JoycexDorothy bait was funny for like 12 years, now I just see Dorothy gleefully obfuscating consent and the comic not calling her out on it once.

you’re not wrong. timescale kind of screws up how long it should take people to notice and say something. Need Jennifer to show up and have enough time not dealing with her own drama, to fix/break this.

Many close friendships reach a point where asking for forgiveness rather than permission really is the more practical thing. Not everyone wants that, and that’s okay, but speaking for myself it’s pretty great.

She’s possibly my least favorite artist ever musically. I can’t believe she’s still around and Katy Perry has faded into the 10’s. If there’s some celeb gossip related reason for this, I wouldn’t know it because I don’t follow celebrities.

I knew people who met and worked alongside Taylor Swift. She apparently treats people as badly as her music treats my ears.

Shake it off. There’s a Disney Princess fanmade version (and a kids one) on YouTube that my girls both loved when they were around 2-5-ish.

Katy Perry’s Roar was also in the “kids music video rotation” but the middle one has now discovered Sing and Sing 2, and introduced our youngest to those (which include CGI pigs dancing to Shake it Off), so those ones (plus “Time to be Awesome” from the MLP movie, and some other upbeat, empowering ones from the movie Ballerina are more likely to play…

Should also locate the Katy Perry video with the little girl beating up a whole room full of karate jerks and reintroduce it to them…

Taylor’s got a lot of detractors, and with good reason, but honestly? She writes her stuff and Katy doesn’t, and that is a contributing factor to how she enjoys much more credibility with a lot of music fans, though Katy did herself no favors with some really bad career choices at times.

taylor’s dad is richer and her music is more bland and therefore has a wider potential audience (supermarket customers)

i have never liked either singer but at least the world doesn’t try to trick me into hearing katy perry songs 80 times a day and no one yells at me or acts oppressed if i say i don’t like her ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

That’s like the exact OPPOSITE of what I’ve heard about TS and the people around her. I honestly wouldn’t believe any rumors, good or bad about Taylor Swift or any celebrity that enjoys her insane level of fame. There’s financial motivation for or against her and a cult like passion with both. I would say as a jaded adult that individuals that enjoy her incredible level of privilege and wealth likely don’t do enough considering the major gaps in quality of life and income in our society.

I appreciate that she writes her own songs; that is like, the only way I can have even a passing interest in that kind of music, otherwise it’s like, no, I’m not gonna listen to what your corporate committee thought might work. I mean I’m not gonna listen anyway, but I can at least respect that she’s an actual songwriter, which isn’t nothing for those kind of people. But yeah, like, bland as hell in terms of those same actual songs.

I mean I wouldn’t call myself a fan but her music does, mostly manage to keep up with the times? Not all for the better, the whole reputation era felt dated the second it came out, there’s the cringe NiceGirl song that was sooo 2000s, and I’m sure she’d like to forget she ever made “you’re so gay”. But Katy Perry is strictly a 2000s and 2010s artist. That was her era, the sexy, male gazey campiness with mindless but fun pop. Like her woman’s world MV would’ve done fine like 10, 15 years ago. But it’s just dated and she can’t keep up.

Unless you like literally don’t go out you probably *have* heard a Taylor Swift song and probably didn’t realize it. Over the past decade or so, her music has become sort of the default to the point where you’re likely to hear her on various retail playlists, etc.

Not entirely sure why Taylor Swift lyrics would need to be taught.
I say that as someone who’s actually a big fan of Taylor Swift. I just don’t get what Dorothy was going to offer.

Also, it’s interesting that Joyce and Joe are going to read through the lyrics while they listen. That’s something I’d do, but I’ve learned most people often aren’t that concerned with lyrics.

I guess. In my experience, that happens more when people are already into the song and know it decently, and also more likely with high energy songs, which this is not, but if that’s what’s happening here, sure.

To sit down in a nice snuggly corner, and for her and Joyce to put their faces really close to each other, and sing a (probably?) love song together while being intimately close and inebriated.

Really? I’ve often found the exact opposite. Usually from people who are aghast that I don’t know or care what the lyrics are to even my favorite songs, or when I mention I wish there were more purely instrumental pieces in my preferred genre.

People are complex, but I think there are three general tendencies and lots of people lean mostly on one. Some people come for the words; some for the music; and some wanna dance and come for the beat and the tempo.

Me, I want a song to be a story set in emotional context, so I care about the words and the music. If the beat is intrusive, it’s probably a story I won’t care for.

That. YT has done a lot that has helped make more people more aware of how US copyright works, but it’s also done a lot that obfuscates how it works because their site rules are more limiting in order to protect their platform.

In the current case, it’d be impossible to argue any substantive effect on the market for Tailor Swift’s song and the nature of the work would probably be a wash with the difference between presentation. Where purpose comes in, I’m uncertain how meaningful it would be since the use is more about the song’s place in pop culture and the characters’ interactions with that part of pop culture than it is about the song itself. With regards to amount and substantiality Willis has kept the lyrical excerpts to a part of two verses and part of the chorus, just enough to suggest the song without fully expressing the most important heart of the work. Yep, that was a paragraph of fair use analysis from someone totally unqualified to engage in such ;D

While you’re not per se wrong, Lars wasn’t actually the problem. He was just the mask that the actual problem, mainstream music production and publishing companies in the US, used to shield themselves from the inevitable public blowback when the Napster, Limewire, Kazaa, and eventually BitTorrent lawsuits started destroying lives. He even had some valid points at the time.
That being said, letting himself be used as a corporate stooge was when he earned being called a sellout (and not just of “every seat every night”).

I know two Taylor Swift songs. Love story and The Man. I genuinely find The Man to be funny.

I like shipping Joyce and Dorothy even though there’s plausible deniability that they actually have romantic interest in each other, but I think their obvious jealousy when they each have the romantic attention of a man is some of the biggest evidence in favor of it. Neither of them display anything near this level of jealousy for their other friends notably Becky when she hangs with Dina more than them. I know Dorothy is nowhere near as close to Becky, but Joyce has also shown very little in the way of jealousy like she did when Dorothy was first dating Walky. Dorothy was never jealous of Danny either for that matter, but they might not actually be that close anymore if they ever were. Seeing Dorothy now reciprocate that toward Joe at least earns a cheeky The Rock eyebrow raise from me.

I’m not sure how deniable Dorothy’s interest in Joyce is, after how she reacted to Jennifer taking Joyce to the clinic, Taco Bell lunch, exercise room third wheelin, the dream (and implied breaking into Joyce’s room to watch her sleep), and the time Dorothy talked Joyce into masturbating with her and expected to be able to watch Joyce cum.

If, how much, in what ways, and for how long, Joyce has been romantically interested in Dorothy is more ambiguous. But I think Dorothy has missed her chance, if she ever had one.

Which is why Dorothy’s going to be dating Mindy sooner or later, she’ll be her replacement Joyce.

I don’t know the lyrics. On account of I’m an almost forty year old dude.

Who was never even interested in music in high school.

And who technically never spent a dime on music before.

And who spends literally no time paying attention to modern celebrities, pop icons, or other famous people.

And whose music, when I listen to it, is made up 100% of neat songs from soundtracks of movies, games, and shows.

… you know, maybe this is more of a ndiv thing than an “I’m an old millennial” thing.

I wonder if Amber knows the lyrics. Or could even recognize it as a Taylor Swift song. I mean, I’m sure that Dina doesn’t, but Amber? Maybe, maybe not.

Panel 1, music in the background: “Well I’m rather upper class, high society”
    Joyce: I– I don’t know this song.
    Dorothy: AC/DC, Joyce
Joyce: I wasn’t allowed to listen to secular music.
