Except for the ones that didn’t. A lot of those pandemic deaths were entirely preventable. Hundreds of thousands more of “us” would have survived those first four years if the party in power hadn’t fucked up the response so bad.
I was actually making preparations to leave the country at the time (learning the language spoken in my bestie’s country, who had even spontaneously offered to marry me to get me citizenship), but the shitshow of America’s pandemic response got it travel-banned from most of the civilized world, including from that country. By the time restrictions were lifted, it was too late.
I haven’t heard from bestie in nearly a year now (hopefully due to unrelated reasons), so that avenue does not seem to be open anymore. And I’m kind of terrified as to what might happen if I try again.
That’s the thing. This feeling of dread isn’t a lack optimism, it’s because they keep saying “we will get through this” when the reality is “No. Not all of will make it through this.”. We all know that’s not true anymore.
I’m not sure what to feel today. I’m in Puerto Rico and we had elections too, but the crappy part about living in a colony (I’m sorry, Commonwealth) is that I have to worry about two governments. The people who won here last night have all been investigated or involved in corruption scandals and are basically the Trumpers (and ardent supporters of his) here. I also don’t need to tell you guys about how that administration treated the island after hurricane Maria AND the Pandemic. And the worst part? At least you guys GET to vote for president, we do not. We have absolutely no say in American government and our local government is more corrupt than Gotham city. It’s the first time in my life that I’m hopeless for literally everyone, including the MAGA crowd.
Hopelessness is not necessarily complete despair, and if it’s any consolation, lack of certain KINDS of hope I wreckon are actually a good thing.

Joyce would be terminally embarrassed and explain that she meant to send it to Joe. Walky would delete the photo and move on. Both would agree to forget about this minor incident and decide to go get lunch as usual. There, they run into Joe. They’re both a little nervous but no big deal. Moments later, some huge dramatic event occurs, signaling the beginning of the next story arc.
Several months pass. Joe discovers the photo, which wasn’t deleted. He sees the timestamp and remembers that about an hour later he saw Walky and Joyce together and that both were visibly nervous when they saw him. Drama ensues.

Except for the ones that didn’t. A lot of those pandemic deaths were entirely preventable. Hundreds of thousands more of “us” would have survived those first four years if the party in power hadn’t fucked up the response so bad.
I was actually making preparations to leave the country at the time (learning the language spoken in my bestie’s country, who had even spontaneously offered to marry me to get me citizenship), but the shitshow of America’s pandemic response got it travel-banned from most of the civilized world, including from that country. By the time restrictions were lifted, it was too late.
I haven’t heard from bestie in nearly a year now (hopefully due to unrelated reasons), so that avenue does not seem to be open anymore. And I’m kind of terrified as to what might happen if I try again.
That’s the thing. This feeling of dread isn’t a lack optimism, it’s because they keep saying “we will get through this” when the reality is “No. Not all of will make it through this.”. We all know that’s not true anymore.
I’m not sure what to feel today. I’m in Puerto Rico and we had elections too, but the crappy part about living in a colony (I’m sorry, Commonwealth) is that I have to worry about two governments. The people who won here last night have all been investigated or involved in corruption scandals and are basically the Trumpers (and ardent supporters of his) here. I also don’t need to tell you guys about how that administration treated the island after hurricane Maria AND the Pandemic. And the worst part? At least you guys GET to vote for president, we do not. We have absolutely no say in American government and our local government is more corrupt than Gotham city. It’s the first time in my life that I’m hopeless for literally everyone, including the MAGA crowd.

Hopelessness is not necessarily complete despair, and if it’s any consolation, lack of certain KINDS of hope I wreckon are actually a good thing.
If there’s anything this comic can teach us (really hoping we don’t eventually gotta break the law to enjoy it), it’s that often times progress can only be made once we stop hoping for the impossible:
– hoping for a just universe
– hoping for destructive, manipulative individuals to magically change into decent human beings with some magic sequence of words like IRL is a disney flick
– hoping to reconcile ideologies and visions for the future which are simply incompatible
– hoping for novelties like “first XYZ-demographic president” of this nation we were born into by chance to magically solve what’s deeply wrong with how things are done here
If we’re to get anywhere, we gotta start seeing things in this country for what they ARE, not merely going off of what they’re *supposed* to be.
Time for us to do as Dina says: “renounce magical thinking, and embrace empirical evidence”.

It could be worse. It could have been Becky. I can only imagine the drama if Becky thought that Joyce had finally accepted that she’s into girls and were meant to be together. Becky being impulsive, she’d go into a tizzy worrying about what to do about Dina, and ask the wrong people for advice. When it got back to Joe he’d find himself conflicted. New Joe would be concerned that Joyce was going off the deep end and wondering if she was cheating on him with Becky. Old Joe would wonder if the door had just opened to a Becky-Joyce-Joe three-way. I feel sure he’d also ask the wrong people for advice.
It could be worse, Scenario Two: Joyce sends the photo to Walky, who would take it at face value. He’d be concerned about betraying Joe. I imagine Walky going to Joyce to ask about it in person. Joyce would be terminally embarrassed and explain that she meant to send it to Joe. Walky would delete the photo and move on. Both would agree to forget about this minor incident and decide to go get lunch as usual. There, they run into Joe. They’re both a little nervous but no big deal. Moments later, some huge dramatic event occurs, signaling the beginning of the next story arc.
Several months pass. Joe discovers the photo, which wasn’t deleted. He sees the timestamp and remembers that about an hour later he saw Walky and Joyce together and that both were visibly nervous when they saw him. Drama ensues.
