Same with israel, that’s why the Roomies! beer story arc was always surreal to me – they would’ve been in legal drinking age in israel. Although if Roomies!\ DOA was REALLY in israel, they would’ve been in the IDF, so…
If it was in Jamaica, he would be of drinking age since he is a living human. Yeah, no laws at all concerning age as of the late 90s. Was rather surreal to see how much was purchased by a group of teenagers.
I figured Mike/Your Mom has won already since that was clearly going on since before the start of the strip. Possibly even before Mike was born. Mike/Your Mom is that much of a multiversal constant.
+1 Leading to complications, because Joyce will certainly want to legitimize boning after the fact by getting married (or at least engaged) right away.
Is there a correct way to deliver that “are”? Because I keep reading it in a breathy porno-actress voice and hitting the consonants too hard, like as soon as she’s done saying it she’ll go “And you need to be punished.”
Yes that is correct. However, as a 21st century English speaker, especially in American comics, It is rare to see “you are” rather than “You’re” and it’s also rare for someone to phrase it like that, unless they are putting emphesis on either “you” or “are”.
Try reading it like a line from the script of a poorly-written “just say no” skit from the 90s.
Don’t get me wrong, I like Joe’s punchline, but honestly, Joyce not using contractions is the funniest part of the strip to me. I find it utterly hilarious.
Nope, more like all those 50’s shorts on the evils of hankypanky, smoking and the dope ….. dang it dope used to only refer to the epoxy used in preparing the cloth for aircraft but some idiot started sniffing the stuff and now look what its done to the language…..
I’m shocked, SHOCKED (!) to find that underage drinking occurs at college! How much else, out of everything what I’ve been told all my life, is wrong? Is the earth not 6000 years old? Do babies not come from storks? Does God play dice with the universe?
1. 62%, give or take.
2. It is, and then some. It stopped counting after the first billion years, though.
3. Some babies do. Stork babies, for instance.
4. They used to, but the universe kept insisting that God’s dice weren’t perfectly random, and, well, yeah, it’s a bit of a sore point with both of them.
I heard that the big throwdown was when, after the game, God was heard going around telling people about how he had loaded the dice. After that was when the Universe refused to play with him anymore.
One would think that Joyce wouldn’t be all that shocked by the things that Joe gets into by now. I mean, he’s already got a sex tape with a politician’s relative out on the internet. A little drinking doesn’t really feel that shocking in comparison.
Happy Nonbinary People's Day, you gemstones. A year or two back we introduced FLASH GORDON's first enby, the outlaw lawman Bones Malock. Having known and loved a lot of nonbinary people, I knew the truest way to represent you was as a unsettling desert pirate with a lightning sword
Happy International Non-Binary People's Day to all those who work, create, parent, protest, love and live without ever fitting into someone else's category.
Okay, everyone's jumping to conclusions, but Joyce was hit with a mysterious pink gas in Thursday's strip.
Now, in recent years, the police are known to increasingly use military grade weapons.
Which reminded me of this bit of proposed technology from the 1990s:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gay_bomb
hey, kid, what do you want to play with from the cool superhero movie? is it a nude, melting senator who feels like a stretch armstrong doll that has been left out in the son and maybe mildly chewed by a neighborhood dog? WELL, SON, YOU'RE IN LUCK!
Joyce is absolutely totally straight and just wants to hang out with her best friend, who happens to be another lady. This is normal behavior and a normal biblical quote to use that has no other context.
GAL PALS
OK, I said I was going to a thread of receipts together on the guy who runs Kapow, in odder to explain why I personally would recommend not giving him your business at TFN.
Starting with the original post, revealing the guy loves sharing right wing fascist stuff on LinkedIn.
Alex Maw@xjmaw.bsky.social ⋅ 6m
Since you might think it's weird you got a like on this over a year after the fact, the director of Kapow just shared this on LinkedIn; i.imgur.com/hqQYWgO.png
Joe needs to get out more.
Joyce’s pheromones intoxicate everyone around her.
So, she’s like Poison Ivy?
So that’s why Billie is drunk all the time, so much for my Billie/Ruth and welcome aboard Billie/Joyce.
Only less seductive but twice as corny.
I am just surprised Billy does not have this effect.
Contact high. You have to touch her. This theory should be good for the Billie/Ruth ship.
Joyce doesn’t understand Joe very much, does she?
Does anyone understand Joe very much?
Whoa, oh no Joe.
Yo Joe.
Watchu doin’ with that gun in your hand?
Shooting fish.
in a barrel?
Gonna shoot my old lady …
Caught her messin round with another man!
*guitar on fire*
If this college was in Australia, Joe would already be at legal drinking age since he’s at least 18.
The U.S. has the highest drinking age.
I guess the youngest big country has to have a maturity complex.
No, we just have a beer complex due to living on a Death World
The effect, as I’ve observed it, is that a lot of people *stop* drinking at 21.
Same with israel, that’s why the Roomies! beer story arc was always surreal to me – they would’ve been in legal drinking age in israel. Although if Roomies!\ DOA was REALLY in israel, they would’ve been in the IDF, so…
I think you’d find a good deal of support for moving Indiana to Australia . . .
“We’re succeed–sick-seed–cecee–REMOVING OURSELVES FROM THE UNION!”
If it was in Jamaica, he would be of drinking age since he is a living human. Yeah, no laws at all concerning age as of the late 90s. Was rather surreal to see how much was purchased by a group of teenagers.
What? Danny/Amazi-Girl only got 16 votes? Then again, it is up against the most popular pairing.
The way I see it, Joe has already won because we know that he has already managed to get his bone on.
I figured Mike/Your Mom has won already since that was clearly going on since before the start of the strip. Possibly even before Mike was born. Mike/Your Mom is that much of a multiversal constant.
That quiz was rendered meaningless by the fact that Walky/McNuggets have already being ‘white-sauced’.
Hehehehe…..”white sauce”
I totally would’ve voted for Ethan/Joyce if it was there.
+1 Leading to complications, because Joyce will certainly want to legitimize boning after the fact by getting married (or at least engaged) right away.
The comics are blurring together in my brain. My first thought was “Huh, Titanic musta driven him to drink”.
Or the Dover boys.
Confound them!
A roundabout? I’LL STEAL IT! NO ONE WILL EVER KNOW!
I HATE TOM!
I HATE DICK!
I HATE LARRY!!
These ponies drive me to drink! No one must ever know…
Careful, all caps might imply that you doth protest too much…
Man I hate the reply placement on this thread.
I’m expecting for Joe to say “Yes, Mom”
Joyce knows Billie. How can she be surprised at this?
Billie is a lost cause. Joe’s a lost cause in a different way. She didn’t think they’d have something in common.
How do you know he didn’t drive to Mexico for the day and drive back? HUH!?
Joe has a car?
Correction. Joe has an ULTRA car.
Wrong universe.
But given Shortpacked at the moment, it’ll only be a little while.
More realistic a venture from there would be Canada, but OK. Mexico.
I’m confused…. why is Joyce so surprised Joe was drinking? She didn’t seem too surprised people were drinking when she went to that party.
She didn’t know they were UNDER AGE.
Why wouldn’t she know, she is the same age as the rest of the cast…right?
Yes, because they are all freshmen, right?
Except for the RAs… and Sarah and her frenemies… and anyone that’s not a freshman.
When I lived in the same philosophical world as Joyce, I was shocked at underage drinking, as well as underage smoking.
Sometimes, Joyce makes me want to sin more.
I know. People like Joyce sort off give religion a bad name.
While Bon Jovi is btter known for giving love a bad name.
Honestly if I knew her I probably would, I hate that holier-than-thou attitude with a passion.
But she’s adorable. And honestly, Joe looks older…so I’m a bit surprised that he’s not 21.
Is there a correct way to deliver that “are”? Because I keep reading it in a breathy porno-actress voice and hitting the consonants too hard, like as soon as she’s done saying it she’ll go “And you need to be punished.”
That’s not Joyce. Not yet.
Yes that is correct. However, as a 21st century English speaker, especially in American comics, It is rare to see “you are” rather than “You’re” and it’s also rare for someone to phrase it like that, unless they are putting emphesis on either “you” or “are”.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Joe’s punchline, but honestly, Joyce not using contractions is the funniest part of the strip to me. I find it utterly hilarious.
So she’s channeling Data from TNG?
Nope, more like all those 50’s shorts on the evils of hankypanky, smoking and the dope ….. dang it dope used to only refer to the epoxy used in preparing the cloth for aircraft but some idiot started sniffing the stuff and now look what its done to the language…..
Dorothy looks like she has prosthetic arms.
Which raises the question of what family member she tried to raise from the dead.
Or if Dorothy’s a cyborg.
Or if she is a mannequin come to life.
Nah, she’s a Discworld Igor. Those arms are hand-me-downs.
Good timing for this strip. Just a few days ago, Willis commented on Roomies! about first realizing what good foils Joyce and Joe were.
No one’s made a terrible “under age/dumbing of age” joke…I guess everyone realized it was not clever except for me.
What, like Dumbing of Under Age? Yeah, it is dumb even for me, the knight of unfunny jokes.
I’m shocked, SHOCKED (!) to find that underage drinking occurs at college! How much else, out of everything what I’ve been told all my life, is wrong? Is the earth not 6000 years old? Do babies not come from storks? Does God play dice with the universe?
I’VE BEEN LIVING A LIE!!!
In answer to your questions:
1. 62%, give or take.
Ah, I remember when I was shocked and appalled to find out that a few of my classmates had tried smoking and drinking.
It was in middle school.
I remember being shocked at age 10 to see 13 year old girls smoking in public.
Joyce is Queen of the drunks, and this makes Joe her subject
I was totally like that when I was a frosh in college.
That stubble.
*Dat*
If you look at panel 2 long enough you can imagine that you’re in a crazy inverted universe where Walky is getting more action than Joe.
One would think that Joyce wouldn’t be all that shocked by the things that Joe gets into by now. I mean, he’s already got a sex tape with a politician’s relative out on the internet. A little drinking doesn’t really feel that shocking in comparison.
