They’re casual and non-committed, remember? Dorothy’s free to enjoy some vanilla from time to time, keep calling up her local dispensary whenever she’s in the mood for some caramel. I’m moderately sure that Walky would be totally cool with this.
I’m pretty sure Dorothy said they were a “for fun” relationship, which is different than a “casual” or open relationship (in that yes they are actually dating exclusively but wouldn’t die if they broke up).
I don’t think we need the supposed here. The elder Browns refer to Jocelyn as Joshua, which is a pretty masculine name. So it’s safe to assume they see her as a guy so it’s safe to assume she’s male.
She’s biologically male, but her gender is female. A lot of people have a hard time putting that into words, which is fine! I’m pretty sure that’s what Twirls meant.
Makes sense though, the first one didn’t show up until Shortpacked. So out of the huge character transfer we’ve still only got that small supply. But I hold out hope that Willis will throw us some more dudelove eventually.
I’m pretty sure this is why people clung so desperately to the idea of Jocelyne being a gay or bi guy (including me). Ethan really doesn’t have many options.
Willis isn’t not repeating ships. Billie and Ruth happened (briefly) in the Walkyverse. Justin and Sal also happened (slightly less briefly) in the Walkyverse. He’s just not marching down well traveled paths. And I think it’s safe to say that a Walky/Dorothy/Joyce sandwich is not a well traveled path.

Whereinthehell did Walky ever get this idea?? And for that matter, where do all the rest of you that are shipping Joyce with anyone who doesn’t have a ‘Y’ chromosome get it?
See Joyce’s older brothers, also raised by fundies: one apparently is resisting his parents, the other secretly identifies as a woman. Joyce is already repressing sexual urges in general, it isn’t impossible that she is repressing homosexual urges as well.
That said, I’m pretty sure she’s straight, lol.
That’s what I meant. Joyce is as straight as a laser beam, she’s undoubtedly still a virgin, and even though she is now surrounded by “The Young and the Horny” that’s not likely to change any time soon.
Hate to break it to you, Bill. But this ship set sail almost from the very start of this series.
I am slowly piecing together a fan vid collage of all the scenes that prove the Joythy ship has been sailing for 2 years now steady as she goes.
All along Joyce has done things just for Dorothy. For example, the only reason Joyce went to the party where she was almost drug-raped just because she knew Dorothy was scared to go to it.
When Joyce found out Walky and Dorothy were together she went crazy saying how beautiful and sexy and smart Dorothy was and how Walky didn’t deserve her.
Every time Joyce has seen Walky and Dorothy make out she has become jealous. And one can’t forget the famous scene where Joyce and Dorothy hugged in a bathroom and Joyce told Dorothy how glad she was that Dorothy chose her, and Dorothy told Joyce “Always!”
And it’s not just one way either. Dorothy has actually claimed Joyce and Walky as her companions. Dorothy went to church with Joyce even though she is a fully admitted Atheist. And the matching sweater-vest & blouse outfits were so cute before Dorothy changed to avoid having to publically admit to things. And did I mention the hugs that Dorothy has given Joyce..?
This ship not only is sailing steady as she goes, it’s the frigging Love Boat.
This is a work of fiction. In a good work of fiction, the only things that are included are things that enhance or advance the storytelling in some way. Perhaps the things we’ve been shown so far are there to set the tone, or to explore themes, or to establish character. Perhaps they are pieces of a larger plot structure that we cannot see the whole of yet, or they are foreshadowings of actions and feelings yet to come. With the best writing, everything shown does at least two things at once. So it’s possible that the scenes mentioned above are just doing one or two other things, but it is also completely possible that they are foreshadowing future action as well. With the best writers, you do not know for sure until the scene happens and everything falls into place.
I’m actually not certain about that straight-as-a-laser-beam bit. She’s definitely predominantly into dudes, but if somebody’s bi the interests don’t always split 50/50, and there’s her reaction to Sal. Sal could be an instance of basic hero-worship with a shot of aesthetic appreciation, or could be something more, and I don’t know at this point. I’m not sure is JOYCE knows at this point. I’d kind of like to think she’s straight just so it doesn’t play out into cliches, but I’m waiting to see how it plays out.
Joyce has, over the course of DoA, asked Walky if she could borrow Dorothy, was curious about getting in the box, claimed to just want tacos (and that was all one strip!), lusted over Sal’s person in general and hair in particular, expressed a desire to crawl into Billie’s cleavage, declared her love for Dorothy, and generally acted jealous over Dorothy spending time with Walky instead of her. And probably some other stuff that I’m forgetting. There’s plenty of Les Yay fuel there.
And you cannot deny that Joyce would make an excellent First Lady for Dorothy.
(And I’m pretty sure, from the cast descriptions, that Becky wants to bang Joyce like a screen door in a hurricane, but that’s a different matter.)
Back when Joyce declared Dorothy her best friend, a posted comment asked “I thought Becky was your best friend?” I think a day or so earlier there was speculation as to whether Mr. & Mrs. Brown might pull funding to get Joyce away from these “unhealthy” influences.
I wondered at that time (but didn’t post my prediction until now) whether the parents might pull some fiscal judo and instead provide MORE money… for the specific purpose of travel expenses so Becky and Joyce can spend more time together on weekends. You know, to expose her to a healthier influence.
If you’re correct about hurricane Becky, and if I’m right about my prediction…
…won’t that be entertaining to watch!
(Also, Joyce will rebel against the idea of the Joyce/Dorothy ship w/o the reassurance that people from her moral-social group have and act on such thoughts. Hurricane Becky making a pass at her may not be absolutely necessary to the ship, but will propel it along with a powerful tailwind. As it were.)
I’ve been harboring a suspicion that the reason Becky hasn’t been answering her phone is that she had probably drunken sex with someone else, likely another girl, and can’t face Joyce because she feels like she’s cheated on her and let her down with her immorality.
Although you have to add that “Never mind, I figured it out” scene with Ethan, and the sex dream about him. She’s just in a wantin’ frame of mind reacting to the faintest whiff of sex.
Everything everyone in the comments already said plus we can ship whatever we want regardless of likelihood (although Joyce seems like she might at least be curious, and I sight blushing at Billie’s boobs and lusting over Sal). That’s the great thing about shipping.
OK, I’ve read all your comments and I can see where you might be getting your slant on things. But remember — THIS IS JOYCE! She’s a naive, inexperienced little freshman who is maybe all of 18 years young; heck, she might even be 17 like I was during my first semester in college.
As for saying “claiming” Walky and Dorothy as “hers”, how many times have you seen/heard young adolescent girls — and keep in mind that this is Joyce to a ‘T’; even though she may be 18 she has the experience of maybe a 14-year-old — announcing someone is their BFF or how they “love” something or someone, from Hannah Montana to One Direction to My Little Pony to ice cream sodas to Chicken McNuggets. But that doesn’t mean she wants to get into a kinky orgy with Miley Cyrus, Flutteryshy, and Niall Horan while smeared in whipped cream and barbecue sauce (and now watch — under provisions of rule 43 someone will post fan art of this within 24 hours)!
Her remark about crawling up into Billie’s boobs — I put that down to a remark made in a state of shock. I’m sure that up until she arrived at IU the only female breasts she had seen were her own in a mirror, and some of the other girls on the floor are clearly comfortable in their own skin. But remember where Joyce’s mind went when Sarah mentioned her “toys” just a couple strips before the one Shadow12000 linked to, and earlier in that same story arc she actually stated *out loud* that she was concerned she might be succumbing to temptation and that she would end up becoming gay “like everyone else in college”.
Based on my own experiences in the field of interpersonal relations (which admittedly aren’t much more extensive than Joyce’s), what I am getting out of this is that our cute, naive, non-worldly Joyce is a little pressure cooker of feelings and conflict between her upbringing, her own body (hormones), and her surroundings and she’s doing the best she can to keep the lid on it. Only time will tell how it will end.
Remember, having been raised in a fundamentalist christian family, Joyce likely believes the things many fundamentalists believe about homosexuality – i.e. that there aren’t “gay people” and “straight people”, that it’s just an act (a sin, of course, though the bible never really comes out and says it for lesbians) that anyone can be tempted to do.
Which means her concern for being tempted into homosexual acts could have been on a purely intellectual level, given those beliefs, rather than prompted by any feelings she’s actually noticed herself having.
Sometimes when there’s an elephant in the room, it’s better to name it and clear the air. Most people won’t because of the awkward factor. Walky is clearly immune to said awkward factor. And social conventions.
So exactly how does Walky go from oblivious 50-McNugget chomping, D&MM obsessed, barely aware or in control of his desire for Dorothy that he was like a victim of mind control who couldn’t figure out what his body was doing or why. How does he go from thinking he’ll get in trouble for touching Dorothy’s breasts.
How does he go from all that to bluntly spouting gaydar-based interpretations of Joyce’s behavior?
More than just one comment… multiple times he’s teased Joyce about her relationship with Dorothy. Not just in the comic either, check out the ‘Character Tweets’ section of DoA site.
Honestly though the main reason he teases her about it is because he knows that she’s his toughest competition for the heart of Dorothy, and as long as she’s in denial he’s in the penthouse.
On the other hand all that prior commentary seemed isolated to the realm of first base as his comfort zone. As I think about it though, the escalation here is probably a projection of his having sorted out what HE’s ready for. In his head he’s over his embarrassment at having an erection while spooning her and is already well around third.
I just really really really wish I had finished creating my Joyce / Dorothy shippers fan vid collage (part 1) before this strip came out so I could’ve posted it as one of the first comments when this episode came out.
A lot of people have given evidence for Joyce being into Dorothy, but do we have any reason to believe her supposed feelings would be reciprocated? Has Dorothy shown any bi tendencies or attraction toward Joyce?
Well, Walky has his unique style of social awkwardness: he is perfectly observant but picks the wrong actions (like a stalker “she does not like me” -> “I need to be more attentive”) and/or the wrong timing (just that instead of “too little, too late” we get “too much, too early”).
Reminds me of that time where I told my father about having spent, like, half an hour in a test and getting only half-way of proving that a skew-Hermitian matrix has purely imaginary Eigenvalues, and he does that “eyes defocus while looking into a world far away for two seconds” number and tells me “but that’s trivial”. And pens down some five-liner which I brood over half an hour and then say “yeah right”.
Except that when Walky does that it would’ve been more like my mother pulling that trick on me, and that would’ve made me much more irritated (not because of genders but because there is a difference in expectations between Theoretic Physicists and English teachers).
At any rate, I’ll probably be able to reproduce that five-liner (or its associates for Hermitian and Unitary matrices) on my death bed, never mind that my job does not require higher math.
But I digress, how does this map to DoA? Probably Dorothy will now be able to imagine doing threesomes on her deathbed thanks to Walky?
Poor Dorothy. Understanding the mind of Walky is a terrible burden for a young woman. And what is it that so many characters are drawn to her. Danny, Walky, Joyce and, of course, Joe. Mike is just waiting for her to become a mother.
Willis, need I remind you of what happens to comic artist who spell out slang and accents in their comics? Five words: For Better or For Worse. Woebetide to one who follows the Elly path, lest one be scortched in the burnsauce.
Honestly no, it never really worked. And Walky has gotten worse. It used to just be Sal, which basically made me never want there to be scenes with Sal in them. Robin does it so little in Shortpacked that it doesn’t really distract, thankfully. But in DoA Willis has been going Lynn Johnston levels of dumb accent/slang writing and it’s really begun to pall.
Sal may be an issue, even if I like her as a Southerner, but Walky’s just speaking incredibly informally. That’s not an accent, that’s (lazy) diction, and actually needs to be spelled out.
You know Walky, YOU could shove your head in between your girlfriend’s legs instead of Joyce.
You know, we’ve seen a slight sex scene with Sal. I’d be interested in seeing a slight sex scene with Walky. He seems like he’d get all hot and heavy and then be like, “Is that a boob hair? I didn’t know boobs could have little hairs! That’s so weird! Wait…where are you going???”
John Redcorn was pretty much the only contemporary Native representation I had in comedy growing up. Probably the funniest Native character in cartoon history and a lot of that was on Jonathan Joss' pitch perfect rezzy uncle performance. RIP to one of the best to ever do it.

I am slowly piecing together a fan vid collage of all the scenes that prove the Joythy ship has been sailing for 2 years now steady as she goes.
All along Joyce has done things just for Dorothy. For example, the only reason Joyce went to the party where she was almost drug-raped just because she knew Dorothy was scared to go to it.

This is a work of fiction. In a good work of fiction, the only things that are included are things that enhance or advance the storytelling in some way. Perhaps the things we’ve been shown so far are there to set the tone, or to explore themes, or to establish character. Perhaps they are pieces of a larger plot structure that we cannot see the whole of yet, or they are foreshadowings of actions and feelings yet to come. With the best writing, everything shown does at least two things at once. So it’s possible that the scenes mentioned above are just doing one or two other things, but it is also completely possible that they are foreshadowing future action as well. With the best writers, you do not know for sure until the scene happens and everything falls into place.

I’m actually not certain about that straight-as-a-laser-beam bit. She’s definitely predominantly into dudes, but if somebody’s bi the interests don’t always split 50/50, and there’s her reaction to Sal. Her remark about crawling up into Billie’s boobs — I put that down to a remark made in a state of shock. I’m sure that up until she arrived at IU the only female breasts she had seen were her own in a mirror, and some of the other girls on the floor are clearly comfortable in their own skin. But remember where Joyce’s mind went when Sarah mentioned her “toys” just a couple strips before the one Shadow12000 linked to, and earlier in that same story arc she actually stated *out loud* that she was concerned she might be succumbing to temptation and that she would end up becoming gay “like everyone else in college”.
Based on my own experiences in the field of interpersonal relations (which admittedly aren’t much more extensive than Joyce’s), what I am getting out of this is that our cute, naive, non-worldly Joyce is a little pressure cooker of feelings and conflict between her upbringing, her own body (hormones), and her surroundings and she’s doing the best she can to keep the lid on it. Only time will tell how it will end.

Remember, having been raised in a fundamentalist christian family, Joyce likely believes the things many fundamentalists believe about homosexuality – i.e. that there aren’t “gay people” and “straight people”, that it’s just an act (a sin, of course, though the bible never really comes out and says it for lesbians) that anyone can be tempted to do.

A lot of people have given evidence for Joyce being into Dorothy, but do we have any reason to believe her supposed feelings would be reciprocated? Has Dorothy shown any bi tendencies or attraction toward Joyce?

Sadly, no. All indications are that Dorothy is entirely straight.
Well, Walky has his unique style of social awkwardness: he is perfectly observant but picks the wrong actions (like a stalker “she does not like me” -> “I need to be more attentive”) and/or the wrong timing (just that instead of “too little, too late” we get “too much, too early”).
Reminds me of that time where I told my father about having spent, like, half an hour in a test and getting only half-way of proving that a skew-Hermitian matrix has purely imaginary Eigenvalues, and he does that “eyes defocus while looking into a world far away for two seconds” number and tells me “but that’s trivial”. And pens down some five-liner which I brood over half an hour and then say “yeah right”.
Except that when Walky does that it would’ve been more like my mother pulling that trick on me, and that would’ve made me much more irritated (not because of genders but because there is a difference in expectations between Theoretic Physicists and English teachers).
At any rate, I’ll probably be able to reproduce that five-liner (or its associates for Hermitian and Unitary matrices) on my death bed, never mind that my job does not require higher math.
But I digress, how does this map to DoA? Probably Dorothy will now be able to imagine doing threesomes on her deathbed thanks to Walky?
So much love for Walky and so much hate for Danny, but right now Walky is making me cringe way, way harder.

Honestly no, it never really worked. And Walky has gotten worse. It used to just be Sal, which basically made me never want there to be scenes with Sal in them. Robin does it so little in Shortpacked that it doesn’t really distract, thankfully. But in DoA Willis has been going Lynn Johnston levels of dumb accent/slang writing and it’s really begun to pall.
When Joyce calls Walky a foob and asserts that Roz is totally roadside, I’ll believe you have a point.
Sal may be an issue, even if I like her as a Southerner, but Walky’s just speaking incredibly informally. That’s not an accent, that’s (lazy) diction, and actually needs to be spelled out.
Yeah, Walky doesn’t have an accent. (At least not according to his peers.) Like Robin, he just talks sloppily.
