She’s used to her and Joyce being a single unit, and it’s taking her a bit to get used to the idea that her “other half” is now halfing it up with other people too. She’ll get there, it’s just jarring for someone that sheltered to realize.
At times, yes, but that playfulness is used to take the edge off her being completely serious.
I know someone like this. He posts stuff on FB about “when someone else calls your BFF their BFF” and similar. It’s sad, because I feel like it hides deep insecurities, a fear that if they’re not constantly reinforcing that this important person to them thinks highly of them then maybe they actually don’t. I definitely feel that it’s a case of fear and insecurity with Becky.
And it’s not healthy. To be controlling of another person’s feelings and social life is not a good thing to do. To feel jealous and possessive because they care for another person is really unhealthy.
So… yeah. Even when Becky’s joking about it I get the feeling she’s actually not joking about it. And I see it as a really problematic behaviour stemming from unaddressed issues.
That’s kind of what I thought Raidah miiiight have been doing when she inquired about the “chicks”… Sure, she might not think of herself as a jealous person, but she probably is worried about Sarah’s advances toward Jacob. She acts like it’s ridiculous, but she does so by pointing out Sarah’s weak points and trying to undermine Jacob’s view of her. It’s even possible that this isn’t jealousy but a sort of revenge for Sarah’s actions… that Jacob mentioned Sarah’s behavior toward him, and she decided to date him so that Sarah couldn’t have him… At any rate, whether the relationship started out of rivalry or not, Sarah and Raidah really consider themselves rivals, and for Raidah, Jacob is an important piece in the game that she doesn’t want to lose to her opponent. That may or may not be her primary view of the relationship, hard to say.
Hm. I don’t think so. I mean, she might unconsciously take glee in the idea that Sarah can’t have Jacob- IF she’s worked out that Sarah’s interested.
There’s no hint that Raidah even knew Jacob knew Sarah prior to the party, and from her behaviour I think she’s got far stronger feelings about Jacob hanging out with Joe than with Sarah. I think that may be why she repeated the word “chicks”- not to emphasise that they were female but to emphasise Joe’s word choice.
In fact, thinking back to her behaviour towards Sarah, I feel that she probably is as self-assured as she comes across and that might be a part of the problem. It seems to me that she perhaps can’t admit that there’s a side to the story she simply couldn’t see. But this is very much guesswork at this stage.
I would love to see more of Raidah and get to know her better as a character.
It’s no inherently unhealthy to have those feelings. You can’t just will your feelings away. It’s how you react to them and act on them that really matter.
Becky has had only a couple weeks to adjust to NOT being Joyce’s only closer friend, after a lifetime of being inseparable. So yeah, she’s not 100% joking either, but she’s still adjusting.
Plus all tied up with Joyce being her only safe connection to her old life and to her being still very dependent on Joyce.
For all her brashness, Becky’s very vulnerable.
Becky is essentially instigating a rivalry for position of Joyce’s ‘BFF’ because she feels insecure. She’s both the one starting it and the only one who cares about it.
I don’t know. I’m too old and introverted to use my own experience. When other folks think of inviting Joe and Joyce unbeknownst to be in the same place, do they really have to worry about a conflict?
They have a baseline “getting along” at this point, it seems to me. Joe and Joyce almost bicker like siblings. Joe, especially, seems to be interested in making points against Joyce’s plans; that seems the most he’s engaged in talking to a female* he doesn’t want to have an “assignation” with. (*Or even a male; contrast to when Joe asked Danny, “Can’t you ask me how big her knockers were?” when Danny wated to talk re dating & feelings.)
I’m interested in more uncovering of Joe’s backstory, the little bits out about his parents arguing. Joyce may be the person he opens up to. I can see that being a good thing for both.
I agree that when Joe reveals nuances about himself (beyond the completely superficial persona he usually presents), it is invariably interesting to read. And I also agree that Joe and Joyce are (somehow) very good for each other, each drawing out truths that the other has not recognised about themself.
Ironically, all of this is only possible because Joyce has managed to move herself to the very bottom of Joe’s “list”. (And there are grannies on that list!)
Yes, but not THE “Becky with the good hair”. Offscreen, there’s been a whole storyline where Becky meets Beyoncé and explains there must have been a misunderstanding because Becky is 500% a lesbian and therefore wouldn’t have been after Jay-Z even if she knew who he was. Beyoncé explained what a “becky” is, and she and Becky were both initially put off by one another but are now pen pals.

If it was adults plotting to use a teenage girl as bait, that’s one thing. Teenage girls risking one of themselves is entirely different. Mind you, Ryan’s likely not that dangerous once you’ve identified him and know his MO. Present yourself as a target. Wait for him to give you the drink – don’t drink it. Call in the backup to keep him from getting away. Present the cops with the drink as evidence.
Is it just me that’s like…a little confused? I feel like this is the biggest scene change in a strip. One moment Dorothy’s in the dorm hallway, next strip she’s at Galasso’s. I feel like I missed a strip.
I dunno, I think it’s pretty clear that Carla must have actually bounced this time (at least for now, I don’t buy it long-term), and Dorothy sought out Becky for advice.
The trip to Galasso’s probably wasn’t too interesting
Makes sense for her current priorities; I figured she basically did exactly that, since Becky knows Joyce better than anyone else and knows about the Incident.
I didn’t really think too much about it, but now you mention it, it is a liiitle jarring. I was expecting a strip with her and Carla, but I guess Carla was only there for the punchline yesterday (which still works hahaha). I think this would’ve worked better if we came to this strip after seeing some other folks because then the passing time would’ve felt more natural instead of being pretty sudden.
Yeah that probably would have worked. A quick little strip with other people is usually very good for implying a passage of time. I’m glad I’m not the only one who was confused!
Yep, Robin herself kind of wants to do it herself already. She’s kiiiind of busy at the moment though, so that makes everything the more complica for everyone.
I find it odd that people have been saying Dorothy is blitzed/smashed, even commenting on her ability to walk and not give away her drunkenness. There’s a huge spectrum of “affected by alcohol”, and from her behaviour (and remembering that we have seen her behave more drunk than this the one other time we’ve seen her drink) it seems like she’s tipsy or buzzed to me, no more.
I know she was drinking with Billie. My comment is about how drunk she is and the words a lot of commenters seem to be using to describe it.
We saw her have one swig/sip, as well. As I said, she comes across as having drunk just enough to give her a buzz- and the bubbles.
I’m really just being a pedant over terminology, but I like words.
They all MEAN ‘drunk’, but their connotations change their places on the scale of drunkenness with ‘tipsy’ and ‘buzzed’ being closer to a sober state than ‘wasted’, ‘smashed’ or ‘blitzed’.
Ok now that they’re alone I’d like Dorothy to ask Becky exactly what her problem is because most of the time they’re together Becky always seems to make some sort of snarky remark to Dorothy so I think it’d be interesting if Becky could verbalize her feelings towards about Joyce to Dorothy especially now Becky has Dina
Becky’s problem is that she’s immature and see’s Dorothy as a threat to her position as Joyce’s #1 most important person, coupled with still having feelings for Joyce, and expresses this by occasionally acting like a turdbucket.
Dorothy’s too non-confrontational to see it as anything other than Becky being wacky, or do anything about it.
Basically what Spencer said. I’m not sure if Becky might also subconsciously want Dorothy to bring it back up to Joyce because she knows it would also damage Joyce’s relationship with Dorothy, thus ensuring that she still remains Joyce’s closest friend. (It’s fairly obvious that Becky still has feelings for Joyce, and she may be settling for just being her best friend, but in order for that to happen, she has to make sure her spot doesn’t get “usurped”.)
Again, this need not be something Becky is intentionally wishing to happen, but people are complicated emotional machines, and sometimes tiny subconscious desires can spur us to do little things that have big consequences. If you’ve ever said something you know your friend/partner finds SUPER hurtful just because you’re feeling incredibly angry/upset and you wanted to lash out at them, you’ve been through the exact same situation.
I’m not convinced that Dorothy’s too non-confrontational to say anything, personally. I agree that she’s not picking up on Becky’s issue with her- although she has outright asked Becky why she doesn’t like her before. She is likely to be diplomatic about it, and I’m guessing weigh up the pros and cons of speaking up about it before deciding what to say- if anything.
I’m getting a bit worried about Sal. We haven’t seen her for more than 24 hours comic time, Marcie’s angry with her and she did not wear a mask on Sunday night, so both Ryan and the security people can easily recognize her…
We saw her just yesterday, comic time. AG can’t press charges for assault, and the guys would fall under defence of a third party considering three guys were holding AG down so their friend could knock her teeth in. I think she’ll most likely be fine.
I’m far more worried about Sal accidentally spilling the beans about Ryan before Dorothy can tell her, as Sal seems to think Joyce already knows.
Given their most recent interaction, I think it’s safe to say AG wouldn’t press charges even if she could. I’m really happy about that movement towards making peace with that part of her past.
I hope Becky, Dorothy and Joyce end up as a three-way best friend gang (with Dina as a hanger-on who mostly interacts with Becky but everyone still likes her)
As we’ve seen, she can walk straight and still knows how to speak to people appropriately so she is drunk, but not enough that it is severely impacting her awareness.
I honestly don’t see how Becky is wrong. She completely changed for Becky. Yes, Joyce defended Dorothy from her parents, but she has full out Scripture to back her up.
It’s also just clear that Joyce and Becky know each other much better. And, since Dorothy is busy so often, she and Joyce just don’t get to spend enough time with each other.
So, yeah. Becky is Joyce’s best friend, and she would probably pick Becky over Dorothy if ever forced to choose. She’s nowhere near as close to Dorothy as she was now that Becky is back.
I can see that, but at the same time she changed a lot for Dorothy too – she backed her new position up with scripture, but her position itself radically shifted and she became far more accepting. Becky even notes how much college changed her. A large chunk of that was Dorothy.
Panel One: Yeeeeaaaaah, this is something Dorothy needs to hear. It’s unpleasant and vicious and hard to decide, but it’s got to sooner or later. Preferably sooner. Seriously, Dorothy, Sal lives NEXT DOOR and thinks Joyce knows about this. You gotta tell her.
I also like Becky’s face here. She clearly thinks Joyce will handle this conversation a lot better than Dorothy’s worst case scenario brain thinks she will. And so she thinks that, yeah, this is the obvious choice.
Panel Two: Normally this would be a good strategy. And it’s a very Dorothy strategy. Measured decisions, careful thought and planning. Watch and see where things are going before you open your trap. Proceed slowly with caution. Make sure you know what you’re doing.
But that’s not a workable solution here, as time may be of the essence. If nothing else, to keep Ryan from dropping off the radar. This is important and there isn’t really a perfect way to tell Joyce about Ryan. And tripping over finding one takes more time and makes it more awkward than necessary.
Panel Three: Well, now that’s uncertain. Roz hasn’t done anything to Robin other than show everyone the picture. She didn’t take it, nor did she submit it. Although, Robin may be pissy with her anyways because Roz introduced her to Leslie, Dorothy doesn’t know that. And to be honest, this is a weak excuse – I think Roz would sooner throw herself out a window than campaign for RA instead of helping track down a bona fide, actual factual roofie rapist. And Dorothy should know that. And burnt bridges or no, Roz will need to be watched by the campaign to avoid any more sex tape scandals. She doesn’t need Robin to charm her staff.
Panel Four: Yeah, this sounds about right. At some point something becomes too intimidating so you start stalling. And that’s no fun, but it’s a thing you have to do. And Becky’s not saying this to rub it into to Dorothy – it’s true. She’s sympathetic to Dorothy’s problem, but she also knows this guy is dangerous and needs to be stopped quickly. It’s a fair assessment of the situation. And if anyone knows about fast acting, it’s Becky.
Panel Five: Becky has known Joyce very well for a very long time – she probably does know her better than Dorothy, because she’s known her longer. And yeah, this sounds about right. While the last time Joyce mentioned this to Dorothy, it was her not wanting to think about it and becoming upset when it was mentioned, she also told AG she wanted him caught and not to get away. Even if it was just an AG beat down. This guy needs to be stopped, permanently, and he’ll never get to jail if they do nothing. That would matter to Joyce. And yeah, I think Dorothy knew that on some level. But once it comes from someone else who loves and knows Joyce as much as she does, its easier to accept it as a fact and not a rationalization she’s coming up with to make herself feel better about having to have an upsetting conversation with her.
Panel Six: Oh Becky, you jealous butt. At least here she seems playful, and not overly malicious. This seems to be in ‘playful ribbing rivalry’ for now. I’d be concerned if she ever acted viciously towards Dorothy again, but so far this seems decent ish. She’s not over Joyce and probably hasn’t accepted new friends yet, but I’m sure she’ll get there eventually.
Well I wonder about that, I mean Becky knew the old Joyce, the home-schooled Joyce but I’d suggest that through her experiences, both good and bad, Joyce has changed and is a some what different person then to what Becky knows whereas Dorothy has been with the “new” Joyce from the very beginning
Also theres a, imho, a little bit of snark in that last comment based on the emphasis placed on the bestest and me and I’m hoping that with Dorothy being a bit drunk that (dutch courage) she’ll bring it up with Becky

There’s no hint that Raidah even knew Jacob knew Sarah prior to the party, and from her behaviour I think she’s got far stronger feelings about Jacob hanging out with Joe than with Sarah. I think that may be why she repeated the word “chicks”- not to emphasise that they were female but to emphasise Joe’s word choice.
In fact, thinking back to her behaviour towards Sarah, I feel that she probably is as self-assured as she comes across and that might be a part of the problem. It seems to me that she perhaps can’t admit that there’s a side to the story she simply couldn’t see. But this is very much guesswork at this stage.
I would love to see more of Raidah and get to know her better as a character.
I don’t know about that, but I do think she’s joking about calling herself so awesome that she doesn’t have to worry about it.
It’s no inherently unhealthy to have those feelings. You can’t just will your feelings away. It’s how you react to them and act on them that really matter.
Becky has had only a couple weeks to adjust to NOT being Joyce’s only closer friend, after a lifetime of being inseparable. So yeah, she’s not 100% joking either, but she’s still adjusting.
Plus all tied up with Joyce being her only safe connection to her old life and to her being still very dependent on Joyce.
For all her brashness, Becky’s very vulnerable.

I don’t know. I’m too old and introverted to use my own experience. When other folks think of inviting Joe and Joyce unbeknownst to be in the same place, do they really have to worry about a conflict?
They have a baseline “getting along” at this point, it seems to me. Joe and Joyce almost bicker like siblings. Joe, especially, seems to be interested in making points against Joyce’s plans; that seems the most he’s engaged in talking to a female* he doesn’t want to have an “assignation” with. (*Or even a male; contrast to when Joe asked Danny, “Can’t you ask me how big her knockers were?” when Danny wated to talk re dating & feelings.)
I’m interested in more uncovering of Joe’s backstory, the little bits out about his parents arguing. Joyce may be the person he opens up to. I can see that being a good thing for both.
I agree that when Joe reveals nuances about himself (beyond the completely superficial persona he usually presents), it is invariably interesting to read. And I also agree that Joe and Joyce are (somehow) very good for each other, each drawing out truths that the other has not recognised about themself.
Ironically, all of this is only possible because Joyce has managed to move herself to the very bottom of Joe’s “list”. (And there are grannies on that list!)

I didn’t really think too much about it, but now you mention it, it is a liiitle jarring. I was expecting a strip with her and Carla, but I guess Carla was only there for the punchline yesterday (which still works hahaha). I think this would’ve worked better if we came to this strip after seeing some other folks because then the passing time would’ve felt more natural instead of being pretty sudden.
Yeah that probably would have worked. A quick little strip with other people is usually very good for implying a passage of time. I’m glad I’m not the only one who was confused!

I find it odd that people have been saying Dorothy is blitzed/smashed, even commenting on her ability to walk and not give away her drunkenness. There’s a huge spectrum of “affected by alcohol”, and from her behaviour (and remembering that we have seen her behave more drunk than this the one other time we’ve seen her drink) it seems like she’s tipsy or buzzed to me, no more.
She was drinking with Billie and still has drunk bubbles. Last time she passed out from one glass of diluted booze.
I know she was drinking with Billie. My comment is about how drunk she is and the words a lot of commenters seem to be using to describe it.
We saw her have one swig/sip, as well. As I said, she comes across as having drunk just enough to give her a buzz- and the bubbles.

I find buzzed and tipsy are just words that people use to avoid saying drunk. Sure, it means “a little bit drunk,” but it’s still drunk.
The other words are more hyperbole.
They all MEAN ‘drunk’, but their connotations change their places on the scale of drunkenness with ‘tipsy’ and ‘buzzed’ being closer to a sober state than ‘wasted’, ‘smashed’ or ‘blitzed’.
Technically, buzzed means “enough alcohol in your system to get you high, but not enough to impair your judgement, inhibitions, and/or motor control.”
Tipsy means drunk.
Ok now that they’re alone I’d like Dorothy to ask Becky exactly what her problem is because most of the time they’re together Becky always seems to make some sort of snarky remark to Dorothy so I think it’d be interesting if Becky could verbalize her feelings towards about Joyce to Dorothy especially now Becky has Dina
Becky’s problem is that she’s immature and see’s Dorothy as a threat to her position as Joyce’s #1 most important person, coupled with still having feelings for Joyce, and expresses this by occasionally acting like a turdbucket.
Dorothy’s too non-confrontational to see it as anything other than Becky being wacky, or do anything about it.

Basically what Spencer said. I’m not sure if Becky might also subconsciously want Dorothy to bring it back up to Joyce because she knows it would also damage Joyce’s relationship with Dorothy, thus ensuring that she still remains Joyce’s closest friend. (It’s fairly obvious that Becky still has feelings for Joyce, and she may be settling for just being her best friend, but in order for that to happen, she has to make sure her spot doesn’t get “usurped”.)
Again, this need not be something Becky is intentionally wishing to happen, but people are complicated emotional machines, and sometimes tiny subconscious desires can spur us to do little things that have big consequences. If you’ve ever said something you know your friend/partner finds SUPER hurtful just because you’re feeling incredibly angry/upset and you wanted to lash out at them, you’ve been through the exact same situation.
I’m not convinced that Dorothy’s too non-confrontational to say anything, personally. I agree that she’s not picking up on Becky’s issue with her- although she has outright asked Becky why she doesn’t like her before. She is likely to be diplomatic about it, and I’m guessing weigh up the pros and cons of speaking up about it before deciding what to say- if anything.

I’m getting a bit worried about Sal. We haven’t seen her for more than 24 hours comic time, Marcie’s angry with her and she did not wear a mask on Sunday night, so both Ryan and the security people can easily recognize her…
We saw her just yesterday, comic time. AG can’t press charges for assault, and the guys would fall under defence of a third party considering three guys were holding AG down so their friend could knock her teeth in. I think she’ll most likely be fine.
I’m far more worried about Sal accidentally spilling the beans about Ryan before Dorothy can tell her, as Sal seems to think Joyce already knows.
Given their most recent interaction, I think it’s safe to say AG wouldn’t press charges even if she could. I’m really happy about that movement towards making peace with that part of her past.
I hope Becky, Dorothy and Joyce end up as a three-way best friend gang (with Dina as a hanger-on who mostly interacts with Becky but everyone still likes her)

I honestly don’t see how Becky is wrong. She completely changed for Becky. Yes, Joyce defended Dorothy from her parents, but she has full out Scripture to back her up.
It’s also just clear that Joyce and Becky know each other much better. And, since Dorothy is busy so often, she and Joyce just don’t get to spend enough time with each other.
So, yeah. Becky is Joyce’s best friend, and she would probably pick Becky over Dorothy if ever forced to choose. She’s nowhere near as close to Dorothy as she was now that Becky is back.
I can see that, but at the same time she changed a lot for Dorothy too – she backed her new position up with scripture, but her position itself radically shifted and she became far more accepting. Becky even notes how much college changed her. A large chunk of that was Dorothy.
Panel One: Yeeeeaaaaah, this is something Dorothy needs to hear. It’s unpleasant and vicious and hard to decide, but it’s got to sooner or later. Preferably sooner. Seriously, Dorothy, Sal lives NEXT DOOR and thinks Joyce knows about this. You gotta tell her.
I also like Becky’s face here. She clearly thinks Joyce will handle this conversation a lot better than Dorothy’s worst case scenario brain thinks she will. And so she thinks that, yeah, this is the obvious choice.
Panel Two: Normally this would be a good strategy. And it’s a very Dorothy strategy. Measured decisions, careful thought and planning. Watch and see where things are going before you open your trap. Proceed slowly with caution. Make sure you know what you’re doing.
But that’s not a workable solution here, as time may be of the essence. If nothing else, to keep Ryan from dropping off the radar. This is important and there isn’t really a perfect way to tell Joyce about Ryan. And tripping over finding one takes more time and makes it more awkward than necessary.
Panel Three: Well, now that’s uncertain. Roz hasn’t done anything to Robin other than show everyone the picture. She didn’t take it, nor did she submit it. Although, Robin may be pissy with her anyways because Roz introduced her to Leslie, Dorothy doesn’t know that. And to be honest, this is a weak excuse – I think Roz would sooner throw herself out a window than campaign for RA instead of helping track down a bona fide, actual factual roofie rapist. And Dorothy should know that. And burnt bridges or no, Roz will need to be watched by the campaign to avoid any more sex tape scandals. She doesn’t need Robin to charm her staff.
Panel Four: Yeah, this sounds about right. At some point something becomes too intimidating so you start stalling. And that’s no fun, but it’s a thing you have to do. And Becky’s not saying this to rub it into to Dorothy – it’s true. She’s sympathetic to Dorothy’s problem, but she also knows this guy is dangerous and needs to be stopped quickly. It’s a fair assessment of the situation. And if anyone knows about fast acting, it’s Becky.
Panel Five: Becky has known Joyce very well for a very long time – she probably does know her better than Dorothy, because she’s known her longer. And yeah, this sounds about right. While the last time Joyce mentioned this to Dorothy, it was her not wanting to think about it and becoming upset when it was mentioned, she also told AG she wanted him caught and not to get away. Even if it was just an AG beat down. This guy needs to be stopped, permanently, and he’ll never get to jail if they do nothing. That would matter to Joyce. And yeah, I think Dorothy knew that on some level. But once it comes from someone else who loves and knows Joyce as much as she does, its easier to accept it as a fact and not a rationalization she’s coming up with to make herself feel better about having to have an upsetting conversation with her.
Panel Six: Oh Becky, you jealous butt. At least here she seems playful, and not overly malicious. This seems to be in ‘playful ribbing rivalry’ for now. I’d be concerned if she ever acted viciously towards Dorothy again, but so far this seems decent ish. She’s not over Joyce and probably hasn’t accepted new friends yet, but I’m sure she’ll get there eventually.
Well I wonder about that, I mean Becky knew the old Joyce, the home-schooled Joyce but I’d suggest that through her experiences, both good and bad, Joyce has changed and is a some what different person then to what Becky knows whereas Dorothy has been with the “new” Joyce from the very beginning
Also theres a, imho, a little bit of snark in that last comment based on the emphasis placed on the bestest and me and I’m hoping that with Dorothy being a bit drunk that (dutch courage) she’ll bring it up with Becky
Oh yeah, part of it is definitely bitter jealousy, but it’s coming out in playful ways rather than hurtful ones.
