For Joyce, sitting together on a bench IS first base. Holding hands is second. Holding hands without a chaperon present is third. Marrying the dude and bearing at least a half dozen of his children is home plate.
It’s almost as if she’s, like, I don’t know, a character or maybe even the MAIN Character of something like a TV show or webcommic…
I’m not going crazy, I’m telling you man, All these things happening in such a short time, it’s like it’s all just for someone’s entertainment or something…
I’m guessing Sal hasn’t been around Ethan long enough to notice certain things, but I think they did run into each other a few times. I remember Ethan having deja vu but Amber realized why he knew her. I don’t think he did.
Ethan felt that he had met her somewhere, but didn’t quite make the connection. He knows that the girl who took him hostage is at the school, but not that it’s Sal.
Sal pointed out to him that he did know her twin, Walky; they both figured that was why she looked familiar somehow (it was at Joyce’s party but I can’t be arsed to look it up right now).
I have a feeling Joyce is going to open up to Sal about everything, or a lot of things. The cigarette-in-mouth non-commitance makes her an excellent listener.
Amazi-Girl will have a meltdown when she finds out her Nemesis is actually a good person.
Could anyone explain the undertones of being trolled? It seems to mean something like being baited but is it positive, negative a sign of manipulation or what?
I only know trolling as in ‘dont’t feed the troll’ and this doesn’t apply here.
Please instruct this clueless German.
Trolling is, at its most basic level, playing tricks on people on the Internet, trying to get a reaction from people. It’s always at least slightly negative. Most frequently trolls just try to make people angry because it entertains them to provoke a reaction. I believe that Sal is referring to that aspect: she’s suggesting that Joyce is saying those things to play a joke or to provoke some reaction.
“Trolling is, at its most basic level, playing tricks on people on the Internet, trying to get a reaction from people. It’s always at least slightly negative. ”
This is pretty fair for your average internet interaction. But if you troll people that you know it doesn’t have to be negative, because the value of the relationship and understanding you share can swing the interplay between the two of you into the positive as friendly banter. Perhaps the next revolution in internet socialisation will be bringing us all close enough through shared empathy that this won’t just be true among friends.
(Jks, humans will totes be skeletons on fire from nuclear war/climate change/rapture before that happens. lololololololol)
Chrissy gave a pretty good summary. It’s derived from a fishing term, and generally refers to baiting people to get a reaction out of them.
People being people, and the internet being the internet, the desired reaction is often rage or a misguided attempt to educate someone.
CJ, it’s sort of like a (usually more extreme or slightly malicious) version of “pulling one’s leg,” if you’re familiar with that term.
“baiting people to get a reaction out of them.” –Years before the term “trolling” came about, but I totally did it with one guy I was hanging around with at the time. He was one of these people who is always right about everything, even if he’s never experienced something before and you have literally decades of experience with it. Used to drive me absolutely crazy arguing about stuff he didn’t have a clue about, as if he held all the knowledge and *I*, who had vastly more experience in it than he, didn’t know squat.
So I got back at him by arguing things that were blatantly wrong just to annoy him (which it did, in a most satisfactory manner, lol). Like, for example, once I argued that submarines blew their ballast to sink, rather than to rise; another time I argued that despite us both knowing perfectly well that in the Middle Ages, armour was actually blackened to prevent it from rusting, that actually even the stuff they wore in battle was kept shiny so they could use the reflective surface to flash sunlight into their opponent’s eyes and blind them–that one made him literally hopping mad, it was hilarious.
Childish, I know, but hey, college; plus he was really annoying when he did it, and when he did, he wasn’t trolling.
In this strip, Sal is learning that she actually doesn’t know anywhere nearly as much as she thought she did about Joyce and what’s going on about campus. I honestly think that her head will end up spinning if Joyce gives her a full update!
I don’t think that she is going to be happy about learning she ‘s been that out of touch!
Sal doesn’t strike me as someone who needs to know everything going on around campus. She seems reluctant to interact with people in general. People just keep pulling her into their stuff.
!! Dang. Heavensrun’s comment wasn’t posted yet (on my screen), until I posted. I’d say H was trolling (a post to draw a reaction?), but I spose that you can’t troll backwards in time. So, first in with a reference to the altext: well done!
I genuinely believe Sal doesn’t know Walky’s girlfriend’s name is Dorothy. I think she’s got her head so far up her motorcycle tail pipe she’s completely missed her brother is in a serious relationship (for probably the first time).
Of course, I also genuinely believe Joe has so much sex and goes on so many dates both bad and otherwise he doesn’t know Joyce’s name either–punching aside.
Actually, Sal knows her brother has a girlfriend and said she was nice, clever, and respectable. The kind you go for when you’re 30. Not the kind of girl Sal would roll her eyes at.
That was during tutoring with the bowtie TA whose name eludes me atm.
I think this is a good thing, because if this situation comes up again Sal can probably bully Walky or someone (or ask regularly Marcie) into walking Joyce back. Also because Joyce seems to be leaning toward seeing a therapist and either way has been encouraged to get help.
I feel like it took me WAAAY too long to notice Joyce was actually afraid to walk outside alone. Mostly because she never did it.
Not until she tried to split with Ethan and stepped outside to hallucinate a Ryan (that was the douche’s name, right) in every person walking by, was it spelled out clearly enough for me to see.

“He was my boyfriend, but not really. We didn’t even get off the bench.” Cause you know, first base.
His thing came nowhere near my tummy.
For Joyce, sitting together on a bench IS first base. Holding hands is second. Holding hands without a chaperon present is third. Marrying the dude and bearing at least a half dozen of his children is home plate.
Hers was a weird upbringing.
So a Grand Slam is the next half-dozen?
Having so many you get a reality series out of it is a grand slam.
No, it’s breakfast at Denny’s.
Denny’s “breakfast” is debateable
You mean debateably AWESOME!

Welcome to the space jam.
That’s what astronauts put on their toast…but also this.
Here’s your chance, do your dance, at the Space Jam, alright?
Little League games were particularly trying.
Because while you were leaning against walls pretending not to care Joyce went out and did a lot of shit.
What is she the flash?
Appearing to be cool doesn’t leave you much time for other activities.
She had to practice leaning against walls and disinterestedly look away from people a whole lot.
Exactly! There’s a lot of stuff happening out there and Joyce seems to have been at the center of most of it!
It’s almost as if she’s, like, I don’t know, a character or maybe even the MAIN Character of something like a TV show or webcommic…

Na Sal that’some just the DoA Universes sense of humor.
This strip makes me very happy
I mean, because they’re talking and becoming friends. Not because trauma makes me happy or anything^^
So you say….

Oh yeah, I forgot Joyce was the Ding Dong Ditcher.
You mean the “Whiteboard Dingdong Bandit”? Isn’t a Ding Dong Ditcher some human who rings someone’s doorbell, then runs off before getting caught?
Actually, that kinda sounds like fun…
Now we must approach people’s doors, leave phallic drawings on them, and leave before being noticed.
Guess Sal really likes her guys nerdy and bigger than her….I wonder who fits that bill.
I don’t think she paid enough attention to Ethan to realize he’s nerdy.
Alternate comment: “…butcha yank dem pants an’…”
Okay, Sal, I know you mean well, but it’s not great to be snarky when the homeschool girl is having a panic attack while she opens up to you.
I don’t think she knows how to not snark anymore.
Sal’s line in the last panel has just been added to my top 5 favourite lines in this comic!
Not the top spot, though. That one is still held by Mike, when he answered Joyce’s phone.
As it should…
“How come everything you say makes me feel like ah’m being trolled?”
Would make an interesting book title…
Sal’s eyebrow in panel 3 lolololol
Sal sure is finding out a lot of things about Joyce.
Trolling of Age.
You mean, that’s not the actual title ?
Do you feel a growing sense of dread?
It always was here.
So Sal is not only acquainted with Amber’s boyfriend, but now she’s making eyes at her other close friend.
I predict only good things.
Yeah,what bad things could happen?
Entirely tangential to this comic (actually, kinda perpendicular to it), but am I the only one who thinks of Walky as Sal’s LITTLE brother?
It’s not impossible. Even twins have to be born sequentially.
She mentioned he was her little brother in http://www.dumbingofage.com/2013/comic/book-3/01-if-the-shoes-split/avail/
Sure, for both size and mentality, but betcha that in a sick sense of irony, David is probably the older Walkerton of the 2.
(yeah, it’d be kinda weird to call him Walky there, they are BOTH walkies ^^;)
Sal’d probably punch you for calling her Walky.
Damn Willis, that alt text….
Is Sal supposed to be the audience stand in here?
I have a feeling Joyce is going to open up to Sal about everything, or a lot of things. The cigarette-in-mouth non-commitance makes her an excellent listener.
Sal pretends that she doesn’t remembers a person’s name. Thus by law of sarcasm she should hook up with Joe.
Don’t worry, Sal, it’s a common reaction. Just read the FAQ before you start calling Joyce a Strawman
Amazi-Girl will have a meltdown when she finds out her Nemesis is actually a good person.

Trolls = people who engage in trolling
The internet is like a zoo.The only problem is that it doesn’t have ,,no feeding” signs.
Actually, we have a full category of them
I really had no idea of the existence of those signs, thanks.

So now 3 random people with no connection to each other know that Joyce can’t walk alone.
I can’t tell whether you are being sarcastic.
Can you feel the bonding tonight ^^
James Bonding.
I genuinely believe Sal doesn’t know Walky’s girlfriend’s name is Dorothy. I think she’s got her head so far up her motorcycle tail pipe she’s completely missed her brother is in a serious relationship (for probably the first time).

Joe and Joyce are both in the gender studies class.

That was during tutoring with the bowtie TA whose name eludes me atm.
Joyce is just that special kind of crazy. ~<3
Joyce, the infamous Ding Dong Doodler!
Imagine her in a Riddle costume. But with Ding Dongs on it.
What? Amazi-Girl needs her own Rogues Gallery.
Amazi-girl won’t be walking you through campus, I’m afraid.
Oh my god…I just read the alt-text.
The only three people who know about Joyce’s mental state right now…
…are the three major players in the convenience store holdup.
DAMN YOU, WILLIS.
Actually, Amazi-Girl wasn’t born yet. She was conceived then, but she wasn’t a person yet.
Wait… Amazi-Girl has two mommies?
And a gay daddy, apparently. So, 3 parents ?
The convenience store clerk knows?!?!?!
Even everyone in-comic agrees Ethan needs a Slipshine.
Especially Joyce.
Alt text hinting Amazi-Girl is Ethan
Or Sal (my pet theory). That scene where Amazi-girl beats her up is metaphorical.
Nah Sal can’t be Ethan, they spoke together at Joyce’s dorm party.
Come to think of it, Sal (and Carla for that matter) are surprisingly nonplussed about Amazi-Girl despite her trying to assault at the parking lot.
*insert Inigo Montoya quote here*
… Bugger, how did I screw that up? The definition of nonplussed, since I can’t botch a link.
dangit dude your making me seem unsmartly on the internet
Considering I botched my attempt to correct you wittily, you’ve got good company there. >_>
I can never get those either, and I’m a computer science student.
I thought of Hostess Ding Dongs when she said that.
Will Joyce have her Start of Darkness soon and become the Hostess Ding Dong Bandit?
Could it be… Sal is Joyce’s therapist-substitute friend…?
I think this is a good thing, because if this situation comes up again Sal can probably bully Walky or someone (or ask regularly Marcie) into walking Joyce back. Also because Joyce seems to be leaning toward seeing a therapist and either way has been encouraged to get help.
I feel like it took me WAAAY too long to notice Joyce was actually afraid to walk outside alone. Mostly because she never did it.

While I’m pondering things… is this count of comments strictly linear, or does it follow some other system?
If the former, there are now 850,085 comments for this webcomic. We will probably hit a million in a year. O.O
