ID. And where he worked didn’t even sell liquor.

(So it was only wine, mixers, beer and stuff.) Most places take alcohol theft very seriously. Every coworker I’ve ever known that’s been fired for theft got caught for stealing liquor, it’s basically the retail/restaurant employee of tax evasion. You can steal food, come in late, no call no show 7 days a week but the minute you touch the alcohol it’s over.

It wasn’t about Becky. Dorothy was depressed and Joyce wanted to cheer her up. I guess it kinda shows Joyce really loves Becky if she’s willing to throw herself under the bus by offending Dina to try and preserve Becky’s pride. Maybe. Becky really shouldn’t be jealous though. Does she invite Joyce to everything she’s doing?

My thought was Joyce not thinking of Becky was a sign in itself she didn’t really want her there to help with Dorothy, understandable given her passive agreession. I think it’s more Joyce doesn’t want another fight with Becky and Becky definitely should not be getting jealous over this. Dina however should be both angry at Joyce for throwing her under the bus and at her girlfriend for obsessing over her first crush to the point she wants to be involved in every life event of Joyce’s while Dina is right there.

Yes, ideally Joyce would have called out Becky on her rude possessiveness instead of immediately going on the defensive with some BS. The point was to spend some quality time with Dorothy because her friend was having a terrible time and needed her. It wasn’t just a part,y and inviting Becky would have meant Dorothy would get needled and harassed all night by both Dina and Becky. It’s really too bad Becky is making a scene like she owns Joyce, and Dina is making it all about Dina instead of calling out her girlfriend for being in love with someone else.

What the heck are you even on about, hoss? Dina wouldn’t needle or harass Dorothy, that’s ridiculous. She seems indifferent to Dotty if anything. She’s also not “making it all about Dina” by any stretch. And to top it off, she already knows Becky has a thing for Joyce (and all that that implies), but she’s also intelligent enough to know that people don’t control who they’re in love with and she’s not shitty enough to make that a point of contention.

You just don’t seem to understand this character at all.

I think Joyce doesn’t want to admit she didn’t even think about Becky and was hyper-focused on getting drunk with Dotty. I think it was partly the autisms laser blasting everything into Go go go mode.

Honestly, Becky is missing out on Joyce’s newfound Boyfriend Nintendo Access. They could be in there, gamin’ it up with the crew. Hell, if the Joycons are jank (98% chance) or there’s not enough to go around, Becky might even be able to get her own extra gay set. Add Sal, Danny and Dina into the mix and it’s actually kind of a cozy group date/hangout.

        There are options now.

And lest anyone object on the grounds of affordability, I’m pretty sure Robin already payed for Becky’s schooling, which comes with the dorm room we’ve seen her living in. Rent and utility bills don’t exist for her right now, she presumably eats at the cafeteria like everyone else (and likely gets occasional free/discounted pizza from work), and she doesn’t own a vehicle. All I could see her needing to spend money on right now is basic toiletries and whatever personal food she wants beyond what’s offered by the school. $89.99 for some Joycons is probably okay.

The x’s denote how many times its been distilled. It was a way to keep track of alcohol strength when moonshining. XXX is the maximum as close to pure alcohol as possible. XX is still fairly strong as it is.

I do think this strip was great. But from a more pragmatic sense, I do think there is a difference between sneaking into a store alone to obtain booze and going into a bar with friends and hanging out with them.

After all, Duna is not literally invisible. She goes unnoticed partly because she acts alone and is unassuming. Put her with a group of people and they will check her like they checked the others.

Particularly when Dina is a standout in said group for whatever reason.

Joyce should have just been honest and said ‘it was to help Dorothy and you only make things worse for Dorothy, so of course I didn’t invite you’. She’d actually be in less trouble now, because only Becky would be angry with her.

The girls gonna go blind from that much moonshine oml.

Also, I mentioned it above but just adding on because I asked my husband about it, irl Dina would be caught for this like… within three days lol. My husband had to review every camera and angle of the building to try and find the alcohol thief at his place. He had to zoom in and figure out if anybody had a bag or a jacket to hide it. Big pain.

Also, I did not realize that Village Pantry was a convenience store and I thought for second Dina robbed a food bank and was so concerned.

There is a difference in going into bars with you and your underage freinds and posting it on instagram, (DON’T POST YOUR CRIMES ON SOCIAL MEDIA!)and boosting liquor, but really that’s not the point at all Joyce isn’t being to honest with Becky and Becky is overreacting and doesn’t understand the context and now Dina may have committed a crime. Although Dina could bring it back in the same manner, if her hypothesis has merit.

Always post your crimes on social media, what the hell do you even mean by “don’t”? Spoiled white boys do it all the time and nobody ever notices until they’ve shot up their school because the girl they didn’t have the guts to ask out might have told them “no”.

Honestly that one always baffled me and makes me want to side with conspiracy theorists. You’ve got a guy making clear threats on social media and cops don’t do anything about it? There are more than a billion posts a day to Facebook alone. How would the cops become aware of one thread of maybe a dozen?

Sometimes people do report such stuff. But what do the relevant laws allow as a response? (I honestly don’t know the details, but I suspect the answer is “nothing effective.” It’s very tricky to work out appropriate responses to crimes that have not yet been committed, and might never be.) It doesn’t help that the existing structure of public safety services is focused on force and containment, and has no good facilities for heading off trouble.

To me it’s not baffling, just sad and wasteful and angry-making.

Yeah they need to set something up that would allow the authorities to do something. Maybe send the kid doing the threatening for psychological evaluation or something? Because whenever this kind of stuff happens the media almost always report that “authorities were aware of the person/the threats.”. It just comes off as them not doing anything to stop it before it happened.

What none of you seem to be considering is that this jug originally belonged to one of the employees, and they brought it in for the employee party that’s going down later tonight.

As a personal anecdote that makes this canon, when I was working at a Sonic Drive-In, one of our crew leads started talking about how his uncle(?) just made this great batch of bespoke moonshine and was selling it for like $20 a jar, and if we were interested he’d have had the guy come up after close to sell it to us.

    It’s not real moonshine.
Moonshine proper is specifically illegally produced.
As in ‘by the shine of the moon.’

You can buy stuff called moonshine in stores, but it’s legally produced on legal equipment.

Additionally– illegal distillation is not unsafe.
The ‘you’ll go blind’ thing actually comes from liquor adulterated with methanol, cleaning products, etc. because it was produced by criminals during Prohibition who just wanted to max out volume.

And Becky just makes it worse by obsessing over Joyce. Dina is probably painfully aware of the fact that if Joyce offered a lesbian relationship, Becky would jump into her arms without a though about Dina.

Also, keep this in mind, Joyce is doubling and tripling down on this being Dina’s fault when she never thought of Becky or Dina at all. This is a lie to cover her ass and it’s so much worse than just coming clean.

You know, I feel like “Be Gay and Do Crimes” had more of a rebellious flair when being gay was itself something really socially subversive. Nowadays, gayness strikes me as something really ordinary for normal, boring people who brush their teeth and jointly file their taxes on time.

If anything, now the phrase seems more like a way to gay-ify anarchism, to make it more banal.

I don’t think I’m explaining very well. You don’t have to do crimes because you’re gay where you’re in danger. You should do crimes while gay where it’s safe so that the people who have to live their lives in secret can see they’re not alone and the people in power can see we don’t accept their repression. To show as long as the world treats us as a criminal element, its laws are not to be respected just by the merit of being laws. To be a bother to people who’d rather forget about Iran and Russia.

So we should… steal from some shopkeep in Indiana to show Putin and the Ayatollah a thing or two?

Idunno, I think we’re getting away from my original point, being openly gay is obviously subversive on a whole different order of magnitude in places where it actually is a crime, I was more remarking from my own American perspective. When I was younger I distinctly remember gayness as something a lot more socially fringe, and it was legit rebellious to even be out of the closet. There was a certain aesthetic romance and dramatic tension to that. So “Be Gay, Do Crimes” had a different energy.

It’s not like there’s no shootings over there, or trigger happy cops the laws brush under the rug, innit?

Cops in my particular country are awful and have maimed people but at least they aren’t at “killing in cold blood” level.

I get it I worded it poorly. My point from the start was that if you are gay and you are in a country where it’s outlawed you Really shouldn’t attract attention to yourself. Yeah US cops can be awful but they don’t boot in the door of gay people for being gay and brutalize them for that. In other parts of the world They Do.

Ok so – not everyone is cut out for this, so I won’t go “YOU GOTTA”… But if you have the disposition, well, this is what Pride actually started as. Or, to follow the example you’re using, like the women in Iran taking off their veils.

You start a movement even if the personal cost is high if you can, and go down with some fash blood under your nails if you must. Make the world look! So in the future, those who can’t fight can be safe to Actually Live. Change doesn’t come otherwise, I’m afraid. And if you fail… At least you did all you could with dignity, y know? And the faith someone else will pick up the mantle one day. I’ll understand if others disagree here, even though these are views I’m old enough to know I won’t give up, and wish more people held: All in all, I’m an optimist, not by nature but by choice :33

In Russia they can’t even really protest and if people so much twitch while being brutalized by the cops it’s 5-10 years in a Penal Colony. In Iran they would hang people as a warning to others during protests and people were murdered on mass. What happens once in a while in US happens on the Regular over there. I’m not saying that American cops aren’t bad. I’m saying that you don’t know what Truly oppressive police is like.

That terrorist attack in Russia from a while back? They caught some guys who they Thought were culprits. They cut off the ear off of one and stuffed it into his face. They attached a car battery to another’s testicles and a third was so badly brutalized that he wasn’t even conscious when they wheeled him into the court. There are recordings of those things happening.

Thinking that police fuck ups are the same as Systemic and Govoernment approved abuse of the general population to keep them scared and obedient. You can go to streets and talk shit about your government all your want. Yeah they might send riot cops after you or start some shit. But they won’t be putting you in jail or hanging from a lamp post for years because you DARED to disobey the government.

We lived through a fascist dictatorship here and contrary to what propaganda would want people to believe, the plebiscite that ousted the dictator who made mass-murder, dissapearances, and torture a thing, was only the culmination of years of very, VERY risky effort – a lot of it violent, and all of it legally a crime with no chance of an actual trial. I mean all these idealistic things I’ve said higher in the thread.

The objective of Be Gay Do Crime in y’all’s case would be to prevent things from getting THAT bad. And if people are uncomfortable with shoplifting, what would they think/do about “bigger” things? That said, it’s an excellent punchline here for what will be the start of some excellent shenanigans so, since this has gotten RL!Grim – Rule of Funny reigns over the rest.

So much is deemed a crime when it shouldn’t, it’s our duty as human beings to dismantle systems of oppression. Even more if we’re a part of a marginalized community.

Which is a crime. So splitting hairs about the shoplifting (in a chain store, to boot), is silly, when the saying is still very relevant as a whole.

It's #webcomicday? We have a special day??? Well, my name is Pat McHoarney and I draw 69 Mouse-Ear Blvd, a multigenerational story about women who all have sexy legs and probably other features. There was a grandmother, but she wasn't hot and so she died off-panel.

This @bransonreese.bsky.social four panel is never completely out of my head.
Four panel comic by Brandon Reese titled Animal Crackers. In each panel Groucho Marx is speaking.

1 - One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas
2 - How I worked up the courage to kill a living thing I'll never know.
3 - (silent)
4 - They mourn their dead, as we do.
