She does, she really does – and she has the best friends because she has earned them – as has Becky for that matter.

Even Sarah sticks out her neck for Becky – Sarah who despises that compassionate side of herself and has only seen it backfire horribly before.

It’s awesome, it’s beautiful and it’s the reason Toedad will fail even more miserably in round two.

Yeah, but Plan B required Joe to take a vow of celibacy, Mike to volunteer at a soup kitchen, Dorothy to win the Republican nomination for president with Dina as her running mate, and Ruth to infiltrate Femur’s R Us without drawing attention.

…Come to think of it, Plan B was a little bit wacky. Maybe Robin shouldn’t be consulted for Plans anymore.

It might be interesting if we find out how this happen. Was this Joyce and Becky’s token High School Rebellion ™? Did they sneak off one Saturday afternoon to watch JP1-3 at the local Multiplex?

It might make for an interesting flashback scene, especially if they tried to dress ‘non-Christian’ for the event. Something tells me that Joyce and Becky’s pre-college idea of what looks ‘sexy and rebellious’ would have been… odd to observe.

Actually, I don’t think that last line was intentional on Joyce’s part. I, for, instance, didn’t get it immediately (but then, I only saw the movie through once) but still thought it a reasonable, and funny, line for Joyce to say, given the context.

But then at the Questioning meeting Walky told Joyce that Dorothy knew. But didn’t tell her when Dorothy figured it out. So Joyce thinks that she figured it out after the party, and is now afraid to talk to Dorothy.

I wonder if Ross is going to have a mental block about the possibility that Joyce could lie to him because he is too confident in her upbringing letting him dominate her. So, Joyce is a stammering mess who blurts out obvious and self-contradictory nonsense in a freaked-out squirrel-like tone of voice. Ross believes it is entirely true because he can’t imagine Joyce lying to him.

Yes, I’m saying that Dina may have uncovered his one serious weakness – his credulity when he thinks that he is in charge of a situation (which is almost always).

I really shouldn’t let “Becky should just do X posts!” get on my nerves, but honestly. If her problems were that easily solvable then that defeats a whole manner of points. Some problems in this comic can easily be solved by the characters clearly, and rationally communicating with each other. (Like Joyce’s current anxieties regarding Dorothy) but Becky’s homelessness is not one of them.

That’s possible, but if she thinks about it rationally:
        – She had attended Joyce’s party on Saturday night.
        – Dorothy found out about Ethan’s sexuality prior to the party
        – Joyce KNEW that Dorothy knew (she was told at the Sunday meeting)
So if Dorothy knew and still knew, then she can’t really be that upset.

Joyce was told that Dorothy knew at the Sunday meeting. But she wasn’t told that Dorothy figured it out Friday afternoon. She thinks that it’s bad enough that Dorothy is going to instantly stop hanging out with her. (According to what Sarah said back in book 3). Since Dorothy hung out with her on Saturday, Joyce thinks that she must have figured it out afterwards, possibly Sunday morning. And Joyce has not talked with Dorothy since the party.

    • BenRG
      BenRG
      September 11, 2015 at 3:10 am | #

Basically, Joyce is worried that Dorothy is mad at her because she misinterpreted something Ethan said as meaning that he wanted Joyce’s help to stop being gay. I’m not going to go as far as some and say that Joyce was actually trying to change Ethan’s orientation. I saw no sign of that unless that is why she played his girlfriend and I’m not sure that he particularly minded that; it suited some of his own agenda too.

That’s the real irony here: Joyce didn’t actually do anything wrong. If anyone were to ask Ethan I doubt he’d even know what they were talking about.

In my view, this is 100% about Joyce’s personal sense of guilt about ‘using’ Ethan to fulfil her college romance fantasies. There may be also an element of Joyce’s upbringing at work here; she’s having an identity crisis due to her changing perception about homosexuality. By not talking to Dorothy, she’s not confronting how much she’s changing in herself.

I have no doubt that, when she finally gets the courage to talk to Dorothy, Dorothy won’t know what the problem is and will end up having to deal with a hysterical Joyce who wants to be told she is a bad girl. This is an inevitable response of an upbringing full of ‘thou shalt nots’ and few if any ‘thou shalts’.

While I think Dorothy will probably take the attitude that all’s well now that Joyce has ended the relationship, she was in fact distressed at what Joyce was doing. I don’t think she’s going to tell Joyce there was never a problem.

(Also, I’m not sure how to interpret this strip except as Joyce telling Ethan to work at changing his orientation. She’s doing it with his consent, and she’s not applying any kind of force, but it’s still what she’s doing.)

At least in the North Carolina University system, the traditional one hour classes were MWF, with T/TH being the longer classes/ science labs. Most started at 8am and ended by 6(ish). There were night classes but nothing in my major used late time slots other than MBA programs.

I got screwed when I transferred in: three 3 credit classes only transferred 2/3rds of a point each, so I ended up taking 3 classes worth 9 credits just to get the one credit I was shorted.

Had to max out my allowed credits each semester, including my final senior semester, which was mostly 400 and 500 level business administration classes and all of those were still MWF and T/TH .

I think Joyce’s joke is interesting. I read the subtext as being that she thinks Becky ‘turned’ homosexual at some point. She’s got a bit of a way to go!

What I’m seeing is that Joyce *really* wants Becky to class with her, security or not.
Do I sense some jealousy ?

In an alternative universe where Joyce was into girls, she would be the one running around as goofballs with Becky. She can’t help being just a tad jealous of that other Joyce (and still feel just a tad guilty that she couldn’t be what Becky wanted her to be).

My theory is that is like the “Faking It” series, where (spoilers for season 1 and 2!) Amy gets on love with Karma,Karma reject Amy thinking of herself as straight,Amy gets a new girlfriend after Karma’s rejection, then Karma get a sexual dream with Amy at the end of ,implying that Karma could be bisexual and attracted to Amy after all.

Granted Joyce is a much better person than Karma, however…

I think she also wants Becky with her as a sort of security blanket. Becky is her best friend, and she’s dealing with some stressful feelings.

Bisexuals appear as a kind of grey-scale blur to Toedad, could be based around the Kinsey Scale. The gay-er you are, the more invisible you are.

Gray is more common in US English, but is sometimes used in English English. No, you read that right:) I prefer it as there’s no real British English IMO.
