What in the Frank Herberty hell? You not only got the first comment on this strip, but used it to point out how you already got on today’s strip a week ago on a previous strip?
As for Amber, Amber is so so so down with garbage fires she even was the one taking Dorothy’s pics on the first place so, she’s kind of the first woman she flashed.
Dina wanted to get an internship at Jurassic Park, but there’s a waiting list so the Department of 90s Sci-Fi movies put her in the Men in Black until a slot becomes available.
Amber isn’t openly dressing as Amazi-Girl, she just got placed in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
She seems to quote it quite frequently for something she hates. She probably loves it (at least deep down), but feels compelled to point out all of its many inaccuracies. After all, the film was made with love as a monument to her passion, but nothing says love like gushing about the inaccuracies to those you love. After all when it comes to something you care about, the truth is always more exciting than fiction (even when it turns your twelve-foot killer lizards into sharp toes turkeys).
She shouldn’t hate the original one, because it did a lot to help scientists understand how dinosaurs actually moved, and helped put us on the right track to learn even more later down the line. its dated, but it did the best it could with what we had at the time.
The sequels, made after we learned more about them, and they still clung to outdated ideas? those she’d despise.
Eh, Jurassic world solved that with the quote
“Nothing in Jurassic World is natural, we have always filled gaps in the genome with the DNA of other animals. And if the genetic code was pure, many of them would look quite different. But you didn’t ask for reality, you asked for more teeth.”
At the time the first movie was made, we did not know birds are avian dinosaurs. Dinosaur knowledge has advanced aggressively since that movie, in part because of the movie. What bothered me so much at the time was calling Deinonychus “Velociraptor” and creating legions of confidently incorrect casual dinosaur fans. Velociraptors were awesome vicious murder turkeys, dang it.
Actually, frogs, at the time the movie was made, were some of the easiest animals to genetically engineer. So it wasn’t about accuracy of genome, it was about ease of access. Speaking as someone who has actually worked in bio-research, it honestly made perfect since at that point (just, you know, not a lot of other points.)
Funny thing, the original novel had a similar line–there’s a point where one of hte scientists reflects on how they tinkered with the DNA (behind the rich dude’s back, even) in order for them to be more marketable, rather than realistic. Specifically, he notes that they’ve been made more active and aggressive, because megafauna just lazing around all day isn’t going to get much repeat business.
Sorry to correct you, but the lines in the original Jurassic Park novel are the opposite. Dr. Wu suggests to Hammond that they could slow the dinosaurs down, he’s worried that people aren’t used to seeing animals that big move that fast, that people might think they look like sped up film. He suggests making more docile dinosaurs that are easier to handle, and fit in more with what the average person expects.
Wow, that is a good catch. How did you remember you people keep remembering this dozen year old strips? I never thought my memory was a problem, but now I am starting to worry.
I don’t know about why Thag Simmons remembered that comic, but, I read Willis comics before going to sleep and upon waking up (which is, incidentally, a great way to memorize things), I have always hyperfocused on reading, and DoA often hits my strongest interests (comics, art, religions, psychology, neurodivergence).
I have an actively terrible memory for everything else, which I’ve been to doctors about, so, a strong memory isn’t always correlated with encyclopedic knowledge of DoA.

It’s memory of the collective, so the odds are that one person will remember, even if each individual has a low probabillity of doing so.
Also, I haven’t been reading this comic for a dozen years, and instead did an archive trawl, which has surprisingly good retention rates (maybe something to do with hyperfocus) (at least to remember old comics, which I have not yet demonstrated in the comments, but find that I am able to do so in other contexts.)
Actually, this comic is rather interesting. My wife is physically fairly similar to Amber (curvy but muscular). Meanwhile, my wife enjoys when I wear suits or other masculine-looking clothes. So I feel like this particular comic speaks to both of our interests.
Oh, this is how Amber gets wrapped into Dorothy/Walky, isn’t it? Maybe a Superman/Clark Kent situation where Walky wants Amber but Dorothy wants Amazi-Girl.

Poor Dorothy. Sometimes, something just clicks in your brain and suddenly even if you never consciously felt a thing before… it’s just THERE and undeniable now. And only retrospectively can you see all the obvious clues pointing toward it.
I hope that suit can withstand Becky; it looks like a good outfit, but if it is slightly damaged in the name of sexy times then that is understandable.
You know, thinking about it, Amazi-Girl WOULD be the second girl she’d be gay about in the cast, wouldn’t she.
Also curious, since I do not really recall Amber or Amazi-Girl expressing sexual interest in women, if Amazi-Girl would be more likely to be into Dorothy than Amber is. Amber was into Walky, but Amazi-Girl seems to have been rather apathetic about him, versus Danny whom both were into.
As for Amber and Amazi-girl, it’s actually interesting to consider. I do think Amazi-girl would be more likely to be into women then Amber, Amber seems very securely into men.

… i mean willis has said before that character’s sexualities are universal and retroactively canon to all comic continuities, right? in shortpacked there was an arc where that rule was relevant to the storyline and featured an alternate universe amber that was attracted to rachel. so if that amber can be attracted to women, then it suggests that it’s likely this amber could also be attracted to women but has yet to be in circumstances where it’d occur to her. maybe if she saw rachel doing gymnastics or something.
You know, the whole Sith Code, Sith dress style, Sith love of remarkably breakable world-shattering giant balls, habit of chocking subordinates, and unique interest in using the force to make sustained electric discharges? It all starts to make a lot more sense if the Sith didn’t start off as fascist space wizards but as a secret jedi BDSM club that just got really out of hand over the millennia.

Yep. There’s probably a lot of reasons. Some of the ones I’ve heard or personally experienced:
1. Misogyny + internalized homophobia + whatever you call the toxic cocktail of societal conditioning that so often makes sapphic people feel guilty to the point of nauseous over being attracted to women. You feel like you’re objectifying other women. Taking women entirely out of the smut equation helps.
2. Gender identity stuff. A lot of sapphic people run the gamut from gender-nonconforming to transmasc. Butch is a gender identity for a LOT of people. These folks identify more with m/m characters.
3. F/F content is still primarily created by and for straight men, and that can make it very alienating for sapphic people. (This is not a criticism of straight men for making porn they like, I don’t care about that, it’s not a real problem.)
Meanwhile, M/M content is primarily made by and for queer people. The gay porn industry is by and for gay men, m/m erotica is by a broader range of people (plenty of whom are transmasc, for the record).
Queer content that comes from someone like you is a lot more relatable, whoever “you” might be, so folks tend to seek it out.
Even if we assumed Amber was queer because she had queer friends, which I personally wouldn’t do, I’d probably assume gender related stuff before sexuality related stuff

Both are Caucasian. Both wear glasses (at least at this point). And while amber is a little thicker than Joyce, both of them are similarly proportioned (I e. Neither is particularly tall or slim,)
Panel 4 suggests it’s just the carpet. Although it appears Dorothy is experiencing a 4Fs hormonal flood, I don’t think it’s ‘fight’ hormones at this time. But it definitely is in the 4Fs category.
Do it, Dorothy. Date Danny’s ex. As a side effect, you might cause the GarbageSkow to re-launch. Amazi-Girl+Dorothy+Walky+Amber, why not. The drama would be intense.

This makes the whole having sex with Walky after chasing Amazi-girl and initially getting the smile of respect before being flipped the bird into more perspective.
I had a dream not too long ago where Dorothy developed feelings for Jocelyne and it led into an arc about Dorothy having a bi awakening. Does it count as prophecy if my subconscious got the wrong Brown?
The last 15 years of obsessing over Amazi-Girl — tracking her down, interviewing her, admiring her, encouraging her, defending and covering for her — suddenly gains very different context for Dorothy.
See, for me that’s kinda boring. Another character discovers she’s gay/bi. Ho hum. I would have found it more interesting to explore another sort of attraction. But it’s not my story.
I mean, we have a coming out of a lesbian and a bi dude, we have Ethan for the closeted and then uncloseted gay dude experience. We have Billie and ruth for the messy bisexuality for girls….

It’s amazing how much you start to notice after you realize something you weren’t previously aware of. This applies to bi awakening, but also to lots of other things as well.
Ngl, I never considered Dorothy/Amazi-girl, but I’m way more down with that than Dorothy/Joyce. Plus I think a Dorothy/Amazigirl/Amber/Walky polycule would work WAY better than any trying to include Dorothy and Joe around the same love interest (I do not see her actively trying to sabotage Amber). Especially because Amber, despite kind of being terrible at communication, weirdly buffs the communication stats of the people around her like a passive effect.

That’s not how I read the posts they’ve made with unused comics at all.
They did use the phrase “murdered in its crib” about Joe/Joyce, but that version of events has Joe explicitly offer to step aside for Dorothy and Dorothy turn him down. It’s a version of events where Willis wanted to keep the status quo, which was teasing Dorothy/Joyce but keeping it ambiguous.
I don’t think “murdered” or “blown up” (by a Dorothy drama bomb) necessarily meant the Joe/Joyce relationship ENDED, just irrevocably altered, before they’d even had a nice dinner together.
It’s still possible that we’ll get something someday where Joe is actually worried about corrupting Joyce, because Joyce has changed a lot since they started dating (mostly in superficial ways or in ways that were a long time coming, like saying “fuck”), but idk, it’s not the trajectory I’m currently seeing.
Anything over 50 pounds for hand weights _that_ size probably is radioactive. A pure lead weight that size might be 30-40 pounds maybe. A stable isotope of iridium might be 80 pounds. But horribly expensive. Nothing over 100 pounds would be safe.
I’m curious if Amazi-Girl and Amber share sexualities. Amber has expressed a preference for men even when propositioned to observe Becky and Dina. AG did date Danny, but their personalities have diverged much more since then. It would be interesting to get an update on where she stands. Amazi-Girl is so stoic and vigilant of herself and others that even an argument for ace would be believable to me.
I always viewed amber as ‘probably queer’ because I’ve never met a ‘token straight’ friend with a bunch of queer friends who was actually straight. Birds of a feather, to an extent.
But also, she’s on a roller derby team and those are notorious for being extremely gay.
I’m currently imagining it as a tour like montage. Where Dorothy gets pushed from room to room and being a bisexual disaster with every woman she sees.
She should talk to Danny. He’s experienced this exact thing and considering he went to her to talk about it they might not be best buddies but they do have that level of trust.
I’d be completely ok with the entire rest of this arc of the comic being Dorothy running away from hot women only to stumble and crash into increasingly hotter women.

She seems to quote it quite frequently for something she hates. She probably loves it (at least deep down), but feels compelled to point out all of its many inaccuracies. After all, the film was made with love as a monument to her passion, but nothing says love like gushing about the inaccuracies to those you love. After all when it comes to something you care about, the truth is always more exciting than fiction (even when it turns your twelve-foot killer lizards into sharp toes turkeys).
She shouldn’t hate the original one, because it did a lot to help scientists understand how dinosaurs actually moved, and helped put us on the right track to learn even more later down the line. its dated, but it did the best it could with what we had at the time.
The sequels, made after we learned more about them, and they still clung to outdated ideas? those she’d despise.
Also Jurassic Park is a masterpiece and the sequels aren’t*

Yeah. Using frog DNA instead of bird or at least crocodile is just inexcusable stupidity.
At the time the first movie was made, we did not know birds are avian dinosaurs. Dinosaur knowledge has advanced aggressively since that movie, in part because of the movie. What bothered me so much at the time was calling Deinonychus “Velociraptor” and creating legions of confidently incorrect casual dinosaur fans. Velociraptors were awesome vicious murder turkeys, dang it.
Actually, frogs, at the time the movie was made, were some of the easiest animals to genetically engineer. So it wasn’t about accuracy of genome, it was about ease of access. Speaking as someone who has actually worked in bio-research, it honestly made perfect since at that point (just, you know, not a lot of other points.)
Funny thing, the original novel had a similar line–there’s a point where one of hte scientists reflects on how they tinkered with the DNA (behind the rich dude’s back, even) in order for them to be more marketable, rather than realistic. Specifically, he notes that they’ve been made more active and aggressive, because megafauna just lazing around all day isn’t going to get much repeat business.
Sorry to correct you, but the lines in the original Jurassic Park novel are the opposite. Dr. Wu suggests to Hammond that they could slow the dinosaurs down, he’s worried that people aren’t used to seeing animals that big move that fast, that people might think they look like sped up film. He suggests making more docile dinosaurs that are easier to handle, and fit in more with what the average person expects.

I don’t know about why Thag Simmons remembered that comic, but, I read Willis comics before going to sleep and upon waking up (which is, incidentally, a great way to memorize things), I have always hyperfocused on reading, and DoA often hits my strongest interests (comics, art, religions, psychology, neurodivergence).
I have an actively terrible memory for everything else, which I’ve been to doctors about, so, a strong memory isn’t always correlated with encyclopedic knowledge of DoA.

Yep. There’s probably a lot of reasons. Some of the ones I’ve heard or personally experienced:
1. Misogyny + internalized homophobia + whatever you call the toxic cocktail of societal conditioning that so often makes sapphic people feel guilty to the point of nauseous over being attracted to women. You feel like you’re objectifying other women. Taking women entirely out of the smut equation helps.
2. Gender identity stuff. A lot of sapphic people run the gamut from gender-nonconforming to transmasc. Butch is a gender identity for a LOT of people. These folks identify more with m/m characters.
3. F/F content is still primarily created by and for straight men, and that can make it very alienating for sapphic people. (This is not a criticism of straight men for making porn they like, I don’t care about that, it’s not a real problem.)
Meanwhile, M/M content is primarily made by and for queer people. The gay porn industry is by and for gay men, m/m erotica is by a broader range of people (plenty of whom are transmasc, for the record).
Queer content that comes from someone like you is a lot more relatable, whoever “you” might be, so folks tend to seek it out.
Even if we assumed Amber was queer because she had queer friends, which I personally wouldn’t do, I’d probably assume gender related stuff before sexuality related stuff

SAME. I love Joe/Joyce and having it just be in service to Dotty/Joyce would be extremely dissapointing.
I however have quietly been into Amazi/Dotty since the early chases between them because it gave me SERIOUS Supes/Lois vibes.
Seems like Willis kinda confirmed Dorothy/Joyce is going to happen and Joe/Joyce would’ve been over earlier if these comics had come out sooner.
That’s not how I read the posts they’ve made with unused comics at all.
They did use the phrase “murdered in its crib” about Joe/Joyce, but that version of events has Joe explicitly offer to step aside for Dorothy and Dorothy turn him down. It’s a version of events where Willis wanted to keep the status quo, which was teasing Dorothy/Joyce but keeping it ambiguous.
I don’t think “murdered” or “blown up” (by a Dorothy drama bomb) necessarily meant the Joe/Joyce relationship ENDED, just irrevocably altered, before they’d even had a nice dinner together.
It’s still possible that we’ll get something someday where Joe is actually worried about corrupting Joyce, because Joyce has changed a lot since they started dating (mostly in superficial ways or in ways that were a long time coming, like saying “fuck”), but idk, it’s not the trajectory I’m currently seeing.

Anything over 50 pounds for hand weights _that_ size probably is radioactive. A pure lead weight that size might be 30-40 pounds maybe. A stable isotope of iridium might be 80 pounds. But horribly expensive. Nothing over 100 pounds would be safe.

I’m curious if Amazi-Girl and Amber share sexualities. Amber has expressed a preference for men even when propositioned to observe Becky and Dina. AG did date Danny, but their personalities have diverged much more since then. It would be interesting to get an update on where she stands. Amazi-Girl is so stoic and vigilant of herself and others that even an argument for ace would be believable to me.
I always viewed amber as ‘probably queer’ because I’ve never met a ‘token straight’ friend with a bunch of queer friends who was actually straight. Birds of a feather, to an extent.
But also, she’s on a roller derby team and those are notorious for being extremely gay.
I’m currently imagining it as a tour like montage. Where Dorothy gets pushed from room to room and being a bisexual disaster with every woman she sees.
