Body swapping is a forever trope. It’s timeless like kids suddenly becoming adults, the one episode where grandma visits just to die, or any movie about a seemingly average man that’s actually a secret badass.
Since the last time Sarah looked this happy, it was from balance in the Force. So do we think the balance this time is coming from her own suffering, or from Jennifer’s?
Because I love inserting things like this: something close to an ACTUAL ‘kanji’ for Inverse Mood Method would be: 『感情状態の反転法』(read: kanjou joutai no hanten-hou, meaning “Emotional State Reversal Technique”)
We don’t get to see Jennifer and Sal bouncing off each other like this very often. I like it.
As for the brainworms thing, I am currently running through DoA characters in my head to determine which one would be most likely to eat a roadkilled bear. Right now I’m thinking Toedad.
I would put money on Malaya being the most likely to eat road kill. I do not think she is very smart and she could probably be convinced to do anything if she thought it would get under Sal’s skin somehow.
Freaky Friday is one of those story premises that will never age, so much so that I have to wonder if there are lost ancient plays or legends about switching bodies and having to learn lessons about empathy.
For the specific parent/child version, I think that’s roughly when people started caring what kids thought about things. Before then, kids don’t need to understand how tough being an adult is, they just need to do what they’re told. And adults certainly don’t need to understand how tough being a kid is.
The thing is I can’t really find earlier examples of a body swap in general.
I think impersonation might have filled the same dramatic role in earlier works, but the idea of two people swapping bodies seems to be a modern invention.
phew, there’s apparently a Buddhist legend that involves body swapping. A Pandita who transfers his mind to a dead elephant, to move it out of a village’s fresh water supply. While he’s doing that, someone else mistakes his unoccupied (and much younger) body for a corpse, and transfers their mind to the Pandita’s body. Then he comes back and has to put his mind in the other guy’s body.
Dampa Sangye is the name of one of the guys or the other, depending on the version of the legend.
My theory is she’s trying to be more like Lucy in a last ditch effort here. But it could totally be Jennifer’s suffering canceling things out cosmically.
There is always a chance Sarah has grown as a character. Maybe she just realized that being so guarded and misanthropic is what blew her chance with Jacob so she’s chosen to take the L with him and move on as a brighter person for the next guy. Hopefully someone even taller and with a better haircut.
To be fair, I don’t know if it’s not working for him or if, well, Willis’s art style just… doesn’t work for it. Because seriously, he looks like he’s got his previous buzzcut style, but someone slapped an omelet on his head. I think it has more to do with the conversation with his brother? I forget the exact details but wasn’t it something like “You need to stop worrying about my approval.” or some such.
I think it’s just a popular black mail hairstyle. It’s been credited to Michal B Jordan’s look in the first Black Panther movie for breaking into the mainstream. Short, side swept dreads, sometimes dyed. It was actually a talking point amongst the black community this year for being overused in media, which it is.
I feel like it’s maybe that, or maybe her having that moment at the party where she realized she’d almost jeopardized her scholarship to try to get with Jacob, and decided she needed to put some distance there.
Hairstyle aside, even with character growth and new realizations, it’s very rare that people can completely shift their personalities overnight. That takes work and time.
She’d already been trying to open up to Jacob, with mixed success at best. If she’s trying to be less guarded and misanthropic here, it’s a mask. She’s just faking it, at least for now.

Sal and Jennifer’s Statler and Waldorf act is pretty fun. Sal’s funner when she’s bouncing off of someone and not just being a smug prick on her lonesome.

I mean Jacob’s kindness was one of the (many) things that attracted Sarah to him. I going off of panel 2, I really do feel like she was hoping he would be patient enough to wait for Sarah to work through her issues. It could be she holds no one at fault but she’s taken a soberingly happy outlook that she doesn’t need to worry about romance anymore because she’ll never be good enough for anyone so why worry. Her scholarship will be secure and she doesn’t have to worry about ever putting herself out there even by a toe again.
Kinda dismal but I can see Sarah’s misery being so deep she flipped a switch in her brain.
lol, not that you can’t work through it with a romantic relationship, but feels like sarah needs like 2-3 more good healthy genuine relationships that aren’t with joyce before moving on to attempting to date someone (tho she’s young and a teenager so she’ll probably go by instinct/impulse as opposed to doing that lol)

Honestly, my theory is that Sarah is realizing she’s asexual, but still very much into fantasizing about this. She doesn’t actually want to personally do Jacob, but the idea that someone she doesn’t totally despise gets to do him? Good enough!
I think that as well, not least because they’ve had that exact conversation with each other quite sometime ago.
Sarah’s stated position has been that she doesn’t want to be his girlfriend, she wants to use his body a few times and then move on. Over time, that got muddled up with ‘get him away from Raidah’, plus Joyce’s insistence on romantically shipping Jacob+Sarah, plus the fact that Sarah genuinely likes Jacob as a friend shape – it looked like romantic interest even to Sarah.
I think it’s possible that she expected seeing him with Lucy to hurt, and then it didn’t, and she’s reveling a bit.
Of course it’s also possible that ‘being vulnerable and open didn’t work’ and she’s doubling down out of spite instead of giving up and going back to her Feral Cat social style.
See, I don’t think that’s true at all, despite Sarah saying much of it. If it was just sexual, she would have moved on long ago. She’s scared of opening up enough for romance, but that doesn’t mean she’s not actually interested.
Though the scholarship risk there seems more theoretical than real. The chances of any real university consequences from a small mild drinking party seem pretty negligible.
Man, I am NOT looking forward to the Sarah complete & utter breakdown/rage that’s going to happen from this.
I can just feel all the snarky comments she’s going to make the moment Walky & Dorothy are there.
Does no one else have such extreme anxiety around an uncertain potential romance that being rejected is a genuine relief just because you finally know what’s happening? Because it may not be all sunshine and roses but if I were in Sarah’s shoes, “sorry I don’t like you that way and I’m unavailable now” would be infinitely preferable to him refusing to give a straight answer.

Not that I sit around thinking up ways for Walky to be put through the wringer, what if he’s personally walking Dorothy to all her classes, to make sure she’s going, and she has a class with Lyle whom they run into while they’re kissing or something. Okay so she’s clearly blindingly hurt and outraged, and if we get a normal storyline it’ll end with her admitting it’s because she’s mad at herself for being like this and putting herself in a situation where she was outflanked by someone like Lucy.
Or, moonshot here — her first attempts at a relationship that we’ve seen gets us a peek into why she’s so withdrawn, even before Dana. Possibly a boyfriend when she was a teenager or something.

At this point, Jacob has, whatever his passing interactions with Joyce and Sarah, only chosen to date… Raidha and Lucy. Both of whom… cause disquiet when they are in page. While the mechanisms and motives involved vary the end point is the same – interactions with either seem to end poorly for others, and neither will ever believe themselves to blame.
Jacob’s instincts for relationship partners are bad enough that I really do hope he decides to pick the sock.
Honestly lets see where this is going, I could absolutely see having a total attempt at honestly turning a new leaf after fumbling a dude who looks like Jacob.

After some careful analysis I’ve decided to turn against Jacob. I did ship him and Sarah and I still think they would be nice together, but I’m now with the crowd saying they aren’t compatible. Nothing to do with their personalities, I just think Jacob was playing games with Sarah and she deserves better than him. In hindsight he kind of fed her a lot of nice sentiments without really giving her back the answer she deserved.
Theory: Sarah’s happy because her view that shit is awful for her and will remain so was confirmed. It’s less that she’s good with what happened than her world view has been validated

Freaky Friday is one of those story premises that will never age, so much so that I have to wonder if there are lost ancient plays or legends about switching bodies and having to learn lessons about empathy.
Wikipedia lists the earliest examples as having been late 1800s, which I do find surprisingly recent as an origination point.
For the specific parent/child version, I think that’s roughly when people started caring what kids thought about things. Before then, kids don’t need to understand how tough being an adult is, they just need to do what they’re told. And adults certainly don’t need to understand how tough being a kid is.
The thing is I can’t really find earlier examples of a body swap in general.
I think impersonation might have filled the same dramatic role in earlier works, but the idea of two people swapping bodies seems to be a modern invention.

phew, there’s apparently a Buddhist legend that involves body swapping. A Pandita who transfers his mind to a dead elephant, to move it out of a village’s fresh water supply. There is always a chance Sarah has grown as a character. Maybe she just realized that being so guarded and misanthropic is what blew her chance with Jacob so she’s chosen to take the L with him and move on as a brighter person for the next guy. I think it’s just a popular black mail hairstyle. It’s been credited to Michal B Jordan’s look in the first Black Panther movie for breaking into the mainstream. Short, side swept dreads, sometimes dyed. It was actually a talking point amongst the black community this year for being overused in media, which it is.

Hairstyle aside, even with character growth and new realizations, it’s very rare that people can completely shift their personalities overnight. That takes work and time.
She’d already been trying to open up to Jacob, with mixed success at best. If she’s trying to be less guarded and misanthropic here, it’s a mask. She’s just faking it, at least for now.
What we’ve seen isn’t a shift in personalities, it’s a shift in mood. It’s probably going to fade, but that doesn’t mean it’s fake.

I mean Jacob’s kindness was one of the (many) things that attracted Sarah to him. I going off of panel 2, I really do feel like she was hoping he would be patient enough to wait for Sarah to work through her issues. It could be she holds no one at fault but she’s taken a soberingly happy outlook that she doesn’t need to worry about romance anymore because she’ll never be good enough for anyone so why worry. Her scholarship will be secure and she doesn’t have to worry about ever putting herself out there even by a toe again.
Kinda dismal but I can see Sarah’s misery being so deep she flipped a switch in her brain.

I think the opposite, that her feelings are mostly sexual and she knows Jacob wants something very different.

Sarah’s stated position has been that she doesn’t want to be his girlfriend, she wants to use his body a few times and then move on. Over time, that got muddled up with ‘get him away from Raidah’, plus Joyce’s insistence on romantically shipping Jacob+Sarah, plus the fact that Sarah genuinely likes Jacob as a friend shape – it looked like romantic interest even to Sarah.
I think it’s possible that she expected seeing him with Lucy to hurt, and then it didn’t, and she’s reveling a bit.
Of course it’s also possible that ‘being vulnerable and open didn’t work’ and she’s doubling down out of spite instead of giving up and going back to her Feral Cat social style.
See, I don’t think that’s true at all, despite Sarah saying much of it. If it was just sexual, she would have moved on long ago. She’s scared of opening up enough for romance, but that doesn’t mean she’s not actually interested.
Yeah, putting your scholarship at risk just to talk to a guy seems like an odd move if Sarah wasn’t in to him for more than a physical relationship.
Though the scholarship risk there seems more theoretical than real. The chances of any real university consequences from a small mild drinking party seem pretty negligible.

At this point, Jacob has, whatever his passing interactions with Joyce and Sarah, only chosen to date… Raidha and Lucy. Both of whom… cause disquiet when they are in page. While the mechanisms and motives involved vary the end point is the same – interactions with either seem to end poorly for others, and neither will ever believe themselves to blame.
Jacob’s instincts for relationship partners are bad enough that I really do hope he decides to pick the sock.

After some careful analysis I’ve decided to turn against Jacob. I did ship him and Sarah and I still think they would be nice together, but I’m now with the crowd saying they aren’t compatible. Nothing to do with their personalities, I just think Jacob was playing games with Sarah and she deserves better than him. In hindsight he kind of fed her a lot of nice sentiments without really giving her back the answer she deserved.
I think Jacob’s more oblivious and less in control than he portrays. His intentions might have been good, but he’s easily swayed.
