As the polycule centered on Joyce, Dorothy, and Joe grows to encompass the entire university, Daisy becomes the last addition to what future generations of historians refer to as the Charles Walkerton Memorial Fuckpile.
I’m pretty sure as the editor of the paper, Daisey has the power to put in a personal ad…
“Blonde news editor seeks smoochable lady available for smooching. Must be a girl willing to kiss a girl. Specifically willing to kiss a blonde news editor. If selected for this position, you will be compensated for your smooches with smooches.”
Anyway, personally I ship the oft-misspelled Jocelyne with either Alice (not sure why, just think they’d work well together) or — if we don’t get him in the hoped-for polycule with DoJoJo — Walky (purely to annoy Joyce; imagine how she’d feel about someone who looks so much like her being in a relationship with an annoying human-shaped pile of sarcasm and McNuggets).
…though I’m still interested in the Alice+Jennifer ship, and am not sure they’d work with Jocelyne as a throuple; ordinarily, messy poly would be a feature, but neither Alice nor Jocelyne seem established enough as characters to make that work right. Maybe if we get to know them better first?
…ok, one more reply and I’ll shut up (at least for now): I still want Daisy to find someone.
Not sure who, though… Maybe she and Ruth could give it another try? I think it could work, at least as a short-term thing, as long as they don’t stray too far from the bathroom.
if they’re just into girls for the good smells and the soft boobs, then yea pre-op/non-op shouldn’t be an issue and taking issue with that would be transphobic
but hey, if a fellow sappho is weirded out by girldick regardless and/or really wants to be served conga, I ain’t faulting her for that. I get it, I’m kinda weirded out by the one attached to my body and would rather be able to serve, so we’d have that in common
I’m okay with trusting her, it’s the author I won’t trust
what if I get reincarnated into their fiction at some point? I might be similarly obstructed, and that just wouldn’t feel right
But also they might now be in physical danger from Joyce’s Jesus-crazy mother and church, even more than before, and letting Daisy learn this valuable lesson is worth something. They might save other people who have very good reasons to be closeted.
Maybe they thought she would take the photo off the on-line version at least.
Yeah little weird that they’re not asking for the photo to be retracted from the digital edition. But that might not be helpful either, especially if it’s gotten sent out to the mailing list.
Yeah, they’d only end of Streisand-ing themselves. Heck, even taking the one stack of newspapers is gonna cause a buzz about what the big deal is, censoring a whole online paper? Everyone would need to know why.
Right. Anyone who questioned what they were thinking got told it was a crisis that needed to be addressed right away and that’s why Joyce couldn’t spare a moment to tell Joe why she was running off or let Dorothy finish telling Walky at her own pace, but other than hiding the local copies so Becky might not see them, they haven’t actually done anything that might even vaguely address the crisis. They didn’t even ask Daisy about retracting the photo.
They just came here to complain. Which is fine, they’re justified, but it isn’t a crisis.
Yep, there’s a redhead at school we haven’t seen in a while and I’m pretty sure it’s because she already knows and they’re trying to avoid talking to her about it and either telling her or finding out she knows.
To use Walky parlance, this is Ross running around following the trail of people who could tell Rachel rather than………. talking to her first.
Jesus fucking Christ, they’ve been awake for maybe one hour at this point. Y’all are the most impatient, spoiled motherfucking children I’ve ever seen in a fandom. “Waaah, the characters aren’t doing the exact unspecified thing I want them to be doing, waaaaah” every goddamn strip, get a fucking grip.
That’s right, they shouldn’t be doing the unspecified things those impatient spoiled children want them to be doing. They should be doing the specific things I want them to be doing.
What’s that? Well, there’s a topic that Joyce might consider bringing up with Dorothy.
Joyce and Dorothy should just putter around the campus all day and not talk to anyone else in the cast, and then have a nice meal at a Mexican restaurant without any further discussion between themselves about boyfriends, Joyce’s bigot family, or especially Becky.
We NEED to know Joyce’s opinion on Baja Midnight. We NEED to. If Joyce doesn’t talk about Baja Midnight next strip it will be a betrayal of—fuck, hold on, let me get my notes—
-Every activist principle ever written down
-Socratic ethics
-Regular ethics
-Leslie, somehow
-Jesus Yeshua Christ His Fucking Schrödinger-Ass Self
-Atheism
-the entire comic strip’s beautiful plot which is now in shambles due to Willis’ stupid boner for these two
-the Vaygr Prophecies
-Yog-Sothoth, the Key and the Gate
To be momentarily serious there’s this disconnect between the three main discussion sites of this comic where like, the Patreon is chill, the subreddit is full of 4chan/8chan shitburglar idiot exiles and best avoided, and then here we’re in this mid state between chill and shitburglars where we’re not all our worst selves but we’re never our best (me included) and jokes 90% die and shrivel like raisins in favor of finding something to get really fucking mad about, constantly, all the time.
It’ll be a cold day in piss before I hell on with the two of these lesbioid fucks and without them at there’s nothing at the bottom to catch them so I hope daisy brought a fucking bucket because there’s tears in there sammy there tears for you and there’s tears for joyce and there’s another also bucket for tears with its back for Becky’s stupid opinion y’all are fucking addicted to Becky always Becky Becky Becky welcome home from the goddamn protest now report to the designated Becky so you can receive your Becky stamp for the evening like do people even know what they want Becky to Becky or is Becky the Becky that Becky their Becky please moses without his damn sandals walking up and down the parted sea like he rents the place can we just..!..m..!!
Inject the Becky inside of the Dorothy and the Joyce and within shall be contained all that which is opinions for Becky has many boyfriend related opinions and thoughts and diverse are they which reside within her Becky shaped head which contains further Becky until the time has been resolved and the recipe for the Abeckalypse has hath been followed to the B which stands for Becky.
Me going: OK so you fell asleep on the couch, you gotta do these 2 things (caring for animals), then you can go to bed. How hard can it be? Just 2 simple tasks that are important, and you are freee… Waaaa, tell me to do the tasks, mummy…
The only ethic issue is making the cover about bisexuals kissing instead of whatever the protesters wanted it to be about. You don’t put on a performance where you’re quoting lesbian weddings and striding through tear gas to have inappropriately timed make outs with your bestie at the war protest.
I can only speculate but, by being part of the University, the paper might be forbidden from making clear political statements (especially since the campus has also made its stance on the war). They can report on other stuff happening adjacent to it, but they might not be able to outright take a stance on the war itself.
“Local lesbian community in shambles over protest kiss, some calling it a bigger war crime then the repeated drone bombings of Bulermia, others calling the kiss “Mid at Best” and “not even that hot.””
“Ruutech Scion Carla Ruutech goes on record saying the kiss prank at last weeks War Protest, which saw student numbers in the 100’s forced to flee because of experimental tear gas use by Indiana State Police was “Totes lame. It didn’t even have a pie.””
In Joyce’s defense, she wasn’t quoting it because it is used in lesbian weddings. She’s quoting it because she used to be Christian and she felt an attachment to the verse. Is the verse used in lesbian weddings? Yes but I don’t think that factors into why Joyce chose to say it, anymore than it did when she’d write it onto her lunch bags for Dorothy. She was declaring her feelings for Dorothy but wasn’t proposing marriage or anything so I can’t hold that against Joyce as being, like… a ‘planned’ aspect of her declaration, you know?
To be fair, it could have been anything and the point still stands. She could have sang Heffalumps and Woozles and it would have had the same disruptions to the protest.
Is the Book of Ruth big in Christian circles? I thought they didn’t go in on Jewish texts. (Not to mention the very different attitudes on converting religions demonstrated, compared to Christianity.)
I wouldn’t say it was big in the circles I was in, but there were other aspects of the Old Testament that were taught heavily when I was a child in sunday school. Like Noah, Moses, the whole garden of Eden stuff, Abraham and Isaac… Joesph and his coat. They do go in on them but I’d say the main thing is they don’t talk about the texts being Jewish in origin. Like, I didn’t find out until I was an adult that the old testament came from the hebrew bible.
I actually had to look it up just to confirm for myself so I didn’t misuse any words or names, but apparently the Old Testament primarily has the 24 books of Tanakh in it. I don’t personally remember learning about the Book of Ruth myself, but that’s because I was a pretty shitty Christian and I was very irregular with my attendance to church lmao. I think it gets complicated too because you have different versions of the bible, like I know the ‘King James’ version is the main translation I was told to read. I think it isn’t entirely a one to one similarity, but there’s still a lot in there that’s the same and they just… really don’t talk about that material coming from Jewish faith.
Huh! I never knew that. I always hear people repeating that the Old Testament is equivalent to the Torah, but in retrospect that was probably a misconception on their parts about what’s actually in the Torah.
That still leaves the other surprising detail, though: in Judaic circles (or at least the ones I’m familiar with), the famous part of the Book of Ruth that everyone knows is when Ruth wants to convert to Judaism, and she’s discouraged from doing so by listing off all the challenges and hardships that being a practicing Jew consists of; even being warned of these, she insists on converting anyway. Which is so opposite from how I understood Christian missionaries and conversions worked that I’m shocked that Ruth would be considered relevant material Christian circle instead of something irrelevant to them.
I actually nearly made that very same mistake (saying the old testament is basically the Torah), and I’ll admit that as a white person from the South who was raised Christian, that is DEFINITELY because I actually never knew what all was in the Torah until I googled it tonight just before commenting!
I think Christians using Torah to mean Tanakh is extremely common, more often using Pentateuch to refer to the actual 5 books of the Torah.
Also worth noting that the Catholic Bible contains a couple books in the Old Testament that both modern Rabbinic Judaism and Protestants consider apocrypha
Ezekiel and Isaiah are somewhat popular in Christian circles, too, as is Daniel (apocryphal editions of which include bits not regularly in the Christian bible, like Susannah and the Elders), and Psalms and Proverbs, too, of course. Ecclesiastes isn’t popular with anyone, but is oddly important.
It was pretty big in the churches I went to. From memory they mostly liked to use it to reinforce patriarchal gender norms & loyalty to family, as a metaphor for Jesus, and an example of how god looks out for even the poors.
A lot of this is pretty standard fare for evangelicals but maybe more surprising if you’ve actually read the text without that lens
Depends on the circles — it’s a fairly common wedding reading, in some places (despite the sapphic implications). It’s expressly NOT a Catholic option, though, because they have a menu of nine old-testament readings you have to choose from.
The Book of Ruth is a megillot, it isn’t part of the Torah. It IS part of the Talmud, but I hadn’t thought that Christians paid attention to the non-Torah portions of that.
As a Christian, I’d put it like this: The Old Testament/Tanakh has some relevancy within Christianity, but it isn’t necessarily central to the ethics. As I was taught (but I’m from a very liberal church so it might not be true for everyone) the main ethical guide we get is the actions/teachings of Jesus, but the Old Testament can contain positive examples. It can however be ignored when it contradicts the New Testament.
I was never taught about the book of Ruth by the church, but it was taught in my school’s religion studies as an interesting story. And I think the “interesting story” aspect is probably the one that keeps these texts getting read in Christian circles.
oh, no, yeah, they’re really into certain Ne’vi’im. Yeshayahu (Isaiah), the whole mistranslation of “the young woman is pregnant and will name her son Emmanuel” and all that. Ruth gets particular attention because of her being the ancestor of King David, and Jesus is (allegedly) from the Davidic line.
Yeah, it’s kinda the other way around — Christians really tend to love their books of prophets and judges and kings and stuff.
For dramatic readings and “get people to read the Bible, the stories are great”, mind you, often without absorbing a single thing Isaiah or Amos say when it comes down to actually picking how to behave.
I’m all for normalizing bisexuality, but… Daisy kinda blew any plausible deniability that she didn’t recognize them, or is labelling strangers she doesn’t know for the sake of a punchline. Either way, that alone wasn’t very cash money of her.
Honestly, I don’t see where people are coming from on this one. Daisy did nothing wrong here. She reported on a thing two people did in public at an event which it is her job to cover. There’s really nothing unethical about it. Would it have been better for Dorothy and Joyce if that didn’t make the paper? Sure, but as Daisy pointed out, they should have picked a better time and place to start making out if they didn’t want people to notice. This isn’t some candid photo taken of two people in private, this was an extremely public display in the middle of an event which they knew was receiving media coverage. They have nobody to blame but themselves.
Honestly, I feel like it’s pretty gross to argue that they were asking to be outed by virtue of being in a public place. It just feels like someone along the line, between snapping the picture, sending it to the paper, writing the article, and putting it all together really should have considered “hm, wait a minute, could this be outting two individuals? Is making these two the face of the protest because they were kissing in a public place a good decision?”.
You do realize that a lot of same sex couples do actually have to contend with the fact that they cannot show affection in public sometimes, yes? And that that’s pretty fucked up and unfair? That straight couples can borderline grind up on each other in public just fine but if two men hold hands or god forbid, share a kiss, they run the risk of the wrong person seeing that and deciding to beat the shit out of them? And then people would argue they have nobody to blame but themselves for publicly displaying their affection. Just, you know, keep that in mind as for why some people might get a bit upset about this.
The buck stops with Daisy, ultimately, and this debate on what does and doesn’t count as outing missed the forest for the trees: it was not appropriate to run that image for this story in the first place.
People are holding Daisy accountable for it but a lot of people were going “oh man they’re gonna be on the news aren’t they” during the protest itself.
Putting them front and centre wasn’t the ideal thing, but those two were gonna be on the news on some level just by being there and then making out.
Indeed. Even if you took photos at a public event, it’s part of your job as a journalist to filter them. Nobody forced Daisy to choose that one, plus meme-ify it.
(Granted, student journalists aren’t really equipped to cover this many layers of fucked up shit properly.)
The one choice of Daisy’s I might’ve considered ethical here was to not use a pic of Amazigirl. After this conversation, I suspect that was only because Daisy couldn’t get a good one in the chaos.
Everything about the second half of your comment was a disgusting straw man argument that I do not have the words to adequately express my contempt for.
I will not interact with you further.
It isn’t a strawman argument to talk about something that happens in reality and point out that perhaps that is why people are sensitive to the outing of queer people as well as arguments regarding “well if they didn’t want blank to happen then they shouldn’t have been in public displaying their affection”. Regardless, have a good rest of your night. You said you didn’t understand where people were coming from, so I provided my answer. I didn’t intend any ill will and will merely go about my own night.
I mean, they weren’t just in public, they were at an extremely high profile public demonstration that had been getting active press coverage for days. Being visible is kind of the point of a public demonstration like that, it’s a reasonable assumption that people there are aware that they are likely being recorded.
Like, the entire reason they were there in the first place was to warn Jocelyne that recognizable photos of her were being posted online!
It was a foolish thing done on the spur of the moment, in the heat of passion, and they shouldn’t be surprised they were noticed, at least in retrospect.
Doesn’t change the fact that Daisy could have taken the time to attempt to figure out who they were (something that shouldn’t have been that hard considering both of them have contributed to the newspaper on multiple occasions), then at least sent them a text to ask if they were ok with being on the front page.
Also, there’s the whole thing about how, unless the article focuses a lot more on the protest itself than the photo does, it’s kinda disregarding the most important part of the event to instead focus on something that really should be regarded as fairly routine. Two people kissing? So what? It happens.
Disgusting straw man argument? What Doopyboop explained is a real thing and there is nothing disgusting about that. So is it a strawman argument? Presumably the use of straw man is to suggest that this is not an argument that relates to the Dorothy/Joyce situation. So, from their point of view they were kissing because of love and passion, not as a publicity stunt. Now they have realised that it may put them in some danger. This is entirely because they are the same sex, not for any other reason. So two people of different sexes could have done this without endangering themselves.
Hmmm, seems entirely relevant to me. Not sure why it engenders contempt, but since Armadillo doesn’t have the words, I guess we will never know.
Meanwhile, I’m still puzzled by ‘disgusting’. Disgusting straw? Disgusting man? Disgusting argument?
personally I think its very disgusting that queers really irl can’t be open without potentially getting violenced over it by small brained cowards who can’t handle knowing gay people exist
maybe if the bigots don’t wanna be called disgusting they should stop being repulsive freaks who beat up and scream at and murder people just for being queer how about that basket of eggs dànïel
There is nothing ‘disgusting’ about Doopyboop’s explanation. Obviously there is everthing disgusting about a situation in which gay/bi people cannot express affection openly.
This is a really weird reply and nothing you’ve said since justifies or clarifies it. Why do you think that it’s a “disgusting strawman” to state that if same-sex couples are outed publicly without their consent they run the risk of homophobic violence, exactly, Armadillo? Please speak up.
I can understand Dorothy and Joyce’s lack of awareness is what ultimately resulted in getting their kiss photographed but I also feel like the argument “It’s your fault you got exploited.” coming from the person doing the exploitation is a line of crap. Ethics and responsibility can be practiced on both sides. Joyce and Dorothy didn’t have to kiss in public and Daisy didn’t have to run the photo.
I see where you’re coming from, but I feel like a lot of this take is based on insider information that you and I have which no journalism practice could conceivably acquire. Because your assessment relies on a very particular question to be asked that would likely not occur to anyone: “Why would these two people making out in the middle of this extremely public event in an extremely visible location not want people to know that they were kissing?”
Frankly speaking, the person taking the photo had every reason to believe they were doing it with the intention of being seen by as many people as possible, especially since queer make-outs as an act of protest are not a new thing. Sure, we know that they were just being idiots and didn’t want people to know about it at all, but why would anyone think that might be the case when literally everything about their actions indicated otherwise? From an objective viewpoint, taken without all the background information we know about Dorothy and Joyce, there is no reason to think that this relationship was a secret. There is, in fact, negative reason to think they wanted to keep it a secret.
So yeah, saying they were exploited by Daisy and whoever was there to snap the photo isn’t inaccurate, but it is placing a lot of blame on them that is very much misplaced. Because at the end of the day Joyce and Dorothy were acting extremely stupid and yes, brought this upon themselves by not considering the potential consequences of what they were doing.
Well that makes your thoughts a whole bunch clearer that calling what Doopyboop said a “disgusting straw man argument” An argument can be perfectly valid in itself, but you can think it doesn’t apply in this case, without being so challenging!
I don’t actually think this does make your thoughts clearer and I want to hear an excuse for your weird “disgusting strawman” remark. At least make an attempt.
Again, I’ll argue it’s not about ethics; it’s about news judgement. You’ve got student protesters, Ga-I mean Bulmaria, violent cops, violent cops being pummeled by an actual superhero. Two girls kissing? Meh.
i see we are still litigating the ick factors here, and we defineately have ick cause we know what can happen to non hetronormative folks in public. this is true. and as i said yesterday (and i think the day before) the ethics here come down to (in canada at least when discussing this) “resonable expectation of privacy” and there is none at a public protest, now snapping them coming out of a portapotty would be a for example as there can be a resonable expectation that your toilet time isnt going to be photopgraphed (regardless of your purpose in the portajohn, ew!)
again i wonder how much of this is a generational thing, as i was taught in school to not expect any action i take in a public place to private. sure we as an audience know and understand the nuances of why from a personal safety view this is icky. from a editorial/publishers view, there is nothing wrong, especially from a getting eyes on your paper aspect, you lead with the photo that will get the most people to pick up the paper, use humour and puns regarding the photo, then fill the interior with all the heavy truth of the protest and the events therein. like said we have ick from the personal safety aspect for jorothy, but daisy is not wrong that they should have picked a better place to affirm their feelings, and should have been consious of what they were risking in that moment (and unfortunately their distorted emotional states due to trauma and ya know they be 18, is not an excuse that creates a sheild of a reasonable expectation of privacy). now this is a distinctly canadian veiw and xplaination i guess due to how the laws are up here and how we are taught about public behavior up here, but from my (admittedly mainly popculture based) knowledge, there are very few jursdictions that have laws protecting people from being recorded/photographed in public settings, and those that do have exceptions for attending public events such as protests and sporting events.
again we got 2 thing true here joyrothy can feel ick for being outed against there will, but daisy didnt really do anything wrong legally, and followed common journalistic practices. as well given the environment of the kiss has a reasonable expectation that the girls were aware of what doing what they did where they did could result in this. and hopefully i stop giving into my urges to prvide context from a canadians view
This all seems pretty correct as an American also, though outside of a public event I wish photographing and filming people in public were more frowned on. From an outside perspective there’s not really any reason to assume people a) refusing to leave a protest when in general people are gathering up their shit and going and b) making out at said protest even though the cops are coming down on them with tear gas are trying to hide anything. Like that’s the kind of thing I for one would assume people were doing on purpose. This is unfortunate for our heroes, but very reasonable for Daisy.
In general I think Daisy is good people and this is just the unfortunate result of a bunch of bad decisions happening all at once. It is unfortunate that it may create literal physical danger for Joyce and co but that was not at all a predictable feature of the situation from the outside.
I think you are focusing too much on the privacy thing (that and along the rambling make it difficult to follow what you are talking about) where the point is more ttat the cover for the protest news should had been about the propest not the two girls kissing. Ignore the “ick” (why do you call it that?) and just focus and how weird the priorities of it is.
of you go bacl over the comments fromwhen we first saw the front page i am not the first to use ick factor when describing daisy’s decisions and i have just kept using it. not arguing that a cover more focused on the intent and substance of the protest would have been a better decision morally, just that jorothy do not really have a legal leg to stand on, and should have been aware regarding the recordability of actions in public. i was alos giving my take on why the photo was chosen (as many others have pointed out people making out at protests often end up being pictured for the articles about said protest regardless of the protest subject). like j.jonah.jameson would have lead with it if there were no spidey pics to use, and i could see the same being said for many an editor out there, not that it was the right move morally or the best move regarding the protest (beyond moving more papers, thus generating more eyeballs on the coverage and reaction to said protest)
and yeah, if it isnt obvious i do not use a spell check and my typing ability is poor so please read with understanding that anything i may say that sound weird or like i am attacking or insulting anyone or anything it is 99% iunintentional
i feel like once daisy makes it into the all-encompassing DoA cast polycule that we all know is coming, she’s going to shag someone, literally anyone with a vagina, exactly once, experience exactly one orgasm, and then be completely chill and continent forevermore
Hey this is the earliest I’ve ever been! Also I feel like Daisy’s dialogue in the last panel should be punctuated by her indignantly kicking something, perhaps a trash can or table of some sort
Ok, but Daisy, what about-No wait, the fact that you ignored the actual news and focused on the most clickbaity thing you could will probably guarantee you great jobs in the future
I don’t remember that? Do you recall roughly when that was (I don’t want you to go hunting through the achieves on my behalf – you have a life to live)?
other than an existing chara idk if willis would add a new chara just for daisy but at this piont idk if she desserves it
unless she like, straight up goes to pay a prostitute, which idk if legal in their state but no shame if she’s respectful about it. imagine if they were in JP (cultural stuff aside the concept of rental bfs/gfs and hostesses are a thing so she’d def at least get some flirting even if she doesn’t get a kiss)
Is stress pooping holding YOU back from a successful, fulfilling lesbian relationship?
Then ask your doctor about Pūparenox (omeplasmium metasepiate)!
Pūparenox is a twice daily suppository medication. In clinical studies, 7 out of 10 participants reported Pūparenox resulted in a drastic decrease in stress defecation*!
Finally, a life where you don’t interrupt your hot date with another woman to hit the toilet in horrifying ways is within reach. Ask your doctor if it’s right for you.
Before starting Pūparenox, talk to your doctor, your GI specialist, your local health board, and a priest. Do not take Pūparenox if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant at any time, bisexual, or if you have consumed shellfish in the last five years. Do not apply Pūparenox after midnight**. Side effects may include drowsiness, fatigue, muscle pains, bone spurs, vomiting, hemolysis, endometriosis, teratogenic growths, and RONS*** disorder. If at any point your tissues turn a blackish purple color and begin to lose coherency, stop taking Pūparenox and call your doctor**** right away.
If you cannot afford your medication, Rutten Pharmaceuticals may be able to help.
*: Out of these 7, 4 expressed they no longer needed or desired to defecate; 3 reported that their feces had become small and pellet-like, akin to a rabbits. We cannot disclose what happened to the final 3 participants, but they are in a better place now, and additionally they have stopped smoking.
**: We mean it.
***: Rapid-Onset Shoggothification
****: Medical personnel who receive this call should contact 911, then the Department of Defense to inform them of an ONYX FIFTEEN situation
I absolutely love that Daisy has a habit of sticking her pencil in her mouth. It is fun when characters get these little quirks that authors rarely think to include, but make them feel very human.
However, I loath that rather than chewing the sides, she sticks an end of pencil in her mouth. I makes almost gag thinking about the pointy bit pointing directly at the uvula or the eraser shedding carbonized rubber into the mouth. I’m not really complaining – I know its not a big deal and a me problem, but it just freaks me out for some reason.
Honestly Daisy should just register for a hookup app at this point, I doubt she even cares for the emotional side of things as much as she just violently craves another woman’s proximity and or touch
In hindsight, kind of cosmically ironic that the only reason Joyce & Dot got forcefully outed in the paper was because Joyce was afraid about her sister being forcefully outed to her father online
i think i may need another break from this place, a longer one
oh my got the caucacity in the comments section ive been seeing lately is just fucking EW
the fucking point of the protest in the first place is to raise awareness about a genocide — a genocide against ARABS
im just sick and tired of commenters saying “oh unless the genocide protest story has white girls kissing, misguided white people aren’t gonna pay attention to it”
to dismiss this marginalization of the real issue as an acceptable biproduct of Business Getting Done™ is still racism, period
you can be for Dorothy X Joyce and still acknowledge that Daisy made a mistake, and no amount of mental gymnastics or flagrant misuse of pro-queer talking points changes this (-_-)
It is a little disappointing that we came out all this way to yell at Daisy but neither Dorothy nor Joyce has thought to point out that it’s wildly inappropriate to use that image to cover a protest about the university’s investments in weapons and technology firms involved in an overseas conflict – genocide, in other words. There’s a lot of shit Daisy should be catching right now but isn’t.
yeah, but of course what do we expect? it’s white girls talkin to another white girl about representation of a race-related issue for which the stakes for either of them are ultimately about whoever gets paid attention to, so there’s inevitably an echo chamber going on here
still holding out for the possibility that Asma or someone else who’s actually affected by the genocide overseas let Daisy know why her decision wasn’t really ethical :(
I apologize if I added to that impression; I was just trying to join an interesting discussion and didn’t intend to downplay the problems with the depiction.
I really should try to choose my words better… or, considering how short I am on spoons lately, maybe just stop commenting on controversial stuff. That latter might be best.
I feel like the outing of two bi women with the newspaper picture is kinda less bad than the fact that Daisy chose to make the picture for a news story about anti-genocide protests and police brutality a picture of two women kissing.
Both the outing and using these two as a face for the protest they weren’t even a part of can be bad things and each lead to the same conclusion of “this picture shouldn’t have been printed”.
maybe of daisy wanted to kiss a woman maybe she should maybe stop acting like a goddamn incel maybe and talk to a goddamn lesbian. The fucking campus is crawling with them it would not be difficult
considering daisy was willing to print a photo of dorothy and joyce kissing surprised shed oesn’t have an article every run that’s like “btw ladiesi ‘m single please contact me” lol
She also insisted that the new “superhero” was “Nightgirl” despite being corrected repeatedly. I figure she just assumes every damp spot is girl drool, and just happened to be right that once.
Publishing in first page a gay kiss, instead publishing a protest against Bulmerian genocide, with real arrests, is definitely a real liberal move.
Art imitating life.
yeah, regardless of Daisy’s intentions, she’s still white and whether or not she knows it, her decision marginalizes people of color who are affected by what the protest was even supposed to be about in the first place
There’s a weird game you gotta play here in terms of figuring out how to get people to actually read the article and, if you’re not an asshole, how to get them to receive it well. I’m genuinely not sure how I feel about this kind of game. When you’re trying to prevent deaths the best thing for you to be is effective, and if clickbaiting it like this results in more people reading and actually caring about a genocide than would if they put photos of riot cops out front it might be a good move, but I don’t have data in front of me about how different things influence public opinion. And if it doesn’t make a difference one way or another, I’ll agree that this is a pretty bad thing to lead with. The headline is cute as a comic reader but in real life would be in pretty poor taste also.
Okay, something to consider: daisy might be bullshitting them a little:
The title say “Kiss The Bomb Goodbi”
Not “Goodbye”, but “Goodbi”. “Good BI”!
Beyond being a terrible pun, the only way it make sense is if Daisy was actually aware that at least one of the kisser was BI-sexual.
And she could only knew that if she knew at least one of the kisser. So she knew it was Dorothy.
Today I went to the beach. While there I got swept off my feet by a wave, my foot slammed into my friend’s swim sandal and the resulting stubbing of the toe actually partially ripped my toe nail off. I am now living Joyce’s experience here as I await the final shedding…
Someday, Daisy. Someday…
**holds up hand**
I volunteer as tribute.
I also volunteer Rose as tribute.
Sure, why not?
you know what fuck it, I second this motion XD
yeah, let’s ALL vote for Rose! ~<3
Rose, we’re rooting for ya. I was going to volunteer myself, but I’m volunteering you as well. This day is yours.
There’s a Rose in Billifer’s wing, isn’t there? Willis has the chance to do something magical for us
If she’s “Rose by Any other Name”, shouldn’t we be calling her anything BUT Rose?
Sometimes i wonder how that scene would have gone if the whole crowd all went Spartacus in that moment.
Probably about as well as it went for the Spartacii
girl is dying of thirst, watching the rest of the college drowning.
how it is sometimes 😔
I have no girlfriend and I must scream
the day daisy gets kissed is the very last strip of this comic *apollo*
As the polycule centered on Joyce, Dorothy, and Joe grows to encompass the entire university, Daisy becomes the last addition to what future generations of historians refer to as the Charles Walkerton Memorial Fuckpile.
I don’t know why but, Memorial Fuckpile has me giggling. thank you
DW has said on social media that Daisy “getting some” would be the end of the comic.
Sal has the option but chooses not to use it.
She kissed marcie at least once I think, during the make-malaya-jealous plan
She bailed prior to lip contact. https://www.dumbingofage.com/2019/comic/book-9-comic/04-vote-for-robin/intended/
ah geez, I wasn’t ready for the atmosphere of doomed yuri that clicking that link brought me
Nah she couldn’t commit to their game of gay chicken
Wait til Daisy starts reading the parts where Julia Gray bangs both her boyfriend AND girlfriend!
Julia and Future President Doris’ relationship is gonna take a very interesting direction.
Get on fucking Daisy!
*Tinder
No, no, I liked your first one 😂
agreed, 1st much better! i posit………Daisylyn!
Daisy and someone female identifying, but I’m not sure if a pre-op transwoman will be accepted.
You think Daisy might be a transphobe?
Or she’s into vagina, as some folks are wont to be.
Or maybe averse to penises, for that matter.
I think it could work, at least as a short-term thing, as long as they don’t stray too far from the bathroom.
thanks deliverything, now I want another Joyce sibling in on the polycule so we can spoof powerpuff and call them DoJo JoJo
tho I guess with the current loadout, we can still work with something fun if we give them a bizarre adventure
if they’re just into girls for the good smells and the soft boobs, then yea pre-op/non-op shouldn’t be an issue and taking issue with that would be transphobic
but hey, if a fellow sappho is weirded out by girldick regardless and/or really wants to be served conga, I ain’t faulting her for that. I get it, I’m kinda weirded out by the one attached to my body and would rather be able to serve, so we’d have that in common
o7
I will do it. If only to hush her
Is “fucking” a verb or an adjective here?
Both!
Don’t trust anyone who can’t kiss girls because the narrative won’t allow it.
That’s the narrative’s fault, not hers.
She’s just written that way.
I’m okay with trusting her, it’s the author I won’t trust
what if I get reincarnated into their fiction at some point? I might be similarly obstructed, and that just wouldn’t feel right
Kiiiiinda feel like Joyce and Dorothy have more important things to be doing than complaining at the school newspaper
To understand their actions, you must understand they will do anything to avoid dealing with the real issues.
No point. Once it’s online it’s forever. Things get reposted and archived faster than anyone can possibly take them down.
I was really expecting that to be the reason they were going to Daisy.
Honestly, I thought they’d go for Becky, but they really are going to kick that can as far down the road as humanly possible.
i mean probs but that would require confronting their problems head on, and who wants to do that on their sunday morning?
Taco Bell it is.
We NEED to know Joyce’s opinion on Baja Midnight. We NEED to. If Joyce doesn’t talk about Baja Midnight next strip it will be a betrayal of—fuck, hold on, let me get my notes—
-Every activist principle ever written down
-Socratic ethics
-Regular ethics
-Leslie, somehow
-Jesus Yeshua Christ His Fucking Schrödinger-Ass Self
-Atheism
-the entire comic strip’s beautiful plot which is now in shambles due to Willis’ stupid boner for these two
-the Vaygr Prophecies
-Yog-Sothoth, the Key and the Gate
… there’s a baja midnight now?!
YES and it’s PURPLE
Fam, you good?
The scary part is that i almost was able ti follow that
other than going to becky and joyce’s dad too, it’s easier/need to get telilng off daisy outta the way as well
Title of my autobiography.
Me going: OK so you fell asleep on the couch, you gotta do these 2 things (caring for animals), then you can go to bed. How hard can it be? Just 2 simple tasks that are important, and you are freee… Waaaa, tell me to do the tasks, mummy…
um, no, you still need a talking to about journalism ethics Daisy, this isn’t over
Yes, she needs to cast aside her remaining ones if she’s going to succeed.
not sure if this is sarcasm or not,
either way, this is something i really not in the mood for joking about :(
The only ethic issue is making the cover about bisexuals kissing instead of whatever the protesters wanted it to be about. You don’t put on a performance where you’re quoting lesbian weddings and striding through tear gas to have inappropriately timed make outs with your bestie at the war protest.
It’s gouache.
I can only speculate but, by being part of the University, the paper might be forbidden from making clear political statements (especially since the campus has also made its stance on the war). They can report on other stuff happening adjacent to it, but they might not be able to outright take a stance on the war itself.
I want this to be a thing.
I’m pretty sure the cops hurling tear gas at the protestors was a far bigger disruption than anything Joyce was saying.
I was under the impression that the Old Testament was just the five Books of Moses, though. The Book of Ruth isn’t part of that, hence my surprise.
Quoting the Book of Ruth (not that Ruth, the one in the Torah/Old Testament). I don’t think Joyce has ever seen a lesbian wedding.
The Book of Ruth is a megillot, it isn’t part of the Torah. It IS part of the Talmud, but I hadn’t thought that Christians paid attention to the non-Torah portions of that.
Er, the Tanakh, rather, not the Talmud. There are too many two-syllable T-words in this friggin’ religion 😩
I mean, “gouache” is one way of putting it
it’s basically birthday balloons at a funeral, and Daisy chose to make those balloons the highlight of a story about a funeral
I’m all for normalizing bisexuality, but… Daisy kinda blew any plausible deniability that she didn’t recognize them, or is labelling strangers she doesn’t know for the sake of a punchline. Either way, that alone wasn’t very cash money of her.
“*assumption being made for the sake of the pun” is literally part of the title of the article, so. Yeah it’s the second one.
There’s a footnote explicitly saying it’s an assumption for the sake of the dumb pun.
… Is a lesbian making dumb bi puns cultural appropriation?
Honestly, I don’t see where people are coming from on this one. Daisy did nothing wrong here. She reported on a thing two people did in public at an event which it is her job to cover. There’s really nothing unethical about it. Would it have been better for Dorothy and Joyce if that didn’t make the paper? Sure, but as Daisy pointed out, they should have picked a better time and place to start making out if they didn’t want people to notice. This isn’t some candid photo taken of two people in private, this was an extremely public display in the middle of an event which they knew was receiving media coverage. They have nobody to blame but themselves.
Personal accountability is Joyce’s kryptonite in this story arc.
I’m getting that impression as well, yes.
Agreed completely.
Absoluckingfootly.
Clearer than
I don’t actually think this does make your thoughts clearer and I want to hear an excuse for your weird “disgusting strawman” remark.
Daisy had an opportunity to cover for Joyce & Dorothy’s mistake and did not recognize it or take it. That’s not really an ethical failure though.
It’s all about ethics in college journalism.
I’m old enough to get that reference.
ahhhhh that’s our daisy
i feel like once daisy makes it into the all-encompassing DoA cast polycule that we all know is coming, she’s going to shag someone, literally anyone with a vagina, exactly once, experience exactly one orgasm, and then be completely chill and continent forevermore
Not sure if “continent” here is a typo for content or a reference to the stress pooping
one of the many benefits of That One Orgasm That Rearranges Your Entire Life and Personality
Not sure I want to think about sexual continence and bowel continence in the same sentence… Oh wait…
Sexual continents? You mean like Australia?
Hey this is the earliest I’ve ever been! Also I feel like Daisy’s dialogue in the last panel should be punctuated by her indignantly kicking something, perhaps a trash can or table of some sort
spitting the pencil into the trashcan from 10ft!
Ok, but Daisy, what about-No wait, the fact that you ignored the actual news and focused on the most clickbaity thing you could will probably guarantee you great jobs in the future
C’mon, Sal, get to it!
Oh good I was really worried that we’d get through a scene with Daisy without her hilarious joke that everyone loves
Indeed, for a moment she was about to upgrade from “one-note joke character” status, which would certainly have been terrible for everyone involved.
Daisy is constantly on the cusp of ‘actual serious character’ but it always comes back to her core punchline.
Panel 3 Joyce: “That’s my girlfriend!”
“Queerbait-y”
One… singular sensation… 🗞
if Daisy doesn’t find that someone before she graduates, she’ll explode… get Jennifer!
Billie did try, to her credit
I don’t remember that? Do you recall roughly when that was (I don’t want you to go hunting through the achieves on my behalf – you have a life to live)?
She tried hooking Daisy up with Ruth. Ruth ended up going home with Jason after Daisy got the stress shits.
PS. It wasn’t because of the stress pooping.
The stress pooping could not have possibly helped
I am Joyce from this scene, except replace “a boy” with “Jason”.
It’s in the Hompk! chapter, but you can see it in the Daisy tag at the bottom of the page. (She doesn’t appear that much.)
Go. On. An. APP. Daisy. Jesus Christ, you run a college newspaper, you should have flex time, get a life.
My apologies if I sound snippy, its just the “WAH I’M SINGLE” bit has gotten old for Daisy in my opinion.
That does not necessarily mean she’ll land someone even for a meetup.
Girl got zero rizz. Girl got negative rizz. Not much else she can do.
My understanding of the dating app experience is that it ranks somewhere between ‘no thanks’ and ‘I would rather get a voluntary root canal’.
It is particularly bad for lesbians, as it happens
other than an existing chara idk if willis would add a new chara just for daisy but at this piont idk if she desserves it
unless she like, straight up goes to pay a prostitute, which idk if legal in their state but no shame if she’s respectful about it. imagine if they were in JP (cultural stuff aside the concept of rental bfs/gfs and hostesses are a thing so she’d def at least get some flirting even if she doesn’t get a kiss)
*sex worker
*applause*
I absolutely love that Daisy has a habit of sticking her pencil in her mouth. It is fun when characters get these little quirks that authors rarely think to include, but make them feel very human.
However, I loath that rather than chewing the sides, she sticks an end of pencil in her mouth. I makes almost gag thinking about the pointy bit pointing directly at the uvula or the eraser shedding carbonized rubber into the mouth. I’m not really complaining – I know its not a big deal and a me problem, but it just freaks me out for some reason.
It’s supposed to evoke the cigar J. Jonah Jameson is usually puffing, and that only really works if it’s an end.
Honestly Daisy should just register for a hookup app at this point, I doubt she even cares for the emotional side of things as much as she just violently craves another woman’s proximity and or touch
In hindsight, kind of cosmically ironic that the only reason Joyce & Dot got forcefully outed in the paper was because Joyce was afraid about her sister being forcefully outed to her father online
i think i may need another break from this place, a longer one
oh my got the caucacity in the comments section ive been seeing lately is just fucking EW
the fucking point of the protest in the first place is to raise awareness about a genocide — a genocide against ARABS
im just sick and tired of commenters saying “oh unless the genocide protest story has white girls kissing,
misguided whitepeople aren’t gonna pay attention to it”to dismiss this marginalization of the real issue as an acceptable biproduct of Business Getting Done™ is still racism, period
you can be for Dorothy X Joyce and still acknowledge that Daisy made a mistake, and no amount of mental gymnastics or flagrant misuse of pro-queer talking points changes this (-_-)
It is a little disappointing that we came out all this way to yell at Daisy but neither Dorothy nor Joyce has thought to point out that it’s wildly inappropriate to use that image to cover a protest about the university’s investments in weapons and technology firms involved in an overseas conflict – genocide, in other words. There’s a lot of shit Daisy should be catching right now but isn’t.
yeah, but of course what do we expect? it’s white girls talkin to another white girl about representation of a race-related issue for which the stakes for either of them are ultimately about whoever gets paid attention to, so there’s inevitably an echo chamber going on here
still holding out for the possibility that Asma or someone else who’s actually affected by the genocide overseas let Daisy know why her decision wasn’t really ethical :(
Your best bet is Raidah who’s initial response was “Okay, what the entire fuck is this?” even before she identified Joyce and Dorothy.
I apologize if I added to that impression; I was just trying to join an interesting discussion and didn’t intend to downplay the problems with the depiction.
I really should try to choose my words better… or, considering how short I am on spoons lately, maybe just stop commenting on controversial stuff. That latter might be best.
Daisy’s sole purpose in the comic is just to fail to get girls, and we salute her for that.
I fucking dont
It was supposed to be a running gag, but now it is barely a limping gag. The attempted date with Ruth was the lamest thing Willis has ever done.
Anyone else love the smile Joyce gives as the “Future President Doris” connection is mentioned?
I like to think Joyce herself is only just now connecting everything that hinted at her feelings for Dorothy.
I love it.
I think she connected it earlier, when Booster told her that they’ve read her comics in which “Dorothy” is her roommate.
Not without Wednesday White on hand, alt text.
Wednesday Burns-White?
Now there’s a deep cut. XD
Still won’t put Faz off though.
I feel like the outing of two bi women with the newspaper picture is kinda less bad than the fact that Daisy chose to make the picture for a news story about anti-genocide protests and police brutality a picture of two women kissing.
Both the outing and using these two as a face for the protest they weren’t even a part of can be bad things and each lead to the same conclusion of “this picture shouldn’t have been printed”.
and this is why daisy doesn’t deserve to getk isses from girls
Yeah, but Joyce/Dorothy aren’t going to be the ones to make that case.
GOD Daisy needs to get laid. And also she could at least offer to delete the photo from the digital edition.
She has her ship I guess.
Literally begging all the people coming here to post their 100th upset comment this week to maybe consider just taking a break from reading
Upvote upvote upvote
Agreed! Especially upset comments that are variations of the same complaint they’ve mmade for like a month, or a year 🤷
how many is this for you?
isildur_says_no.gif
D and J holding hands while they walk is super cute and I wasn’t expecting it OR expecting to be so moved by it
Just checked the cast page and saw some new additions to the recurring roster, which is neat.
I wonder if this means Jocelyne is going back to school? Alice is cool, but I was hoping Asma was included.
Panel 3 is so cute.
What was Daisy’s last name, again? Bell?
Daisy Canever-Banggegǐrlt.
Daisy Aeternatus Comprimius Ruditales, if you don’t go for the whole brevity thing.
Conrad, apparently.
no that’s zimmerman
Dumbing of Age Book 16: Literally Everyone Gets to Kiss Girls Except For Me!
Ivri Lider’s version of “I Kissed A Girl (and I liked it)” is a must-see for anyone annoyed by Katy Perry’s version.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skAMmX-D41Q
I see that this comic is going the Avalon route.
Sporadic?
i mean not to shame but if you’re the only one not getting kissed shouldn’t that make her reflect on herself as a person
No one has been kissed, right up to the point they have.
maybe of daisy wanted to kiss a woman maybe she should maybe stop acting like a goddamn incel maybe and talk to a goddamn lesbian. The fucking campus is crawling with them it would not be difficult
Still not over the fact that Daisy saw Walky’s shirt for half a second before clocking that it had girl drool on it.
Girl’s pent up sexdrive is giving her actual superpowers
considering daisy was willing to print a photo of dorothy and joyce kissing surprised shed oesn’t have an article every run that’s like “btw ladiesi ‘m single please contact me” lol
She also insisted that the new “superhero” was “Nightgirl” despite being corrected repeatedly. I figure she just assumes every damp spot is girl drool, and just happened to be right that once.
She had to poop
Yes! Yes she is!
Me too Daisy, me too.
fitting that she’s my current icon
The headline is cute as a comic reader but in real life would be in pretty poor taste also.
yeah even then
for it to get more attention doesn’t really justify the headline and photo being humor making light of this deadly serious issue affecting us 🙁
to excuse this as an acceptable cost of business getting done on our behalf is still a racist thing to do no matter which way ya slice it
Finally Daisy got pictures of girls kissing. I have no idea* what she’s complaining about.
*) Fine, I might have an idea of what she’s complaining about
The Sapphic Wish Fairy can only do so much at one time, Daise.
media school, hm ?
Alt text: but Amber could be kissing girls, if she wanted.
Lose the pencil then, ya dope.
No girl wants her soft palate perforated with that thing in yer yap.
I feel ya pain, Daisy.
Maybe because you’re a bit of a gossipy asshat?
clapping emoji!
Amber gets to, she just hasn’t. Yet. In this comic, it is almost inevitable. Not that there is any problem with that.
You overlooked the footnote.
Yes, there’s a footnote to the title, and it says: “* Making an assumption for the sake of a pun”
Also, you misremembered… the headline.
Damn, She know how to cover her ass good.
(maybe that’s why she doesn’t have a girlfriend)
Hang in there, Daisy. Even Charlie Brown once hit a home run.
It’s possible that he also once managed to kick the football. (We’ll never know.)
He actually has once, with the help of Spider-Man.
(ah sadge, can’t send images via html tags, makes sense.)
Either way he did once with the help of Spider-Man as well as another time after Snoopy turned him invisible
this is about as well as this could’ve gone for them tbh

The fact that the characters are paired off (that including joyce/Dorothy/Joe) might day good things for Walky/Amber shoppers
If that were true, shouldn’t Joyce be in the middle, not Dorothy?
Then Joyce and Dorothy poses wouldn’t line up to a hand hold and we can’t have that
Looks better for AG/Walky shippers than Amber/Walky shippers.
Plot twist: learning from Joe/Joyce/Dorothy (assuming that ends up happening) Amber and Amazigirl decide to share Walky
Daisy’s just like me fr fr
Consider that the speaker is off-panel. Could be the Incelerator back for round 3, rather than Daisy.
Today I went to the beach. While there I got swept off my feet by a wave, my foot slammed into my friend’s swim sandal and the resulting stubbing of the toe actually partially ripped my toe nail off. I am now living Joyce’s experience here as I await the final shedding…

Daisy is a shit boss.
Daisy pulled off a kinder, gentler J. Jonah Jameson vibe for me, but ended it with about the same level of frustration, though not the same source. :/
